If File Explorer opens a tab when you middle-click a folder, that can be expected behavior—not necessarily a “ghost tab” defect. First check whether each middle-click creates one new tab, whether it opens in the background, or whether folder names are duplicated in the navigation pane; those are different symptoms.
What does “ghost tab” mean in File Explorer?
“Ghost tabs” is not a defined term in the Microsoft documentation reviewed here. Describe what you actually see before troubleshooting:
- One new tab after a middle-click: This may be normal. Microsoft’s notes for Windows Insider Build 25174 document that middle-clicking a folder in the navigation pane opens it in a new tab, matching behavior already available for folders in the main pane. That note describes the build’s behavior and does not establish that every current Windows version behaves identically. Microsoft’s Build 25174 announcement.

- Folder entries appear more than once: Duplicated Home, Documents, Pictures, or other entries in the navigation pane or on the desktop are not the same as extra tabs. Microsoft addresses those as a separate issue. Microsoft: Fix duplicate folders in File Explorer.
How to identify which behavior you have
Repeat the action carefully and note the visible result. This is a way to describe the issue, not a Microsoft diagnostic procedure.
- Record your Windows version and build.
- Note where you middle-clicked: a folder in the main pane or one in the navigation pane.
- Check whether one middle-click creates one tab or several.
- See whether the new tab becomes the active tab or stays in the background.
- Check whether the apparent duplicates are tabs across the top or repeated folder entries in the navigation pane.
What to do if extra tabs keep appearing
If the result seems unexpected or persists, try Microsoft’s general File Explorer troubleshooting guidance. Those steps are general troubleshooting, not a confirmed fix for a specific “ghost tabs” cause. Microsoft: Fix File Explorer if it won’t open or start.

If the behavior remains, report it through Feedback Hub so Microsoft can investigate. Include your Windows version/build, where you clicked, how many tabs appeared, and whether they opened in the foreground or background. To open Feedback Hub and capture a screenshot, press Windows+F. Why a universal fix cannot be recommended
The available Microsoft material documents middle-click tab behavior for a particular Insider build, distinguishes duplicate folder entries from tabs, and provides general troubleshooting and feedback channels. It does not establish a particular cause or a universal repair for extra or background tabs. There is also no confirmed current Windows health notice in the reviewed sources identifying a general “ghost tabs” defect.
