FAT32 and exFAT are both widely used on USB flash drives, SD cards, and other removable storage. The practical dividing line is simple: FAT32 cannot store an individual file of 4 GiB or larger, while exFAT removes that limit. Compatibility is the reason FAT32 still matters—some older cameras, game consoles, car systems, TVs, and firmware tools support FAT32 but reject exFAT.

For a removable drive shared between modern Windows and macOS computers, exFAT is usually the better choice. Use FAT32 when the device specifically requires it or when you know every file will remain below 4 GiB.

FAT32 vs. exFAT at a glance

Feature FAT32 exFAT
Maximum individual file size 4 GiB (4,294,967,295 bytes) 264 − 1 bytes in Microsoft’s comparison
Journaling No No
Maximum filename length 255 Unicode characters 255 Unicode characters
Case-sensitive No No
Case-preserving Yes Yes
Hard links and symbolic links No No
Sparse files No No
Built-in compression or encryption No No
Permissions and file ownership No No

Neither filesystem provides the features associated with NTFS, APFS, or other more capable filesystems. FAT32 and exFAT have no filesystem-level encryption, access-control lists, ownership tracking, alternate data streams, or built-in compression. They are designed primarily for straightforward storage exchange, not advanced security or recovery.

The 4 GB limit is actually 4 GiB

FAT32’s commonly quoted “4 GB limit” is technically a 4 GiB limit. A file measuring 4,000,000,000 bytes fits because it is below 4,294,967,296 bytes. A file measuring 4,294,967,296 bytes or more does not.

  • Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty

This often appears with large video files, disk images, virtual-machine files, game backups, and database exports. A 4K recording can reach the limit even when the drive has plenty of free space. FAT32 will not split the file automatically; the copy operation normally fails with an error such as “The file is too large for the destination file system.”

exFAT removes this FAT32 per-file restriction, so it is the practical choice for large files on removable storage. The drive still needs enough free space, and the application or device using the file must support exFAT.

What exFAT improves—and what it does not

exFAT was designed for larger removable volumes and files than FAT32 handles comfortably. Its main advantage is capacity flexibility: it can store files far larger than 4 GiB and is a better fit for modern high-capacity USB drives and memory cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, exFAT is not a journaling filesystem. It does not keep a metadata journal that can automatically restore filesystem consistency after power loss or unsafe removal. FAT32 also has no journaling. If a drive is unplugged while data or allocation metadata is being written, either format can become inconsistent.

That means exFAT is not automatically safer than FAT32. Use the operating system’s eject or safely-remove function, and keep a second copy of important files. If a removable drive suddenly stops mounting, the problem may be damaged filesystem metadata rather than a failed flash drive.

Which format should you choose?

Choose exFAT when:

  • You need to store files larger than 4 GiB.
  • The drive will be shared between current Windows and macOS computers.
  • You are formatting a modern, high-capacity removable drive.
  • The target camera, console, TV, car system, or other device explicitly lists exFAT support.

Apple lists both MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT as Windows-compatible formats and recommends ExFAT for Windows volumes over 32GB. That makes exFAT the sensible default for a drive moving between modern Windows and Mac computers.

Choose FAT32 when:

  • The target device explicitly requires FAT32.
  • You are working with older hardware that does not recognize exFAT.
  • Every file will remain below 4 GiB.
  • A device’s documentation specifies FAT32 for boot media, firmware updates, cameras, or consoles.

Do not assume that exFAT works everywhere just because it works on Windows and macOS. Embedded devices often implement only the filesystems their manufacturer chose to support. Check the device manual before formatting a drive that will be used in a camera, console, television, vehicle, router, BIOS utility, or similar equipment.

Is FAT32 limited to 32GB?

The statement that “FAT32 cannot support volumes larger than 32GB” is misleading. Microsoft’s filesystem comparison lists FAT32’s maximum volume size as 232 blocks, rather than 32GB. The 32GB figure is commonly associated with formatting-tool behavior and platform recommendations, not FAT32’s basic on-disk limit.

Likewise, “Windows cannot format FAT32 above 32GB” should not be treated as a universal rule for every Windows release and tool. Microsoft’s current format documentation supports /FS:FAT32 on Windows 10 and Windows 11 without stating a 32GB filesystem limit, although particular graphical workflows or builds may impose their own limits. A recent Windows 11 preview change was also reported to allow FAT32 creation up to 2TB through built-in command-line tooling. That changes a formatting tool’s behavior, not FAT32’s 4-GiB maximum file size.

In practice, the target device is more important than the theoretical volume limit. A device that requires FAT32 may accept only certain partition sizes or cluster layouts even when the filesystem itself can describe a larger volume.

Format a drive in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Disk Management has the same relevant workflow in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Formatting destroys the data on the selected volume, so copy anything important elsewhere first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Format an existing partition

  1. Right-click Start and select Disk Management. Alternatively, press Windows + R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and select OK.
  2. In the lower pane, identify the correct drive and partition. Check its capacity and drive letter carefully.
  3. Right-click the volume and select Format.
  4. Choose FAT32 or exFAT if the dialog offers the required option, then confirm the prompts.

Disk Management cannot format a volume that is currently in use, including the active Windows partition. For a new partition, right-click unallocated space, select New Simple Volume, follow the wizard, and choose the filesystem during the Format Partition step.

Use Command Prompt or Terminal

Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and replace E: with the correct drive letter:

format E: /FS:FAT32 /Q /V:MEDIA

For exFAT:

format E: /FS:exFAT /Q /V:MEDIA

Here, /FS: selects the filesystem, /Q requests a quick format, and /V:MEDIA sets the volume label. Verify the drive letter before pressing Y at the confirmation prompt. Formatting the wrong volume permanently destroys its filesystem contents.

  • Brand Yourself - Brand the flash drive with your company's name and provide company's overview, policies, etc. to the newly joined employees or your customers

A quick format creates a new file table and root directory but does not fully overwrite the volume or perform a sector-by-sector scan. Microsoft recommends using /Q only on a previously formatted volume known to be healthy. A normal format takes longer because it fully erases existing data according to Microsoft’s Disk Management documentation.

Allocation-unit size

Windows normally chooses an appropriate allocation-unit, or cluster, size. You can specify one with /A:, for example:

format E: /FS:exFAT /A:128K /Q

Larger clusters can waste more space when a drive contains many small files, while unusual or incompatible choices can make formatting fail or cause problems on the target device. Use the default unless the device documentation or a specific workload requires another setting.

Using DiskPart

DiskPart is useful when a drive has damaged partitions or unallocated space, but it is also easy to misuse. Run it as administrator and confirm the disk number using its size before selecting it:

diskpart
list disk
select disk 1
create partition primary
format fs=exfat label=MEDIA quick

The selected disk remains in focus for later commands. Selecting the wrong disk can therefore apply partitioning or formatting commands to your system drive. Use clean only when you deliberately intend to remove the selected disk’s partition information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Format the drive on macOS

Apple’s Disk Utility uses the label MS-DOS (FAT) for FAT-compatible formatting rather than simply displaying “FAT32.” Apple recommends ExFAT for Windows volumes over 32GB.

  1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
  2. Select View → Show All Devices.
  3. Select the physical storage device at the top of the sidebar, not only an existing volume beneath it.
  4. Click Erase.
  5. Set Scheme to GUID Partition Map.
  6. Set Format to MS-DOS (FAT) for FAT-compatible formatting or ExFAT for the modern cross-platform choice.
  7. Enter a name, click Erase, and then click Done.

Selecting the physical device is important because the partition scheme menu may not appear when only a volume is selected. Erasing deletes the device’s existing data.

Repair FAT32 or exFAT problems in Windows

If the drive was removed during a write and now shows errors or fails to mount, first try another USB port, cable, card reader, or computer. If the data is important, avoid repeatedly writing to the drive and make a sector-level copy or consult a recovery specialist before attempting repairs.

For a logical filesystem check on drive E:, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chkdsk E: /f

The /f option repairs logical filesystem errors. Use /r when you also need Windows to locate bad sectors and attempt to recover readable information:

chkdsk E: /r

/r includes /f and can take considerably longer. If the volume is in use, Windows may display:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the computer restarts? (Y/N)

Without /f, CHKDSK reports errors but does not repair them. Repairs to FAT filesystems can alter the file allocation table and may cause data loss. If CHKDSK finds lost chains, answering Y to “Convert lost chains to files?” saves recovered fragments in the root directory as files such as File0000.chk. Answering N discards the lost-chain contents.

Bottom line

For most current USB drives shared between Windows and macOS, choose exFAT. It accepts files larger than 4 GiB and avoids FAT32’s most disruptive limitation. Choose FAT32 when compatibility with a particular older or embedded device is more important than large-file support.

Neither format offers journaling, permissions, encryption, compression, or advanced file links. Neither protects data from unsafe removal. The correct format is therefore determined by two questions: Does the target device support exFAT? and Will any file reach 4 GiB?

FAQ

Can FAT32 store a 4GB file?

Only if the file is below 4 GiB, or 4,294,967,296 bytes. A 4,000,000,000-byte file fits, but a file at or above 4,294,967,296 bytes does not.

Is exFAT better than FAT32 for a USB drive?

Usually, yes, when the drive is used with modern computers and may contain files larger than 4 GiB. FAT32 remains better when an older camera, console, car system, TV, or other device specifically requires it.

Does exFAT have journaling?

No. Microsoft lists both FAT32 and exFAT as lacking metadata-only journaling. Safely eject removable drives and keep backups of important data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will exFAT work on every device that supports FAT32?

No. exFAT support must be implemented by the device. Older hardware may support FAT32 but reject exFAT even though the drive works normally on Windows and macOS.

Does formatting a drive erase everything?

Yes. Formatting replaces the filesystem structures and makes existing data inaccessible; a normal format also fully erases according to Microsoft’s documentation. Back up the drive before formatting.

Can I convert FAT32 to exFAT without losing files?

You should plan to copy the files to another location, format the drive as exFAT, and copy them back. Formatting is destructive, and relying on recovery after an attempted conversion is risky.

The Bottom Line

Use exFAT for a modern removable drive shared between Windows and macOS or for files larger than 4 GiB. Use FAT32 when a specific legacy or embedded device requires it. Neither filesystem provides journaling or built-in security features, so compatibility and file size—not safety—should drive the decision.
