Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix is a work-in-progress path-tracing overhaul, not a universally faster or fully compatible replacement for the original game. It can deliver physically based bounce light, reflections, shadows and custom volumetric clouds that the original renderer cannot produce. It also inherits the old game’s light placement, so some interiors look unnatural, and there is no controlled, same-hardware Fallout: New Vegas benchmark proving a universal frame-rate result. The original renderer remains the dependable baseline for established mod lists and the familiar New Vegas presentation.
What Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix actually changes
RTX Remix is a runtime that intercepts draw calls from compatible older games and can replace their rendering with path tracing, replacement materials and neural-rendering features. NVIDIA defines a game as compatible when “RTX Remix can intercept most of its drawing instructions,” while warning that compatibility “doesn’t guarantee a bug-free experience initially.” That distinction matters for New Vegas: the project can run, but compatibility with every renderer tweak, texture pack, script extender component or lighting mod is not implied.
The Fallout: New Vegas release replaces the original renderer with a path tracer and adds custom volumetric clouds. It is explicitly a work in progress, although its author says the base game should already be completable. The package does not include replacement assets, so you keep your existing texture and asset choices instead of receiving a mandatory visual overhaul.
The original game uses its established baked and stencil-style lighting. RTX Remix calculates light transport at runtime, allowing light to bounce from surfaces and appear in reflections and shadows. That is a change in rendering model, not simply a sharper texture pack or an upscaled resolution.

Does Fallout New Vegas RTX improve lighting?
Outdoor scenes
Outdoors are where the path tracer is easiest to appreciate. Sunlight can contribute indirect illumination, surfaces can reflect their surroundings, and shadow transitions can respond more naturally to the scene. The custom volumetric clouds add a separate atmospheric layer that the original renderer does not provide in the same way. These effects can make the Mojave feel less like a collection of baked lightmaps and more like a continuously lit environment.
The result is a reinterpretation rather than a guaranteed art-direction upgrade. New Vegas was authored around its original contrast, color grading and light probes. A physically based solution may reveal areas that were designed to look right only under the old renderer. Brightness, haze and shadow density can therefore differ from the familiar image even when your textures remain unchanged.
Interiors and misplaced lights
Interior scenes expose the largest known weakness. The release passes original light sources through by default, and some of those sources are positioned in the middle of rooms rather than where a believable fixture would be. Under the original renderer this placement can be masked by its simpler lighting model. Under path tracing, the light visibly radiates from the wrong location, making a room look “a bit off.” Correcting those placements requires a modder to edit the scene in the Remix toolkit; installing the release alone does not repair every interior.

Do not confuse the RTX path-tracing release with the separate FNV-DLSS5 configuration. FNV-DLSS5 intentionally disables Remix path tracing and presents the original New Vegas raster image to DLAA and Neural Rendering. It can improve edge quality and image reconstruction while preserving the original lighting model. Calling that package an RTX lighting remaster would be inaccurate.

Does RTX Remix increase FPS or reduce it?
For Fallout: New Vegas, there is no published, controlled benchmark comparing RTX Remix and the original renderer on the same hardware, resolution, settings and mod list. You should not use a single frame-rate claim as a universal expectation.

The project developer reported that performance “more than doubled” during development, but that statement describes progress between development builds rather than a comparison with the original game. A later individual report described up to 100 frames per second and usually around 70 on a mobile RTX 5080 using DLSS Performance at maximum settings. That is a personal setup report, not a laboratory result; a laptop’s power limit, resolution, thermal state, driver, scene and mod list can all change the outcome.
NVIDIA’s RTX Remix 1.0 release notes, dated March 13, 2025, provide context but not a New Vegas benchmark. NVIDIA reported that path-traced mods in its examples could reach “up to 8X performance over native” and that Neural Radiance Cache improved Half-Life 2 RTX performance by 15 percent. Those figures apply to NVIDIA’s stated examples, not to Fallout: New Vegas.

- Path-tracing workload: interior bounce-light complexity, reflective materials, cloud volume and the number of visible lights affect GPU time.
- Resolution and preset: a 1080p test at a performance preset is not comparable with a 4K maximum-quality run.
- Upscaling and reconstruction: DLSS, ray reconstruction and other neural-rendering options can reduce the cost or change image quality.
- Frame generation: generated frames can raise the displayed frame rate without reducing the latency of the rendered frames in the same proportion.
- CPU and mod load: New Vegas scripting, draw-call behavior and large mod lists can create limits unrelated to path-tracing throughput.
- GPU model and power limit: desktop and mobile versions of a GPU do not necessarily perform alike.
The original renderer is far easier to run and has a mature baseline, but that does not mean every modern system will show a fixed FPS number. CPU bottlenecks, engine behavior and mods still matter.
What GPU do I need for New Vegas RTX?
The release author states that the project is compatible with AMD RX 6000-series or newer cards, desktop Intel Arc GPUs and NVIDIA hardware. This is an author-provided compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every card will deliver a particular frame rate or that every feature behaves identically across vendors.

Before changing your installation, check that your card has current drivers, adequate VRAM for your chosen resolution and enough cooling capacity for sustained GPU load. These are practical prerequisites, not a published New Vegas minimum specification.

Is Fallout New Vegas RTX compatible with my mods?
Why DirectX 9 compatibility is conditional
RTX Remix replaces the DirectX 9 rendering path. NVIDIA notes that early DirectX 9 games may mix fixed-function and shader pipelines; in those cases, only the fixed-function portions may be enhanced. Its rule of thumb is that games from roughly 2000–2005 and DirectX 8 or early DirectX 9 fixed-function titles are more likely to work, while shader-heavy DirectX 9.0c games are less likely to work cleanly.

New Vegas is therefore a project-specific compatibility case, not proof that every New Vegas renderer modification will work through Remix. A mod that changes scripts, quests or meshes may be harmless, while one that injects its own shaders, post-processing or renderer DLL can conflict with the Remix runtime. The release being able to launch does not certify the entire load order.
Mod categories that deserve extra caution
- Alternative renderers and DLL injectors: They may compete with the runtime that intercepts DirectX 9 calls.
- Shader and post-processing packages: Their effects may be bypassed, duplicated or rendered incorrectly when the draw path changes.
- Lighting overhauls: They can compound the project’s inherited light positions, especially indoors.
- Texture and mesh replacements: The RTX release does not force replacement assets, but unusual materials or geometry can expose new reflection and shading behavior.
- Script and gameplay mods: These are conceptually separate from rendering, yet a large load order increases the number of variables when diagnosing a crash.
For a serious modded playthrough, keep a separate profile or installation. That lets you test the RTX configuration without sacrificing a known-good original setup.
How to install and test the two configurations
Preparing a reversible test
- Back up your working Fallout: New Vegas folder, save files and mod-manager profile.
- Record your current renderer, post-processing settings and load order so you can identify which change caused a problem.
- Start with a minimal profile containing the base game and the RTX project. Add rendering-related mods only after the unmodified project launches.
- Run the same short route in both configurations and note resolution, preset, upscaling mode, GPU model and whether frame generation is enabled. This is not a benchmark database, but it gives you a consistent personal comparison.
Testing the path-traced Fallout: New Vegas release
Use the files and launch procedure supplied with the specific release you downloaded; the project is still being developed, so package contents and runtime requirements can change. Confirm that the game starts before restoring a large mod list. Check an outdoor area, a dark interior and a scene with reflective surfaces. Those three situations reveal most of the project’s visual strengths and weaknesses: outdoor bounce light, misplaced interior emitters and reflection cost.
If the game fails before the menu, remove other renderer injectors first and retry with the minimal profile. If it reaches the menu but a particular room looks wrong, treat that as a scene-lighting limitation rather than evidence that every installation is broken.

Installing FNV-DLSS5 without path tracing
FNV-DLSS5 is a different configuration intended to keep the original raster image while applying DLAA and neural rendering:
- Extract the host component into your Fallout: New Vegas folder.
- Place the specified DLSS and neural-rendering files in the
.trexdirectory required by the package. - Launch the game with
PLAY-FNV-DLAA.bat. - Verify that the image still has the original renderer’s lighting. The README states: “This release intentionally disables Remix path tracing and presents the original New Vegas raster image to the DLAA and Neural Rendering path.”
Because this setup deliberately disables path tracing, it is the appropriate experiment when you want cleaner edges or neural reconstruction without changing the lighting model. Do not evaluate it as a substitute for the path-traced project’s bounce light and reflections.

The game launches, but lighting looks strange indoors
Inspect the light source itself before changing global exposure. The project passes original lights through, and a source located in the center of a room can produce an implausible glow under path tracing. You can either accept the scene as an unfinished area or use the Remix toolkit to correct the light placement if you are comfortable editing the project.
A familiar shader or post-process effect disappeared
That effect may have depended on the original DirectX 9 shader path. Disable the conflicting injector and test again. RTX Remix can intercept only the drawing instructions it recognizes, and NVIDIA’s fixed-function/shader distinction means that not every original rendering feature is automatically reproduced.

Confirm the resolution and upscaling mode first, then test with clouds, reconstruction and frame-generation features changed one at a time. Compare the same location after the GPU has reached a stable temperature. A report from a mobile RTX 5080 cannot predict your desktop, laptop or non-NVIDIA result.

The original installation worked, but the Remix build crashes
Restore the minimal profile and remove alternative renderers, DLL injectors and post-processing tools. Add mods back in small groups. Keep the original installation untouched so you can continue playing while isolating the conflict.
FNV-DLSS5 still shows the original lighting
That is expected. FNV-DLSS5 intentionally disables Remix path tracing; its purpose is DLAA and neural rendering of the original raster image, not path-traced illumination.
Which version should you choose?

What the comparison means in practice
Choose RTX Remix when you want New Vegas to look newly lit and you accept that the project is an evolving community effort. Expect the most convincing gains outdoors and in reflective scenes, but inspect interiors individually because inherited light placement can undermine realism. Treat every performance figure as hardware- and settings-dependent; neither the development claim nor the isolated mobile-GPU report is a controlled comparison with the original game.

Choose the original renderer when your priority is the known presentation, dependable compatibility and a mature modding baseline. Choose FNV-DLSS5 when you want a middle path: original lighting and assets with DLAA or neural image processing, explicitly without Remix path tracing.
