Use the official FTB App to install and update Feed The Beast (FTB) modpacks, then download the matching server installer from FTB’s Server Files page when you want to host. The two rules that prevent most failures are simple: keep the client and server on exactly the same pack version, and use the Java and memory settings documented for that specific pack.
What the FTB App does
The FTB App is the current official launcher for Feed The Beast modpacks. It handles installing packs, downloading their files, selecting installed versions and launching Minecraft. FTB now publishes its current pack updates through its own app rather than relying on the older distribution arrangements described in many legacy guides.

Before you install: requirements and decisions
- A compatible Minecraft account: add the account you use to play Minecraft to the FTB App before launching a pack or joining a server.
- Enough storage: modpacks contain the Minecraft instance, mods, libraries, configuration files and downloaded worlds. Leave additional free space for updates and backups.
- Correct Java: the pack’s documentation is authoritative. A 2026 hosting guide claims that Java 17 or 21 is typically required for current packs, but that is a vendor estimate, not a universal FTB requirement. Check the individual pack’s stated Java version.
- Memory appropriate to the pack: do not copy a single RAM number to every pack. Large packs can be memory-intensive, but the practical value depends on the pack, player count, view distance and other settings.
- A hosting choice: a home computer gives you control but must remain powered on and reachable; a rented game server reduces networking work and usually provides a control panel.
Install the FTB App on Windows
- Open the official FTB App page and download the Windows installer.
- Run the installer. If Windows asks for permission, confirm that you want to run the downloaded installer.
- Follow the setup screens. On the final screen, leave Run FTBApp selected if you want to open it immediately, then click Finish.
- Start the app later from the Start menu if you cleared that option.
The installer guide cited for Windows describes this sequence. macOS and Linux packaging can differ, so use the download offered for your operating system rather than attempting to run the Windows executable through an unsupported workaround.

Install a modpack and start playing
Sign in and select a pack
- Open the FTB App and add your Minecraft account when prompted. Complete the account sign-in flow in the launcher.
- Open the modpack browsing area and select the pack you want.
- Choose a version. If you plan to join an existing server, ask its administrator for the exact pack version before installing; “latest” is not a safe assumption for a server that has not updated.
- Click the install control and wait for the launcher to download the pack, mods and libraries. Large packs can take considerably longer than an unmodified Minecraft installation.
- When installation finishes, select the instance and click Play. The first launch may take longer while files are prepared and caches are built.
Change or repair an installed version
Open the pack’s page in the FTB App and use its version controls to select another published version. Install the version required by your server instead of changing individual mods by hand. If an instance becomes damaged, reinstalling that pack version is generally safer than deleting random files from its directory; preserve your saved worlds first.
Join an FTB multiplayer server
- Install the exact pack and version used by the server.
- In the FTB App, confirm that the Minecraft account you intend to use is added.
- Launch the pack once so its files are created, then open Minecraft’s Multiplayer menu.
- Choose Add Server, enter a name and type the administrator’s address in IP:port form. If no port is supplied, ask the administrator which port is listening rather than guessing.
- Save the entry and connect. Keep the server’s address private if it is intended only for invited players.
Why the connection fails immediately
The most frequently cited cause is a client/server version mismatch. The pack name alone is not enough: both sides must use the same release, and the server may require a particular hotfix or loader build. Compare the complete version labels and update or downgrade the client accordingly.

Do not remove a mod from the server pack or add a different server-side mod to the client. A missing or different mod can produce a rejection before the world loads. Client-only additions such as shaders or minimaps are commonly tolerated, but they are not guaranteed to be compatible with every pack.
Get official FTB server files
Use FTB’s current Server Files page rather than an old forum attachment. Each pack has a server installer for its published versions. The installer is a single executable that downloads, updates and extracts the pack’s server files.

- Open the FTB Server Files page.
- Select your operating system.
- Choose the pack and the required version. Selecting the newest version is appropriate only when every client will use that same version.
- Choose a download method. The Desktop option presents download buttons for the installer. The Server option displays a
curlcommand that you can run in a terminal on the machine that will host the server. - Save the installer exactly as downloaded. Do not rename it: the installer reads its filename to determine which pack it should install.
Older forum discussions mention authorization-protected links and the absence of a plain ZIP download. Those discussions are several years old and should not override the current FTB documentation. An unofficial API route may expose individual jars and configuration files, but it is not an FTB-supported installation path; use it only if you can independently verify that the files match the official pack and version.
Set up an FTB server on your own PC
Run the installer and create the server directory
- Create a dedicated folder for the server, separate from your client instances and personal worlds.
- Place the unmodified FTB server installer in that folder.
- Run the installer and allow it to download and extract the selected pack. Keep the terminal or installer output until the process completes; it often identifies missing prerequisites.
- Read the files created by the installer. Packs commonly include a Windows start script such as
start.bator a macOS/Linux script such asstart.sh, along with configuration and library folders. - Open the start script in a text editor and set its minimum and maximum memory values as directed by that pack’s documentation. Do not use a value that leaves the operating system or other services without memory.
- Start the server once locally. Follow the console instruction to accept Minecraft’s EULA if the pack creates an EULA file, then restart using the same script.
Memory and Java values vary substantially between packs. A 2026 hosting article estimates 8–12 GB of RAM for a large FTB pack and recommends specific JVM flags, but that is a vendor claim rather than a hard requirement. Treat it as a planning reference only; use the pack’s own instructions and observe actual memory use.

Make the server reachable
- Assign the host computer a stable local address, preferably with a DHCP reservation in your router, so forwarding does not break after a reboot.
- Allow the Java server process through the computer’s firewall when prompted. Create a narrow inbound rule for the Minecraft server port rather than disabling the firewall.
- Forward the server’s listening port from the router to the host computer’s local address. Router menus differ by manufacturer; look for Port Forwarding, NAT or Virtual Server.
- Give friends your public address and port, not the private address used inside your home network. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, because some routers do not support a reliable internal loopback test.
Home hosting works only while the computer and server process are running. Port forwarding also exposes a service to the internet. Keep the operating system, Java runtime and pack updated, use a strong server-operator password, whitelist players where practical and forward only the required port.

A rented Minecraft host is usually simpler when you need continuous uptime or do not control the household router. The provider supplies a machine, public address and management panel; you still have to select the right FTB version and maintain the installation.

One-click installation
- Open the provider’s game panel and find its Version or Modpacks section.
- Filter for FTB, select the exact pack and version, and click Install.
- Wait for the files to finish installing before starting the server.
- Copy the panel’s address and port to your players, who must install the matching client version in the FTB App.
Manual installation
Some panels require files to be uploaded instead. A guide for packs from version 1.6.4 onward instructs administrators to place the libraries folder inside the panel’s jar folder with the FTB server jar, then place the remaining extracted subfolders at the server root. Follow the host’s current file-layout instructions because panel conventions differ, and stop the server before replacing libraries or jars.

Keep the client and server synchronized
- Record the pack name, exact version, loader version if shown, Java version and server address in one shared note.
- Update the server only during a planned maintenance window. Back up the world and configuration first.
- Have every player close the game, select the new client version in the FTB App and launch once before reconnecting.
- Never copy a single-player world into a live server without a backup and a test copy. World-generation changes can make later downgrades unsafe.
- When a pack update changes mods, assume that old client configurations and server settings may need review.
Troubleshoot startup, connection and lag problems
The server crashes during startup
- Read the crash report and latest log rather than repeatedly restarting.
- Check the Java executable and version against the pack’s requirements. Java 17 and 21 are commonly mentioned for newer packs, but the pack’s documentation takes precedence.
- Look for a missing dependency, duplicate mod or mod conflict. Restore the official server files if you manually removed or replaced anything.
- Confirm that the start script’s memory values are valid and that the operating system has enough free RAM.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Compare both installations against a clean copy of the same FTB release. Do not solve the error by deleting whichever mod is named in the message; that often creates a second mismatch. Remove only client-side extras that the error identifies as incompatible, and keep all required pack mods intact.

- Verify the process is listening on the intended port and that the router forwards that port to the current local address.
- Check the host firewall and any provider-level network rule.
- Use the public address from outside the home network for testing.
- Confirm that players are using the same pack version and the correct port format,
address:port.
World loading is slow or players experience lag
Generate frequently visited terrain in advance with a tool such as Chunky, reduce per-player chunk-loading limits and monitor memory and CPU usage. One 2026 hosting guide also suggests scheduled restarts every 12–24 hours; treat that as an operational suggestion, not a universal fix. Restart only after saving and informing players, and investigate sustained CPU, memory or disk saturation instead of masking it with frequent restarts.
