Feature flags let a team deploy code separately from exposing its behavior to users. That makes them useful not just for unfinished features, but also for maintenance coordination, opt-in previews, incident response, operational configuration, and controlled experiments. A flag is a runtime control—not a migration plan, safety guarantee, or substitute for monitoring and operational ownership.

What a feature flag controls

A feature flag is a runtime control that determines whether, when, or how application behavior is available. Teams can deploy code while keeping a new path unavailable to most users, then change its audience or exposure without another deployment. Microsoft Learn describes this separation as decoupling feature release from code deployment and enabling on-demand changes to availability: Azure App Configuration feature management.

Flags can be simple on/off switches or controls that target a user, group, cohort, or variant. The five uses below are practical groupings, not an exhaustive taxonomy. Choose a flag based on the decision it needs to control, and decide in advance who owns it, what signals will guide changes, and what happens if its configuration is unavailable.

1. Coordinate maintenance and migrations

A maintenance-mode flag can change application behavior while a planned database migration is underway—for example, by temporarily directing users to a maintenance screen or disabling operations that would conflict with the migration. Azure App Configuration documents maintenance mode around a database migration as a switch use case: Microsoft Learn’s feature-management scenarios.

The flag coordinates the application; it does not run the migration, make a schema change safe, or replace a rollback and recovery plan. Define which requests remain available, how users are informed, and how the application behaves if the flag service cannot be reached. Test the migration and the flag’s transitions before relying on them during a maintenance window.

2. Offer opt-in previews and staged access

Use a flag to let an internal team, selected customers, or willing users try a feature before exposing it broadly. A preview can reveal usability problems and real-world edge cases while limiting the initial audience. If feedback is positive and system health remains acceptable, expand access in deliberate stages.

Microsoft documents targeting down to individual users and recommends watching both usage behavior and system health as exposure increases: Progressive experimentation with feature flags. Define the audience and success or stop conditions before launch; a small audience limits exposure but does not, by itself, establish that the feature is ready for everyone.

3. Shut off a failing feature or dependency

A kill switch can disable a malfunctioning feature or a path that relies on a failing dependency, allowing the application to use a previously trusted behavior without waiting for a redeployment. Microsoft and Unleash both describe kill switches or rapid shutdown as feature-flag uses: Microsoft Learn and Unleash’s feature-flag overview.

This works only if the application was designed with a safe fallback. Before an incident, identify the flag owner, the signal that should trigger a change, and the path users will get when the feature is off. Consider how the application behaves when it cannot retrieve flag configuration; a switch is not an effective emergency control if its control plane is unavailable or the fallback is also failing.

4. Adjust operational configuration

Some flags govern runtime settings rather than a user-facing feature. AWS AppConfig documents configuration use cases including throttling limits, block lists, allow lists, and logging levels, alongside feature flags and experimentation: AWS AppConfig documentation.

These controls can help teams respond to changing operating conditions without changing application code, but changing a limit or list can have significant effects. Treat configuration changes as production operations: establish who may make them, what review or logging is appropriate, how to observe their impact, and how to restore a known-good value. The existence of a runtime control is not proof that a change is safe.

5. Compare variants in a controlled experiment

A flag can assign different audiences to different versions of a feature—for example, two onboarding flows—so a team can compare outcomes. AWS AppConfig and Microsoft list experimentation among feature-management scenarios: AWS AppConfig and Azure App Configuration.

Assignment is only one part of an experiment. A flag does not supply a useful hypothesis, an adequate sample, or valid statistical analysis. Decide which outcome matters, how assignment works, how long the test needs to run, and what other changes might affect the result. Do not treat a difference between variants as evidence of causation unless the experiment design supports that conclusion.

Make flags manageable, not permanent clutter

Every flag adds a decision point that can increase code complexity. Release flags are often temporary: once a feature is fully rolled out and its behavior no longer needs to be controlled, remove the flag and obsolete branches. Keep longer-lived operational controls only when they have a clear owner and ongoing purpose.

In a 2019 paper, Rezvan Mahdavi-Hezaveh, Jacob Dremann, and Laurie Williams reported 17 feature-toggle practices across management, initialization, implementation, and cleanup categories. Their work included a practitioner survey spanning 38 companies; it describes observed practices, not universal guarantees or proven best practices. For each production flag, record its purpose, owner, default behavior, intended audience, and review or removal point. Restrict and audit who can change production state, and test both flag states and failure behavior. Microsoft recommends monitoring user behavior and system health during rollout, retiring most flags after full release, and reviewing remaining flags regularly: Microsoft’s progressive experimentation guidance.
