For under-chin fullness, FDA-approved deoxycholic acid injections and liposuction are different options—not interchangeable versions of the same treatment. In the United States, deoxycholic acid (sold as Kybella) is approved for submental fat in adults only; liposuction is surgery that can remove localized fat from several areas. Injections may require repeated visits, while liposuction involves surgical risks and postoperative activity limits. The right choice depends on the treatment area, skin elasticity, health, goals, and a clinician’s assessment.
What each treatment does—and where it can be used
Deoxycholic acid injections are an under-chin treatment in the United States
Kybella is a prescription injection containing deoxycholic acid. The current U.S. label indicates it for improving the appearance of moderate-to-severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults. A health professional administers it. Its approved indication is limited to the area under the chin.
The distinction matters if the concern is on the abdomen, thighs, arms, or another body area. FDA does not approve Kybella for those areas and recommends against that unapproved use. As FDA put it in its September 15, 2026 drug safety communication: “Kybella is not approved for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region and such use is not recommended.” An injection product being offered for a different area—or being sold online—does not make that use FDA-approved.

Liposuction is an operation in which a surgeon uses a cannula, inserted through small incisions, to remove excess fat from selected areas. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) lists areas including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, chest, and face or neck. It is a contouring procedure for localized fat, not a treatment for obesity.

Liposuction does not reliably correct loose skin. If the skin has limited elasticity, it may not contract smoothly over the new contour; laxity can affect the result, and another procedure may sometimes be considered. The surgeon must assess whether the desired change is achievable with fat removal alone.
How to compare the options for your concern
The comparison below summarizes FDA and ASPS guidance. It is not a head-to-head clinical trial: the available sources do not establish that injections and liposuction produce equivalent results or quantify how much fat each removes across different areas.
| Decision point | Deoxycholic acid injection | Liposuction |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. treatment scope | FDA-approved for submental fat in adults; not approved for other body areas. | Surgical removal and contouring of localized fat in selected areas, subject to a surgeon’s assessment. |
| Course | May involve multiple visits. FDA describes up to six treatments, spaced at least one month apart. | An operation followed by recovery and activity restrictions. |
| What recovery can involve | Injection-site swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, or firmness (induration). | Bruising and swelling, reduced activity, and possibly a surgeon-directed compression garment. Swelling can continue to improve for months. |
| Important cautions | Do not confuse the approved under-chin indication with unapproved injections or use elsewhere. FDA’s 2026 communication highlights serious reports associated with out-of-area use and persistent injection-site nodules or masses. | Risks include anesthesia and surgical complications, contour irregularities, infection, and complications involving blood clots, the heart, or lungs; loose skin may remain. |
| Factors in candidacy | Under-chin fullness, relevant medical and procedural history, and clinician assessment. | Localized fat, health, goals, skin elasticity, and clinician assessment. |
If the concern is a double chin
Both options can enter a discussion about under-chin contouring, but that does not make them identical. Deoxycholic acid has a specific FDA-approved indication for submental fat in adults. Liposuction is a surgical alternative for selected localized-fat concerns. A clinician needs to determine whether fullness is suitable for either procedure and whether factors such as skin laxity or anatomy may limit the result.

Liposuction may be considered for localized fat in these areas after assessment. FDA-approved Kybella should not be presented as an approved injectable equivalent for them: its U.S. indication is under the chin. FDA also warns of serious adverse reactions associated with deoxycholic acid injections used outside that region.
What results to expect—and what is not established
Results depend on the treatment area and the person
Kybella is intended to improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe under-chin fullness in adults. That indication is not a promise of a particular degree of change for an individual. The cited sources do not establish a universal number of milliliters, percentage of fat removed, or number of sessions that guarantees a result.
ASPS says liposuction results can be long-lasting when weight and general fitness remain stable. Substantial weight gain can alter the result. The visible contour takes time to emerge because swelling and fluid retention must subside, a process that may take several months. Liposuction cannot improve lax skin tone, and another procedure may sometimes be needed.

There is no supported universal “winner”
The sources available for this comparison do not provide a direct randomized head-to-head trial across body areas, nor do they support a universal numerical comparison of fat removed. Separate guidance about each procedure cannot show that one is more effective for every patient. The practical decision is whether a treatment is approved and appropriate for the area, whether the desired contour is realistic, and whether its risks and recovery fit the person’s circumstances.
How many injection treatments are involved?
FDA’s September 2026 communication says patients may receive up to six treatments, at least one month apart. This is the described maximum and minimum spacing—not a promise that everyone needs six visits or that a particular number will achieve a particular result. A healthcare professional determines whether treatment is appropriate and how to proceed under the current label.
Expect the course to involve more than one appointment if repeat treatments are planned. Common reactions include swelling, bruising or hematoma, pain, numbness, redness, and induration. The sources do not establish a single downtime period that applies to every patient, so ask the treating clinician what to expect for your treatment and daily activities.
Liposuction recovery: a practical timeline
Recovery varies with the procedure and individual circumstances. ASPS describes the following general pattern; it is not a substitute for the operating surgeon’s instructions.
- First week: Patients may need a compression garment or elastic bandage if their surgeon directs it, to help minimize swelling and support healing. Activity should be significantly limited.
- Weeks two to three: Many patients start feeling much better and may return to work, depending on the job. Returning to work does not mean full recovery: exercise and other activity may still be restricted.
- Weeks four to five: Bruising is expected to improve around this period.
- Week six onward: Swelling continues to improve. The final contour can take several months to become clearer as swelling and fluid retention subside.
Do not select or wear a post-surgery compression garment based on a general recommendation. Whether to use one, and the garment and duration, are matters for the treating surgeon. Follow individualized instructions about movement, wound care, and when to resume work, exercise, or other activities.
Risks: what the FDA and surgeons warn about
Deoxycholic acid injections
Common adverse reactions include injection-site swelling (edema), bruising or hematoma, pain, numbness, redness (erythema), and induration. The current label also warns about marginal mandibular nerve injury, which can affect facial movement; difficulty swallowing (dysphagia); injection-site reactions; and harm to vulnerable anatomic structures. Ulceration, tissue death (necrosis), and infection at the injection site are among the labeled risks.

FDA’s September 2026 communication added emphasis on serious adverse reactions associated with use outside the submental region. The agency describes reports that include blurred or reduced vision, involuntary eye contractions, muscle or nerve damage and weakness, numbness, and difficulty walking. It also reports persistent injection-site nodules or masses: nodules are 3 cm or smaller, while masses are larger than 3 cm, and some may require medical intervention.
FDA identified 129 reported cases of adverse events following deoxycholic acid injection outside the approved submental region, and 117 reported cases of unresolved injection-site nodules or masses. Among the unresolved nodules or masses, mean duration at the time of reporting was 143 days—approximately five months. These are FDA-identified case counts and a mean duration at reporting, not incidence rates or estimates of an individual patient’s probability of harm.
Unapproved fat-dissolving injections
FDA says products marketed as fat-dissolving injections that are not FDA-approved have not been evaluated by the agency for safety or effectiveness. FDA reports associated with such products include permanent scars, serious infections, skin deformities, cysts, and deep, painful knots. Unsafe injection technique or administration by an unlicensed person can add risks.

How to prepare for a consultation
Questions for a deoxycholic acid consultation
- Is the area being treated the submental region, and is the proposed use within the U.S. FDA-approved indication?
- What product will be injected, and who will administer it?
- How many treatments might be considered, and what spacing is planned under the current label?
- What reactions should prompt a call or urgent medical attention?
- How do my medical history and any prior face, neck, or chin procedures affect the assessment?
Disclose prior procedures in the face, neck, or chin and relevant health conditions to the clinician. Consult the current FDA-approved label for the full precautions. Seek medical attention for serious symptoms such as an asymmetric smile or facial weakness, difficulty swallowing, or a serious injection-site reaction.

Questions for a liposuction consultation
ASPS advises choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon and checking that surgery will take place in a facility that is appropriately accredited, state-licensed, or Medicare-certified. A consultation should address medical history, medications, goals, likely outcomes, and risks. Ask how skin elasticity affects the expected contour, what recovery limits apply to your work and activities, and what instructions you will receive after surgery.

Neither an article nor a general procedure description can establish whether you are a candidate. A clinician who evaluates your anatomy, health, and goals is needed to make that judgment. The decision should account for the approved scope of the proposed treatment, the possibility of limited results, the risks you are willing to accept, and the time you can allow for recovery.

Which is better for a double chin: Kybella or liposuction?
There is no universal winner. Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is FDA-approved in the United States to improve moderate-to-severe fullness associated with submental fat in adults. Liposuction is a surgical option for selected localized-fat concerns. A clinician must assess the anatomy, skin elasticity, goals, health, and tradeoffs; the available guidance does not establish that one option is superior for every person or provide a direct head-to-head trial.
Can fat-dissolving injections be used on the stomach, thighs, or arms?
Kybella’s U.S. FDA-approved indication is limited to fat under the chin in adults. FDA does not approve it for the abdomen, thighs, arms, or other areas and recommends against use outside the submental region. Liposuction may be considered for localized fat in several body areas, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, and chest, after a surgeon evaluates whether it is appropriate.
How many Kybella treatments might someone need, and how far apart are they?
FDA’s September 2026 communication describes up to six treatments, spaced at least one month apart. That is not a requirement that every patient receive six treatments, nor a guarantee of a particular result. A healthcare professional determines whether treatment is suitable and discusses a plan under the current label.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How long is recovery after liposuction?
Recovery continues after a person returns to work. ASPS says activity is significantly limited during the first week; many patients feel much better and may return to work in weeks two to three depending on their job, while exercise and other activity can remain restricted. Bruising may improve around weeks four to five, and swelling continues to improve from week six onward. The final contour may take several months to become clearer. Follow the operating surgeon’s specific instructions.

Is a compression garment always needed after liposuction?
Not as a universal rule. ASPS describes an elastic bandage or compression garment as something a surgeon may direct a patient to use to help minimize swelling and support healing. Whether you need one, which garment is appropriate, and how long to wear it should come from your surgeon—not a general recommendation.
Are fat-dissolving injections safe?
Safety depends on the product, treatment area, administration, and individual circumstances. Kybella has labeled risks such as swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, nerve injury affecting facial movement, swallowing difficulty, and injection-site ulceration, necrosis, or infection. FDA’s September 2026 communication also highlights serious reports associated with deoxycholic acid use outside the submental region and persistent nodules or masses. Products such as Aqualyx, Lipodissolve, Lipo Lab, and Kabelline are not FDA-approved; FDA has not evaluated their safety or effectiveness.
What do FDA’s reported case numbers mean?
FDA’s September 2026 communication identified 129 reported adverse-event cases after deoxycholic acid injection outside the approved submental region and 117 reports of unresolved injection-site nodules or masses. The mean duration of those unresolved nodules or masses at reporting was 143 days, approximately five months. These are reported case counts and a duration at reporting—not incidence rates or an estimate of an individual’s probability of harm.
What should I ask before agreeing to an injectable treatment?
Confirm whether the treatment is for the under-chin area and within the U.S. FDA-approved indication. Ask the name of the product, who will administer it, how many treatments and what spacing are being considered, and which symptoms should prompt medical attention. Disclose relevant health conditions and any prior face, neck, or chin procedures. Be cautious if an injectable is proposed for another body area or if online availability is presented as proof of approval.
How do I choose a liposuction surgeon and facility?
ASPS advises choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon and checking that the surgery facility is appropriately accredited, state-licensed, or Medicare-certified. Discuss medical history, medications, goals, likely outcomes, risks, skin elasticity, recovery limits, and postoperative instructions at consultation. Suitability and the choice of procedure require an individualized assessment.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: In the United States, FDA-approved deoxycholic acid injections are an under-chin treatment for adults, not an approved injectable alternative for fat on the stomach, thighs, or arms. Liposuction can contour localized fat in selected areas but is surgery, brings postoperative restrictions and surgical risks, and may not correct loose skin. Neither option is right for everyone; discuss the treatment area, realistic goals, health, skin elasticity, risks, and recovery with a qualified clinician.
