Short answer: the Power Fist is a separate, handheld unarmed melee weapon, while a Power Armor Fist is the punch produced by a power-armor suit’s own arm assembly. In both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, you cannot equip the handheld Power Fist while you are inside power armor. They are therefore alternative equipment systems, not two fist weapons whose damage stacks.

Power Fist and Power Armor Fist are different equipment systems

The similar names cause most of the confusion. A Power Fist occupies the role of a normal weapon: you find or obtain it, equip it in your weapon slot, and improve it with weapon-specific modifications. A power-armor fist is not an item you carry in that slot. It is the suit’s built-in unarmed attack, affected by the arms and bracers installed on the frame.

This distinction matters whenever you decide whether to wear power armor. A character fighting outside the suit can select a handheld Power Fist and build around fist-weapon perks. A character fighting inside the suit uses the suit’s punch and its arm modifications instead. Equipping one does not add the other’s damage, because the games do not permit the handheld weapon to be used from inside power armor.

What the handheld Power Fist is

Fallout 4

In Fallout 4, the Power Fist is classified as an unarmed weapon. Its listed base damage is 20, its attack speed is medium, and its weight is 4. Those are the weapon’s base values before character perks, bonuses, or modifications are considered.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The weapon has its own modification path:

  • Puncturing: increases damage and provides 30 percent armor penetration.
  • Heating coil: adds energy damage but does not provide armor penetration.

These modifications belong to the handheld weapon. They do not change the fists of a power-armor suit, and installing a power-armor bracer does not modify a Power Fist that is sitting in your inventory.

Fallout 76

Fallout 76 also treats the Power Fist as a melee, unarmed weapon. The weapon is available in level-scaled versions. The listed physical damage is 151 at level 30, 192 at level 40, and 245 at level 50. Those figures identify the weapon’s level variants; your final output can still change with perks, legendary effects, mutations, armor, and later balance updates.

As in Fallout 4, the handheld Power Fist cannot be equipped while you are wearing power armor. If you enter the suit, the game does not let you continue using that weapon through the armor’s hands.

What “Power Armor Fist” means

“Power Armor Fist” is best understood as a description of the suit’s own unarmed attack, not as a second copy of the handheld Power Fist. The frame supplies the arms, hands, strength, and attack animation. You improve that attack by changing the suit’s arm or bracer components.

Fallout 76 documentation from Bethesda specifically discusses power-armor bracers. Hydraulic Bracers are intended to show the correct unarmed damage, and Tesla Bracers display their added damage in the Pip-Boy statistics. These are armor modifications, not weapon mods for the inventory Power Fist.

The wording can vary between menus, guides, and player discussions. When a player says “power armor fists,” they usually mean the unarmed attack available while the character is wearing power armor, including any effects supplied by the suit’s arms or bracers.

Side-by-side comparison

Comparison point Handheld Power Fist Power Armor Fist
Equipment category Unarmed melee weapon Power-armor arm attack and bracer system
Where it is equipped As a normal weapon outside power armor Generated by the equipped power-armor suit
Usable while wearing power armor? No in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 Yes; it is the suit’s own attack
Upgrade path Weapon mods, including Puncturing and Heating coil in Fallout 4 Armor arm or bracer mods, such as Hydraulic Bracers and Tesla Bracers in Fallout 76
Damage reference Fallout 4: base damage 20. Fallout 76: 151 / 192 / 245 physical damage at levels 30 / 40 / 50 Depends on the suit, bracers, perks, character effects, and game version or patch
Typical build context Unarmed character who remains outside power armor Power-armor melee character using the suit’s punch
Can both be active at once? No weapon-damage stacking; the handheld item is not usable inside the suit The suit’s attack remains available while the suit is worn

Can you use a Power Fist in power armor?

No. In both games covered here, the handheld Power Fist is incompatible with power armor. The restriction is not a matter of insufficient strength, a missing perk, or an incorrect hotkey. It is an equipment-category rule: the suit already supplies its own hands and unarmed attack.

If the weapon appears unavailable after you enter a suit, that behavior is expected. Exit the armor to use the inventory Power Fist, or remain in the armor and select the suit’s unarmed attack. Removing the weapon from a favorites list or reopening the Pip-Boy will not bypass the restriction.

How power-armor fists are upgraded

Hydraulic Bracers

Hydraulic Bracers are a power-armor arm modification. Bethesda’s Fallout 76 notes call out their unarmed-damage display, which is useful because the Pip-Boy should report the suit’s resulting fist damage rather than silently showing an unrelated value. The bracer is installed on the armor, not on a handheld weapon.

Tesla Bracers

Tesla Bracers are another power-armor arm modification. Their added damage is intended to appear in the Pip-Boy statistics. If you are comparing a suit before and after installing Tesla Bracers, read the armor’s unarmed figures in the character interface; do not look for a separate Power Fist entry in your weapon inventory.

Handheld weapon modifications are separate

The Puncturing and Heating coil options in Fallout 4 illustrate the separation clearly. Puncturing’s armor penetration applies to the handheld Power Fist. Heating coil’s energy damage applies to that weapon. Neither effect automatically transfers to the fists generated by power armor, just as Hydraulic or Tesla Bracers do not modify the inventory weapon while you are outside the suit.

Why there is no universal “stronger” winner

Players often ask which does more damage: the Power Fist or power-armor fists. The games do not provide one cross-game number that answers that question. Several variables change the result:

  • Game: Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 use different progression and stat systems.
  • Level: the Fallout 76 Power Fist has separate level 30, 40, and 50 versions.
  • Mods: weapon modifications and power-armor bracers add different effects.
  • Perks and character effects: your build can increase unarmed or melee output independently of the item’s base stat.
  • Patch state: live-service balance changes can alter Fallout 76 values over time.

The reliable comparison is therefore conditional. Compare a particular Power Fist at a particular level and mod setup with a particular suit, arm configuration, perks, and patch version. A single number copied from one game should not be presented as the winner in both games.

Perks and build interaction

The distinction also appears in the perk system. Bethesda describes the Iron Fist perk as making fist weapons deal more damage based on the player’s damage resistance. That wording reinforces that fist-weapon builds are their own category rather than a synonym for every punch made in power armor.

When planning a character, decide first which equipment state you will use most often:

  • Unarmored or non-power-armor play: invest in the perks and weapon modifications that support the handheld Power Fist, then choose the weapon’s damage or armor-penetration option according to the enemies you face.
  • Power-armor play: plan around the suit’s unarmed attack and the arm or bracer mods available for that armor. Your damage readout should come from the suit configuration, not from a Power Fist carried in your inventory.
  • Mixed play: keep both approaches as separate loadouts. Equip the Power Fist when outside the suit and switch to the armor’s fists after entering it, rather than expecting one setup to enhance the other.

Fallout 4: choosing between the two approaches

Choose the handheld Power Fist when

  • You want a conventional unarmed weapon that can be modified at a weapon workbench.
  • You plan to fight outside power armor for most encounters.
  • You value the choice between Puncturing’s armor penetration and Heating coil’s energy damage.
  • You are building around fist-weapon perks such as Iron Fist rather than around the suit itself.

Choose power-armor fists when

  • You intend to remain in a power-armor frame during combat.
  • You want your punch to come from the suit’s arm assembly instead of a carried weapon.
  • Your build already depends on power-armor protection and you are willing to use the armor’s own modification path.

The Fallout 4 Power Fist’s listed base damage of 20 is not a direct benchmark against a suit fist. It is the starting value for one handheld weapon, while a suit attack is calculated through the armor and character systems.

Fallout 76: level scaling and live-service differences

Power Fist level variants

Power Fist version Listed physical damage What the number represents
Level 30 151 Base physical damage for the level-30 weapon variant
Level 40 192 Base physical damage for the level-40 weapon variant
Level 50 245 Base physical damage for the level-50 weapon variant

These values are the listed physical-damage figures for the respective versions, not guaranteed final combat damage for every character. Perks, legendary effects, mutations, armor, enemy resistance, and subsequent balance changes can all affect what you actually observe.

Power armor in Fallout 76

Inside power armor, you use the suit’s unarmed attack and its arm modifications. Hydraulic Bracers and Tesla Bracers belong to that armor system. Because Fallout 76 has received balance changes, a comparison made from an older guide may not match the current Pip-Boy display or a later patch’s behavior.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Pick your combat state: decide whether the character will normally fight in power armor or outside it.
  2. Identify the equipment category: outside the suit, inspect the handheld Power Fist as a weapon; inside the suit, inspect the armor’s unarmed attack and bracers.
  3. Check the game and level: use Fallout 4’s weapon values only for Fallout 4, and use the appropriate level-scaled Fallout 76 values for Fallout 76.
  4. Choose the correct upgrade bench or menu: apply Puncturing or Heating coil to the Fallout 4 weapon, and install Hydraulic or Tesla Bracers through the power-armor modification system.
  5. Read the resulting stats: in Fallout 76, verify the displayed unarmed damage after changing bracers. Do not infer the result from the handheld weapon’s inventory entry.
  6. Match perks to the equipment: use fist-weapon bonuses for the handheld route and power-armor or unarmed effects that apply to the suit route.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“Power” means the two weapons combine

The shared word is descriptive, not additive. The Power Fist is powered equipment held in the character’s hand; Power Armor Fist describes a fist attack made by a powered suit. Since the handheld weapon cannot be equipped in power armor, there is no combined damage calculation.

Comparing Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 numbers directly

Fallout 4’s listed Power Fist base damage is 20, whereas Fallout 76 lists 151, 192, and 245 physical damage for level 30, 40, and 50 versions. Those values belong to different games with different stat scales. Multiplying or ranking them as though they were measured on one scale produces a meaningless result.

Assuming a bracer is a weapon mod

Hydraulic and Tesla Bracers are installed on power armor. Puncturing and Heating coil are weapon modifications for the handheld Power Fist in Fallout 4. If a menu does not show the option you expect, check whether you are modifying the armor arm or the weapon itself.

Treating one damage display as permanent

Damage can be affected by level, perks, armor configuration, character effects, and patch state. Use the current game’s own statistics for the exact setup you are testing instead of carrying a value from another version or an older guide.

Terminology in guides and player discussions

Some references use “power armor fist,” “power armor fists,” or simply “the suit’s punch.” In this article, all of those phrases refer to the armor-generated attack unless the text explicitly says “Power Fist” as the handheld weapon. That vocabulary keeps the two upgrade paths separate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Power Fist: inventory weapon, unarmed category, weapon mods, unavailable inside power armor.
  • Power Armor Fist: suit-generated attack, armor arm or bracer mods, available while the suit is worn.

The Fallout 76 Vault Dweller’s Survival Guide captures the fantasy with the line, “Punch foes to death with a giant yellow fist. And that’s one of the more subtle blunt melee weapons.” The joke refers to the visual identity of the weapon and fist attacks; it does not change the equipment rules above.

Bottom line for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 players

Use the handheld Power Fist when you want an unarmed weapon outside power armor and its dedicated weapon modifications. Use power-armor fists when you plan to stay in the suit and want to improve the suit’s own punch through arm or bracer modifications. In neither game can you equip the handheld Power Fist inside power armor, and no single damage number can declare one option universally stronger across both games.
