Squad Building Challenges (SBCs) let you exchange eligible Player Items in Ultimate Team for the reward shown on a challenge. The exact format depends on the game edition and challenge: EA’s FC 27 guidance describes both Item Score-based Simplified SBCs and traditional squad-based Puzzle SBCs, while its FC 26 instructions describe squad submissions. Check the live challenge screen for its requirements, reward and deadline, and review every selected item before confirming: submissions are permanent.
What is an Ultimate Team SBC?
An SBC is an in-game challenge that asks you to contribute Player Items according to rules shown on its screen. In return, completing the required challenge can earn its displayed reward. The items you submit are not merely placed in a temporary lineup: EA says submissions permanently remove those items from your Club. That makes the challenge’s requirements, reward and deadline important to check before you commit.
SBC rules are not identical across editions or across challenges. EA’s Help article, “How Ultimate Team™ Squad Building Challenges work,” covers FC 27 and FC 26 mechanics. The information below reflects that guidance, accessed October 12, 2026; the live game remains the authority for any particular challenge’s current terms. EA Help: How Ultimate Team Squad Building Challenges work.

How do SBCs work in FC 27?
FC 27 has two formats in EA’s current guidance. A Simplified SBC builds progress by contributing eligible Player Items toward an Item Score target. A Puzzle SBC uses a traditional squad submission and its own specified requirements. Identify which format you are opening before planning what to submit: advice that assumes a squad and chemistry may not apply to an Item Score challenge.

| Simplified SBC (FC 27) | Eligible Player Items that add toward the challenge’s Item Score target; progress can be saved across submissions. | The target score, eligible items, progress already made, reward and expiry. The game warns if the selected items’ score greatly exceeds the requirement. |
| Puzzle SBC (FC 27) | A squad of eligible Player Items meeting the challenge’s stated conditions. | Every requirement listed for that squad, plus its reward and expiry. |
| Squad submission (FC 26 guidance) | A squad built to meet the challenge’s requirements. | The challenge’s requirements, reward, whether it is part of a multi-challenge set, repeatability and deadline. |
The format distinction and these mechanics are described in EA’s SBC guidance. Do not assume an FC 26 squad workflow describes every FC 27 challenge.
What requirements can an SBC set?
Puzzle SBC requirements
For FC 27 Puzzle SBCs, EA lists possible requirements including Squad Rating, Chemistry, Player Quality, Leagues, Nations and Clubs. A challenge may use some of these conditions; the list is not a universal checklist that every SBC must satisfy. Read the live challenge’s full requirement text and make sure the proposed squad meets each condition before submitting.
Simplified SBC Item Score
A Simplified SBC instead sets an Item Score target, and eligible Player Items contribute toward it. EA says progress can be saved between submissions. Before adding items, compare the remaining score with the score the selected items will provide. The selection screen warns when the chosen score greatly exceeds the requirement, which can help you avoid committing more value than necessary; it does not make submitted items recoverable.

Where can you get items for an SBC?
EA’s FC 26 instructions identify three in-game sources for Player Items: your Club, SBC Storage and the Ultimate Team Transfer Market. The specific challenge and edition determine which items can be used, so confirm eligibility and availability in the game. An item in your collection is not automatically suitable for every requirement.
- Club: Select eligible items already held in your Club.
- SBC Storage: Use eligible items held in SBC Storage.
- Transfer Market: EA lists the market as a way to obtain Player Items in its FC 26 guidance. The item’s availability and price are live game conditions, not fixed SBC rules.
Using a market-acquired item is still a submission: once it is submitted, it is permanently removed. Consider that item cost alongside the reward, and do not treat the market as a guarantee that a challenge is economical or completable. EA’s source gives no fixed market prices or valuation method. EA Help: SBC item sources and submission rules.
What rewards do SBCs give, and when do you receive them?
The reward depends on the individual SBC. EA’s FC 26 guidance describes rewards that vary by challenge, including Player Items and packs. Some SBCs contain several challenges: an individual challenge may have its own reward, and completing the full set may also award a group reward. Some SBCs are repeatable. None of those possibilities should be read as a promise about a particular live challenge; check its reward display and repeatability information before starting.

For FC 27 Simplified SBCs, EA says the main reward arrives when the full requirement is met. That is distinct from incremental progress: adding items toward the Item Score target does not itself establish that the main reward has been earned. EA’s FC 26 description of individual and group rewards concerns the multi-challenge structure it describes, so do not assume every SBC has both kinds of payout. EA’s SBC reward guidance.

How do expiry dates and partial progress work?
There is no universal SBC schedule or deadline established by EA’s general guidance. Some challenges are available for a limited time. Use the expiry shown on the individual challenge screen and plan around that deadline; the source does not establish a single expiry time or time zone for all SBCs. After an SBC expires, it can no longer accept a submission to complete it.
FC 27 Simplified SBCs have a specific partial-progress caveat: EA says that if one expires before completion, it may provide a reduced untradeable reward based on progress. This is not the same as receiving the full reward, and it does not return the Player Items already submitted. EA does not say that every SBC has this treatment, so do not expect partial completion to pay out unless the challenge’s rules support it. EA Help on SBC expiry and Simplified SBC progress.
How to complete an SBC without submitting the wrong items
- Open the live challenge and identify its edition and format. Determine whether it is a Simplified SBC using Item Score or a Puzzle/squad challenge. Do not apply squad requirements to a score-based challenge, or assume a score-based workflow for a squad submission.
- Read the complete requirements and reward. For a Puzzle SBC, check each listed condition, such as rating, chemistry, quality, league, nation or club. For a Simplified SBC, note the Item Score target and which items are eligible. Check whether the challenge is one part of a larger set and whether the display identifies an individual or group reward.
- Check your intended items and the deadline. Review whether each item comes from your Club, SBC Storage or, where available, the Transfer Market. Compare the challenge’s displayed expiry with the time you have to complete it. Do not rely on a general schedule.
- Review the selection before confirming. Verify the exact items shown, the requirements they satisfy and, for a Simplified SBC, the remaining Item Score. If the selection screen warns that your score greatly exceeds the target, reconsider whether you can meet it with fewer or lower-value items.
- Submit only when the exchange is acceptable. Treat confirmation as final. EA states that submitted items are permanently removed, including items used toward partial progress, and its advisors cannot restore them.
- Check completion and the reward state. Confirm that the challenge records as complete and inspect the reward shown for that challenge or set. For a Simplified SBC, the main reward is tied to meeting the full requirement; partial progress is not equivalent.
This sequence follows the mechanics in EA’s official SBC instructions; individual screens may differ by challenge and edition.
What happens when an SBC submission is final?
EA’s wording is direct: “SBC submissions are final.” Submitted Player Items are permanently removed from the Club, even if they were used toward partial progress rather than a completed requirement. EA also says its advisors cannot restore submitted items. There is therefore no recovery route to rely on after a mistaken confirmation; the useful safeguard is to inspect the item selection before submitting.

Keep the exchange in view when deciding whether to complete a challenge: you give up the submitted items in return for the stated challenge outcome, not a reversible loan of those items. An untradeable partial-expiry reward, where applicable to an FC 27 Simplified SBC, does not undo that exchange. EA Help: submission finality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two live SBCs
When choosing between available challenges, compare like with like rather than ranking them by reward label alone. Their requirements, item costs, completion structures and deadlines can differ. Use the live game values; EA’s general guidance does not provide current details for individual challenges.

| Format and edition | Is it an FC 27 Simplified SBC, FC 27 Puzzle SBC or a squad-based challenge described for FC 26? |
| Requirement | What exact squad conditions or Item Score target apply? |
| Items committed | Which Club, SBC Storage or market items will be removed, and are they eligible? |
| Reward | What does the screen promise, and is it an individual reward, a group reward, tradeable or untradeable? |
| Structure | Is the SBC repeatable or one of multiple challenges in a set? |
| Deadline | What expiry is shown, and what happens to incomplete progress under this specific challenge’s rules? |
Only compare details that the game actually displays. A reward type, repeatability rule, expiry treatment or market cost not shown for a challenge should not be inferred from another SBC.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do SBCs work in FC 27?
Check whether the challenge is a Simplified SBC or a Puzzle SBC. Simplified SBCs build toward an Item Score target with eligible Player Items, and progress can be saved across submissions. Puzzle SBCs use a squad and the requirements shown for that challenge.
When do I get a Simplified SBC reward?
EA says the main reward arrives when the full requirement is met. Progress toward the Item Score target is not itself the full reward; check the challenge screen for its current reward terms.
What happens if a Simplified SBC expires before I finish it?
EA says an FC 27 Simplified SBC may provide a reduced untradeable reward based on progress. That outcome is not guaranteed for every SBC, and submitted items remain permanently removed.
