There is no universally easiest migration; the answer depends on where your files start and where they need to end. Figma has the clearest built-in route for Sketch-to-Figma moves. Sketch can open a Figma .fig file in its Mac app, although that importer is absent from the Mac App Store build. Penpot publishes the most detailed migration workflow, including a Figma exporter, token guidance and pilot validation, but it expects cleanup—particularly when Figma Auto Layout becomes Penpot Flex or Grid.

All three workflows are conversions or one-time exports, not guaranteed lossless round-trip synchronization. Plan a representative pilot, inspect components and libraries, and validate the result before moving an entire design system.

Which migration is easiest?

The practical choice is best made by migration direction rather than by ranking the tools in the abstract.

Migration direction Documented path What transfers well Where to expect work Ongoing sync
Sketch → Figma Figma’s native Sketch importer Converted design file and its editable layers Sketch styles are not retained automatically; very large files can fail No
Figma → Sketch Open a Figma .fig file in Sketch’s Mac app Content that the importer can interpret as Sketch data Requires the direct-download Mac build, not the Mac App Store version; verify symbols, libraries and styles No
Figma → Penpot Penpot Exporter plugin, then import the generated ZIP Design content, assets and migration data supported by the exporter Auto Layout is represented as Flex or Grid; tokens, libraries, plugins and complex components need auditing and cleanup No; the exporter is for one-off migration
Penpot → Figma or Sketch No equivalent native reverse workflow is established in the documented guidance Static assets can be exported in common formats Rebuilding an editable native file may be necessary No

If your immediate job is moving a Sketch file into a collaborative Figma workspace, start with Figma’s importer. If a Mac-based team needs to bring a Figma file into Sketch, use Sketch’s direct-download Mac app. If portability, self-hosting or an auditable migration matters more than a fast conversion, Penpot’s exporter-and-pilot process is the most explicit option.

Sketch to Figma: the shortest documented route

What Figma imports

Figma states that you can import Sketch files (.sketch) into Figma. The result is converted into a Figma Design file. This is a one-way conversion: edits made later in the original Sketch document do not appear in Figma.

Do not treat the import as a style-preserving handoff. Figma’s documentation says Sketch styles are not retained and must be recreated. That includes the shared styling system you may rely on for text, fills, borders and effects. The visual appearance of many layers may come across, but the reusable style definitions need a deliberate rebuild and a comparison against the source.

Step-by-step import

  1. Collect the source .sketch file and make a read-only copy. Keep the original as your reference for visual and structural checks.
  2. Open Figma and choose the command for importing a Sketch file. Select the copied .sketch document.
  3. Wait for Figma to convert the document into a Figma Design file. For a large document, allow extra time and confirm that the file opens rather than assuming a failed browser tab means the source is damaged.
  4. Compare representative screens with the Sketch original. Check typography, fills, borders, effects, symbols, nested overrides, masks, constraints and embedded images.
  5. Recreate the shared styles that Figma did not retain. Name them consistently with the team’s intended conventions instead of copying ad hoc values from individual layers.
  6. Rebuild or verify component relationships and library references. A converted visual layer is not proof that its original symbol or library dependency remains equivalent.
  7. Record discrepancies in a migration checklist, correct the Figma file, and only then make it the team’s working source.

Handling oversized Sketch files

Figma warns that very large Sketch files may fail to import and recommends splitting them into smaller files. Split along meaningful boundaries—such as product area, platform or library—rather than making arbitrary copies that break symbol relationships. Import each smaller file, verify it independently, and document which file is authoritative for shared components.

Moving a Sketch library

A Sketch library deserves a separate pilot from ordinary screens. Import the library file first, then inspect text and layer styles, symbols, nested overrides and assets. Because Sketch styles are not retained automatically, recreate the corresponding Figma styles before importing dependent product files. Otherwise, screens may arrive with local values that look correct but are disconnected from the reusable system you intend to maintain.

After the library conversion, import one representative product file that consumes it. Check whether instances still behave as expected, whether overrides remain editable, and whether detached or duplicated elements have appeared. Only after that test should you repeat the process for the rest of the workspace.

Figma to Sketch: opening a .fig file on Mac

Edition requirement

Sketch documents a Figma importer in its Mac app: press ⇧⌘O, or choose File > Open from your Mac, then select the Figma file (.fig) in Finder. The importer is not available in the Mac App Store version. Sketch directs users who need Figma import to download the Mac app directly from its releases page.

Confirm the application build before scheduling a migration. Installing the Mac App Store edition and then searching its menus for the importer will not make the command appear. A Mac-based pilot should use the direct-download build and note the exact Sketch version used, so the team can reproduce the result.

Step-by-step import

  1. Export or obtain the source Figma document as a .fig file using the workflow available to your Figma account and file.
  2. Install the direct-download Mac version of Sketch rather than the Mac App Store build if you need the Figma importer.
  3. In Sketch, press ⇧⌘O or select File > Open from your Mac.
  4. Choose the .fig file in Finder and let Sketch convert it into an editable Sketch document.
  5. Compare a representative set of frames with the Figma source. Inspect components, variants, variables, libraries, typography, effects, masks, constraints and prototype-related metadata separately; visual similarity alone does not establish equivalent behavior.
  6. Resolve missing or altered dependencies in Sketch, then save a native Sketch copy and retain the original .fig file for reference.

What Sketch can import and export besides Figma

Sketch supports importing PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF, WebP, SVG and PDF, plus limited AI and PSD content. It exports bitmap formats, SVG and PDF, and can copy CSS and SVG code. These routes are useful for flattening a difficult element or preserving an asset when an editable cross-tool conversion is not reliable, but they do not replace a native design-file migration. A raster export preserves pixels, not components, constraints, styles or tokens.

Figma to Penpot: an explicit migration process

Why this route needs a pilot

Penpot’s migration guidance treats a Figma move as a project with discovery, export, conversion and validation—not as a single upload. It recommends auditing critical files, component chains, token usage and plugins; splitting oversized files; exporting static assets; using the Penpot Exporter for complex files and libraries; moving tokens through Tokens Studio or the exporter; and validating a representative pilot before scaling.

The central layout difference is intentional: Figma Auto Layout becomes Flex and Grid in Penpot. The content may transfer while the layout model changes, so cleanup is expected. Penpot also describes its exporter as a one-off migration tool, not continuous synchronization.

Prepare the source Figma workspace

  1. Inventory the files that matter. Mark production-critical screens, shared libraries, design-system foundations, archived material and disposable experiments.
  2. Map component chains. Identify base components, nested components, variants, instances and overrides so you can tell a missing dependency from an intentional local change.
  3. Audit variables and tokens. Record colors, typography, spacing, radii and other token categories, along with where each is consumed.
  4. List plugins and integrations. A plugin that generates content or enforces conventions in Figma may have no equivalent behavior after migration.
  5. Split oversized files along product or library boundaries. Smaller, coherent exports are easier to troubleshoot than one monolithic archive.
  6. Export static assets separately where the design depends on them. Keep original SVG, PNG or other source files with clear names and ownership.
  7. Select one representative pilot containing ordinary screens, dense component use, nested instances, responsive layouts, tokens and the most important library dependencies.

Run the Penpot Exporter

  1. Open the Figma file selected for the pilot.
  2. Run the Penpot Exporter plugin.
  3. Let the plugin generate its ZIP output and keep that archive unchanged as the migration record.
  4. Open Penpot and import the generated ZIP.
  5. Inspect the imported pages, components, assets, libraries and token-related data before exporting or distributing anything further.

The exporter’s official workflow is specifically “open a Figma file, run the Penpot Exporter plugin, and import the generated ZIP into Penpot.” Treat each ZIP as a point-in-time conversion. Changes made later in Figma will not automatically update the Penpot file.

Clean up Auto Layout conversions

Because Figma Auto Layout is represented by Penpot Flex and Grid, check every layout that depends on wrapping, growth, alignment, gaps, min/max dimensions or nested responsive behavior. A practical review order is:

  • Confirm the parent’s layout direction and whether children should grow, shrink, wrap or remain fixed.
  • Check gap, padding and alignment values at each nesting level.
  • Resize the frame through the widths your product supports and watch for overflow, unexpected wrapping or collapsed content.
  • Review absolute-positioned elements, overlays and pinned controls separately; these often need intentional placement after a layout-model conversion.
  • Compare mobile, tablet and desktop states rather than validating only the source frame size.

Move tokens and libraries deliberately

Penpot’s guidance points to Tokens Studio or the exporter for moving tokens. Choose one route for the pilot, then compare token names, values, modes and references against the Figma source. Do not assume that a matching color on one screen proves that the token graph is intact.

For libraries, verify the source-to-consumer relationship: the library itself, a component that uses it, and an instance with overrides. If any of those three behaves differently, document whether you will repair the relationship in Penpot, replace it with a local component or keep the source library in Figma until the migration is complete.

Validate before scaling

Have designers and developers review the pilot using the same acceptance list. Compare visual output, editability and maintainability, not just screenshots. Include at least one complex page, one token-heavy component, one responsive layout and one exported asset. Record defects by category—layout, typography, component structure, token mapping, library linkage, asset fidelity and plugin-dependent behavior—so the team can estimate the remaining work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Portability: what Penpot’s format changes

Penpot’s own export format is a ZIP archive containing binary assets and readable JSON. Current Penpot versions export this format as v3. The structure is designed to avoid dependence on a proprietary tool, making the file inspectable and easier to archive or process outside the application than a closed native format.

That portability does not make every migration lossless. Readable JSON helps you inspect and preserve the Penpot representation, but it does not recreate Figma variables, Sketch symbols or a plugin runtime by itself. Keep the exported archive, its version information and the pilot’s validation notes together so a future team can identify what the file contains and which application version produced it.

How fidelity differs across the three tools

Area Sketch → Figma Figma → Sketch Figma → Penpot
Basic layers and visual composition Converted into a Figma Design file; compare the result Converted by Sketch’s Mac importer; verify the result Exported through the plugin and imported from ZIP; verify the result
Styles Sketch styles are not retained automatically and must be recreated Importer behavior must be checked in the destination file Review token and style mapping during the pilot
Components, symbols and libraries Audit symbol and library relationships after conversion Audit components, libraries and overrides after import Penpot specifically recommends auditing component chains and libraries
Variables and tokens Recreate the intended Figma system where needed Verify how the Sketch document represents equivalent reusable values Use Tokens Studio or the exporter, then compare names, values and references
Layout systems Check constraints and responsive behavior Check constraints and responsive behavior Expect Auto Layout to become Flex or Grid and plan cleanup
Assets Check embedded images, SVGs and fonts in the converted file Use supported raster, vector or PDF imports when native conversion is insufficient Export static assets separately when the migration plan calls for it
Synchronization None with the original Sketch file None with the original Figma file One-off exporter; no continuous sync

A migration workflow that avoids expensive rework

1. Define the destination of record

Decide which application becomes authoritative after cutover and set a freeze date for source edits. Without that decision, teams can unknowingly repair the same screen in two tools and create conflicting “final” versions.

2. Choose a representative sample

Do not pilot only a clean marketing page. Include the structures that expose conversion risk: nested components, overridden instances, responsive layouts, token references, long text, icons, images, masks and library dependencies.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Preserve the source and conversion artifacts

Keep the original native file, the imported or exported destination file, the Penpot ZIP where applicable, and a short manifest containing file name, date, source application and destination application. This makes a defect reproducible instead of turning it into an argument about which copy was edited.

4. Validate in three passes

  • Visual pass: compare typography, spacing, color, imagery, borders, effects and responsive states.
  • Editing pass: change text, swap an instance, alter a token, resize a frame and edit a nested component.
  • System pass: inspect libraries, component references, token names, asset links and handoff output.

5. Set acceptance thresholds

Agree in advance which differences are acceptable, which require repair and which justify keeping a file in the source tool. A one-pixel visual difference may be tolerable; a detached library instance or an uneditable responsive layout may not be.

6. Scale in batches

After the pilot passes, migrate related files in batches and repeat a smaller validation sample for each batch. Keep a defect log and update the procedure when the same issue appears more than once.

Common failure modes and fixes

The import fails or never finishes

For Sketch-to-Figma, first test whether the file is simply too large. Figma recommends splitting very large Sketch files into smaller ones. Preserve a copy, split at logical boundaries, and import the parts separately. For Penpot, split oversized Figma files before running the exporter and keep each generated ZIP tied to its source file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result looks right but styles are missing

This is expected for Sketch styles imported into Figma: recreate the styles and reconnect the affected layers. For other routes, inspect the destination’s reusable styles and tokens rather than judging from a screenshot. A matching appearance can be produced by local values while the design system itself is absent.

Responsive screens break after conversion

In Penpot, inspect the new Flex or Grid structure, then test multiple widths. Correct parent direction, padding, gaps, growth and wrapping before adjusting individual children. In Figma-to-Sketch or Sketch-to-Figma work, check constraints and resizing behavior at the same breakpoints used by the product.

Instances no longer follow their library

Compare the library file, its component definition and a consuming instance. If the relationship did not survive conversion, decide whether to repair it, replace it with a destination-native component or keep that library in the source tool temporarily. Avoid silently detaching every instance; that trades a visible migration defect for long-term maintenance debt.

A plugin-dependent workflow has no destination equivalent

List plugin-generated content and manual conventions during the audit. Export the resulting static assets where possible, document the manual replacement procedure, and mark any automated behavior that cannot move. Do not claim that a converted layer preserves a plugin’s runtime logic.

Decision guide

Choose Figma for a Sketch-to-Figma move

Figma is the practical first choice when the source is Sketch and the destination is Figma. Its native importer provides the shortest documented path. Budget time to recreate Sketch styles, verify library behavior and split very large files.

Choose Sketch for a Figma-to-Sketch move on Mac

Sketch is suitable when the destination team specifically works in its Mac application and can install the direct-download build. The .fig importer is not in the Mac App Store edition, so distribution and version control are part of the migration plan.

Choose Penpot for portability and a structured migration

Penpot is the strongest fit when an open, inspectable file format, self-hosting or a formal pilot process is a priority. Its ZIP-plus-readable-JSON format improves inspectability, while the published exporter workflow makes responsibilities clear. The trade-off is more deliberate preparation and layout cleanup, especially for Auto Layout-heavy files.

What none of these tools promises

The documented workflows do not establish guaranteed lossless round trips. Figma converts Sketch files without later synchronization and does not retain Sketch styles automatically. Sketch opens a Figma .fig file through its Mac importer, but the imported document still needs verification. Penpot’s exporter is explicitly a one-off migration tool, and its layout conversion requires cleanup. Treat the source as a reference until the destination passes visual, editing and system-level checks.
