In Fate/Grand Order, the characters often called “heroes” are officially known as Servants: summoned figures inspired by legend and history, alongside fictional adaptations. You play as a Master in a single-player, turn-based mobile RPG, building a party of Servants to investigate a crisis threatening humanity’s future.
What is Fate/Grand Order about?
The opening story begins at Chaldea, an organization monitoring humanity’s future. When the future it has observed disappears, Chaldea traces the crisis to an anomaly in Fuyuki in 2004. Master candidate Ritsuka Fujimaru meets Mash Kyrielight, a Servant, and the two are sent to investigate. The Fuyuki mission launches the larger Grand Order effort to address humanity’s impending extinction. Read the official Fate/Grand Order -First Order- synopsis.
You do not need prior knowledge of every Fate story to understand that basic setup. The game’s central framing is a mission to investigate threats to humanity, with the story unfolding as you progress.

Who are the heroes in Fate/Grand Order?
“Hero” is a useful shorthand, but it is not the game’s precise character category or a guarantee that every character is morally heroic. The game calls its summoned characters Servants. They are heroic spirits given form for the story and can draw on real historical people, legendary figures, or fictionalized versions of them.

For example, the official Japanese roster identifies Artoria Pendragon with Britain’s legendary king, and also includes figures such as Attila and Gawain. These examples illustrate the blend of history, myth, and adaptation; they are not a complete roster, and the characters should not be treated as historically exact portraits. See the official Japanese Servant roster.
What is a Servant in FGO?
A Servant is a character you summon and use as part of your team. The player character is a Master, the person who works with Servants during the mission. Mash’s introduction shows this relationship early: she is a Servant who accompanies Ritsuka in the Fuyuki incident.

Servants are also part of the game’s party-building and combat systems. The official North American gameplay guide describes choosing party members and considering enemy class matchups. For a beginner, the practical point is that Servants are both story characters and playable units, rather than simply a cast of heroes to follow in a passive narrative.

Is Fate/Grand Order a game or an anime?
Fate/Grand Order is a mobile game. The English Google Play listing describes it as a single-player, turn-based role-playing game with an extensive original story. Its app-based play combines reading the story, assembling a party, and taking part in battles. Check the English Google Play listing for current platform and listing details; store information can change by region and over time.

How do you make Servants stronger?
At a high level, Servant progression involves earning experience and levels, using items and materials for ascension, improving skills, and strengthening a Servant’s Noble Phantasm. The official enhancement guide describing these systems is Japanese-language, so names and exact menu labels can differ in the English client. Consult the official Japanese enhancement guide; use the current in-game menus for localized steps and requirements.

No. Fate/Grand Order Duel is a separate physical tabletop game, not an accessory required to play the mobile RPG. Its player’s guide describes play with miniatures and Command Cards. The app and tabletop game therefore serve different purposes: one is a mobile story-driven RPG, while the other is a physical tabletop experience.
