Choose full fibre (FTTP) when it is available at a competitive total price. It normally gives the best combination of download speed, upload capacity, latency and consistency. Choose cable when its address-specific plan is materially cheaper or offers a better service tier. Choose fixed wireless when wired broadband is unavailable or quick deployment is more important than peak performance, but check evening speeds, data rules and latency before signing up.
No technology wins at every address. Network design, local congestion, signal conditions, contract terms and the exact plan matter more than the label on the service. Compare offers for your property, not national averages.
At a glance: which connection fits which home?
| Choose | Best fit | Main strengths | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full fibre (FTTP) | Homes with several simultaneous users, cloud backups, creators, remote workers, gamers and anyone planning to stay for years | High capacity, strong upload options, low latency and consistent performance | May cost more at a particular address and can require a scheduled installation |
| Cable (HFC/DOCSIS) | Addresses where cable is already installed or priced better than fibre | Very good downloads, broad availability in many built-up areas and quick activation when a coaxial drop exists | Upload tiers can be much lower than download tiers; shared local nodes can slow at busy times |
| Fixed wireless | Rural or hard-to-wire homes, temporary accommodation, or households that need a fast-to-deploy connection | No street cable to the premises, potentially rapid installation and useful coverage where fibre or cable is absent | Speed, latency and reliability depend on tower capacity, spectrum, line of sight and weather; data limits are more common |
For context, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported a 2024 weighted mean advertised residential speed of 586 Mbps for fibre and 483 Mbps for cable. Its weighted mean maximum advertised speeds in December 2023 were 791 Mbps for fibre and 496 Mbps for cable. These are market-level advertised figures, not a promise for your address or plan.

Full fibre (FTTP)
Full fibre, also called fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) or fibre-to-the-home, uses optical fibre all the way to the property. Light pulses carry data through the access network, and an optical network terminal or equivalent device hands the connection to your router. Because the final outside segment is fibre rather than copper, there is less signal loss over distance and more room for future capacity upgrades.

The FCC describes FTTP as optical fibre terminating at the end-user location. In the FCC’s 2024 service data, fibre had the highest weighted mean advertised residential speed among the technologies compared. Upload performance is often the strongest reason to choose it: many fibre plans provide upload tiers close to their download tiers, although symmetry is not universal and the advertised plan still controls.
Cable (HFC/DOCSIS)
Cable broadband normally uses a hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) network. Fibre runs from the provider’s core to a neighbourhood node, then coaxial cable carries the last segment to each home. A cable modem communicates with the provider using a DOCSIS standard, while your router distributes the connection indoors.
HFC can deliver excellent download speeds and is often available without new street construction. The coaxial segment is shared among nearby customers, so congestion can reduce throughput or increase latency during busy periods. Upload capacity depends heavily on the provider’s DOCSIS configuration and plan; do not infer it from the download headline.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fixed wireless
Fixed wireless uses a receiver or antenna at the property to communicate by radio with a nearby tower or mobile network. The connection is fixed to one address even when the underlying radio technology is cellular. The FCC technology code 71 includes 4G LTE and 5G-NR sold as fixed service.
A clear path to the serving site, adequate signal strength and spare tower capacity can produce a useful connection. Buildings, trees, terrain, interference and weather can change radio conditions. Capacity is shared over the air, so a service that performs well during the day can slow in the evening as more subscribers use the same sector.
Speed: advertised capacity versus what your household experiences
What the published measurements show
| Source and measure | Full fibre | Cable/HFC | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCC 2024 weighted mean advertised residential speed | 586 Mbps | 483 Mbps | Average advertised tiers in the FCC dataset; not a guarantee for an individual address |
| FCC weighted mean maximum advertised speed, December 2023 | 791 Mbps | 496 Mbps | Average of the highest advertised tiers reported, not a measured household result |
| Ofcom 2024 average maximum download speed | 406 Mbit/s for FTTP | 437 Mbit/s for HFC cable | Provider-reported maximums in the UK technology table, not guaranteed speeds |
Mbps and Mbit/s both mean megabits per second. These figures come from different countries, datasets and definitions, so they should not be treated as a head-to-head laboratory test. The apparent UK result, with HFC above FTTP, illustrates why a local plan and network matter more than a technology’s theoretical ceiling.

Download needs
Web pages, video streaming, game downloads and software updates primarily consume download capacity. A 100–300 Mbps plan is enough for many households, but simultaneous 4K streams, large downloads and several active users benefit from more headroom. Fibre and cable can both meet those demands where the provider has modern network capacity. Fixed wireless can also do so when the tower is lightly loaded, but its advertised rate is less predictive of evening performance.

Upload needs
Video meetings, live streaming, off-site backups, sending large media files and hosting services depend on upload capacity. Fibre usually offers the widest choice of high-upload or near-symmetric plans. Cable upload tiers vary sharply by provider and neighbourhood. Fixed wireless upload is constrained by radio spectrum and cell capacity and is commonly lower than download, with greater variation. Read the upload number in the plan details rather than relying on a single download figure.
Latency, jitter and consistency
Latency is the round-trip delay between your device and an internet service. Jitter is variation in that delay, and packet loss is data that must be retransmitted. For ordinary browsing, a modest difference may be invisible; for competitive gaming, voice calls, remote desktops and interactive cloud applications, stable low latency matters as much as raw speed.
- Fibre: usually the safest choice for low, stable latency because the access path is dedicated to the property over fibre and is less affected by electrical distance.
- Cable: can perform very well, but neighbourhood node utilisation may increase latency and jitter at peak times. A plan’s advertised speed does not reveal the local congestion pattern.
- Fixed wireless: adds a radio hop and depends on tower scheduling and signal conditions. The New Zealand Commerce Commission’s 2025 Measuring Broadband New Zealand report found 4G fixed wireless had the highest latency of the measured technologies, lower and more variable speeds than fibre, and more frequent dropouts. Its results also state that 5G outcomes vary by provider and local infrastructure.
For gaming, test the actual route to the games you play at the times you play. A fast fibre or cable plan can still have poor latency if the provider’s peering or route is inefficient, while a well-positioned fixed-wireless service may be perfectly adequate for casual play.
Availability is an address-level question
National coverage percentages cannot tell you whether a particular flat, farm or new-build home can order a service. Check the exact address, including unit or apartment number, before comparing prices.
In the UK, Ofcom reported that 69% of homes—20.7 million properties—had access to full fibre in 2024, up from 57% in September 2023. That leaves a substantial minority without it, and access can differ between neighbouring streets. Ofcom also says both full fibre and cable can potentially deliver 1 Gbit/s or more.

In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map lets you filter a location by residential fibre, cable and fixed wireless and by advertised speed. Treat map entries as availability claims to verify with the provider; construction status, apartment wiring and order qualification can change the result.
What to record during the check
- Technology offered at the exact address, not just in the postcode or suburb.
- Download and upload rates, including any minimum or typical-speed statement.
- Whether the service is full fibre to the premises or fibre only to a nearby cabinet or node.
- Installation dates, civil-work requirements and any one-off construction charge.
- Data allowance, traffic management and overage rules.
- Contract term, post-promotion price and cancellation cost.
Price: compare the bill after the promotion
The cheapest headline price is often a temporary offer. Ofcom’s pricing analysis found that cable list prices tended to be higher than FTTC and full fibre during the period studied, but promotional prices and the mix of available speeds changed the comparison. A cable offer can therefore be the better value at one address, while a fibre offer wins at another.
| Cost item | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Monthly service price | What is the price after the introductory period, and when does it change? |
| Installation | Is an appointment required? Is there a construction or activation fee? |
| Equipment | Is the modem, optical terminal or receiver included, rented or charged separately? |
| Contract | How long is the minimum term, and what is the early-cancellation charge? |
| Usage policy | Is the allowance unlimited? Are there speed reductions, deprioritisation or overage fees? |
| Price changes | How and when can the provider raise the price during or after the term? |
Compare the total cost over the period you expect to stay, including installation and equipment. A slightly slower plan with no data cap may be cheaper for a household that backs up large files than a faster plan with a restrictive allowance.

Installation, indoor equipment and resilience
Fibre installation
A technician may run a new drop from the street, drill an entry point and install an optical network terminal before connecting your router. Apartment buildings may need landlord or building-management approval. Ask where the termination point will be placed and whether moving it later costs extra. Once installed, the outside fibre is not affected by electrical interference, but a cut cable or power failure at the network equipment can still interrupt service.
Cable installation
If a coaxial outlet is already active, activation can be quick and may be self-installable. A new drop, signal repair or inside wiring can require an appointment. The cable modem and router must be compatible with the provider’s network; using your own equipment may save a rental fee but shifts troubleshooting responsibility to you.
Fixed-wireless installation
Fixed wireless needs a provider-approved receiver, antenna or indoor gateway. The installer may test several mounting positions to obtain a usable signal. Ask whether the antenna remains provider-owned, what happens if trees grow into the path, and whether relocation is charged. A service can fail even when the device shows bars if the tower is congested or backhaul is limited. Keep a backup option—such as mobile tethering or a second provider—in mind if your work depends on continuous connectivity.

Match the connection to how your household works
Multiple users and heavy cloud use
Choose fibre when available at a reasonable price. High upload capacity lets several people attend video meetings, sync photo libraries and send files without one activity monopolising the upstream channel. Cable can also work well if its upload tier is sufficient and the node has a good congestion record.
Recommended Free Tools
Competitive gaming
Prioritise stable latency, low jitter and a wired Ethernet connection from the gaming device to the router. Fibre is the lower-risk choice. Cable is viable after checking peak-hour latency. Fixed wireless is suitable only when local tests show stable results; a high advertised download rate cannot compensate for repeated radio dropouts.
Remote work and video calls
Upload capacity and consistency matter more than extreme download speed. Fibre is generally easiest to recommend. Cable works when the upstream tier supports all simultaneous calls. Fixed wireless can be acceptable in a strong-signal area, but test during the employer’s busiest hours and ask about service credits or cancellation if performance is materially below the estimate.
Streaming-only households
Any technology can support normal streaming if the evening connection remains above the services’ requirements. Cable may be the value choice, while fixed wireless can be sensible where it is the only practical option. Avoid paying for a premium tier that does not improve your simultaneous-use pattern.
Rural, temporary or newly built homes
Fixed wireless may be the only immediately available service and can avoid waiting for a new wired build. Confirm the expected busy-hour speed, data cap, installation lead time and cancellation terms. If a fibre build is scheduled, compare the cost of a short fixed-wireless contract with the installation timeline rather than assuming the temporary option is cheaper.
How to compare offers step by step
- Run the address check. Use the FCC National Broadband Map in the United States or Ofcom’s property-level checker in the UK, then confirm the result on the provider’s order page.
- List every available technology. Record FTTP, HFC/DOCSIS, FTTC or fixed wireless separately; “fibre” in an advert can describe fibre only to a cabinet or node.
- Write down both speeds. Capture advertised download and upload, plus any typical or minimum performance statement. Do not compare download numbers alone.
- Check busy-hour evidence. Ask the provider about evening congestion, data prioritisation and any local outage history. For fixed wireless, ask which tower or sector serves the property and whether 5G is actually available there.
- Calculate the real contract cost. Add installation, equipment rental, taxes where applicable, promotional expiry and early-termination charges.
- Check the installation path. Confirm landlord permission, drilling, external equipment, appointment windows and who owns the installed hardware.
- Choose the lowest-risk option that meets your needs. Pay for extra speed only when it improves upload headroom, simultaneous use or latency—not simply because the number is larger.
- Test immediately after activation. Use Ethernet for a baseline, repeat tests morning and evening for at least several days, and record latency, upload, packet loss and dropouts. Wi-Fi results measure your home network as well as the access line.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing FTTC with full fibre
Fibre-to-the-cabinet still uses copper for the final segment and does not have the same capacity or distance characteristics as FTTP. Ask where the fibre ends.

Buying on download speed alone
A 1 Gbit/s download plan with a small upload tier may be frustrating for creators, remote workers or cloud backups. Put upload in the comparison table.
Assuming 5G fixed wireless is automatically low latency
5G branding does not remove tower load, radio interference or routing effects. The New Zealand Commerce Commission specifically reports provider and infrastructure variation in 5G results; verify the service at your address.
Ignoring the promotional expiry
Record the date and post-promotion amount in your calendar. A plan that is cheapest for six months may cost more over a two-year stay.
Blaming the access network for Wi-Fi problems
Run a wired test before requesting a line repair. Poor router placement, interference, old client devices or a saturated home network can make a fast line appear slow. If Ethernet is also slow at several times of day, provide the provider with dated test results.
Overlooking power dependence
Fibre terminals, cable modems and fixed-wireless receivers need electricity. If outages are common where you live, ask whether a small uninterruptible power supply can keep the network equipment running and understand that the provider’s street equipment may still lose power.
Future-proofing your choice
Choose based on the next several years of use rather than today’s single device. Fibre has the clearest upgrade path because the physical medium has substantial capacity and providers can raise service tiers without replacing the drop. Cable networks can also evolve through newer DOCSIS versions, but the achievable upload profile depends on upgrades to the local plant. Fixed wireless capacity is tied to spectrum, tower backhaul and subscriber growth; a provider that is excellent today may need additional infrastructure as demand rises.
Do not pay for an extreme tier if your router, Wi-Fi system or devices cannot use it. Conversely, avoid a low-upload plan if your household is beginning to work with large cloud files. The best long-term decision is the service that leaves adequate upload and latency headroom at a predictable total price.

Full fibre is the default recommendation when it is genuinely available to your property and the post-promotion price is reasonable. It offers the strongest overall combination for busy homes, creators, remote work and latency-sensitive applications. Cable is a sound alternative when its local offer is cheaper or easier to install, provided you verify upload speed and peak-time performance. Fixed wireless fills the coverage and deployment gap: select it when wired service is absent or delay is unacceptable, and accept it only after checking signal quality, evening results, data limits and the provider’s cancellation terms.
