FAST channels are free to watch because advertising pays for the programming, while cable TV charges a recurring package fee. In a January 2026 CableTV.com survey, the estimated average monthly streaming bill was $30 versus $147 for cable, but those figures are U.S. survey averages rather than guaranteed household prices. FAST services still require internet access and compatible hardware, and their lineups may not include your local stations or regional sports. Cable generally costs more but packages local broadcast stations, national networks, news and sports under one provider.
What FAST channels and cable TV actually are
FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. It delivers internet channels in a linear, always-on format: you open a channel and watch the program that is currently airing instead of selecting every title on demand. Amazon describes the model as access to a broad range of content without a subscription or viewing fee. Advertising funds the service.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes providers such as Pluto TV and Tubi as offering linear video channels over the internet at no cost to consumers. “Free” refers to the programming subscription; you still pay for an internet connection and may need a streaming device or smart-TV app.

Cable TV is a paid multichannel package supplied by a multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD). The package normally combines local broadcast stations retransmitted in your market with national cable networks, news, entertainment and sports. Exact channels, prices and regional rights depend on the provider and your address.

That distinction matters when you compare the services. A FAST app can replace some entertainment channels without a TV subscription, but it is not automatically a replacement for every local station, sports package or premium network in a cable bundle.
Monthly cost: the headline difference and the costs behind it
| Cost element | FAST services | Cable TV |
|---|---|---|
| Programming subscription | No programming fee; ads support the service. | Recurring package charge. |
| Internet service | Required to stream channels; price depends on your internet provider and plan. | May be purchased separately or bundled with TV; the TV bill may not show the full household internet cost. |
| Equipment | Compatible smart TV, streaming stick, streaming player or mobile device. You may already own one. | Provider equipment or a set-top box may carry rental or activation charges. |
| Taxes, fees and regional charges | Not included in the free programming claim; app-specific purchases can still exist. | Taxes, broadcast-retransmission charges, regional sports fees and other line items vary by market. |
| Promotional pricing | Free access is generally the service model, although a device or optional paid subscription can cost money. | Introductory rates can expire, raising the regular bill. |
CableTV.com’s January 2026 U.S. survey/report estimated an average streaming bill of $30 per month and an average cable bill of $147 per month. At those estimates, a full year would be about $360 for streaming and $1,764 for cable, a difference of roughly $1,404. The figures are one publisher’s survey estimates, not a price list or a guarantee for any household. Your result changes with internet bundling, taxes, equipment rental, promotional periods and premium or sports tiers.
The same CableTV.com report said 42% of respondents used FAST services to help keep monthly costs down. That finding indicates how households use FAST in practice: many keep an internet connection and add free channels, rather than treating FAST as a zero-cost replacement for all communications services.

- Write down the cable bill’s regular, post-promotion amount, including equipment, broadcast, sports, regional and regulatory fees.
- Separate internet from television if the provider bundles them. If cancelling cable changes the internet price, use the new standalone internet price in your calculation.
- List one-time hardware purchases, such as a streaming stick or player, and spread them over the number of months you expect to use the device.
- Add any paid services you would retain for shows or sports that FAST does not carry.
- Compare the resulting monthly and annual totals with the cable bill after promotional pricing ends.
This approach prevents the common mistake of comparing a free app with only the promotional portion of a cable bill while ignoring the internet connection and replacement subscriptions.

Advertising: FAST is free because you watch commercials
Every FAST service is ad-funded by design. You should expect commercial breaks in the linear stream, repeated spots and advertising that may be selected using audience data. A service can change its ad schedule, targeting and channel mix without changing the “free” label.
Amazon Ads claims that “FAST offers a better, more relevant ad experience than traditional TV thanks to superior ad targeting capabilities.” That is a vendor claim about targeting and relevance, not evidence that every FAST channel has fewer total commercial minutes than every cable channel.
What the latest viewing measurements show
Nielsen reported that ad-supported television represented 74.2% of overall TV viewing in the fourth quarter of 2025. Within that ad-supported viewing, streaming accounted for 45.6%, broadcast for 29.6% and cable for 24.8%.
Nielsen’s May 2025 analysis used a different measurement period and reported broadcast and cable together at 57.6% of ad-supported time, with streaming at 42.4%. Because the periods and releases differ, the percentages should not be combined into one trend line. They do show that advertising remains central to both traditional television and streaming.

For a household deciding between FAST and cable, the practical question is not simply whether ads exist. Ask how often breaks occur, whether the same commercials repeat, whether you can pause or restart a program, and whether targeted ads feel more useful or more intrusive. The available measurements do not establish a universal FAST-versus-cable ad-minute winner.
Channel lineups: size matters less than what you actually watch
Cable lineups are provider-defined bundles. They commonly include local broadcast affiliates, national cable networks, news, entertainment and sports, but the exact package and regional rights vary by market. A channel listed in a provider’s national marketing material may be unavailable at your address or limited to a higher tier.
FAST lineups are platform-specific internet channels. They often emphasize genre channels, news feeds, entertainment and library programming. Rights can change, channels can be renamed or removed, and a service may show different channels in different countries. The FCC cited a recent estimate of 1,189 FAST channels available over the internet in 2026. That is a market estimate, not a promise that one app carries all 1,189 channels or that all of them are relevant to you.
| What you want to watch | What cable usually offers | What FAST commonly offers | Decision check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local broadcast news and weather | Often included through retransmitted local stations, subject to market and package. | Not guaranteed; availability depends on the platform and local rights. | Search the exact station and ZIP-code availability before cancelling. |
| National news | Usually packaged in one or more tiers. | Often available as linear news channels, but the network and live feed can change. | Verify whether you need a live network feed or are satisfied with clips and rolling coverage. |
| Regional sports | May be included in a sports or regional tier where rights permit. | Not guaranteed; many regional and premium rights are absent or restricted. | Check the league, team, market and season schedule, not just the word “sports.” |
| National sports events | Availability depends on the networks and sports tier in your package. | Some events may stream free, but coverage is event- and rights-specific. | Confirm every event you care about and whether it is live or delayed. |
| Classic television and movies | Often spread across several cable networks. | A major FAST strength: always-on library and genre channels. | Compare the actual shows and films you watch, not total channel counts. |
| Channel surfing | Traditional guide with provider-defined channel numbers. | Electronic guide inside an app or device; channel numbering differs by platform. | Try the guide on your television before switching permanently. |
Local stations and sports are the biggest gaps
Do not assume that “live” means “local.” A FAST news channel may be a national feed, a digital newsroom stream or a loop of recorded segments rather than your city’s broadcast affiliate. Likewise, a channel labelled for sports may show analysis, highlights or older games instead of the regional team’s live rights.

Viewing experience: linear surfing versus on-demand control
Where FAST feels most like cable
FAST preserves the lean-back behavior of traditional television. You can open a guide, move through channels and watch whatever is scheduled without deciding among thousands of on-demand titles. This works well for background viewing, casual discovery and viewers who prefer a familiar channel rhythm.
Where FAST differs from a cable box
There is no universal FAST channel number system. Each smart-TV platform or app organizes channels differently, and the same service may look different on a television, phone or web browser. Playback depends on your home network, so congestion can cause buffering or a drop in picture quality. Searching for a specific program may take more steps than entering a channel number on a cable remote.

Where cable remains convenient
A cable package can put local stations, national networks and subscribed sports tiers into one guide and one bill. That convenience has a cost, and contracts, promotional expiration dates and cancellation terms vary by provider. Read the service agreement and the post-promotion price before treating a bundle as a long-term budget.

Hardware and internet requirements
You need a reliable internet connection and a compatible screen. FAST apps may run directly on a smart TV, in a web browser or on a mobile device. If your television lacks the required app or has an outdated operating system, a streaming player is the simplest gateway.
Amazon says Fire TV, Echo Show and Fire Tablet devices come with the Fire TV Channels app preloaded. Amazon also says Prime Video carries free ad-supported channels without requiring a Prime subscription. A Fire TV Stick can therefore provide a television interface without adding a paid Prime membership.
Roku is another documented route. The FCC describes Roku digital-media hardware as providing access to third-party services and The Roku Channel. App availability and channel catalogs can differ by device model and region, so check the exact model before buying.

- Confirm that your internet service is active at the television location and that the streaming device or smart TV supports the FAST apps you want.
- Connect the streaming player to an available HDMI port, connect its power adapter, and select that HDMI input on the TV.
- Complete the device’s network setup and install or open the relevant FAST channel apps from its official app store.
- Open each app’s live or channel-guide section. Some viewing is available without an account; create an account only when the app requires it for favorites, parental controls or synchronization.
- Search for your local stations, news feeds, teams and recurring programs. Record which items are missing before changing your cable service.
- Watch several channels during the times you normally watch television. This tests buffering, picture quality, guide usability and commercial repetition under real household conditions.
A practical decision framework
FAST is a strong fit when
- You mainly watch library entertainment, genre channels, general news or casual background television.
- You already pay for internet and own a compatible smart TV or streaming player.
- You accept commercial breaks and do not require a specific local station or regional sports package.
- You want to reduce a large cable bill without signing up for another programming subscription.
Cable is more defensible when
- Your household depends on local broadcast channels that are not available through your chosen FAST apps.
- Regional sports, live events or a particular national network are essential and unavailable through free channels.
- Several people need different channels at the same time and a single provider guide is worth the premium.
- You prefer one support contact and one bill, and the provider’s regular price fits your budget.
A hybrid arrangement can be rational
Some households keep internet, use FAST for free entertainment and add only the paid service that supplies a specific sport or program. Others retain cable during a sports season and reassess afterward. Calculate the total recurring cost in each season; a hybrid plan is cheaper only if the services you add do not recreate the cable bill.
Pitfalls that make a “free” switch disappointing
- Counting channels instead of useful channels: A large headline number says little if it lacks your local news, team or favorite network.
- Assuming all live sports are included: Sports rights are specific to leagues, teams, markets and events. Confirm each must-watch event.
- Ignoring the internet bill: FAST removes a television programming fee, not the cost of connectivity.
- Forgetting cable’s post-promotion price: Compare the regular bill, equipment and fees, not just an introductory offer.
- Expecting fewer commercials: FAST advertising is fundamental to the model, and available evidence does not prove a universal lower ad load.
- Buying hardware before checking compatibility: Verify the device model, operating-system support and regional app availability.
- Testing only one evening: News, sports and scheduled programs vary by time. Test the channels during your normal viewing hours.
Quick fixes when FAST playback is poor
- Restart the streaming device and home-network equipment, then reopen the app.
- Check whether the problem affects one app or every service; an app-specific failure may require updating or reinstalling that app.
- Move the streaming player or improve the network connection if the device is far from the router.
- Use the platform’s channel guide rather than assuming a missing program has been removed; schedules and channel names can change.
- If a local station or sport is absent, treat it as a rights limitation and reassess the service choice rather than buying another device.
What the market data says about the direction of television
Nielsen’s May 2025 analysis put broadcast and cable at 44.5% of total TV-set time and streaming at 43.8%, a near-even split for that measurement period. The figures describe viewing behavior, not household bills and not the share of homes that can cancel cable without replacing a particular channel.
The FCC’s 2026 marketplace data listed 35.3 million U.S. cable subscribers alongside its estimate of 1,189 FAST channels. Those are market indicators: cable remains a large distribution system while internet-delivered linear channels have multiplied. Neither number tells you whether a specific household will save money or receive the stations it values.
Use this checklist before cancelling cable
- Save a recent cable bill and mark the regular price, every fee, equipment charge and bundle discount.
- List the exact local stations, news networks, sports teams, leagues and shows your household watches live.
- Check those items on the FAST apps available for your TV, Fire TV device, Roku player or other supported hardware.
- Confirm that your internet plan remains active and that its standalone price will not increase after cable cancellation.
- Budget for hardware only if your current television cannot run the required apps.
- Test the guide, playback and ad experience at your normal viewing times.
- Read the cable provider’s cancellation, equipment-return and promotion terms, then compare the resulting annual totals.
FAST channels can cut the television portion of a household budget dramatically when free, ad-supported programming covers what you actually watch. Cable earns its higher price when its bundled local stations, live sports, network lineup and single-guide convenience are essential. The right choice is determined by those specific viewing requirements and your complete post-promotion bill, not by a raw channel count or the word “free.”
