Neither option is universally better. Choose silicone tubing when you need a flexible, replaceable line that can bend around hardware. Choose an FDM-printed channel when the fluid path must be built into a custom housing, manifold or prototype and the required dimensions, fluid and pressure are compatible with the printed design. A printed path must be leak-tested on its actual geometry; tubing must be selected from a datasheet for its exact grade, size and service.
The decision is therefore less about “3D printed versus silicone” in the abstract and more about routing, integration, pressure, temperature, chemical exposure, cleaning and compliance. The comparison below separates those factors so you can make a defensible choice.
What you are comparing
FDM-printed liquid channels
Fused deposition modeling (FDM), also called fused filament fabrication, deposits thermoplastic filament layer by layer. A channel can be modeled inside a block, plate or manifold, allowing ports, chambers and mounting features to share one printed body. This is valuable for one-off fixtures and compact prototypes because the fluid path does not need a separate hose and bracket.
The same layer-by-layer construction creates anisotropic walls, seams and small voids. Nozzle diameter, extrusion width, layer height, cooling and the channel’s orientation limit the smallest practical passage. The 2017 review in Analytical Chemistry reported that FDM was not suitable in its reviewed context for channel cross-sections on the order of 100 μm or less, because nozzle and extruded-filament dimensions constrained resolution. That figure is a finding from that review and printing context, not a universal cutoff for every current printer or process (University of Groningen review, 2017).

Silicone tubing
Silicone tubing is a separate elastomeric component. You cut it to length, push it over a barb or insert it into a fitting, and route it by bending. A medical-tubing overview describes silicone tubing for fluid-transfer applications and its flexibility (Saint-Gobain Medical silicone tubing overview). Because the line is separate from the device body, it can normally be replaced without redesigning or reprinting the housing.
Side-by-side comparison
| Decision factor | FDM-printed channel | Silicone tubing |
|---|---|---|
| Geometry | Custom passages, manifolds and ports can be integrated into a printed body; fine channels are limited by the process. | Flexible, separate line; route it by bending and connect it with fittings. |
| Leakage and pressure | Controlled by wall integrity, geometry, orientation and print settings. Validate the finished part; no universal pressure rating applies. | Use the working-pressure rating for the exact product, inside diameter and wall. Ratings differ by size and construction. |
| Chemical compatibility | Depends on polymer, additives, layer interfaces and the liquid. Verify the filament formulation and test the finished part. | Often suitable for fluid transfer, but silicone can swell in some nonpolar organic solvents and degrade in strong acids or bases. |
| Temperature and cleaning | Depends on filament, seals, geometry and print history; there is no single range for all FDM parts. | Product-specific. Technical documents state different temperature, sterilization and cleaning limits for different grades. |
| Visibility | Printed channels are not necessarily transparent; limited transparency can make inspection difficult. | Some silicone products are translucent, allowing a visual check for bubbles or gross blockage. |
| Repair | A leak in an integrated channel may require redesigning or reprinting the part. | A damaged tube can generally be cut out and replaced as a separate component. |
| Best fit | Compact integrated prototypes, custom manifolds and geometry that would be difficult to assemble from hose and fittings. | Flexible routed lines, temporary setups, serviceable equipment and applications where a documented tubing grade is available. |
How to choose for your application
Choose silicone tubing when routing and serviceability dominate
- The line must bend around moving parts, enclosures or obstacles.
- You expect to change the route, replace contaminated tubing or service the device.
- You need a product datasheet with working-pressure, temperature or sterilization information.
- The liquid path is long or changes during experiments, making a fixed printed geometry inconvenient.
- You want to isolate the fluid-contact component from a structural printed part.
Silicone is not automatically compatible with every liquid. DuPont’s technical document gives a quoted commercial-elastomer operating range of −80 °C to +215 °C, while warning that silicone may swell in certain nonpolar organic solvents and may be degraded by strong acids or bases (DuPont Liveo silicone-tubing technical document). Treat that range as document-level guidance, not a guarantee for an unspecified tube. Confirm the exact grade, exposure time, concentration and temperature.
Choose an FDM channel when integration outweighs flexibility
- The channel, ports, valves, mounting holes and other features must occupy one custom body.
- A fixed, compact path saves space or eliminates many external fittings.
- You can make the channel large enough for the printer and material you are using.
- You can produce test parts and verify leakage before the device is deployed.
- The fluid and operating conditions are compatible with the selected filament and any seals or inserts.
Do not select FDM merely because it is quick to print. A channel that is difficult to inspect, clean or repair can cost more time than a short length of replaceable tube.

Pressure and leakage: the critical FDM distinction
A printed channel has no catalog pressure rating unless the manufacturer has tested that exact design and process. Leakage can arise from incomplete fusion, inter-layer voids, thin walls, sharp corners, porous surfaces, warped interfaces or an ill-fitting port. The 2021 Micromachines study found tested desktop-FDM profiles that were susceptible to leakage when flow generated 4,000 Pa in the evaluated configurations without pre- or post-processing (“Study of Microchannels Fabricated Using Desktop Fused Deposition Modeling Systems,” 2021). That is not a safe-pressure limit for all printers or channels.
A 2025 study used microscale computed tomography to examine leak pathways in 3D-printed fluidics and optimize leak-free parts (ACS Applied Polymer Materials, 2025). Its relevance is practical: leakage is a geometry-and-process problem that should be located and corrected, not handled with a generic pressure claim.
Pressure-test a printed channel
- Use the real material and print settings. Print the channel with the intended polymer, nozzle, layer height, extrusion settings, infill, walls and orientation. A solid test coupon can hide defects that appear in the production geometry.
- Inspect ports and walls. Check for visible gaps, delamination, warping and rough transitions. Confirm that barbs, threaded inserts or O-ring grooves have printed to their intended dimensions.
- Flush and dry the passage. Remove loose particles before testing. Record the liquid used, since a solvent can change polymer or seal behavior.
- Apply a controlled test pressure. Increase pressure gradually with a regulator and monitor the part for drips, dampness, bubbles or pressure decay. Keep the test below the limits of the weakest fitting, seal and instrument.
- Repeat after conditioning. If the channel will see heat, cleaning, cycling or chemical exposure, test after that conditioning. A part that passes when new may leak after swelling, shrinkage or repeated pressure cycles.
- Define a working limit from your data. Use a safety margin and document the tested geometry and process. Do not transfer the result to a different polymer, printer profile or channel shape.

As an example of why the exact product matters, Saint-Gobain’s Versilon SPT-70 FB IB page lists size-specific maximum working pressures from 7.6 to 9.3 bar across the displayed sizes and a recommended maximum operating temperature of 160 °C (Versilon SPT-70 FB IB specifications). Those values apply to that product and its listed dimensions, not to generic silicone tubing. The same page notes that restrictions and limitations can apply to food-contact statements, so a label such as “food grade” should not be treated as blanket approval for every process.

Make reliable tube connections
- Measure the fitting’s outside diameter and select tubing with a controlled interference fit rather than guessing from nominal names.
- Cut the tube squarely so the end seats evenly on the barb or in the connector.
- Keep the bend radius above the product’s stated minimum; a kink can restrict flow and concentrate stress.
- Use clamps or retaining features where vibration, pressure pulses or movement could pull the tube off.
- Leak-test the assembled line with the actual liquid or a compatible surrogate before introducing a sensitive or hazardous fluid.
- Label the grade and installation date when contamination, traceability or regular replacement matters.
Designing an FDM channel that has a chance of working
Size the passage for the process, not the CAD screen
Use a channel cross-section comfortably larger than the effective extrusion width and account for the fact that internal corners may partially close. The 100 μm finding from the 2017 review is a warning about scale, not permission to assume that any larger dimension will be leak-free. Print a short geometry coupon with the same orientation and settings before committing to a complex manifold.
Reduce leak paths
- Use generous wall thickness around the passage and avoid placing a channel directly beside an external surface.
- Favor smooth, gradual bends over abrupt internal corners that can trap gaps or restrict flow.
- Keep ports away from thin walls and layer-change features when possible.
- Design O-ring grooves, inserts or barbed interfaces as separate, testable features.
- Consider post-processing only when it is compatible with the polymer and fluid; coating a surface can alter dimensions and may introduce another chemical compatibility problem.
Plan for inspection and cleaning
Opaque printed plastic makes internal inspection difficult. Include access ports, removable covers or sacrificial coupons if you need to verify deposits or blockages. A permanently enclosed channel may be unsuitable for fluids that leave residue or require validated cleaning, even if it passes an initial pressure test.

Failure modes and fixes
The printed part seeps at the walls
Possible causes include insufficient wall fusion, low extrusion, an unfavorable orientation or a channel too close to the outer surface. Reprint a coupon with more perimeters, a larger wall, adjusted extrusion and an orientation that places fewer critical interfaces across the pressure boundary. Re-test rather than assuming sealant has solved the underlying defect.
A printed port leaks while the channel body does not
Threads and barbs concentrate stress and are sensitive to dimensional error. Use a designed insert or O-ring interface, verify the fitting dimensions and support the connection mechanically so the tube or connector is not loading the printed wall.

Flow is lower than expected
Inspect for kinks, partially closed printed passages, trapped debris and undersized fittings. Measure the actual inside diameter rather than relying on a nominal label. For a printed design, compare the as-built passage with the CAD model; for tubing, check that clamps or tight bends are not collapsing the wall.
The system cannot be cleaned confidently
Separate tubing is usually easier to remove and replace. An integrated channel needs a documented flush, dry-out and inspection method; if you cannot verify cleanliness after use, redesign for access or choose a replaceable line.
Decision examples
| Situation | More defensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Prototype pump with a hose routed around a frame | Silicone tubing | Flexibility and quick replacement matter more than integrating the route into a housing. |
| Compact custom manifold with several ports and mounting features | FDM channel, after pressure testing | Integration can reduce fittings and package the geometry in one body. |
| Unknown solvent at elevated temperature | Neither by default; qualify a specific material first | Both silicone and FDM polymers require chemical and temperature compatibility verification. |
| Fluid-contact part requiring documented compliance | A specifically documented tubing grade or certified material system | Generic “silicone” and generic filament do not establish food, pharmaceutical or medical suitability. |
| Very small microfluidic passage | Do not assume desktop FDM is suitable | The 2017 review identified resolution limits around the 100 μm scale in its evaluated context; another manufacturing process may be needed. |
| One-off channel that will be iterated many times | Silicone for early routing; printed integration once geometry stabilizes | A replaceable tube speeds changes, while a final printed body may provide compact integration. |
A practical selection checklist
- Geometry: Is the path fixed and compact, or must it bend and change?
- Dimensions: Can the chosen FDM process produce the required cross-section, ports and wall thickness?
- Pressure: Do you have a product rating for tubing, or a test result for the exact printed part?
- Fluid: Have you checked the exact chemical, concentration and exposure time against the material?
- Temperature: Are continuous, peak and cleaning temperatures covered by the datasheet or test?
- Cleaning: Can the path be flushed, inspected and dried, or is replacement simpler?
- Compliance: Is a food, pharmaceutical, laboratory or medical requirement involved?
- Maintenance: Can an operator replace the fluid-contact component without remaking the whole device?
- Validation: Will you test the assembled system after printing or installation and after relevant conditioning?
Bottom line
Start with silicone tubing for a flexible, serviceable liquid line and select a documented grade for the actual diameter, pressure, temperature and fluid. Consider an FDM-printed channel when custom integration is the main benefit and you can print, inspect and pressure-test the real geometry. Neither material earns a blanket “safe” or “watertight” label: the exact polymer or silicone formulation, dimensions, process, liquid and operating conditions determine whether the system works.
