Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly on PC requires 64-bit Windows 11, DirectX 12, 16 GB of memory, an SSD and 30 GB of free space. Koei Tecmo’s minimum target is 1280×720 at 30 frames per second on the Best Performance preset; its recommended target is 1920×1080 at 30 FPS on Normal. Those are the dependable starting points. Steam also exposes 60/30 FPS modes and output up to 2160p, but in-game cutscenes remain capped at 30 FPS.

If your hardware is near the minimum, use the 720p preset first. If it is near the recommended tier, start at 1080p and Normal. A controller is also the more comfortable input choice for many PC players because an independent PC review found the keyboard bindings awkward and the on-screen button icons inconsistent.

Official PC requirements at a glance

The requirements below are Koei Tecmo Europe’s current PC specifications, published for the 2026 release information. Both tiers share the same operating-system, memory, API, storage and audio requirements; the main difference is the processor, graphics card, resolution and graphics preset used for the target.

Can your PC run the game?

Check Windows and DirectX first

The operating-system requirement is specifically 64-bit Windows 11. A 32-bit installation or an older Windows edition is outside the published specification even if the processor and graphics card look fast enough. The game also requires DirectX 12 support.

  1. Open Settings in Windows and choose System, then About.
  2. Confirm that System type reports a 64-bit operating system.
  3. Press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and check the System tab for the DirectX version.
  4. Use the Display tab to identify the active GPU and its dedicated video memory.

Windows and DirectX checks do not replace the game’s hardware requirements. They simply rule out two common compatibility blockers before you install.

Compare the processor and graphics card with the right tier

For the minimum profile, compare your CPU with a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 3400G and your GPU with a GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB or Radeon R9 380X 4 GB. For the recommended profile, look for a Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 5 3600XT paired with an RTX 2060 6 GB or RX 5700 XT 8 GB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are example parts, not a guarantee that every similarly named card will perform identically. A card with less than the listed video memory can encounter a different workload from one with the same GPU family and more memory. Laptop versions can also differ from desktop versions. Compare the actual model in your system rather than relying only on a series name.

Why the SSD requirement matters

An SSD is required in both official tiers, so installing to a hard-disk drive does not match the publisher’s specification. Reserve at least 30 GB of free space for the game and leave additional room for Windows, shader caches and updates. The listed 30 GB is the game’s stated storage requirement, not a recommendation to fill a drive to its final gigabyte.

Minimum versus recommended: what changes in practice?

The minimum and recommended rows describe two different goals. Minimum hardware is paired with 720p and the Best Performance preset. Recommended hardware is paired with 1080p and Normal. The recommended list is therefore not a promise of every option at maximum quality; it is the configuration Koei Tecmo uses for its 1080p, 30-FPS target.

If your hardware is closest to… Start with What to expect
Minimum CPU/GPU examples 1280×720, 30 FPS, Best Performance The official entry-level target; prioritize stable frame pacing over image quality.
Recommended CPU/GPU examples 1920×1080, 30 FPS, Normal The official mainstream target for a 1080p 30-FPS presentation.
Above recommended Normal first, then test higher output or quality Extra headroom may allow more resolution or quality, but no universal 60-FPS preset is established.

Do not treat the word “recommended” as evidence of a guaranteed 60 FPS. Koei Tecmo’s published recommended target is 30 FPS at 1080p.

Best settings for a stable 30 FPS

Preset for a near-minimum PC

  1. Install the game on an SSD with at least 30 GB available.
  2. Open the game’s graphics options and select Best Performance.
  3. Set output resolution to 1280×720.
  4. Select the 30-FPS mode.
  5. Play for several minutes in a busy scene before increasing any setting.

This combination is the publisher’s explicit minimum target. If frame pacing is uneven, keep the preset and resolution unchanged while checking background applications, temperatures and graphics-driver status. Dropping below the target resolution may improve load on the GPU, but it is outside the named official baseline.

Preset for a recommended PC

  1. Use an SSD installation and close GPU-heavy background applications.
  2. Select the Normal graphics profile.
  3. Set 1920×1080 output.
  4. Select the 30-FPS mode.
  5. Verify that movement and camera transitions remain consistent before experimenting with higher output.

Normal at 1080p and 30 FPS is the recommended specification’s tested goal. It is the sensible default for a system around the Core i7-8700/Ryzen 5 3600XT and RTX 2060/RX 5700 XT examples.

How to approach higher resolutions

Koei Tecmo’s platform comparison lists Steam output up to 2160p. That describes an available output mode, not a performance guarantee at that resolution. If your system is substantially faster than the recommended examples, raise resolution only after confirming stable frame pacing at 1080p Normal.

  1. Keep the 30-FPS mode while testing resolution changes.
  2. Increase output one step at a time rather than jumping directly to 2160p.
  3. Check a demanding area, not only a quiet menu or corridor.
  4. Return to the previous resolution if frame delivery becomes inconsistent.

There is no independent benchmark establishing one universal 60-FPS graphics preset for every PC. Treat 60 FPS as an option to test on your own hardware, not as an outcome promised by the minimum or recommended table.

60 FPS mode, 30 FPS mode and cutscenes

The Steam version exposes 60/30 FPS modes. Gameplay can therefore be configured around a 60-FPS or 30-FPS target when the hardware and settings allow it. The platform comparison also specifies a 30-FPS cap for cutscenes. A system that renders gameplay at 60 FPS can still show pre-rendered or scripted cinematic sequences at 30 FPS; that change is part of the game’s presentation rather than proof of a graphics failure.

For a consistent first playthrough, 30 FPS is the safest choice because it matches both official hardware targets. Try 60 FPS only after confirming that your GPU, CPU and frame pacing remain stable during ordinary gameplay, transitions and effects-heavy scenes.

Graphics options and model quality

The Steam profile can use Standard or Light Model Quality, depending on the selected profile. Koei Tecmo notes that setting Model LOD to Low or below automatically switches Model Quality to Light. If character or object detail appears lower than expected after changing level-of-detail options, inspect Model Quality before assuming the game has ignored your setting.

  • Resolution: increase only after the selected profile delivers stable frame pacing.
  • Frame-rate mode: use 30 FPS for the publisher’s targets; test 60 FPS separately.

Because the official material does not publish a setting-by-setting performance cost, avoid assuming that one individual slider can be raised without affecting the target. Change one option at a time and retain the previous configuration if performance worsens.

GPU compatibility and what the tested list means

Koei Tecmo states that correct operation of the listed graphics cards was confirmed through the end of December 2025. The NVIDIA compatibility list spans GTX 970 and GTX 1050 Ti through RTX 5090. The AMD list spans R9 380X through RX 9070 XT, and Intel Arc A770 16 GB is also listed.

This is a compatibility record, not a ranking of equal performance. A card appearing on the list means the title was checked on that model; it does not mean a GTX 970 should deliver the same resolution or frame rate as an RTX 5090. Use the minimum and recommended examples to choose an initial profile, then adjust based on observed frame pacing.

Keyboard and mouse or controller?

Why a controller is the practical choice

TechRadar’s 2026 PC review reported nearly 20 hours played with a DualSense and described keyboard support as poor, citing awkward bindings and mismatched button icons. That is a usability finding, not a hardware requirement: the game can be played with keyboard and mouse, but a gamepad may reduce friction during movement, camera control and repeated combat inputs.

A Sony DualSense Wireless Controller is one compatible PC-controller option. Confirm that your operating system and Steam input configuration recognize the pad before launching. The exact icon set shown by the game can vary with the active input method, so check the displayed prompts after switching devices.

When keyboard and mouse still make sense

  • You do not own a controller and prefer not to buy one.
  • You want mouse-based camera movement and are willing to remap keys.
  • You can tolerate prompts that do not match your physical keyboard labels.

Start with the game’s default bindings, then remap the actions you use most often. Keep a written note of the new keys if the on-screen icons remain inconsistent. A controller is a comfort upgrade, not a prerequisite for meeting the PC requirements.

Installation and first-launch checklist

  1. Update Windows 11 and your graphics driver before the first launch.
  2. Install through Steam to an SSD with at least 30 GB free, plus working room for updates and caches.
  3. Confirm the system reports 16 GB RAM and DirectX 12 support.
  4. Choose Best Performance at 1280×720 if your hardware is near minimum, or Normal at 1920×1080 if it is near recommended.
  5. Select 30 FPS for the initial test.
  6. Check that audio output is configured for ordinary stereo playback; the listed audio specification is 48,000 Hz, 16-bit stereo.
  7. Test a controller if keyboard prompts or bindings feel confusing.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game will not start or reports an unsupported system

  • Verify that Windows is 64-bit Windows 11, not a 32-bit installation or an older edition.
  • Run dxdiag and confirm DirectX 12.
  • Install the latest driver for the actual GPU model.
  • Check that the Steam library is on an SSD and that the drive has more than the stated 30 GB requirement available.

Frame rate is unstable at the minimum target

  • Use Best Performance and 1280×720.
  • Close browsers, recording tools and other GPU- or CPU-intensive programs.
  • Check that the game is using the discrete GPU rather than an integrated graphics adapter on a laptop.
  • Monitor temperatures and power settings; throttling can reduce performance even when the component meets the model requirement.
  • Keep 30 FPS until frame pacing is stable before testing higher output.

1080p Normal is not smooth on a recommended-class PC

  • Confirm the installed parts match the recommended examples rather than only the product family.
  • Return temporarily to Best Performance to separate a configuration issue from a hardware limit.
  • Check Model LOD and Model Quality; Low-or-below Model LOD automatically selects Light Model Quality.
  • Test 30 FPS before trying 60 FPS.

Cutscenes switch to 30 FPS

This is expected under the platform specification. Steam gameplay modes include 60/30 FPS, while cutscenes are capped at 30 FPS.

Prompts do not match the controller or keyboard

Reconnect the preferred input device, check Steam Input, and restart the game after changing the active device. If keyboard bindings remain awkward, use a controller and follow the prompts shown for that device.

What hardware should you choose for a new build or upgrade?

For an existing PC, upgrade decisions should follow the target you actually want. A system that only needs 720p at 30 FPS does not need the recommended GPU solely because it is newer. Conversely, buying a card around the minimum examples and expecting 1080p Normal or reliable 60 FPS sets an expectation the official specifications do not support.

Your goal Hardware reference Initial configuration
Entry-level play Core i5-8400/Ryzen 5 3400G class CPU; GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB/R9 380X 4 GB class GPU; 16 GB RAM 1280×720, Best Performance, 30 FPS
1080p target Core i7-8700/Ryzen 5 3600XT class CPU; RTX 2060 6 GB/RX 5700 XT 8 GB class GPU; 16 GB RAM 1920×1080, Normal, 30 FPS
Higher output experimentation Hardware clearly above the recommended examples Start at 1080p Normal; test higher output or 60 FPS separately

Buying decisions should also account for the mandatory Windows 11 64-bit platform, DirectX 12 and SSD installation. A faster graphics card cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system or a hard-disk installation that violates the stated requirement.

Bottom line for each type of PC

  • Near minimum: expect to play at 720p, 30 FPS on Best Performance.
  • Near recommended: target 1080p, 30 FPS on Normal.
  • Well above recommended: Steam offers up to 2160p output and a 60-FPS mode, but test those settings rather than assuming a universal guarantee.
  • Any PC: use an SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 64-bit and DirectX 12; choose a controller if keyboard bindings become a usability problem.
