FedEx does not provide unlimited protection for trading cards. In the United States, the 2026 FedEx Service Guide places sports cards and other collector’s items under a maximum declared value of US$1,000. FedEx’s current trading-card FAQ gives general-use trading cards the same limit.
That figure is a liability ceiling, not an insurance policy or an automatic payout. You must show an actual loss or damage, prove that FedEx was at fault, meet the packaging requirements, and document the amount you are claiming. The practical filing process is to preserve the entire shipment, collect proof of value and condition, submit a claim through FedEx Claims Online before the applicable deadline, and keep the package available for inspection.
What FedEx declared value means for trading cards
FedEx defines declared value as its maximum liability connected with a shipment. The definition covers loss, damage, delay, or misdelivery. FedEx also states plainly: “Declared value is not shipping insurance.”

Even when a claim is accepted, FedEx says liability is limited to the repair cost, depreciated value, or replacement cost, whichever is less. For a card that can be repaired, the repair measure may matter. For cards that cannot reasonably be repaired, the relevant measure may be a supported replacement or depreciated value rather than the highest recent listing you can find.
The trading-card limit in the United States
The 2026 U.S. FedEx Service Guide lists collector’s items—including coins, stamps, sports cards, souvenirs, and memorabilia—as commodities with a US$1,000 maximum declared value. FedEx’s current trading-card FAQ similarly says that all trading cards are treated as valuable collectibles and that trading cards for general use have a US$1,000 coverage limit.
This is a maximum for the declared-value/liability framework. Entering a higher amount does not create higher protection. FedEx says an attempt to exceed a Service Guide maximum is null and void, so typing US$2,000 or US$10,000 into a shipment record does not raise FedEx’s obligation above the applicable ceiling.
| Situation | FedEx figure or rule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. collector’s items, including sports cards | Maximum declared value: US$1,000 | 2026 U.S. Service Guide ceiling; it is not a guaranteed payment. |
| General-use trading cards | Coverage limit: US$1,000 | Current FedEx trading-card FAQ limit for this category. |
| U.S. damaged or missing contents | File within 60 calendar days of shipment | Deadline listed on the current U.S. claims page. |
| U.S. undelivered or lost shipment | File within nine months of shipment | Different deadline from a damage or missing-content claim. |
| International damaged or missing contents | File within 21 days | Deadline listed on the current claims page; service and destination rules still apply. |
The geography and claim type matter. A U.S. package with missing contents follows a different timetable from a package that was never delivered, and an international damage or missing-content claim has its own shorter period. Identify the event correctly before calculating your deadline.
What a declared-value claim can and cannot pay
What you must establish
A declared-value entry is only one part of a claim. FedEx’s policy requires proof of loss or damage and proof that FedEx is at fault. You also need a determinable amount and packaging that met FedEx’s requirements.
- Actual loss or damage: Show what is missing, bent, creased, wet, crushed, or otherwise impaired.
- FedEx responsibility: Connect the condition or disappearance to handling, transportation, delivery, or another event for which FedEx is liable.
- Proper preparation: Demonstrate that the cards were packed in a way appropriate for the shipment. Inadequate packaging can defeat liability.
- Amount claimed: Support the requested amount with records rather than relying only on an asking price or an unsupported estimate.
What is not guaranteed
FedEx does not promise to pay the amount you declared. A declared amount is not a market-value guarantee, a replacement-cost promise, or protection against every cause of loss. FedEx may limit reimbursement to the lower applicable measure—repair cost, depreciated value, or replacement cost—and its policy excludes reimbursement for prohibited commodities even when a value was declared.

For example, declaring US$900 for a damaged card does not establish that the card was worth US$900, that FedEx caused the damage, or that US$900 is the proper measure of reimbursement. Those questions are decided from the evidence and the policy.

How to file a FedEx trading-card claim
1. Preserve the shipment immediately
Do not throw away the shipping carton, mailer, sleeves, top loaders, team bags, bubble wrap, inserts, labels, or any other packing material. Keep the cards and all damaged pieces in the condition in which they arrived or were found. FedEx may request a self-inspection or an inspection of the package and contents.
Do not repair, repackage, clean, flatten, or alter the evidence before FedEx resolves the claim unless FedEx specifically instructs you to do so. Photograph the package as received, including all sides of the outer carton, the shipping label, crushed corners, punctures, water marks, opened seams, and the internal arrangement.
2. Gather shipment and party details
Collect the tracking number or PRO number, shipment date, shipper and recipient names and addresses, service details shown in your records, and a concise description of what happened. A useful description distinguishes among an empty package, some missing cards, visible transit damage, concealed damage discovered after opening, a misdelivery, and a shipment that never arrived.
Write down the card names, set or series, card numbers where relevant, grading information if applicable, quantity, and condition before shipment. Serial numbers should be included when they exist. This inventory helps FedEx compare the claim with invoices, photos, and inspection findings.
3. File through FedEx Claims Online
Use FedEx Claims Online and select the event that matches the shipment. Submit the claim by the deadline for the relevant geography and event in the table above. Waiting for a seller, marketplace, grader, or carrier investigation does not remove your responsibility to meet FedEx’s filing period.

Describe the loss in factual terms. State when the package was shipped, what the tracking history shows, what the recipient received, and what is missing or damaged. Avoid combining several unrelated shipments into one narrative; each claim should identify one shipment and one determinable loss.
4. Upload proof of value and condition
FedEx identifies several types of supporting evidence. Include the records that actually apply to your transaction:
- Original purchase or manufacturer invoices.
- Retail receipts.
- Online-order confirmation together with proof of payment.
- Appraisals.
- Repair estimates or paid repair invoices when repair is possible.
- Clear photos of the carton, packing materials, cards, labels, and damage.
- Serial numbers and other identifying information where applicable.
For a sale, retain the order record and payment record showing what was actually paid or owed. For a purchase, retain the receipt or confirmation that identifies the item. If an appraisal is used, make sure it identifies the specific card or lot rather than describing a generic class of collectibles.

5. Cooperate with inspection requests
FedEx may ask you to perform a self-inspection or may arrange an inspection of the package and contents. Follow the request precisely and keep the entire shipment available. An inspection can address whether the packaging was adequate, whether the damage is consistent with transit handling, and whether the claimed cards are present and identifiable.
6. Monitor the claim
Track the claim from the Reports area of your FedEx account. Respond promptly to requests for additional documents or clarification. If FedEx approves payment, the claims page says funds may be sent by check or electronic funds transfer.
Deadlines: choose the correct claim category
Deadline errors are avoidable when you first classify the event. The current FedEx claims page lists three relevant periods for the situations covered here:

- U.S. damaged or missing contents: 60 calendar days from the shipment date.
- U.S. undelivered or lost shipments: nine months from the shipment date.
- International damaged or missing contents: 21 days.
These periods are not interchangeable. A package marked delivered but containing fewer cards is a missing-content case, not automatically an undelivered-shipment case. If a shipment never reaches the recipient, use the lost or undelivered category. For an international shipment with physical damage or missing contents, use the international period shown by FedEx.

Packaging issues that can decide the outcome
FedEx’s declared-value policy makes packaging a liability issue, not merely a shipping suggestion. If the preparation was inadequate, FedEx may conclude that it was not at fault. A declared value cannot cure a packaging failure.
For a claim, document how the cards were packed before changing anything. Show the card holders, separators, cushioning, inner container, and empty space inside the box. If the carton arrived crushed while the cards were rigidly protected, those images can help explain the event. If the cards were loose or the inner container could move freely, the same evidence may raise a packaging question.
Keep the assessment factual. Do not claim that a package was properly packed merely because it looked secure from the outside; document the materials and configuration. FedEx, rather than the shipper’s declared amount alone, decides whether the preparation met its requirements.
How FedEx may value the loss
The declared amount is a ceiling. The policy’s payment measures are the repair cost, depreciated value, or replacement cost, whichever is less. That rule creates several practical consequences:

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- A card with a repairable holder or encapsulation problem may be evaluated using a supported repair estimate.
- A card that cannot be repaired may require evidence of a replacement cost rather than a speculative high listing.
- Age, condition, and depreciation can affect the amount even when the card was valuable when shipped.
- A declared amount above the Service Guide maximum does not expand the available recovery.
Use documents that identify the specific cards and their condition. A generic price guide, an undated screenshot, or an unsourced marketplace listing may not establish the actual loss by itself. FedEx’s policy requires proof, so organize the records in a way an adjuster can match to each card.

Package arrives with an empty inner box
Photograph the outer package, all seals and seams, the empty inner container, and the shipping label. Preserve every piece of packing. Describe the quantity and identity of the missing cards, then provide purchase or sale records and the applicable tracking history. This is a missing-content claim, so use the corresponding deadline rather than the undelivered-shipment period.
Cards arrive bent after the carton is crushed
Photograph the carton before disposal or repacking, including the crushed area and the internal cushioning. Photograph each affected card and any damaged holder. Obtain a repair estimate if repair is possible; otherwise provide records supporting replacement cost and condition. FedEx will still assess whether the packaging was adequate and whether the handling caused the damage.
Recommended Free Tools
Tracking shows delivery but the recipient has nothing
Record the tracking result, recipient statement, delivery details available in the shipment record, and any communications about where the package was expected. Describe the event as an undelivered or lost shipment when that is what occurred. Preserve purchase, sale, and payment records so the claimed amount can be determined.
Declared value was entered as US$2,000
The higher entry does not create US$2,000 of FedEx protection for trading cards. The Service Guide maximum controls, and FedEx says an attempt to exceed a maximum is null and void. The claim still requires proof of loss, FedEx fault, adequate packaging, and a supported amount within the applicable framework.
When a third-party policy may be necessary
If a shipment contains cards worth more than US$1,000, FedEx’s declared-value ceiling leaves an exposure that the carrier framework alone does not remove. FedEx confirms that third-party insurance is separate and may provide broader protection, but the policy, insurer, exclusions, valuation method, deductible, and claim procedure must be reviewed independently.
Compare any alternative on the points that affect a collectible shipment:
| Comparison point | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Maximum collectible-item limit | Is the limit high enough for the entire shipment, not just one card? |
| Valuation method | Does the policy use market value, documented replacement cost, repair cost, or another formula? |
| Cause of loss | Does it cover loss during transit broadly, or only carrier negligence? |
| Packaging rules | What materials, sealing methods, and documentation are required? |
| Filing deadline | How soon must notice and supporting documents be submitted? |
| International availability | Does protection apply to the origin, destination, service, and customs route? |
| Deductible | How much of an accepted loss remains your responsibility? |
| Shipping charges | Are transportation charges reimbursed, excluded, or handled separately? |
Do not assume that a separate policy replaces FedEx’s documentation requirements. Keep the same package, photos, invoices, and inspection evidence, and follow each policy’s notice rules independently.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-shipment checklist
- Confirm that the shipment’s declared value does not exceed the applicable FedEx maximum.
- Record each card’s identity, quantity, condition, and serial number where applicable.
- Save invoices, receipts, online-order confirmations, payment proof, appraisals, and repair records.
- Photograph the cards and the completed packing before sealing the carton.
- Use packaging that prevents movement and protects cards from impact, moisture, and crushing.
- Keep the tracking record and shipment date.
- For values above the FedEx ceiling, evaluate separate protection before tendering the package.
A practical post-delivery checklist
- Inspect the outer carton before opening and photograph visible damage.
- Open the package carefully while preserving all packing materials.
- Compare the contents with the shipment inventory.
- Photograph missing or damaged cards, holders, labels, and internal packaging.
- Keep the complete shipment together.
- Classify the event as damaged contents, missing contents, or undelivered/lost.
- Submit FedEx Claims Online before the applicable deadline.
- Upload proof of value, condition, and FedEx responsibility.
- Answer inspection or document requests and monitor the claim in the FedEx account Reports area.
Key distinctions to remember
- Declared value versus insurance: declared value sets a maximum FedEx liability; it is not shipping insurance.
- Ceiling versus payout: US$1,000 is the trading-card ceiling in the cited U.S. materials, not a promised payment.
- Loss versus fault: you must prove both the loss or damage and that FedEx was at fault.
- Value versus evidence: invoices, receipts, payment confirmations, appraisals, repair estimates, and photos support the amount; a number typed into a shipment record does not prove it.
- Damage deadline versus lost-shipment deadline: select the claim category before relying on a filing period.
- Packaging versus declaration: inadequate packaging can defeat liability even when a value was declared.
