For a computer mounted beside machinery or exposed to an uncontrolled production area, start with a fanless industrial PC. Its sealed, passively cooled design can reduce dust ingestion and moving-part failures, but “fanless” alone does not guarantee resistance to water, vibration, heat, or electrical disturbances. The exact enclosure, thermal conditions, mounting and connectors determine whether a model is suitable.

A traditional desktop can work in a clean, climate-controlled office or protected control room. Using one directly on a factory floor requires an engineered enclosure, filtered airflow, thermal analysis, suitable storage and a maintenance plan; the desktop specification by itself is not a factory qualification.

What the two categories actually mean

Fanless industrial PC

A fanless industrial PC removes the cooling fan and transfers processor heat through a heat spreader, chassis or external heatsink. With no fan bearing and no fan inlet, there is less dust pulled through the computer and one fewer moving part to fail. Passive cooling still depends on heat reaching the chassis and then leaving it. A tightly enclosed cabinet, hot mounting surface or insufficient airflow can make a fanless unit overheat or throttle.

Industrial models are normally offered with mounting and I/O options intended for machines: DIN-rail, wall, panel or rack mounting; 24 VDC or other industrial power inputs; serial ports; isolated or multiple Ethernet ports; GPIO; and storage designed for continuous operation. Those features vary by model and are not implied by the word “industrial.”

Traditional PC

Here, “traditional PC” means a commercial desktop, workstation or small-form-factor computer designed primarily for offices. It generally uses one or more fans, standard AC power, consumer connectors and an operating range intended for a conditioned room. It may provide considerably more CPU, GPU, memory or expansion performance per dollar, and replacement parts are often easy to source.

A conventional computer can be a sound choice when it is physically separated from the process: for example, in an air-conditioned control room with clean air, stable power and easy service access. It becomes a systems-engineering project when placed near coolant mist, abrasive dust, washdown, welding, high vibration or large temperature swings.

Compare the decision factors before choosing a computer

Decision axis Why it matters on a factory floor What to verify in the exact datasheet and installation
Temperature and thermal design Cabinet and machine temperatures can exceed office conditions. Passive cooling still needs a heat path and an acceptable ambient. Full-load operating range; ambient versus internal temperature; required airflow; derating or throttling notes; peripheral temperature limits.
Dust, liquid and cleaning Fanless construction does not state how well the enclosure is sealed or whether it tolerates spray and detergents. Exact IP or NEMA claim, the surfaces covered by it, connector covers and cable glands, and the permitted cleaning method.
Vibration and shock Machine mounting can impose continuous vibration and start/stop shocks that a desk installation never sees. Test standard, acceleration level, axes, duration, operating versus storage condition, and the tested storage configuration.
Compute, I/O and expansion PLC gateways, data logging, machine vision and operator displays have very different loads and interfaces. CPU and GPU performance, memory and storage limits, Ethernet and serial ports, GPIO, expansion, displays and software compatibility.
Mounting, power and service Available space, DC power, access and replacement time affect uptime more than the purchase price alone. DIN-rail, wall, panel or rack hardware; input voltage and protection; service clearances; cable access; support and lifecycle terms.

Temperature: why a fanless label is not enough

Read the operating-temperature line together with its conditions. The Advantech ROCK-301 is specified by its manufacturer for operation from -40 to 71 °C and has an IP65 enclosure. Those are product claims for that configuration, not a general operating range for every fanless PC.

The Advantech ARK-1220F catalog illustrates the qualification issue more clearly. Its extended operating range of -30 to 60 °C is stated with extended-temperature peripherals and 0.7 m/s airflow. Install the same computer with a consumer SSD, a hotter memory module or in a stagnant cabinet and the headline range may no longer describe the complete system.

Check three temperatures separately:

  • Site ambient: the air around the computer, including the cabinet’s hottest seasonal condition.
  • Internal or case temperature: what the processor, storage and power circuitry actually experience.
  • Peripheral limits: memory, SSDs, displays, network modules and power supplies can have narrower ranges than the base computer.

Calculate heat inside an enclosure from every source, including the PC, DC converter, switches and drives. If the cabinet cannot reject that heat, add a properly rated heat exchanger, air conditioner or remote mounting location. Do not assume that removing a fan removes the need for airflow; it only changes how heat moves.

Dust, liquids and washdown: read the protection rating literally

IP ratings apply to the tested enclosure or surface, not to an entire product family. Advantech lists IP65 for the ROCK-301 enclosure. Its PPC-318W TGL panel-PC example lists IP66 for the front panel, along with a fanless design and a -10 to 50 °C operating range. The rear chassis, cable entries and exposed connectors may have different protection.

Before placing a computer in a washdown or dusty zone, confirm:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the rating covers the complete enclosure, only the front bezel or a closed-door cabinet.
  • How cables, USB ports, ventilation openings and unused connectors are sealed.
  • Whether the rating assumes a particular orientation or installed gasket.
  • Which detergents, pressure, water temperature and spray distance are permitted.
  • Whether the keyboard, mouse, display and external power supply have matching protection.

“Fanless” prevents a fan from drawing dust through an inlet; it does not make an unsealed chassis dust-tight or waterproof. If a commercial PC is used, a filtered industrial enclosure can provide protection, but the enclosure’s thermal performance and filter-maintenance burden then become part of the system.

Vibration and shock: match the test, not the marketing term

Industrial specifications may list vibration and shock values, but the details determine their usefulness. Verify the test standard, frequency range, acceleration, axis, duration and whether the test was performed while operating or only in storage. A rating tested with an SSD may not apply to a configuration with a spinning hard disk, add-in card or a heavy cable bundle.

Mounting matters as much as the computer. A rigid bracket attached to a vibrating motor can transmit more energy than a cabinet shelf. Use the manufacturer’s mounting hardware, maintain every specified fastener and torque requirement, and provide strain relief so cables do not lever connectors. If a machine generates repeated impacts, obtain the vibration spectrum or perform a site measurement rather than selecting by the word “rugged.”

Compute load and I/O: industrial does not mean underpowered

Start with the workload, then select the environmental package. A PLC communication gateway or historian may need modest CPU resources but several independent Ethernet ports and serial interfaces. Vision inspection may require a powerful CPU, GPU, fast storage and deterministic camera connections. An operator station may be better served by an industrial panel PC that integrates the display, touch interface and computer.

The ARK-1220F example includes serial, Ethernet, USB and GPIO and supports DIN-rail or wall mounting. That combination can simplify machine integration, but count the exact ports and electrical characteristics: two physically present Ethernet ports are not necessarily isolated, and a serial connector may require a specific signaling standard or cable.

For a panel application, the PPC-318W TGL demonstrates the integrated approach: a fanless computer with an operator display, a specified IP66 front panel, a -10 to 50 °C operating range and vibration protection. Treat the display surface, rear electronics and cable routing as separate installation questions.

Power, storage and serviceability

Factory equipment often uses DC power, while office PCs expect AC. Confirm input voltage, allowable tolerance, polarity, inrush current, overvoltage protection and grounding. Size the power supply for startup and worst-case load, not just the processor’s nominal wattage. Provide surge protection and an orderly shutdown strategy if the plant has frequent outages.

Solid-state storage is usually preferred where vibration is present, but an SSD is not automatically industrial-grade. Check its temperature range, endurance rating, power-loss behavior and replacement procedure. The ARK-1220F vibration and shock figures cited by its catalog are for a configuration with SSD; do not transfer those results to another drive type without evidence.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Service access is a lifecycle requirement. Record how the unit is removed, whether the cabinet door must be opened, how a failed SSD is imaged, and how long a replacement can remain unavailable. A fanless system may avoid filter and fan cleaning, while a sealed system can make any internal repair more specialized. Keep a tested spare or a documented image when production downtime is expensive.

When a traditional PC is the better choice

Choose a conventional PC when all of the following are true:

  • It will remain in a clean, temperature-controlled room or a properly engineered enclosure.
  • Its CPU, GPU, memory, expansion or software compatibility is materially better for the workload.
  • There is stable power, adequate cooling and straightforward physical access.
  • The organization accepts a planned replacement and maintenance process for fans, filters and storage.

A commercial computer near production should be treated as a component inside a protective system. Specify the enclosure, filtered airflow, heat rejection, cable glands, vibration isolation, storage and power protection as deliberately as the PC itself. Marposs describes the distinction this way in its company FAQ: “First of all, industrial computers are especially designed to withstand harsh shop-floor environments (extremes of temperature, dust, humidity, vibration, power surges) that commercial PCs are not designed for.” That is useful context, but it is a company explanation rather than an independent standards certification.

When a fanless industrial PC is the safer starting point

A fanless industrial model is the stronger default when the computer must sit at the machine, in an electrical cabinet or in an area with variable temperature and contamination. It is particularly attractive when:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dust ingestion or fan maintenance is difficult to control.
  • There is no convenient air-conditioned room or remote cabinet.
  • DIN-rail, wall or panel mounting saves space and shortens field wiring.
  • Serial, GPIO, multiple Ethernet ports or other machine interfaces are required.
  • Continuous operation and predictable maintenance matter more than maximum desktop expansion.

Still, select by the complete specification. A model with a wide temperature claim may require airflow; a model with an IP-rated front panel may have an unprotected rear; and an industrial CPU may not meet a vision or simulation workload. “Industrial” narrows the search but does not finish it.

Examples of how specifications change the answer

Example Published characteristics What the specification does—and does not—tell you
Advantech ROCK-301 Fanless system; IP65 enclosure; -40 to 71 °C operating range. Useful evidence of a sealed, wide-temperature design for this model. Confirm connectors, power supply, peripherals and installation before using it in a specific zone.
Advantech ARK-1220F Fanless embedded computer; DIN-rail or wall mounting; -30 to 60 °C with extended-temperature peripherals and 0.7 m/s airflow; operating vibration and shock data listed for an SSD configuration. Shows why airflow, peripheral selection and storage configuration belong in the qualification. The conditions are not universal fanless-PC ratings.
Advantech PPC-318W TGL Fanless industrial panel PC; IP66 front panel; -10 to 50 °C; vibration protection. Appropriate as an operator-interface example. IP66 is stated for the front panel, not automatically for the entire computer.
Siemens SIMATIC IPC PX-39A PRO Fully enclosed, IP65 protection; intended for machine-side use and factory/process automation. Illustrates a fully enclosed industrial format. Verify the exact market configuration, documentation revision and availability before procurement.

A practical selection procedure

  1. Map the installation zone. Record seasonal ambient temperatures, cabinet temperature, dust type, liquid or washdown exposure, humidity, vibration sources, available space and service access.
  2. Define the workload. List applications, operating system, CPU/GPU demand, memory, storage capacity and endurance, display resolution, network bandwidth, serial protocols and GPIO requirements.
  3. Set environmental pass/fail limits. Require an operating-temperature range that covers the measured site with margin. Specify the exact IP or NEMA surface, vibration and shock tests, power tolerance and grounding method.
  4. Model heat in the installed state. Include the PC, storage, memory, power converter and network equipment. Check any airflow requirement, including the ARK-1220F-style condition of 0.7 m/s when applicable.
  5. Choose the physical format. Select DIN-rail, wall, panel or rack mounting, then verify clearances, cable bend radius, connector orientation and access to removable parts.
  6. Validate the complete configuration. Confirm that the exact SSD, memory, display, power supply and expansion cards carry the required temperature and vibration ratings.
  7. Plan operation and recovery. Decide how images are backed up, how updates are scheduled, how a failed unit is replaced and how the system shuts down during a power interruption.
  8. Pilot at the real location. Run the intended workload through the hottest and noisiest operating conditions, inspect temperatures and logs, and verify every machine interface before standardizing the build.

Installation checklist for either type

  • Measure ambient and enclosure temperatures at representative production times, including startup and shutdown.
  • Keep heat-generating drives, power converters and network switches from blocking the computer’s heat path.
  • Use the specified mounting orientation and hardware; do not improvise a bracket that amplifies vibration.
  • Seal unused ports and cable entries with the manufacturer-approved covers or glands.
  • Route signal and power cables to limit electromagnetic interference and provide strain relief.
  • Connect protective earth and DC returns according to the equipment and plant standards.
  • Document the exact hardware revision, firmware, operating-system image and peripheral part numbers.
  • Set monitoring for CPU temperature, storage health, unexpected reboots and network errors where the platform supports it.
  • Keep a replacement unit or validated spare parts for components with long lead times.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“Fanless means dustproof and waterproof.”

Correction: obtain the enclosure’s actual IP or NEMA claim, identify which surface was tested and seal connectors independently.

“The advertised temperature is the temperature of my whole system.”

Correction: check the conditions, airflow and peripheral ratings. A computer may meet a range only with extended-temperature memory, storage and specified cabinet airflow.

“Any industrial PC will run our application.”

Correction: benchmark the real workload, including camera streams, databases, displays, virtualization and protocol stacks. Industrial ruggedness does not predict CPU or GPU performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A desktop is cheaper, so the decision is obvious.”

Correction: include the enclosure, cooling, filters, vibration isolation, power conditioning, maintenance labor and downtime exposure. A low purchase price can shift cost into engineering and service.

“An IP rating covers every opening.”

Correction: verify the installed orientation, front versus rear scope, cable glands and the condition of protective doors or caps during operation.

Bottom-line decision

Use a fanless industrial PC as the default for machine-side deployment, then prove that the exact model, peripherals and installation satisfy temperature, sealing, vibration, power, compute and service requirements. Use a traditional PC when it can remain in a controlled room or inside a genuinely engineered enclosure and when its performance or expansion advantages justify that system design. The winning choice is not the label on the box; it is the computer that remains within specification in the place where it will actually run.
