The Ferrari 296 Challenge and 296 GT3 are both non-hybrid V6 race cars, but they are built for different competition: the Challenge is for Ferrari’s single-make Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli series, while the GT3 is a customer car for multi-make GT racing. Ferrari’s current model name is 296 Challenge, not “296 Challenge Stradale.” Challenge Stradale is the name of a separate historic Ferrari model.

What is the difference between the Ferrari 296 Challenge and 296 GT3?

The central difference is their racing role, not simply their power or appearance. Ferrari developed the 296 Challenge for its own single-make series, where competitors race the same model within Ferrari Challenge. The 296 GT3 is a customer racing car designed for GT competition alongside cars from other manufacturers. Different series and regulations mean the two cars are not interchangeable versions of one race car.

They do share a 2,992 cc, 120-degree V6 architecture and both omit the road-going 296’s electric drive unit. Their published output figures, however, are not a clean measure of which is faster: Ferrari quotes 700 cv for the Challenge, while the GT3 listing gives around 600 hp subject to Balance of Performance (BoP). Those are different units, and GT3 output can be adjusted to suit a particular competition’s rules.

A useful way to compare them is to begin with the series each car is designed to enter, then read every specification in its own regulatory context. A single-make series and a multi-make GT category do not provide a common test environment by themselves. Differences in a quoted engine figure, wheel size, downforce, or weight can describe design choices, but they do not amount to a matched performance test.

Is the 296 Challenge a GT3 car?

No. The 296 Challenge is a Ferrari Challenge car, built for Ferrari’s single-make competition. The 296 GT3 is a customer GT racer intended for multi-make GT competition. Both are track-focused Ferraris, but “GT3” refers to the GT competition category and its associated rules; it is not another name for the 296 Challenge.

Ferrari announced the Challenge car for Europe and North America in 2024, with the UK and Japan following in 2025. That rollout reflects the car’s place in Ferrari’s own series. It does not make the Challenge an alternative GT3 entry for a multi-make championship.

For a team choosing between the two, the first practical question is therefore not “Which one has the bigger number?” but “Which competition do I intend to enter?” If the target is Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, the single-make car is the relevant model. If the target is a GT championship, the GT3’s purpose is customer racing under GT rules. The exact eligibility of a particular car still depends on the regulations and configuration for the specific event; the model name alone is not a universal entry approval.

The series rollout also helps explain why Ferrari offers both cars rather than treating one as an upgrade path to the other. Ferrari’s 2023 technical announcement presented the 296 Challenge for its own competition, and Ferrari later described the regional series schedule: Europe and North America in 2024, then the UK and Japan in 2025. The GT3 sits in the distinct customer GT-racing context.

Do the 296 Challenge and 296 GT3 have hybrid systems?

No. Ferrari specifies the 296 Challenge with a 2,992 cc twin-turbo V6 and no hybrid component. The GT3 also has no electric unit. Ferrari’s 2023 technical announcement explicitly noted that the 296 Challenge’s engine omits the hybrid component, a choice also made for the 296 GT3.

This is a distinction from the road-going 296, whose powertrain includes an electric drive unit. The shared V6 displacement and layout do not mean the race cars use the complete road-car hybrid system.

The point is easy to miss because both racers carry the 296 name and retain the same basic V6 architecture. Engine family and displacement are not the same thing as an identical powertrain package. Ferrari’s statement concerns the omission of the hybrid component in these race cars; it does not mean the road model and racers share every component or produce power in the same way.

How do their power and performance figures compare?

Output figures need their context

Ferrari quotes 700 cv and 740 Nm for the 296 Challenge. The GT World Challenge Europe technical listing gives the 296 GT3 around 600 hp and 710 Nm, with output subject to Balance of Performance. Because the Challenge figure is in cv and the GT3 figure is in hp—and because BoP can alter GT3 output—the quoted numbers should not be used as if they were measurements taken under identical conditions.

Balance of Performance is a competition mechanism that can adjust cars’ performance to help different GT entries compete under the relevant rules. As a result, the GT3’s listed output is not a fixed, universal figure for every event or configuration. The available figures do not establish that one car is categorically faster.

When reading a GT3 output figure, retain the qualification attached to it. The GT World Challenge Europe listing reports around 600 hp and 710 Nm, and marks the output as subject to BoP. It is therefore a series-context figure, not an immutable rating that can be carried unchanged into every championship or event. Ferrari’s 700 cv and 740 Nm Challenge figures are also Ferrari’s published figures for that car, but putting them beside a BoP-adjusted GT3 listing does not make the conditions equivalent.

There are two separate cautions here. First, cv and hp are different units, so comparing the printed numerals alone is imprecise. Second, even a conversion to the same unit would not remove the regulatory caveat: the GT3’s output can be adjusted for competition. A reader can accurately report the specifications as published, but should not use the table as a simple horsepower contest or infer lap-time advantage from it.

There is no supported direct lap-time verdict

The cited sources do not provide a same-track, same-driver, same-condition lap-time comparison between the 296 Challenge and 296 GT3. Ferrari did report that the 296 Challenge was two seconds faster around Mugello than the previous 488 Challenge Evo. That is a comparison with the earlier Challenge model—not with the 296 GT3—and should not be presented as a result between these two cars.

A meaningful direct lap-time comparison would need to identify the circuit, driver, tires, setup, fuel load, weather, and applicable GT3 BoP configuration. Without that kind of matched result, a claim that one car is faster would go beyond the published figures here. Race role and specification can be explained; a definitive speed ranking cannot.

What do the aerodynamic, braking, and tire details tell you?

Ferrari describes the 296 Challenge as producing more than 870 kg of downforce at 250 km/h when its rear wing is at maximum angle. That figure is useful as a specification for the Challenge under Ferrari’s stated configuration, but it is not a controlled comparison with the GT3. The cited GT3 listing does not provide a directly comparable downforce number.

Ferrari also identifies ABS EVO Track and CCM-R PLUS brakes for the Challenge. The GT3 has aero and braking equipment designed for its class and racing use, but the cited material does not supply equivalent figures that would support a component-by-component performance verdict. The Challenge uses dedicated 19-inch Pirelli tires, while the GT3 listing specifies 18-inch racing wheels and tires. Wheel diameter alone does not establish which car has greater grip or is faster; tire, setup, track, and conditions matter too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Challenge downforce statement has two important qualifiers: it is a Ferrari figure, and it applies at 250 km/h with the rear wing at maximum angle. It should not be detached from those conditions and treated as a universal value for every wing setting or as a figure measured in a head-to-head test. Nor should it be used to estimate the GT3’s downforce, because the GT3 listing cited here supplies no equivalent number.

The same discipline applies to brakes and tires. ABS EVO Track and CCM-R PLUS identify elements of the Challenge’s equipment, while the GT3 is described as having a class-specific package. There are no matching braking-distance figures, tire compound comparisons, or grip measurements in the stated specifications. The dedicated 19-inch Pirelli tires and 18-inch GT3 racing wheels and tires are evidence of different competition setups—not a consumer fitment recommendation and not, by themselves, proof of a handling advantage.

Why the weight numbers are not a direct comparison

The GT World Challenge Europe listing gives the 296 GT3 a weight of 1,250 kg without fuel or driver. Separately, the 2024 FIA rules set a 1,470 kg minimum for the 296 Challenge as car plus driver under prescribed measurement conditions. One is a listed car weight excluding fuel and driver; the other is a regulatory minimum that includes the driver under specified conditions. They are different kinds of figures, not comparable curb weights or a reliable way to decide which car is lighter in race trim.

When comparing race-car weights, check what is included, which rules define the measurement, and whether the number is a listed specification or a minimum. Without equivalent conditions, subtracting one figure from the other creates a misleading result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In particular, the apparent 220 kg gap between the two printed figures is not a valid like-for-like weight difference. The GT3 number excludes both fuel and driver. The Challenge number is a minimum for car plus driver under the FIA’s prescribed conditions. Neither label means “curb weight” in the ordinary road-car sense, and the numbers cannot be used to claim that a race-ready GT3 is exactly 220 kg lighter.

If weight is important to a comparison, first find figures measured on the same basis: same inclusion or exclusion of driver and fuel, and the same regulatory definition. Here, those matching figures are not provided. The responsible comparison is to state what each number means, not to force a single ranking from unlike measurements.

Is “296 Challenge Stradale” the official model name?

No. Ferrari calls the current single-make race car the 296 Challenge. Ferrari uses Challenge Stradale for a separate historic model. Combining those names creates confusion between two distinct cars, so this comparison uses 296 Challenge for the current racer.

The distinction matters in searches and in conversation: the headline wording combines the present race car’s name with the name of a historic Ferrari. In the comparison that follows, “Challenge” means the 296 Challenge built for Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, not the historic Challenge Stradale. The correct current model name is not a performance trim called “296 Challenge Stradale.”

Which car makes sense for each kind of racing?

Choose the 296 Challenge for Ferrari Challenge competition

The Challenge is the car designed for Ferrari’s single-make series. Its specifications, including its dedicated tires and Ferrari-described aero and braking equipment, belong to that purpose. The relevant choice is whether you are entering the applicable Ferrari Challenge competition, not whether its quoted engine output appears higher than a GT3 figure.

Before treating the Challenge as the right entry, identify the relevant Ferrari Challenge series and its current rules. Ferrari’s announced rollout covered Europe and North America from 2024 and the UK and Japan from 2025. The car’s series identity is clear, but event eligibility and the applicable technical requirements must still be checked for the specific competition and season.

Consider the 296 GT3 for GT competition

The GT3 is Ferrari’s customer car for multi-make GT racing. Its specifications are tied to GT rules and can be affected by BoP. A buyer or team evaluating one needs to consider the applicable series, event rules, and configuration rather than treating the published output as an unconditional specification.

For a GT3 entrant, verify which championship and event are in view, what technical regulations apply, and what BoP configuration is in force. The around-600-hp listing is not a guarantee of the output at every race. Likewise, the listed 1,250 kg is explicitly without fuel or driver, so it should not substitute for checking the relevant race-weight requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available sources do not establish purchase prices, running costs, or a universal eligibility answer for every championship. Those depend on the particular car configuration and competition regulations; the figures here are not enough to calculate or infer them. A prospective team should obtain pricing and operating-cost information for its intended configuration directly, and confirm entry requirements with the championship organizer. No reliable cost comparison between the two models can be made from the specifications cited here.

Bottom line

The 296 Challenge and 296 GT3 share a non-hybrid 2,992 cc V6 foundation, but serve different racing categories: Ferrari single-make competition versus multi-make GT racing. The Challenge’s 700 cv quote, Ferrari’s configuration-specific downforce figure, and the GT3’s BoP-dependent output describe different contexts. They do not provide a sound basis for declaring one car faster without a direct test under matched conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between the Ferrari 296 Challenge and 296 GT3?

The 296 Challenge is Ferrari’s single-make Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli racer. The 296 GT3 is a customer car for multi-make GT racing. Both use a 2,992 cc twin-turbo V6 without the road 296’s electric drive unit, but their rules and competition roles differ.

Is the 296 Challenge a GT3 car?

No. It is built for Ferrari’s single-make Challenge series. The 296 GT3 is the car intended for customer GT competition under GT rules; “GT3” is not another name for the 296 Challenge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which is faster, the 296 Challenge or the 296 GT3?

The published figures do not establish a winner. There is no cited same-track, same-driver, same-condition lap-time test between them, and the GT3’s listed output is subject to Balance of Performance. Ferrari’s reported two-second Mugello improvement compares the 296 Challenge with the previous 488 Challenge Evo, not with the GT3.

Does the Ferrari 296 Challenge have a hybrid system?

No. Ferrari specifies the 296 Challenge without the hybrid component. The 296 GT3 also omits an electric unit, unlike the road-going 296 powertrain.

Is 296 Challenge Stradale the real model name?

No. Ferrari calls the current single-make racer the 296 Challenge. Challenge Stradale is the name of a separate historic Ferrari model.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 296 Challenge is Ferrari’s single-make series car; the 296 GT3 is a customer racer for multi-make GT competition. Their shared non-hybrid V6 does not make them interchangeable, and their published output and weight figures are not a matched basis for deciding which is faster or lighter.
