Figma Dev Mode is a developer-focused workspace for inspecting a design file, reading layout and design-system properties, viewing generated code, downloading assets, comparing revisions, and keeping handoff context in one place. Open it from a Figma Design file with the toolbar toggle or Shift+D. What you can do depends on the file, your permissions, plan and seat type: Full and Dev seats get Dev Mode, while View seats retain basic inspection capabilities.

Dev Mode speeds up handoff, but it does not turn a design into a finished application. Treat generated code as an implementation starting point and reconcile it with your project’s components, tokens, accessibility rules and responsive behavior.

What Figma Dev Mode is—and what it is not

Figma describes Dev Mode as “a developer-focused workspace for inspecting designs, viewing properties and generated code, downloading assets, comparing changes, and managing design handoff.” It places the information developers normally need beside the canvas instead of requiring repeated questions about measurements, styles or export settings.

Dev Mode is an inspection and handoff environment, not a production compiler. It can expose values and snippets for a selected layer, but it cannot infer every application concern: data states, business logic, routing, error handling, localization, keyboard behavior, semantic HTML or the responsive rules your codebase already uses. The most reliable workflow is to use Dev Mode as a source of specifications and context, then implement those specifications in the project’s established architecture.

Opening Dev Mode

  1. Open the relevant Figma Design file.
  2. Use the Dev Mode toggle in the toolbar, or press Shift+D.
  3. Select a frame, component, instance or individual layer to populate the inspection details.

If the toggle or developer features are missing, check the file’s sharing permissions and your seat assignment. Access is controlled at the file, plan and permission level rather than being guaranteed for every person who can open a file.

Access and permissions by seat

Seat type Dev Mode access What the documentation establishes
Full Dev Mode available Receives the developer workspace when permitted on the file.
Dev Dev Mode available Receives the developer workspace when permitted on the file.
View Basic inspection capabilities Can inspect designs at a basic level, but does not receive the full Dev Mode entitlement.

Seat entitlements, pricing and feature availability can change by plan and region. The workflow described here does not establish a current price; verify the account’s plan and seat requirements in Figma’s current administration and billing screens before assigning access.

How developers inspect a Figma design

Inspection starts with selecting the exact layer that will be implemented. A frame can reveal page-level layout, while a nested text, icon or component instance exposes its own properties. Selecting the wrong parent is a common reason for apparently missing values.

Read the selected layer’s properties

The Inspect panel shows the selected layer’s name and type, layout and spacing values, styles, variables, component information and code. Use it to answer concrete implementation questions:

  • What is this object called, and is it a frame, text layer, component, instance, vector or another node type?
  • How is it positioned and spaced relative to its parent?
  • Which typography, color, effect or other style is applied?
  • Is the value coming from a variable, and which mode is active?
  • Does the object link to a main component or include documentation?

Values can be copied directly from the panel. You can also measure distances on the canvas to check gaps, alignment and dimensions that are easier to understand visually than from a single property value.

Follow variables, aliases and modes

Dev Mode exposes variables by their current value and mode. When a variable aliases another variable, you can follow the alias chain to the raw value. This helps distinguish a semantic token, such as a surface color, from the underlying primitive value.

Variable collections and modes can be viewed in a table, making it possible to see how the same property changes across themes or contexts. Dev Mode can suggest existing variables that match a raw value, which is useful when a design contains a hard-coded number that should be connected to the project’s token system. Confirm the suggested variable with the design-system owner before changing code; a matching value does not prove that the token has the same semantic purpose.

Use component information and annotations

For a component or instance, inspect the link to its base component, available properties and any designer documentation. Annotations can explain behavior that a numeric property cannot, such as when a control is disabled, what content is optional or how a layout should respond at another width. Read those notes before treating a frame as a static screenshot.

Can Figma Dev Mode give you CSS?

Selecting an object populates the Code section with autogenerated snippets and a typographic or box-model preview. Depending on the object, the output can provide CSS-like declarations and values that help you start an implementation.

What generated code is good for

  • Checking the numeric values behind spacing, dimensions, typography and colors.
  • Translating a simple visual property into the syntax used by a supported language or framework.
  • Confirming that the selected object is the one you intended to implement.
  • Giving a developer and designer a shared reference during handoff.

Why the snippet is not a finished component

Autogenerated output is a starting point, not a complete application. It may not use your existing component library, token names, responsive breakpoints, accessibility semantics, state management or localization strategy. It also cannot replace decisions about image behavior, content overflow, focus order, reduced motion or keyboard interaction.

Extend code generation with plugins

Figma’s developer documentation describes Dev Mode plugins that provide custom code generation. A codegen plugin can add languages or frameworks that native snippets do not support and can surface metadata such as imports or internationalization strings. This is the route to project-specific output, but the plugin still needs to reflect the project’s conventions and be maintained as those conventions change.

Experiment safely in the component playground

The component playground lets developers experiment with component properties without changing the underlying design. Use it to understand combinations of variants, text, visibility and other properties before translating the chosen state into code. It is a sandbox for understanding behavior, not a replacement for implementing and testing the component in the application.

How to compare design changes

Keeping production code aligned with an approved design requires more than opening the latest frame. Dev Mode’s comparison tools show what changed and provide context for deciding whether code needs an update.

Compare a frame or component with an earlier version

  1. Select the frame or component in Dev Mode.
  2. Choose Compare changes to open version history.
  3. Select the earlier version you need to compare with the current one.
  4. Review visual and property changes, then identify the corresponding implementation or test updates.

Use the comparison to verify changes such as spacing, typography, asset swaps, component properties or layout structure. Record the approved version in your ticket or development notes so the implementation has a clear reference.

Compare instances and components

Detached components and instances with overrides can be compared with their base component. Two selected components can also be compared directly. These comparisons are useful when an instance appears different from the library component or when a local override may have become obsolete.

Comparison shows design differences; it does not decide whether a difference is intentional. Confirm the change with the designer or the team’s approval process before replacing a production behavior that may represent a deliberate exception.

How to export Figma assets in Dev Mode

Dev Mode can automatically detect icons and present them as downloadable assets. The Assets section can also expose GIF and MP4 nodes and the full-resolution source file for an image. Export settings support PNG, JPG, SVG and PDF.

Export procedure

  1. Select the icon, image, vector, frame or media node you need.
  2. Open the asset or export controls shown for that selection.
  3. Choose the required format and export settings.
  4. Download the asset and place it in the project’s expected directory or asset pipeline.
  5. Check the downloaded file in the application, including dimensions, transparency, animation and rendering at the intended scale.

Choose the format deliberately

Format Use when Checks before committing
PNG You need raster output with lossless detail or transparency. Confirm pixel dimensions, alpha transparency and file size.
JPG You need a compressed raster image without an alpha channel. Check compression artifacts and whether the design actually requires transparency.
SVG You need scalable vector artwork such as an icon or logo. Inspect appearance in the application and ensure the project’s sanitization and accessibility rules are met.
PDF You need a document-style export or a fixed-layout handoff artifact. Verify page dimensions, fonts and the intended viewing workflow.

For animated content, check whether the selected node is a GIF or MP4 and test the downloaded file rather than assuming a still image export represents the design. For photographs or other images, the full-resolution source may be available through the Assets section; use it only when the project’s performance and licensing requirements allow.

Keep handoff context with the design

Designers can mark work ready for development, add annotations and measurements, and link a design to tickets, documentation or code components. Those signals reduce ambiguity: “ready” identifies the intended implementation target, measurements explain geometry, and annotations capture behavior that cannot be inferred from pixels alone.

Figma documents workflows involving Jira, Storybook, GitHub, plugins and Figma for VS Code. Integration availability and setup can vary, so treat those connections as workflow options rather than assuming every team has the same configuration. The important principle is to connect the approved design state to the place where implementation work is tracked and reviewed.

A practical Dev Mode workflow for a feature

  1. Confirm access. Make sure your seat and file permissions expose Dev Mode and that you are looking at the approved file.
  2. Start with the top-level frame. Inspect layout, constraints and annotations before drilling into individual controls.
  3. Trace the design system. Record component links, variables, aliases, modes and documented states.
  4. Inspect implementation details. Select each relevant layer, copy measurements and review the Code section for a starting point.
  5. Resolve unknown behavior. Use annotations, component playground experiments and direct questions to settle states that static visuals do not explain.
  6. Export only required assets. Choose the format and resolution that match the application’s needs, then verify the downloaded files.
  7. Compare before merging. If the design changed, use Compare changes and component comparisons to identify code and test updates.
  8. Record the design reference. Link the implemented work to the approved design version, ticket or documentation.

Common problems and fixes

Dev Mode is not visible

Check that you opened a Figma Design file, that the toolbar toggle is available, and that your account has a Full or Dev seat with permission on that file. A View seat may still inspect basic properties but will not receive the full Dev Mode workspace.

The Inspect panel shows the wrong values

Re-select the intended layer and confirm whether you selected a parent frame, an instance or a nested child. For components, check overrides and the base component link. A value on an instance may intentionally differ from the library definition.

A raw value has no obvious token

Review variable suggestions, collections and modes, then follow aliases to their raw values. If no existing variable expresses the same semantic role, ask the design-system owner whether to add or reuse a token instead of silently introducing a duplicate.

The generated code does not fit the project

Use the snippet for values and structure, not as a drop-in component. Map it to existing components, tokens, responsive rules and accessibility patterns. If the team needs another language or framework, evaluate a maintained Dev Mode codegen plugin.

An exported asset looks wrong

Verify the selected node, export format, scale and transparency. Re-download the full-resolution source when the design requires it, and test GIF or MP4 files as media rather than importing a still preview.

The implementation is out of date

Run Compare changes against the last implemented or approved version. Check component comparisons for detached instances and overrides, then update code only after confirming which differences are intentional.

How to evaluate a Dev Mode workflow

Decision axis What to verify
Access and permissions Whether the contributor has a Full or Dev seat, or only View-seat inspection.
Code fidelity Whether native snippets are sufficient or project-specific codegen is needed.
Design-system context Whether variables, aliases, components, modes and annotations are maintained.
Change tracking Whether version history and component comparisons are part of review.
Export needs Which format, resolution and media type the product actually requires.

Used this way, Dev Mode gives developers a traceable path from an approved design layer to inspectable values, project-compatible code, verified assets and a known design revision. It reduces handoff friction without pretending that generated output replaces engineering judgment.
