To continue developing a Figma Make project with Claude Code, move the project’s code into a working repository: download it as a ZIP or push it to GitHub, then open that codebase in Claude Code. Add Figma’s MCP connection when you want Claude Code to use the original design as context. A ZIP is a one-way handoff unless you manually bring changes back; a separate Make-in-a-local-codebase workflow exists only in a limited closed beta.
First, decide whether you need the app or just its visual design
Figma Make can create a functional app or prototype from prompts. Its preview can also be copied into Figma Design, but that produces editable design layers—not a working copy of the Make app. If the goal is to keep developing the application, transfer its code rather than copying the preview.
Figma documents both a ZIP download and a GitHub route for getting Make project code. These are the practical starting points for most readers; the local-codebase workflow is a separate beta option discussed below. Figma’s overview of Make explains the distinction between the app experience and its design representation.

Move the project code into Claude Code
Option 1: Download and open a ZIP
- In Figma Make, download the project code as a ZIP.
- Extract the ZIP into a working folder and open that folder in your preferred development environment.
- Before editing, inspect the repository or project structure, package scripts, dependencies, and existing components. Keep an untouched copy or branch before substantial changes.
- Start Claude Code in the project directory so it can inspect the actual files it will modify.
Do not assume this folder remains synchronized with Make. With the ZIP route, edits outside Make do not automatically return there; you must copy or share changes back manually if that is part of your workflow.
Option 2: Use GitHub
- Use Make’s GitHub push route to create or update the repository corresponding to the Make file.
- Clone or open that repository in your development environment, then start Claude Code in the repository’s working directory.
- Use branches and commits to organize your work, and check repository changes before merging or pushing.
This gives you a continuing repository workflow rather than relying on a downloaded ZIP. It does not remove the need to manage access, review diffs, and resolve ordinary Git changes.

Connect Figma MCP when Claude needs design context
Claude Code can work on the implementation in your codebase. Figma’s MCP server supplies context from Figma files and Make resources—such as components, variables, layout information, and other design details. MCP is a context connection, not a code-export tool: the coding agent creates and changes the implementation.

- Install Figma’s official Claude Code plugin by running
claude plugin install figma@claude-plugins-official. - Restart Claude Code.
- Authorize access to the relevant Figma account through the plugin interface.
- Give Claude Code the relevant Figma file or frame context when asking it to work on the implementation.
Figma says its remote setup is suited to users working in the browser who can provide file or frame links. The desktop MCP server is an alternative for specific organization or enterprise workflows: enable it in Figma Desktop Dev Mode, then add http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp through Claude’s CLI. Follow Figma’s current setup instructions for the exact configuration. If your organization blocks plugin installation or authorization, contact your Claude administrator; the connection does not bypass those controls.

Check access requirements
Figma lists an MCP-capable code editor or application and a Figma Design, Make, or FigJam file among the requirements. A Dev Mode full or developer seat provides full MCP access; other seats have monthly limits. Check Figma’s MCP collection overview for current access details.
Develop in small, verifiable steps
Once Claude Code can inspect the project, use it to understand the existing implementation before asking for broad changes. Make requests specific to the code and the behavior you want; do not assume every Make project uses the same framework, structure, or commands.

- Ask Claude Code to map the project structure, identify the framework and package scripts, and explain how the current app starts and builds.
- Ask it to identify the screens, routes, and components that correspond to the Make preview, then propose a change plan before editing.
- Choose one feature or screen, make the change, and review the resulting diff before moving to the next.
- Run the project’s documented development or build commands in its own environment. Compare important screens and interactions with the Make preview, and correct behavior that does not match your intent.
The design context can help Claude Code understand what to implement, but it does not guarantee a particular degree of visual fidelity or replace checking the running project.
When the local-codebase beta is an option
Figma’s “Make in your local codebase” feature is not the general default path: it is a limited closed beta for admitted users, and it requires the Figma Beta desktop app on Mac. It is built around Git-based local work, including branches and commits. GitHub is fully supported; GitLab and Bitbucket support is partial. If you are not eligible, use the ZIP or GitHub handoff instead.
