There is no universal journalist reputation score established by the sources cited here, and no evidence that a score determines whether a journalist responds to a PR pitch. A media platform may provide journalist profiles or platform-specific targeting indicators that help a PR team decide whom to contact. That is separate from the journalist’s independent decision about whether a pitch is relevant and worth answering.
What does “journalist reputation score” mean?
The phrase can refer to several different things, and those meanings should not be mixed together. It might mean a journalist’s professional credibility, the completeness or verification status of a profile in a media database, or an internal ranking or targeting signal in a PR platform. These are not interchangeable measures.
The sources cited here do not establish a cross-industry definition, a standard scoring method, or a number that is comparable from one platform to another. They also do not show that journalists necessarily see such a score, or that it predicts whether a journalist will respond to a particular pitch. If a platform displays a numeric score or ranking, treat it as a feature of that platform unless its provider documents what the measure means and how it is calculated.

Muck Rack describes its journalist profiles as a maintained database for media research and outreach, and separately explains which profile categories it verifies. Profile verification is not the same as a universal reputation rating, and the stated criteria do not establish that verification predicts a journalist’s response behavior. In other words, a profile can help a PR professional research a contact without grading the journalist’s professional worth or guaranteeing that the contact is a fit for a particular story.

Can a score affect who gets a PR response?
A tool can influence the sender’s choices: a PR professional may use profiles, beat information, or a platform-specific targeting signal to build a contact list. That may affect who receives a pitch. It does not establish that the score controls the journalist’s inbox, obliges a reply, or causes a response.
Think of outreach as two separate decisions:
- Selection: The PR team researches journalists and chooses whom to contact. A database can help with that work.
- Response: The journalist decides whether the story fits their coverage, audience, timing, and needs. The reviewed sources do not show that a sender-side score overrides that decision.
A database can therefore be useful without being predictive. Its value depends on the quality and currency of the underlying profile information and on whether the PR team uses that information accurately. A ranking alone is not proof that the journalist is a good match for the specific story. The reviewed sources found no publicly attributed figure measuring whether a score itself changes an individual journalist’s likelihood of responding.
What do journalists report about PR pitches?
Survey results provide context for why a pitch may receive no reply, but they do not measure the causal effect of any reputation score. The figures below come from different vendor-published surveys in different years; they should not be combined as though they describe one population or prove a guaranteed response rate.

| Muck Rack’s 2024 survey recap reported that 49% of journalists said they seldom or never respond to PR pitches. | Nonresponse is common in the survey; it does not by itself show that a pitch was seen or that a sender used the wrong score. |
| Muck Rack’s 2024 recap reported that 73% said they reject pitches because they are not relevant to what they cover. | Relevance is a reported reason for rejection, so a contact who covers a different beat may be a poor target regardless of a profile rating. |
| Cision’s 2025 announcement reported that 86% of surveyed journalists would immediately reject a pitch that does not align with their beat or audience. That survey included 19 countries. | The result underlines the importance of matching the subject and audience to the journalist’s work; it is not a score-based response rule. |
| Muck Rack’s 2025 findings reported that 66% said a pitch should make its relevance to their beat clear, and 62% said interview access to relevant sources should be offered. | These are reported preferences, not a promise that including either element will earn a reply. |
| Cision’s 2025 announcement reported that 72% cited press releases as the most useful resource PR teams can offer. | This reflects respondents’ stated preferences in that survey, not a requirement that every pitch must be a press release. |
| Muck Rack’s 2026 report said 86% of journalists surveyed had at least some of their work begin with a PR pitch. The report described nearly 1,100 survey participants and separately said cleaned data had reliable responses from 897 journalists. | The report’s broader participant description and cleaned reliable-response count are distinct figures. This finding shows pitches can be a source of story leads; it does not imply that journalists respond to every pitch. |
The surveys point to a practical distinction: PR pitches can be useful to journalists, while irrelevant pitches are often rejected and responses are not guaranteed. A database score does not replace the work of checking what a journalist actually covers.
Advice quoted in Muck Rack’s 2024 recap also emphasizes the value of research and personalization. Parry Headrick, founder of Crackle PR, cautioned that reporters can recognize a cut-and-paste pitch and said that a mass message sent without taking time to tailor it is frustrating. That is practical advice, not evidence that personalization guarantees a response. Cision’s 2025 announcement similarly quoted its Chief Product Officer and Head of Strategy, Jim Daxner, saying the findings reinforce the importance of “precision, empathy, and adaptability.” Both comments support careful outreach; neither describes a reputation-score mechanism.
How should a PR team use a media database or targeting signal?
Use the platform to support research and list-building, then make the outreach decision based on the journalist’s current work and the story’s fit. A score or ranking should be treated as a starting clue only, particularly when the provider has not made its method clear.

- Check the profile against recent work. Read recent articles or broadcasts rather than relying only on a stored beat label. A journalist’s focus may shift, and a broad category may not tell you whether this particular story is relevant.
- Confirm the audience and angle. Ask what the intended readers, viewers, or listeners would gain from the story, and whether the journalist’s work serves that audience.
- Explain the fit near the beginning. State why the news or evidence belongs in that journalist’s coverage. Avoid assuming that a subject keyword alone makes the connection obvious.
- Offer useful material. Where relevant, make credible sources or interview access available. Muck Rack’s 2025 findings report that journalists value relevant interview access; Cision’s 2025 findings report press releases as a useful resource for many respondents.
- Check the tool’s methodology. If a platform presents a number, look for its definition, data sources, update practices, and limitations. If those are not documented, do not present the number as an objective measure of credibility or likely response.
This workflow uses a database for what it can establish—profile information and contact research—without treating a ranking as a substitute for editorial judgment. Research and personalization are sensible practices, but survey preferences cannot guarantee an answer. A useful check before sending is whether you can state, in one clear sentence, why this particular journalist’s recent coverage and audience make the story relevant.
What should you compare when choosing a journalist research tool?
Do not assume that similarly named ratings across providers measure the same thing. The available evidence here documents Muck Rack’s profiles and verification criteria, but it does not establish comparable score definitions across multiple providers. For a meaningful evaluation, examine documented functions rather than comparing unexplained numbers.
- Profile coverage: What information does the profile provide about a journalist’s beat, work, and contact details?
- Verification: Which profile categories does the provider say it verifies, and what does that verification mean? Verification of profile information should not be represented as a forecast of responsiveness.
- Currency: Does the provider explain how frequently profile information and contact details are maintained or updated?
- Story matching: Does the tool help identify journalists whose coverage aligns with a topic, and can the user inspect the basis for a match?
- Scoring transparency: If a rank or score appears, does the provider define it and explain its inputs and limitations?
If a vendor does not disclose a score’s definition, avoid treating it as a reputation measure. The absence of a documented method does not prove that no proprietary ranking exists; it means an outside reader cannot assume what that ranking signifies. The evidence reviewed supports examining profile coverage, verification, currency, story matching, and transparency, but it does not support a side-by-side comparison of vendors’ scoring systems.

Why a good pitch can still receive no response
A nonresponse does not, by itself, reveal the reason. The Muck Rack 2024 finding that 49% of surveyed journalists seldom or never respond to PR pitches illustrates that a lack of reply is not unusual in that survey. It does not establish whether any individual pitch was ignored, missed, mistimed, or judged unsuitable.
Likewise, the fact that a pitch fits a journalist’s beat improves the logic of targeting but cannot guarantee attention. The surveys describe reported preferences and behavior; they are not controlled tests of a particular score, message, or outreach method. A sender should avoid inferring a journalist’s credibility or attitude from a single unanswered email.

The cited sources support a limited conclusion: media databases can help PR teams research journalists and choose contacts, and journalists in vendor surveys report that relevance, beat alignment, and useful resources matter to their work. They do not establish a universal journalist reputation score, a common scoring scale shared across platforms, or a causal link between a score and the chance of receiving a PR response.

Accordingly, call a numeric indicator “platform-specific” unless the provider documents a broader standard. Use it as one research aid, verify the journalist’s recent work independently, and write a pitch whose relevance is clear. The journalist—not the number—makes the decision to reply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a journalist reputation score decide whether a journalist receives my pitch?
The sources reviewed do not establish that. A PR platform’s profile or targeting signal may influence whom the sender selects, but that is different from a journalist deciding whether to read or answer a pitch.
Is there a universal journalist reputation score?
No universal standard is established by the sources reviewed. If a platform displays a score or ranking, treat it as platform-specific and check whether the provider explains its definition and inputs.
Does Muck Rack verification mean a journalist is more likely to respond?
The cited information describes Muck Rack’s maintained profiles and verification criteria, but does not say that verification predicts response behavior. Profile verification should not be treated as a response forecast.
Why might a journalist not respond to a relevant pitch?
A lack of reply does not reveal the reason. Muck Rack’s 2024 survey recap reported that 49% of journalists seldom or never respond to PR pitches, but the figure cannot explain any individual nonresponse or guarantee a reply when a pitch is relevant.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The reviewed evidence does not establish a universal journalist reputation score or show that one determines who gets a PR response. Use a database or platform-specific indicator as a research aid, verify recent work and audience fit, and make the pitch’s relevance and useful sources clear. A well-targeted pitch may be more appropriate, but no score or practice guarantees a response.
