Fastfetch 2.70.0 changes both the Disk custom-format placeholders and the Disk JSON schema. The {size-available} placeholder has been removed, {size-free} now follows the disk.useAvailable setting, and JSON output no longer contains bytes.available or bytes.used. Update configurations and consumers before treating a 2.70.0 value as directly comparable with older output.
What changed in Fastfetch 2.70.0
The change affects two output paths: custom Disk formatting and JSON data. The release does not report a performance statistic; it changes which definition of “free” is displayed and which raw fields are exposed.

Why does {size-free} now show a different number?
Fastfetch now uses {size-free} as the formatted representation of whichever free-space concept disk.useAvailable selects. With that option disabled, the value represents filesystem free capacity. With it enabled, the value represents space available to the current user, which can be lower when quotas or other per-user limits apply.

Consequently, two machines—or the same machine before and after an option change—can show different values even when the underlying volume has not changed. The number is not necessarily a measurement error; it may be a different definition of available space.

How to migrate a custom Fastfetch format
- Find the removed field. Search every Fastfetch configuration and script for the literal
{size-available}. - Choose the intended meaning. Decide whether the display should show filesystem capacity that is free on the volume or space the current account can actually use.
- Set the option explicitly. Leave
disk.useAvailabledisabled for filesystem-free capacity. Enabledisk.useAvailablewhen quota-aware, current-user availability is the desired metric. - Replace the placeholder. Use
{size-free}for the selected formatted value. If a script needs unformatted quantities, use{bytes-used}and{bytes-total}in the custom format and perform any additional calculation in the script. - Check the result under the real account. On a quota-managed Windows system, compare output while logged in as the user whose available space matters; an administrator’s view may not represent another account’s allowance.
There is no one-for-one replacement that preserves the old, always-user-available meaning independently of configuration. The option now determines what {size-free} means, so configuration should document that choice.
What JSON consumers must change
Programs parsing Fastfetch 2.70.0 Disk JSON must stop reading bytes.available and bytes.used. Those properties are no longer emitted. The stable fields described for this change are bytes.free and bytes.total.

used = bytes.total - bytes.freeThat calculation derives used space from the remaining fields. Treat the values as byte counts, not preformatted strings, and handle missing fields defensively if one consumer must support both pre-2.70.0 and 2.70.0 output during a rollout.

Windows behavior and quota decisions
On Windows 10 version 1809 (build 17763) and later, Fastfetch 2.70.0 reports whole-volume capacity and free space by default. This default answers “how much space is free on the volume?” rather than “how much can this user consume?”

Set disk.useAvailable to true when per-user quotas or similar restrictions make current-user availability the meaningful value. Keep it disabled when monitoring total volume capacity, comparing disks at the filesystem level, or reporting a value intended to agree with other whole-volume tools. Make this choice explicit in shared configuration so a future reader does not mistake a quota-aware number for total volume free space.
Migration checklist
- Search custom formats for
{size-available}. - Decide whether “free” means filesystem free or current-user available.
- Set
disk.useAvailabledeliberately rather than relying on an assumed default. - Replace removed JSON properties and calculate used bytes as
bytes.total - bytes.free. - Rebaseline dashboards, alerts and snapshots that compare Fastfetch output across versions.
- Test Windows hosts with quotas separately from ordinary whole-volume monitoring.
Release availability
Fastfetch 2.70.0 is distributed through the fastfetch-cli/fastfetch project, with downloadable archives for supported platforms and accompanying checksums. Verify the archive and checksum using the project’s release distribution before deploying it across managed systems.

What this means for existing reports
A historical report generated before 2.70.0 may have used a different definition for {size-free} and may contain JSON properties that no longer exist. When comparing old and new records, record the Fastfetch version and the disk.useAvailable setting alongside the value. Otherwise, a change in semantics can look like a sudden change in disk capacity.
