Use tar to collect a directory and a compressor to shrink the resulting stream. For a broadly compatible archive, create .tar.gz with gzip. Choose zstd for new internal workflows where fast compression and extraction matter, or xz when the smallest practical file is worth additional CPU time. bzip2 is mainly a compatibility choice for existing .bz2 archives.
What compression on a Linux server actually does
A directory is a tree of names, permissions, ownership, timestamps, symbolic links and file contents. A compressor normally processes a stream, not a directory tree. GNU tar is the archive layer: it walks the tree, records its metadata and writes all entries into one stream. A compressor then reduces that stream. GNU Project’s GNU tar manual states: “GNU tar is able to create and read compressed archives.” The two jobs are related but separate.
That distinction explains why tar itself is not a compression algorithm. An uncompressed tar archive usually ends in .tar; adding gzip produces .tar.gz (also written .tgz), bzip2 produces .tar.bz2, xz produces .tar.xz, and zstd produces .tar.zst. The suffix tells another administrator which decoder is needed.
GNU tar can work with gzip, bzip2, lzip, lzma, lzop, zstd, xz and traditional compress. Its switches include -z for gzip, -j for bzip2, -J for xz and --zstd for zstd. The --auto-compress option, shortened to -a, can select a compressor from the output filename suffix.

Check prerequisites before creating an archive
Most Linux distributions include GNU tar and gzip. Other decoders may be separate packages, and zstd support depends on the installed tar build and zstd program. Check the tools on the machine that will create and extract the archive:
tar --version
gzip --version
xz --version
zstd --version
bzip2 --version
command -v tar gzip xz zstd bzip2If a command reports that it cannot be found, install the corresponding package through your distribution’s normal package manager or use a format already available on both endpoints. You need read permission for every file and search (execute) permission on each directory in the path. Writing the archive requires write permission and enough free space for the archive plus any temporary or original data you intend to retain.

Tar records much of this metadata, but the extracting account and filesystem can still limit what is restored. Run backups with appropriate privileges when preserving system files is required, and test restoration as the account that will perform it.
Choose gzip, xz, zstd or bzip2
There is no universal winner. Compression results vary with file type, compressor implementation, level, CPU, memory and whether the data is already compressed. A log directory, a source tree and a database dump can produce very different size and time results. No single ratio or speed percentage should be transferred from one workload to every Linux server.

Package ecosystems illustrate why support matters: Debian package metadata lists gzip, xz, zstd and bzip2 among its supported compression choices. Before standardizing a format, check the operating systems, container images, backup software and scripts that must consume it.
Compress a directory with gzip
Gzip is the least surprising starting point for a beginner. The following command archives the /srv/site directory and writes the compressed result in the current working directory:

tar -czf site-backup.tar.gz /srv/siteThe options mean create an archive (-c), use gzip (-z) and write to the named file (-f). If the source is sensitive, choose an output directory with suitable permissions and avoid placing the archive inside the directory being archived; doing so can cause the archive to include itself or fail as it grows.
To avoid embedding a long leading path and to control the extraction layout, change to the parent directory and archive the relative name:
tar -C /srv -czf /backup/site-backup.tar.gz siteWhether you use an absolute or relative source, record the command and the tar version in your backup notes. A path beginning with / may produce a warning and be stored without its leading slash, which is normally safer for extraction. Always inspect the archive rather than assuming the path layout.
List, test and extract a .tar.gz archive
List contents without extracting
tar -tzf site-backup.tar.gz-t lists entries, -z selects gzip and -f names the archive. Add a pipeline such as | less for a large listing. Look for unexpected absolute paths, parent-directory components such as ../, or an unwanted top-level directory before extracting into a live tree.

tar -xzf site-backup.tar.gzThis creates the paths recorded in the archive under the current directory. To extract somewhere specific, use tar’s directory option:
mkdir -p /restore/site
tar -xzf site-backup.tar.gz -C /restore/siteUse a staging directory first when the archive came from another administrator or system. Review the listing, extract there, compare the files, and only then copy the approved tree into a production location. Extraction can overwrite files that have the same names, so do not point an unverified archive at / or a live application directory.

Verify that gzip and tar can read it
A successful listing or extraction checks that the stream can be decoded and that tar can parse its records. For a stronger operational check, extract into a temporary directory and compare expected files, ownership and permissions. You can also create and store a separate checksum:
sha256sum site-backup.tar.gz > site-backup.tar.gz.sha256
sha256sum --check site-backup.tar.gz.sha256A checksum detects changes to the archive while it is stored or transferred; it does not replace an independent backup copy.
Create archives with xz, zstd and bzip2
Use the compressor switch that matches the filename. These commands archive the directory named in each example:
# bzip2: read or create legacy .bz2 archives
tar -cjf logs.tar.bz2 /var/log/myapp
tar -xjf logs.tar.bz2
# xz: favor compact output when extra CPU time is acceptable
tar -cJf source.tar.xz source/
tar -xJf source.tar.xz
# zstd: modern speed-to-ratio option when installed
tar --zstd -cf build.tar.zst build/
tar --zstd -xf build.tar.zstThe extraction switch must agree with the archive’s actual compressor. A file named .tar.gz that was really made with xz will not become valid merely by renaming it; inspect how it was produced or use the appropriate decoder.
You can let GNU tar infer the compressor from a recognized suffix with -a:
tar -caf release.tar.zst release/Use this convenience only when the suffix is correct and the installed tar supports the requested format. Explicit switches are clearer in scripts that must run on older systems.

Compress one file without creating a tar archive
Tar is useful for a tree because it combines many entries and their metadata. For one ordinary file, the standalone compressor is simpler:
gzip access.log
gzip -d access.log.gz
xz dump.sql
xz -d dump.sql.xz
zstd backup.img
zstd -d backup.img.zstGzip and xz normally replace the original with the compressed file and restore the original name when decompressed. Confirm the behavior and destination before running a command in an automation job. A single-file stream does not provide tar’s directory metadata, ownership records or symbolic-link representation.

Most compressors provide levels that trade time and memory for output size. Higher is not automatically better: a smaller archive can cost more CPU on every producer and consumer, and a highly compressible input may gain little from additional effort. Select a level from measured workload requirements rather than a universal percentage that does not exist.
Parallel support is format- and implementation-specific. XZ Utils exposes controls for threads, integrity checks and LZMA2 settings. The Linux kernel documentation gives this explicit example:
xz --threads=1 --check=crc32 --lzma2=dict=512KiB inputfileThat command uses one thread, a CRC32 check and a 512 KiB LZMA2 dictionary for a standalone file. Tar can feed a stream to a compressor, but the practical memory and threading behavior still depends on the installed compressor version and settings. Confirm that the destination can decode archives produced with your chosen options.
For a server under load, schedule heavy xz jobs outside peak periods, cap parallel work where your tools allow it, and monitor available memory. For latency-sensitive transfers, zstd or gzip may complete sooner even if the resulting archive is larger.

Integrity, corruption and restore safety
Compression removes redundancy from the stream. GNU tar warns that compressed files can be difficult to recover after a few damaged blocks. Treat a compressed archive as one integrity unit: keep an independent copy, store a checksum, and perform a test listing or extraction before deleting the source.
- Write the archive to a different filesystem or storage target from the source when possible.
- Keep at least one independent copy; a second filename on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
- Record the archive checksum, creation time, hostname, tar and compressor versions, and the exact command or script.
- Test a representative restore on the same distribution family and on every other platform that must consume the file.
- For critical backups, perform a complete restore drill rather than relying only on a successful checksum.
Compressed archives cannot be appended to, deleted from or updated in place according to GNU tar documentation. If a file changes, recreate the archive. Attempting to treat a compressed tarball like a mutable directory can leave an incomplete or misleading backup process.

Build a reliable automation workflow
A scheduled job should make its choices explicit and leave evidence for the next operator. A minimal gzip workflow can look like this:

tar -tzf "$dest" > /dev/nullThe script creates the destination directory, archives the source relative to its parent, writes a checksum and verifies that tar can read the listing. Production jobs should also handle retention, available disk space, permissions, logging and alerting. Do not remove the source merely because the tar command returned zero; first confirm the archive exists, has a plausible size, passes its checksum policy and can be extracted in a test location.
Troubleshooting common failures
tar: command not found or an unknown compressor option
Install GNU tar and the missing compressor using the distribution’s package manager, or choose a format available on both systems. An older tar may not understand --zstd; check tar --version and use a supported standalone pipeline only when you understand how the stream is being written.
Permission denied
Check read and directory-search permissions on every source component and write permission on the archive destination. Running as root can preserve more metadata but increases the impact of a path mistake. Prefer a dedicated backup account with only the permissions it needs.
The archive is unexpectedly large
Identify the data types first. JPEG, video, many database pages and already-compressed packages may have little remaining redundancy. Exclude caches and reproducible build outputs when policy permits, choose an appropriate compressor level, and compare complete workload results rather than one file.
Extraction fails or produces the wrong layout
List the archive with the matching switch, confirm that the file was not truncated during transfer, verify its checksum, and extract into an empty staging directory. A renamed suffix does not change the underlying format. If the archive is damaged, recover from the independent copy instead of deleting or repeatedly modifying the only original.
The receiving system cannot decode the archive
Install the required decoder there or recreate the archive with gzip when broad compatibility is the priority. Document the format, tar version, compressor version and any non-default settings alongside the file so another operator does not have to guess.
