Canada is adding $500 million over five years to the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII), bringing the initiative’s total federal funding to $700 million. Announced October 13, 2026, the expansion is intended to help Canadian organizations adopt and responsibly integrate artificial intelligence while helping Canadian AI companies win customers, attract investment, commercialize products and scale.
What the $500 million announcement means
The new money is not a single award to one company. It is an expansion of a multi-year federal initiative delivered through Canada’s regional development agencies. Those agencies will connect eligible businesses and organizations with the appropriate regional program and set the applicable intake rules.
RAII operates within AI for All, Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. Its two linked goals are to increase practical AI adoption by organizations and to help Canadian AI firms commercialize and grow in Canada.

The federal announcement describes two broad applicant groups:

Eligibility is administered regionally rather than through one national application form. An organization must therefore confirm its location, applicant status, eligible activities, contribution terms and intake dates with the regional development agency serving its area.

Regional agencies can also support other local strengths and priorities. The initiative is intended to broaden access to AI benefits for Indigenous Peoples, youth, underrepresented groups and communities across Canada, so a project outside the named sectors may still warrant a regional eligibility discussion.

The Government of Canada reports that, since RAII launched in 2024, 218 projects have adopted or commercialized AI across Canada. It says those projects created or maintained more than 1,100 jobs and leveraged approximately $1.77 for every dollar approved.

These are government-reported program figures. The October 2026 release does not present an independent audit or a causal evaluation, so they should be read as reported initiative results rather than independently verified impact estimates.
Deadlines and how to apply
There is no single nationwide deadline stated for the expanded funding. The federal guidance directs applicants to the RAII program information and the regional development agency serving their location. Agency-specific rules determine the application route and timing.

Southern Ontario dates
Southern Ontario’s published intake information includes two dates:

The November 24 date applies to the specified project-cost window; it should not be treated as a Canada-wide deadline. Applicants elsewhere must verify the dates and conditions set by their own regional agency.

Application checklist
- Identify the regional development agency responsible for the organization’s location.
- Describe whether the project is primarily AI adoption, commercialization and scale-up, or both.
- Map the project to a named priority sector or explain its regional economic relevance.
- Confirm eligible costs, project start and end dates, required matching or leveraged funding, and any responsible-AI requirements.
- Check the agency’s current intake deadline and submit through its stated process.
How this differs from a single national AI grant
RAII’s structure matters when comparing it with other public AI-support options. The initiative is regionally delivered, serves both adopters and AI companies, and may use agency-specific contribution arrangements rather than one uniform national grant. The federal release does not provide enough information to compare every region on funding percentages, maximum awards, eligible-cost definitions or repayment terms.

Why the expansion matters
The policy is designed to keep more of the technology, talent and economic value generated by AI in Canada. Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon said the central question is whether Canada will capture AI’s opportunity, adding that RAII is intended to help businesses adopt AI and Canadian AI firms scale while keeping those benefits anchored in Canada and under Canadian control.
For applicants, the practical implication is to treat RAII as a regional program with two possible routes: funding to use AI in an organization, or support to commercialize and expand an AI business. The correct agency, project timing and local eligibility rules determine whether a proposal can proceed.
