A file protect ring is a removable physical ring fitted to a magnetic tape reel. A tape drive detects its state to decide whether writing is allowed, helping prevent recorded data from being overwritten or erased accidentally. It does not refer to a computer file-system permission or a modern digital security setting.
How a file protect ring works
The ring works as a physical write-control feature on a tape reel. The precise arrangement depends on the drive: IBM documentation, for example, describes a write-enable ring that must be present for writing; a reel without it is file-protected. The useful rule is that the ring’s state signals whether the drive permits writing, rather than assuming that every system uses the same installed-versus-removed convention.
One documented Control Data design uses a groove in the reel, a spring-loaded pin, and a microswitch connected to the drive’s read/write logic. The pin detects the ring and the switch relays that state to the drive. In that design, removing the ring prevents writing but does not affect reading. What the ring protects—and what it does not
Its purpose is to reduce the chance of accidentally changing or erasing information already recorded on magnetic tape. It controls writing at the tape-drive level; it is not a digital lock on individual files, a file-system permission, or a protection feature for flash storage.

In the Control Data example, the manual states: “The presence or absence of the write ring has no effect on the reading of the tape.” That statement applies to the described design; other equipment documentation should be checked for its own behavior.

Not one universal size is established by the cited documentation. The Control Data Institute’s 1983 manual gives one example: a circular plastic ring approximately 0.25 inches thick and 4.25 inches in diameter. Those are dimensions for that manual’s example, not a specification for every tape-reel format. A replacement must match the reel format and drive; compatibility should not be inferred from the name alone.
