Short answer: New York Fed President John Williams says AI-equipment supply could take longer than two years to catch up with demand—but only if the current AI demand impulse continues. He called the duration and size of the imbalance highly uncertain, not a fixed timetable.
What Williams said
In an interview reported on October 14, 2026, Williams said AI-related supply constraints may persist beyond two years. His qualification was central: “Assuming the demand kind of impulse continues as expected, and that’s a big assumption.” The statement came from a Bloomberg interview reproduced by Bitget News and reported by Cointelegraph; it is not a formal Federal Reserve forecast.
Williams had already stressed the uncertainty on July 15. Dow Jones reported that he described both the magnitude and duration of the AI supply-demand imbalance as “highly uncertain.” He also said, “So far demand is outpacing supply in certain categories of goods.”

The issue is a race between rapidly expanding AI demand and the time required to manufacture equipment, add data-center capacity and generate electricity. Building semiconductor fabrication capacity, memory output, networking equipment and power infrastructure takes longer than placing an order for computing hardware.

Where the bottlenecks are appearing
| Bottleneck | Evidence reported in 2026 | How it can affect prices |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced processors and AI servers | Demand from large data-center projects is exceeding available supply in some equipment categories, according to Williams. | Higher component and server costs can flow into cloud services, electronics and business investment. |
| Computer memory | JPMorgan economists, as reported by the Associated Press, estimated that some memory chips could cost up to 400% more between 2024 and the end of 2026. | Memory is used in servers, PCs, phones and other electronics, so a supply squeeze can spread beyond data centers. |
| Data-center equipment | Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms and Microsoft were expected to invest $720 billion in 2026, mostly on data centers, according to the Associated Press. | Large orders compete for chips, networking gear, construction capacity and specialized electrical equipment. |
| Electricity | U.S. electricity prices were up 5.9% year over year in May 2026, based on the government consumer price index reported by the Associated Press. | Power costs raise the operating expense of data centers and can also affect households and other businesses. |
These constraints can reinforce one another. More servers increase demand for memory and power; higher power prices raise the cost of running those servers; and delayed equipment deliveries extend the period in which buyers compete for limited capacity.
How AI investment is feeding inflation
The inflation risk is not simply that one type of chip becomes more expensive. A large, continuing buildout can lift prices for capital goods, consumer electronics and electricity at the same time. The Associated Press reported that Goldman Sachs expected electricity-price increases of 6% in both 2026 and 2027, followed by 3% in 2028. Those figures are a forecast, not a guaranteed path, and they illustrate why utility constraints could outlast a single equipment-order cycle.

U.S. core inflation was 3.4% in May 2026 under the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure, according to the Associated Press. A sustained AI-related demand surge would make it harder for inflation to return to the Fed’s objective if supply cannot expand quickly enough.

Williams’s 2026 view
Williams said, “I haven’t changed my view that it may be appropriate to have one more rate hike.” His comment leaves open the possibility of another increase in 2026, rather than announcing a scheduled move.

What he said about 2027
He currently sees no reason to assume additional rate increases in 2027. That is a present assessment, not a commitment: incoming inflation, labor-market and demand data could change the policy outlook.
Temporary shock versus sustained demand
Central banks can sometimes look through a brief, isolated supply disruption. Williams drew a different line for a continuing demand shock: “If this creates a sustained impulse to demand relative to supply in inflation, I do think that’s the kind of situation where you don’t look through this.” In practice, policymakers would focus on whether shortages are repeatedly pushing prices higher and broadening into services and wages, rather than on a single chip-price spike.

Would higher rates stop the AI buildout?
Not necessarily. Williams said investors expect substantial productivity and transformative gains from AI and may therefore be relatively insensitive to higher borrowing costs. If expected returns remain large, companies could continue funding data centers even with more expensive credit.

Higher rates can restrain demand, but they may not quickly remove physical bottlenecks. At the same time, delaying productive investment could reduce future capacity and productivity. Williams summarized the uncertainty this way: “Even with many sources of stability, substantial risks remain. The full effects of the AI investment surge on growth, employment, and inflation are hard to predict.”

Three ways the outlook could develop
The following scenarios organize the variables Williams and the reported analyses identify; they are not Federal Reserve forecasts.
| Scenario | Supply-shortfall duration | Dominant bottleneck | Rate-policy implication | Productivity outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity catches up | Shorter than the current two-year-plus conditional estimate | Equipment and memory production expand quickly | Price pressure fades, reducing the need for additional tightening | New capacity begins supporting faster output |
| Extended squeeze | Beyond two years while AI demand stays strong | Memory, advanced equipment and electricity remain constrained together | A sustained demand-over-supply impulse could justify further restraint | Benefits arrive, but later than investors expect |
| Demand cools first | Shortage eases because orders slow, even before all new capacity arrives | Demand becomes the limiting factor | Less inflation pressure, though investment growth may weaken | Productivity gains depend on which projects proceed |
Indicators to watch
- Chip and memory pricing: Persistent increases across several product generations would suggest a continuing supply gap rather than a one-off contract adjustment.
- Data-center capital spending: Revisions to the $720 billion 2026 estimate would show whether the largest buyers are maintaining their demand impulse.
- Electricity data: Monthly utility-price readings and forecasts beyond 2027 will indicate whether power is becoming a durable operating constraint.
- Broader inflation: Core inflation staying elevated as equipment prices rise would make the issue more relevant to monetary policy than a narrowly isolated component shortage.
- Federal Reserve language: The key distinction is whether officials describe AI spending as a temporary supply shock or as sustained demand relative to supply.
Timeline and source context
- July 13, 2026: The Associated Press reported spillovers into memory chips, consumer electronics and electricity, including the $720 billion investment estimate and utility forecasts extending pressure into 2028.
- July 15, 2026: Dow Jones reported Williams calling the duration and magnitude of AI supply-demand imbalances highly uncertain.
- October 14, 2026: Bitget News, reproducing Cointelegraph reporting from a Bloomberg interview, published Williams’s explicit assessment that the adjustment could take longer than two years and his current view that one more 2026 rate hike may be appropriate.
What the “beyond two years” warning does—and does not—mean
It means AI demand could continue to outrun available equipment, memory and power capacity for an extended period. It does not identify a guaranteed end date, promise that every AI component will remain scarce, or establish that higher rates will stop infrastructure spending. The decisive questions are whether demand continues at the expected pace, how quickly supply expands and whether price increases remain broad and persistent enough to affect the Fed’s inflation outlook.
