Short answer: Rivals is FC 27’s ongoing online PvP ladder, Champions is a qualified 15-match competitive Finals event, and Squad Battles is the AI-controlled route with weekly Battle Point ranks. You can earn Champions Qualification Points through either Rivals or Squad Battles, so reaching Division 6 is no longer a requirement.
The three modes share Ultimate Team rewards and progression, but they suit different schedules and levels of online competition. This guide explains how each works, what counts toward qualification, how weekly rewards are calculated, and which mode fits a particular goal.
Rivals, Champions or Squad Battles: the differences at a glance
All three modes sit inside Ultimate Team, but they answer different needs. Rivals supplies repeatable online matches and a ladder. Champions concentrates competition into a qualified event. Squad Battles replaces human opponents with artificial-intelligence-controlled teams and lets you play around your own schedule.

What changed in FC 27 qualification
The most important FC 27 change is that Champions Qualification Points can come from both Rivals and Squad Battles. The current Champions guide explicitly removes the old Division 6 gate. You do not have to climb to Division 6 before you can work toward Champions qualification.
That change creates two practical routes:
- Play Rivals for online matches, division progress and Qualification Points.
- Play Squad Battles for AI matches, Battle Points, weekly rank rewards and Qualification Points.
Higher Rivals divisions earn Qualification Points faster, according to EA’s FC 27 launch update, but every division still contributes. A player who avoids PvP can therefore make progress through Squad Battles instead of treating Rivals as a mandatory prerequisite.
For the current wording, see EA’s Ultimate Team Champions guide and the FC 27 Launch Update.

Purpose and weekly rhythm
Rivals is the always-available online ladder. EA describes it as ongoing PvP play throughout the week: you play human opponents, move through stages and divisions based on results, and earn a weekly reward rank. It is the natural mode for players who want repeated competitive matches rather than a single scheduled event.
Rivals has 11 divisions: Divisions 10 through 1 plus Elite. Your current division and stage show where you sit on the ladder. Weekly rewards depend on both division and rank, and additional wins during the weekly cycle can upgrade the reward tier.
Stages, win streaks and checkpoints
A match result moves you along the stage track. Two consecutive wins start a win streak. Further consecutive wins advance you two stages at a time until a draw or loss ends the streak. Checkpoints protect progression below a stage you have reached, so one bad result does not necessarily erase all progress.
This system makes Rivals more than a simple win-loss rating. A short streak can accelerate a climb, while a draw or defeat ends the double-stage movement and returns you to normal progression. If your priority is reaching a higher division quickly, preserving a streak is valuable; if your priority is Qualification Points, consistent participation still matters even when the ladder moves slowly.

Rivals weekly rewards
Your weekly reward position is tied to division and the number of wins recorded in the active week. Extra wins can upgrade the available reward level. EA states that Rivals rewards release on Thursdays at 06:59 UTC. The release time is a game rule, not a guarantee that every week’s item list will be identical; inspect the current Rivals panel for the exact choices and contents.
Read the current EA SPORTS FC Ultimate Team Rivals guide for the live progression and reward presentation.
Who should choose Rivals?
- Choose Rivals if you want human-versus-human practice throughout the week.
- Choose it when division advancement and faster Qualification Point earning in higher divisions are important.
- Use it to prepare for Champions if you want opponents, pressure and match conditions that resemble the Finals environment.
Rivals is less suitable when you need predictable difficulty, want to pause frequently, or find online matchmaking more stressful than useful. In those cases, Squad Battles provides a controllable alternative without blocking your qualification progress.
How Champions works
Qualification comes first
Champions is not an always-open ladder. You first earn the required Champions Qualification Points through Rivals, Squad Battles or a combination of both. FC 27 does not require Division 6, so the qualification path is open to players in any Rivals division and to players who earn points through Squad Battles.
Keep an eye on the qualification meter in Ultimate Team. It is the authoritative indication of how many points you have and what is still needed for the active event. Because point earnings and event availability are live-service settings, use the in-game value rather than an old community chart.
The 15-match Finals format
Once qualified, Champions Finals use a 15-match format. The event concentrates your matches into a defined run instead of spreading them across the entire week. Results determine the event outcome and the associated rewards shown on the active Finals screen.
Plan your session before entering. Fifteen matches can be completed in one stretch or divided into manageable blocks, but the event’s own timer and entry rules control how long you have. Confirm those details in-game when you qualify; EA’s general guide establishes the 15-match structure, not a permanent schedule for every future event.

How Champions matchmaking is determined
EA says Champions matchmaking considers:
- Your location.
- Your current form in the event.
- Your platform.
- Your cross-play settings.
Current form means your recent Finals results can influence the opponents you meet. Platform and cross-play settings also affect the pool, while location helps the system find an appropriate connection region. These factors explain why two players with similar overall records can see different opponents.
Champions rewards
EA’s guide lists possible Ultimate Team Coins, Qualification Points and Champions Tokens among the reward types. The exact reward package is tied to the active event and can change, so do not promise yourself a particular pack, coin amount or player item based on a past Finals screen. Open the event details before playing and again after completion to verify what your current result grants.
The official Champions guide is the best reference for the current structure, while the FC 27 launch update describes Champions as an exclusive-reward competitive mode.
Who should choose Champions?
- Enter Champions when you want a focused competitive challenge rather than open-ended ladder play.
- Use it when exclusive event rewards matter more than the flexible pacing of Squad Battles.
- Schedule it for a period when you can complete matches without rushing; interruptions and fatigue can affect decision-making even though the game does not change the formal format.
How Squad Battles works
AI opponents and community squads
Squad Battles is Ultimate Team’s PvE mode. You face AI-controlled squads built from real Ultimate Team community squads rather than live opponents. The opponent’s players and chemistry can therefore vary from match to match, but the match is controlled by the selected difficulty and the game’s AI.
EA positions Squad Battles as a flexible way to play at your own pace, complete Objectives, progress Evolutions, earn weekly rewards and work toward Champions qualification. It is the clearest option when you want control over when matches happen or prefer not to enter online PvP.
Battle Points and weekly ranks
Your weekly competition matches award Battle Points. The total places you in a weekly rank, and that rank determines the reward position. The score from each match depends on whether you win or lose and on the difficulty you selected. Higher difficulty can change the match challenge and the resulting score; choose a level you can complete reliably rather than assuming the hardest setting is automatically the most efficient for every player.
Battle Points are specific to the weekly competition. They are not a permanent rating and should not be confused with Champions Qualification Points.

Co-op rules
Squad Battles supports co-op with a friend. There is an important restriction: if either co-op player has no weekly competition matches remaining, neither player earns Battle Points for that match. Check both accounts’ remaining competition matches before starting a co-op game if weekly rank is the objective.
What happens after the weekly match allowance
Additional Squad Battles matches after the weekly competition matches no longer add to your weekly Battle Point score. They can still earn Coins and count toward Objectives, however. That makes post-allowance games useful for completing an Evolution or Objective, but they cannot rescue a weekly rank by adding more Battle Points.

Who should choose Squad Battles?
- Choose it if you prefer AI opponents or need a pause-friendly, self-paced schedule.
- Use it to make Champions progress without playing Rivals.
- Play it for Objectives and Evolutions even after your weekly Battle Point matches are used.
- Use co-op when you want to share the mode, but verify both players still have competition matches available if Battle Points matter.
How to work toward Champions qualification
The following routine works whether you are starting in Rivals, Squad Battles or both:
- Open the Champions panel. Check the current Qualification Point requirement, your balance and the active event’s entry window. The panel is the live authority for those values.
- Pick your primary route. Select Rivals for online ladder matches, Squad Battles for AI matches, or alternate between them according to your schedule.
- Track the weekly limits. In Squad Battles, note how many weekly competition matches remain. In Rivals, note the current weekly reward target and the time until Thursday’s reward release.
- Review progress after each session. Confirm that the expected Qualification Points, Battle Points or Rivals wins were credited before changing modes.
- Enter Finals only when ready. Read the event’s current format, timer and reward panel, then reserve enough uninterrupted time for the 15-match run.
Because EA can tune live-service rules, do not rely on a saved screenshot or an old guide for the current point requirement or reward contents.

A practical weekly plan
If you prefer PvP
- Play Rivals in short sessions early in the week to build wins and Qualification Points.
- Use the division and weekly-rank panels to decide whether additional wins are worth pursuing before the Thursday 06:59 UTC release.
- Enter Champions when your schedule allows a 15-match Finals run.
- Return to Rivals after Finals if you need more Qualification Points or want to maintain ladder progress.
If you prefer PvE
- Play your weekly Squad Battles competition matches at a difficulty that you can complete consistently.
- Track Battle Points and remaining matches before starting co-op.
- Use the resulting rank rewards and Qualification Points to build toward Champions.
- After the weekly allowance ends, play additional matches only for Coins, Objectives or Evolution progress, not for Battle Points.
If you mix both modes
- Use Squad Battles for predictable progress when you have limited time or want to complete Objectives.
- Use Rivals for extra Qualification Points and online practice when you are comfortable with the matchmaking environment.
- Check the Champions panel before committing to Finals so you do not enter during a period when you cannot finish the event.
Rewards, dates and live-service caveats
Rivals and Squad Battles have weekly competition cycles, while Champions rewards are tied to the active Finals event. Reward contents, point thresholds and event details can be adjusted by EA. The stable facts in the current guides are the Rivals structure of 11 divisions, the Thursday 06:59 UTC Rivals reward release, the 15-match Champions Finals format and the Squad Battles Battle Point ranking system.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Division 6 is still mandatory
It is not. FC 27 lets Rivals and Squad Battles both contribute to Champions qualification. Check your Qualification Point balance instead of chasing an outdated division requirement.
Confusing Battle Points with Qualification Points
Battle Points determine your Squad Battles weekly rank. Champions Qualification Points move you toward the Champions entry requirement. They are different currencies with different purposes.
Recommended Free Tools
Expecting extra Squad Battles games to improve your weekly rank
Once the weekly competition matches are used, further games do not add Battle Points. They remain useful for Coins and Objectives, but not for the current weekly score.
Starting co-op without checking both players’ match counts
If either co-op participant has no weekly competition matches left, neither earns Battle Points from that match. Confirm both counters first.
Planning around an old reward list
Rivals rank rewards and Champions event rewards can change. Open the current reward panel in-game on the week or event you intend to play.
Treating matchmaking factors as a guarantee of opponent quality
Champions matchmaking considers location, current form, platform and cross-play settings. Those inputs shape the pool; they do not promise a particular opponent record or connection quality.

What you need to play
You need EA SPORTS FC 27 on your chosen platform, an Ultimate Team club and an active connection suitable for the mode you select. Rivals and Champions require online matchmaking. Squad Battles can be played against the AI, although co-op features involve another player and online services. Platform, cross-play and event availability are shown by the game and can vary with account or system settings.
Bottom line
Use Rivals for ongoing online ladder play, Squad Battles for flexible AI matches and a second qualification route, and Champions for the qualified 15-match Finals event. FC 27’s removal of the Division 6 gate means your choice can follow your preferred opponent type and schedule rather than a mandatory division milestone. Check the live in-game panels for current qualification thresholds and rewards before every weekly cycle or Finals event.
