Figma announced a package of agent-focused features on October 14, 2026, at its first Config event in India. The centerpiece is Figma Specs, a Markdown-based way to define a team’s design language so Figma’s agents can work from approved components, variables, libraries, code references and written guidelines instead of generating generic screens. The package also includes broader canvas-agent access, expanded design and code context, code layers moving to public/open beta, a Payload headless-CMS integration, and agent-created plugins and shaders.
Figma Specs is the governance layer for agents
Figma Specs is a text-based reference for a company’s design language. A team can maintain rules, decisions and references in Markdown, either as a standalone Specs file or alongside a canvas file. The document can point to canvas elements, FigJam diagrams, code layers and existing designs, giving an agent a maintained source of context rather than leaving important decisions in scattered documents.
Teams can add design libraries, code libraries and explicit guidelines to that context. In practice, a Spec can explain which components are approved, how variables and tokens should be used, what interaction patterns are allowed, and which code conventions matter during handoff. The goal is not to replace a design system; it is to make the system legible to an agent and easier for people to update when the system changes.
What the native canvas agent can do
Figma’s native agent operates directly in the canvas. Figma says it can explore several directions, apply a design system, make bulk edits and populate designs with realistic content. Examples given by the company include changing typography throughout a file, replacing placeholder copy and imagery, switching component states and converting screens to dark mode.

Those operations address a different problem from generating a one-off image. A team can ask for a broad, repetitive change while preserving the file’s existing structure, then inspect the results on the canvas. Human designers still choose the direction, resolve exceptions and approve what is ready to share or build.
How MCP and skills connect code agents to Figma
Figma’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and its use_figma capability let coding agents work with Figma files and move between code and canvas. This is distinct from the native canvas agent: MCP is the connection used by compatible external coding tools, while the canvas agent is Figma’s own workspace agent.
Figma describes skills as Markdown instructions that encode workflow steps, conventions and specialized knowledge. A skill might describe how to generate a component library, build a design from existing components, apply a design system or synchronize tokens. Combined with Specs and linked libraries, skills give an agent both the rules and the procedure for carrying out a task.

This approach also makes review easier. A team can inspect the written instruction, the referenced library and the resulting canvas or code change instead of trying to infer the agent’s assumptions from a finished screen.
Code layers bring behavior onto the canvas
Code layers let designers add code to a Figma design for more interactive prototypes. The announced rollout moves code layers from private beta to public/open beta, allowing users to ask the agent to turn a design into code or edit that code during iteration.
That creates a design-to-behavior bridge: visual structure can be explored in the canvas while interaction logic is edited in the same working context. Code layers are still a beta capability, so teams should verify whether their account, client and workspace are eligible before planning a production process around them.

Agent-created plugins and shaders
Figma says its design agent can build reusable generative plugins and shaders. The resulting plugins and shaders are free to use. Figma’s custom-tools guidance says that prompting the agent to create them is expected to consume AI credits once the feature is generally available.
This distinction matters for budgeting: using an output and asking the agent to produce or modify that output may be governed by different rules. Credit requirements are not yet a settled, universal price list.
Payload integration adds a content path
Payload is the named headless-CMS integration in the announcement. A headless CMS can supply structured content to a design or prototype, reducing the need to work only with invented placeholder data. Figma did not establish universal availability, supported plans or commercial terms in the announcement, so those details should be confirmed when a workspace is evaluated.

Rollout, access and pricing caveats
Several items are in beta or staged rollout. Figma has said the agent-to-canvas API will be paid in the future but free during beta. Separately, Figma’s custom-tools guidance says agent-created plugins and shaders are expected to use AI credits once generally available. Those statements do not establish a single price for every agent action.
- Check the current Figma plan, seat type and workspace region before enabling a feature.
- Confirm which desktop or web clients support the feature and whether an administrator must turn it on.
- Verify MCP-client compatibility separately from native canvas-agent access.
- Recheck credit consumption and API terms before moving a beta workflow into a recurring production budget.
A practical way to introduce the features
- Inventory the source of truth. Identify the component, variable, code and content libraries that are actually approved. Remove obsolete references before linking them to an agent.
- Write a small Spec first. Record naming rules, layout constraints, typography, color usage, accessibility requirements and exceptions. Link representative canvas elements and code layers rather than copying every document into the file.
- Add repeatable skills. Turn common procedures—such as generating a library or syncing tokens—into concise Markdown instructions with an explicit review step.
- Test low-risk bulk edits. Ask the canvas agent to perform a reversible change, such as replacing placeholder copy or changing a type style, and compare the result with the source file.
- Use code layers for one interaction. Start with a contained prototype, inspect the generated code and record any conventions that should be added to the Spec or a skill.
- Connect MCP only where needed. Give a coding agent access to the relevant Figma file and libraries, then define which actions require a human approval before they are written back.
- Measure review effort. Track rejected components, token mismatches and manual cleanup. If the same error recurs, improve the written context rather than relying on a more forceful prompt.
Why Figma is making this shift
The announcement reflects a move from prompting an isolated mockup toward supplying structured design-system context. Components, variables, libraries, code references and written rules can make an agent’s output more consistent with a brand and more useful in a real handoff. They do not remove the need for design judgment: teams still have to select a direction, check accessibility and content accuracy, review generated code and decide what can ship.

Those are executive-provided comparative figures, not an independently documented study in the cited coverage, but they explain the productivity problem Figma is targeting.

What to watch next
The important test is whether teams can keep Specs, libraries and skills current as products evolve. If those inputs are incomplete, an agent can apply a rule consistently and still produce the wrong result. Beta limits, changing client support and future usage-based or AI-credit charges also mean that availability should be checked at the time of adoption, not assumed from the October announcement.
Figma’s package therefore represents a governance-first approach to agents: define the language, connect the source material, let agents handle exploration and repetitive work, and keep people responsible for the decision and the final review.
