For a low-balance, digital-first customer, Federal Bank’s FedSelfie account is the clearest fit because it advertises zero average monthly balance (AMB), instant digital opening and free internet and mobile banking. HDFC Bank’s regular savings account is more predictable for customers who can maintain its location-based AMB, while ICICI Bank is attractive for customers who want a broad mobile payments and financial-management interface but must check the applicable rate and fee schedule for their account variant.
The comparison below separates published interest slabs, balance penalties, digital tools and account-opening conditions. Rates and charges are not interchangeable: the account variant, branch geography and opening date can change the result.
Quick verdict: which account suits which customer?
| Customer priority | Most suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot reliably keep a minimum balance | Federal Bank FedSelfie | FedSelfie advertises zero AMB and digital opening in less than five minutes. |
| Wants a clearly published standard rate and has a stable balance | HDFC Bank regular savings | The bank publishes 2.50% across balances, effective 24 June 2025, with AMB stated by location category. |
| Wants extensive mobile payments and a consolidated financial view | ICICI Bank, after checking the chosen variant | iMobile and Net Banking list UPI, scan-to-pay, pay-to-contact, bill payments and views of deposits and investments. |
| Is comparing returns on a very large balance | Compare the live slabs carefully | Federal Bank’s 4.00% slab applies only from ₹10 crore to below ₹50 crore under its 16 July 2026 schedule; ordinary balances are 2.50%. |
This is a fit-based conclusion, not a service-quality ranking. No independent customer-experience survey or statistical ranking is established for these three accounts.
What is actually being compared?
A “savings account” is not one identical product at each bank. Each bank offers multiple variants, and the relevant terms can depend on the account name, opening channel, branch location, customer category, debit-card package and the date the account was opened.
#1 Best Overall
- Personal Finance, 8th edition
- Product type: ABIS BOOK
- Brand: PEARSON INDIA
- Federal Bank: the zero-balance point applies specifically to the FedSelfie digital savings account. Other Federal schemes can apply percentage-of-shortfall charges.
- HDFC Bank: the figures below describe the regular savings account, not every digital or special-purpose variant.
- ICICI Bank: its current product page directs applicants to the applicable rate schedule and account terms for the selected variant. The non-maintenance rule cited here is expressly for accounts opened from 1 August 2025.
Before applying, match the same balance amount, the same interest-rate effective date and the exact variant. Comparing a zero-balance digital account with a regular branch account can otherwise produce a misleading “winner.”
Interest rates: ordinary balances versus headline slabs
| Bank and account reference | Published rate information | Effective date or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Bank savings schedule | 2.50% up to ₹1 lakh; 2.50% below ₹10 crore; 4.00% from ₹10 crore to below ₹50 crore | Federal Bank schedule effective 16 July 2026. Confirm the live schedule and the exact product before relying on a slab. |
| HDFC Bank regular savings account | 2.50% across all balances | Published as effective 24 June 2025. |
| ICICI Bank savings account | The current product page routes customers to the applicable rate schedule for the selected account | Do not substitute another ICICI variant’s rate; check the live schedule at application. |
How to read Federal Bank’s slabs
The eye-catching 4.00% Federal Bank figure is not a normal-saver rate. It starts at ₹10 crore and ends below ₹50 crore under the schedule dated 16 July 2026. Balances below ₹10 crore are shown at 2.50% in that schedule, including the first ₹1 lakh statement.
For example, a ₹50,000 or ₹5 lakh balance should not be presented as earning 4.00%. On the published slabs, those amounts fall within the 2.50% range. A customer holding ₹12 crore would enter the stated 4.00% band, subject to the bank’s live terms and calculation method.

HDFC’s simpler published rate
HDFC Bank publishes 2.50% across all balances for its regular savings account, effective 24 June 2025. That makes the rate easy to model, but the account’s balance requirement can still be more important than a small interest difference for a modest saver.
Why an ICICI rate should be checked at the point of application
ICICI Bank’s current account page highlights the product and directs readers to the applicable rates. Because the exact rate depends on the selected account and the live schedule, a responsible comparison should leave the ICICI rate as “check the current schedule” rather than borrow a number from a different variant or an older date.
Interest is only one part of the return
A 2.50% rate on a balance that triggers a monthly shortfall charge can produce a worse net outcome than a zero-AMB account earning the same nominal rate. Compare the annual interest with the likely annual cost of maintaining the required balance, and include debit-card or other recurring fees where the chosen schedule lists them.
Minimum balance and non-maintenance charges
| Bank and account | Published balance requirement or rule | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Bank FedSelfie | Zero AMB advertised | No AMB shortfall is advertised for this specific account, but verify all other account and card fees. |
| Other Federal Bank schemes | Percentage-of-shortfall charges can apply; June 2025 general-customer examples were ₹75–₹375 by shortfall band | Do not assume the FedSelfie rule applies to another Federal account. |
| HDFC Bank regular savings | ₹10,000 AMB in metro/urban locations; ₹5,000 in semi-urban locations; ₹2,500 in rural locations | The required amount depends on the branch geography assigned to the account. |
| ICICI Bank accounts opened from 1 August 2025 | Non-maintenance charge equals 6% of the shortfall or ₹500, whichever is lower | The exact account terms and any other fees still need to be checked. |
Federal Bank: zero balance is product-specific
FedSelfie is advertised as a “zero-balance savings account” that can be set up in less than five minutes. That is useful for customers whose income or cash flow varies. It does not make every Federal Bank savings account zero-balance. The bank’s other schemes can charge a percentage of the shortfall; June 2025 examples for general customers ranged from ₹75 to ₹375 by shortfall band.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When opening a non-FedSelfie account, ask for the current schedule covering AMB or monthly average balance, the shortfall bands and the date from which the schedule applies.
HDFC Bank: geography changes the required AMB
HDFC’s regular savings account requires an AMB of ₹10,000 in metro and urban locations, ₹5,000 in semi-urban locations and ₹2,500 in rural locations. The branch category therefore matters. A customer moving or opening an account through a different branch should confirm which category is recorded for that account.
AMB is an average, not necessarily the closing balance on one day. Ask the bank how the average is calculated and how a temporary dip affects the charge before assuming that a single end-of-month deposit is sufficient.

ICICI Bank: calculate the stated cap before comparing
For accounts opened from 1 August 2025, ICICI states that the non-maintenance charge is 6% of the shortfall or ₹500, whichever is lower. The formula can be illustrated without treating the examples as a separate tariff:

- A ₹5,000 shortfall produces ₹300 under the same formula.
- A ₹10,000 shortfall produces ₹600, so the stated ₹500 cap would apply.

Digital banking and UPI capabilities
| Capability | Federal Bank | HDFC Bank | ICICI Bank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile banking | FedMobile | NetBanking and digital savings variants | iMobile and Net Banking |
| UPI and payments | UPI, including instant 24×7 interbank transfer or fund collection | UPI and debit-card-linked digital banking features | UPI, scan-to-pay and pay-to-contact |
| Transfers | 24×7 interbank transfers | Available through the bank’s digital channels; exact limits depend on the account and channel | Available through iMobile and Net Banking; check current limits |
| Other financial tools | Can link other bank accounts in FedMobile | Digital savings options and NetBanking | Consolidated views of deposits and investments, plus bill payments |
Federal Bank: straightforward mobile and account-linking tools
FedMobile combines mobile banking with UPI and 24×7 interbank transfers. Federal Bank also describes the ability to link accounts held with other banks. Its UPI terms describe an instant, 24×7 interbank electronic fund transfer or fund collection service. This mix suits someone who wants everyday payments and a view of more than one bank relationship in one app.
HDFC Bank: choose the digital variant deliberately
HDFC offers digital savings variants in addition to its regular savings account, with NetBanking, debit-card access and UPI. The digital experience therefore depends on which variant is opened and which card package is selected. Check onboarding requirements, transaction limits and card fees rather than assuming that every HDFC savings account has identical features.
ICICI Bank: broadest stated financial-management feature set
ICICI’s iMobile and Net Banking descriptions include UPI, scan-to-pay, pay-to-contact, bill payments and consolidated views of deposits and investments. That is useful for customers who want payments and a wider personal-finance dashboard in the same digital environment. The convenience does not remove the need to confirm the account’s balance rule and current interest schedule.

Access, branch geography and debit-card terms
Digital features should not be evaluated in isolation. The branch category affects HDFC’s AMB, and the chosen account variant affects balance and fee rules at all three banks. Debit-card issuance, annual fees, replacement charges, cash-withdrawal limits and transaction limits can also differ by variant. The supplied product information does not establish one uniform debit-card tariff for each bank, so those figures should be taken from the live schedule for the exact account.
- Confirm the branch’s metro, urban, semi-urban or rural classification when opening an HDFC regular savings account.
- Ask Federal Bank whether the proposed account is FedSelfie or another scheme before relying on zero-AMB wording.
- For ICICI, identify the opening date and account variant because the 1 August 2025 non-maintenance rule is date-qualified.
- Read the debit-card schedule separately from the savings-account interest page.
- Save the fee sheet and rate sheet that were displayed when you applied.
Which bank is better for common situations?
You often keep a low or unpredictable balance
Start with Federal Bank FedSelfie. Its advertised zero AMB removes the main balance-maintenance risk, and the account is designed for digital opening. Still check card and transaction charges, because zero AMB does not mean every service is free.
You can maintain ₹10,000 and value predictable published terms
HDFC’s regular savings account is easy to model at 2.50% across balances, provided the account is in a metro or urban location and you can maintain the stated ₹10,000 AMB. In semi-urban or rural locations, the published requirement is lower.
You want an integrated payment and investment dashboard
ICICI’s listed iMobile tools are the strongest match for this specific preference: UPI, scan-to-pay, pay-to-contact, bill payments and consolidated deposit and investment views. Compare the live interest and balance terms before opening.
You hold a very large cash balance
Do not choose solely on the headline rate. Federal’s 4.00% slab applies from ₹10 crore to below ₹50 crore under the 16 July 2026 schedule. For balances below ₹10 crore, the published Federal rate is 2.50%. Compare the exact slab, the bank’s interest-crediting method and any applicable regulatory or product conditions.
Best Value
You regularly send money through UPI
All three banks provide UPI through their digital channels. Federal emphasizes FedMobile and 24×7 interbank transfers; HDFC combines UPI with its digital savings and NetBanking offerings; ICICI lists additional scan-to-pay and pay-to-contact flows. Choose based on the interface and limits you actually need, then verify current transaction limits during setup.
How to compare before opening an account
- Choose the exact product name. Write down “FedSelfie,” “regular savings,” or the precise ICICI variant. Do not compare a generic bank name.
- Record the effective date. Use Federal’s 16 July 2026 schedule and HDFC’s 24 June 2025 publication as dated references, and obtain the live ICICI schedule.
- Model your normal balance. Use the amount you realistically maintain, not a temporary deposit made to satisfy onboarding.
- Calculate balance exposure. Apply HDFC’s location-based AMB, Federal’s product-specific rule or ICICI’s 6%-of-shortfall-or-₹500 formula as applicable.
- List the digital actions you need. Check UPI, bill payments, account linking, transfers, scan-to-pay, pay-to-contact and consolidated financial views.
- Check the card and cash schedule. Confirm issuance, annual, replacement, ATM and transaction-limit terms for the selected debit card.
- Save the final documents. Keep the rate sheet, fee schedule, account-opening confirmation and any variant-specific disclosures.
Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a large-balance rate for a small saver
Federal’s 4.00% rate is restricted to the ₹10 crore-to-below-₹50 crore slab in the dated schedule. Presenting it as the ordinary Federal savings rate is incorrect.
Assuming zero balance applies to every Federal account
The zero-AMB statement belongs to FedSelfie. Other Federal schemes can have shortfall charges, including the June 2025 examples of ₹75–₹375 for general customers.
Ignoring HDFC branch geography
The difference between ₹10,000, ₹5,000 and ₹2,500 is determined by metro/urban, semi-urban or rural classification. Confirm the classification attached to the account.
Applying an old ICICI fee rule to a new account
The 6% or ₹500 cap cited here is for accounts opened from 1 August 2025. Older accounts or different products may have different terms.
Comparing apps by feature names alone
A listed feature may have channel-specific limits, eligibility conditions or charges. Test the exact flows you need—such as bill payment, UPI collection or linking another bank—after confirming the account variant.
Bottom line for a 2026 decision
Federal Bank FedSelfie is the strongest starting point for a customer who prioritizes zero AMB and quick digital setup. HDFC Bank’s regular savings account is the most straightforward to model on interest, at 2.50% across balances effective 24 June 2025, but its AMB varies by branch geography. ICICI Bank stands out for the breadth of digital payment and financial-dashboard functions it lists, while its exact interest rate and account terms must be checked in the live schedule. In every case, verify the variant, effective date, balance rule and debit-card schedule immediately before applying.
