There is no verified nationwide ranking that proves one ISP is the fastest for every U.S. home. AT&T says Ookla named AT&T Fiber America’s Fastest Home Internet for the fourth consecutive time, based on Speedtest Intelligence data from the second half of 2025. That is a provider-reported award—not a guarantee about service at your address. To find the fastest home internet you can actually buy, check local availability and compare download, upload, latency, and plan terms.
Which ISP is fastest?
The answer depends on what “fastest” means, which measurement period and test method a ranking uses, the connection technology, and which providers serve your address. A national award can identify a strong overall result in a particular study, but it cannot establish which provider will perform best at an individual home.
On February 23, 2026, AT&T announced that Ookla named AT&T Fiber America’s Fastest Home Internet for the fourth consecutive time. AT&T says the recognition was based on Ookla’s analysis of Speedtest Intelligence data from the second half of 2025. The underlying Ookla report is not available here to independently assess, so treat this as AT&T’s account of the award rather than a universal provider ranking. AT&T’s announcement quotes Jenifer Robertson, executive vice president and GM of AT&T Mass Markets: “Being recognized for the best and fastest home internet reinforces what we’ve been building for years – a superior network that customers can depend on.”
Rankings from other services should not be combined with that award as if they measure the same thing. For example, SpeedOf.Me describes its H1 2026 U.S. rankings as median real-world download speeds from in-browser tests, with a minimum-sample threshold and rankings by state. That differs from AT&T’s description of Ookla’s second-half 2025 analysis. The study period, test approach, and metric all matter. See SpeedOf.Me’s ranking methodology.

How to find the fastest internet provider near you
- Search your address on the FCC National Broadband Map. Review the providers, connection technologies, and advertised speeds shown for your location. The FCC says providers submit fixed-broadband availability data by location twice a year. Its map instructions explain how to search an address and use the results: How to Use the FCC’s National Broadband Map.
- Confirm service and plans directly with providers. Check your exact address on each provider’s site or contact the provider. Confirm the available plan, advertised upload and download speeds, price, equipment requirements, and any introductory terms before switching.
- Compare the connection, not just the headline number. Consider upload speed, latency, and technology alongside download speed. A plan’s advertised maximum is not the same as a measured result at your home.
- Check whether the local evidence answers your question. A provider-wide award or broad ranking is useful context, but it does not substitute for address-specific availability and plan details.
The FCC map is an availability tool, not a speed-test leaderboard or a guide to affordability or adoption. The FCC explains these distinctions and how consumers can challenge inaccurate availability listings in its broadband data guidance and availability-challenge instructions.
What to compare when choosing a home internet plan
| Factor | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Address-level availability | A provider is only a practical option if it serves your home. | Use the FCC map, then confirm the exact address and plans with the provider. |
| Download speed | It affects downloads and many everyday online activities. | Separate an advertised plan maximum from a measured speed or award claim. |
| Upload speed | It matters for sending large files and video calls. | Compare the plan’s upload figure as well as its download figure; some fiber plans offer symmetrical speeds. |
| Latency | It affects responsiveness in interactive uses. | Consider it separately from throughput: a high download speed does not by itself establish low latency. |
| Connection technology | Fiber, cable, and fixed wireless have different performance characteristics and availability. | Check which technology is actually offered at your address. Technology alone does not guarantee an individual result. |
| Measurement period and method | Rankings can change with the data window and testing approach. | Look for the publisher, time period, metric, and method behind any ranking. |
How fiber, cable, and fixed wireless fit into the choice
Fiber
Fiber can provide symmetrical download and upload speeds, which can be useful when a household uploads large files or makes frequent video calls. BroadbandNow’s 2026 overview says fiber leads on performance, but that secondary analysis is not a complete measurement study and does not establish the best provider for every address. Rank #2
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Cable
Cable remains a viable alternative where fiber is not available. Compare the actual plan’s download and upload figures and other terms rather than assuming a result from the technology label alone.

5G home internet can also be an option where wired service is limited. Its presence on an availability list does not tell you how it will perform at your home; confirm the available plan and evaluate it against other local choices.

Why a national “fastest” label cannot settle your local choice
- Coverage differs by address. A provider can win a national or broad-market comparison and still not serve your home.
- Measurements answer different questions. An award based on one period and service may not be comparable to another publisher’s median download-speed ranking.
- Download speed is only one measure. Upload speed and latency can matter just as much for particular household needs.
- Availability is not performance. The FCC map reports provider-submitted availability and advertised speeds; it does not certify a speed-test result for your connection.
