In Fate/Grand Order, each turn moves from preparation to a three-card attack: use Servant skills and a Master action, choose Command Cards, then evaluate the attacks and enemy response before planning again. Quick, Arts, and Buster cards serve different goals, while matching a Servant or card color can add a bonus.
How a battle turn works
Combat alternates between two player phases and the actions that follow them. In the Tactical Phase, use available Servant skills and choose a Master action. In the Command Phase, select three Command Cards from the available hand. Your Servants then attack, the enemy takes its turn, and the next Tactical Phase begins. Think of the three-card selection as a choice about what you need now: damage, NP charge, Critical Stars, or a chain bonus. The best choice depends on the cards and Servants available, the target’s class matchup, and what the enemy may do next.

Card color is a useful first signal, not a universal ranking. The official battle guide describes these main benefits:

These are general properties, not a promise that one color is always the right pick. Consider whether the selected cards can also activate a chain, whether a particular Servant needs to attack, and how soon you need an NP.
When matching cards adds a bonus
Two different matching rules can affect a command selection. If all three chosen cards belong to the same Servant, that Servant receives an Extra Attack. If all three cards share a color, they trigger a matching color chain: Quick, Arts, or Buster. The official battle-system page associates those chains with Critical Star, NP Gauge, and damage benefits, respectively.

These bonuses are not mutually exclusive: a selection can match both the Servant and the card color. When the hand allows it, compare the value of the Extra Attack and color-chain benefit with the value of using cards from other Servants or colors. A chain is a tactical opportunity, not a reason to ignore the target or your next-turn needs.

Every Servant has a Noble Phantasm (NP). The official USA battle guide says an NP can be used when its gauge reaches 100%. Arts cards are a straightforward way to build that gauge, and three Arts cards create an Arts Chain. The official beginner guidance says an Arts Chain gives participating Servants 20% NP Gauge.

The same beginner article describes NP levels and Overcharge as follows. Treat these exact figures as that article’s published guidance; check the live game if you need to confirm details for a particular version or region.
- NP level begins at 1 and can rise to 5 by combining identical Servants.
- Higher NP level increases NP strength and permits charging above 100%: the article gives a 200% ceiling for levels 2–4 and 300% at level 5.
- It calls charge at 200% or 300% Overcharge. The additional effect depends on the individual Noble Phantasm.
In practice, decide whether to spend an available NP now or build charge for a later turn. If you are pursuing a higher charge level, remember that it requires more gauge than the 100% activation threshold.

Check class advantage and the enemy’s charge
Card color is only one part of the decision. Class advantage affects damage in both directions: according to the official system guide, advantage means dealing more damage and taking less, while disadvantage means dealing less and taking more. Favorable matchups can influence which target to attack and which Servants to protect, but the card bonuses still matter.

Also watch enemy Charge Gauges. The official gameplay guide warns that an enemy’s gauge increases during combat and that a full gauge precedes a powerful attack. A nearly full gauge is a planning signal: weigh the chance to finish the enemy, build an NP, or prepare your party against the coming attack. The guide does not establish that every enemy’s attack or timing is identical, so read the encounter rather than assuming one response fits all.

Skills, reserves, and continuing after defeat
Servant skills and Master actions are part of the Tactical Phase, so use them before locking in the three cards. Their effects can change which attack or survival choice makes sense. The gameplay guide also describes reserve Servants replacing an opening Servant who falls in battle.
If the party is defeated, the official how-to-play guide describes a continue that consumes either three Command Spells or one Saint Quartz and restores Servant HP and NP gauges. This is a resource-spending option, not a free retry; consult the live game for current interface details. See the official how-to-play materials for the guide’s instructions.
A practical decision sequence
- Prepare: In the Tactical Phase, assess the enemy’s class and Charge Gauge, then use relevant Servant skills and a Master action.
- Set a priority: Decide whether this selection should emphasize damage, NP charge, or Critical Stars.
- Read the hand: Check whether three cards can form a same-color chain, a same-Servant Extra Attack, or both.
- Select three cards: Choose the combination whose immediate benefit fits the target and your next-turn plan.
- Reassess after the actions: Note damage, gauge progress, and the enemy response; begin the next Tactical Phase with those changes in mind.
The Fate/Grand Order Official USA Website’s gameplay guide calls the system “easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master” and emphasizes choosing attacks carefully. That captures the core loop: learn what each card and chain offers, then adapt the selection to the battle in front of you.
