For a drive used only with Windows, choose NTFS if you need to store files of 4 GiB or larger or want Windows file-system features such as access controls, compression, or metadata journaling. FAT32 is mainly the right choice when a device specifically requires it. If a Mac must write to the drive, consider exFAT: macOS can read NTFS but does not write to it by default, and Apple recommends exFAT for Windows-compatible volumes larger than 32 GB. Back up the drive before formatting; formatting erases its files.
FAT32 or NTFS: Which should you choose?
Use this decision guide for general-purpose external storage. A particular television, console, camera, router, or other device may require a specific format, so check that device’s documentation before changing the drive.
- Windows only: Choose NTFS for a straightforward default, especially if you need large individual files or Windows file-system features.
- A Mac needs to write to the drive: Consider exFAT rather than NTFS. Apple says macOS may read NTFS volumes but does not write to them by default.
- A device or application explicitly requires FAT32: Use FAT32 only if its file-size limit is compatible with the files you need to store.
- Before changing formats: Copy the drive’s files somewhere else. Formatting erases the files on the selected disk or volume.
How FAT32 and NTFS compare
| Factor | FAT32 | NTFS |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum individual file size | 4 GiB, according to Microsoft’s 2023 file-system comparison. | Microsoft’s comparison lists 264−1 bytes as the maximum file size. Actual supported limits depend on Windows version and volume configuration. |
| Windows features | Microsoft’s comparison does not list metadata-only journaling, access-control lists, file-system encryption, or built-in compression for FAT32. | Microsoft lists metadata-only journaling, access-control lists, file-system encryption, and built-in compression for NTFS. |
| Mac writing | Apple lists MS-DOS (FAT) among formats compatible with Windows. | macOS may read NTFS, but Apple says it does not write to NTFS by default. |
| Typical use | Useful when a specific device requires it, provided the file-size limit is not a problem. | A practical choice for Windows-only storage, particularly when Windows features or larger files matter. |

FAT32’s maximum individual file size is 4 GiB. That is a per-file limit, not the total storage capacity of the drive: a drive can have free space and still reject a single file that reaches or exceeds this limit. If you need to keep such a file intact, FAT32 is unsuitable.

Microsoft’s comparison lists a much larger NTFS maximum file size, but that figure is a file-system comparison value, not a guarantee that every Windows version or volume setup supports every possible size. Microsoft’s NTFS overview, for example, describes support for volumes and files up to 8 PB on Windows 10 version 1709 and later and Windows Server 2019 and later when using 2,048 KB clusters. That specific condition should not be treated as a universal NTFS limit.

What if you use the drive with a Mac?
NTFS may not suit a drive that needs native write access on macOS: Apple says a Mac may read NTFS volumes but does not write to them by default. Apple lists MS-DOS (FAT) and exFAT among Windows-compatible formats, and its Disk Utility instructions recommend MS-DOS (FAT) for Windows-compatible volumes of 32 GB or less and exFAT for those above 32 GB. This is Apple’s formatting guidance, not a guarantee that every third-party device supports either format.

Check device requirements before formatting
Do not assume that every television, game console, camera, router, or media player supports NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT. Compatibility depends on the particular model and its software. If the drive must connect to one of these devices, check its documentation for the required file system and any file-size restrictions before reformatting.

Formatting erases the files on the selected disk or volume. Copy anything you need to keep to another location and confirm the copy is accessible before formatting. Apple states, “Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it.”
