Short answer: NVIDIA lists “Any RTX GPU” as the minimum graphics requirement for RTX Remix, while its recommended configuration pairs a GeForce RTX 4070 with 12 GB of VRAM, a modern eight-core-class CPU, 32 GB of system memory, Windows 11 and 10 GB of NVMe storage. Those are RTX Remix platform guidelines, not a Fallout: New Vegas benchmark. An RTX 3060 therefore meets the stated minimum class, but no controlled, reproducible test establishes a guaranteed frame rate for it in this project.
Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix keeps the original game’s raster assets while routing rendering through the Remix bridge and runtime. Your result depends on resolution, path-tracing quality, replacement-asset density, neural image features, CPU-side mods and conflicts with other d3d9.dll renderers. Use the official 4070/12 GB tier as a sensible starting point, then tune settings against frame-time behavior rather than assuming a particular average FPS.
Official RTX Remix requirements versus New Vegas requirements
There are two different baselines to keep separate. Fallout: New Vegas was released as a DirectX 9 game with modest legacy hardware requirements. RTX Remix adds a new rendering path, so the original game’s minimum or recommended specifications do not describe the hardware needed for path tracing. NVIDIA’s RTX Remix technical requirements page, accessed in 2026, is the relevant starting point for the modded renderer.

|---|---|---|
| Graphics processor | “Any RTX GPU” minimum; GeForce RTX 4070 recommended | The minimum is a compatibility tier, not a promised frame rate. The 4070 is the named performance baseline. |
| Video memory | 12 GB in the recommended configuration | Remix scenes, replacement textures and ray-traced data can consume substantially more VRAM than the original game. |
| Processor | Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X recommended | CPU work from the game, bridge, asset streaming and other mods can affect frame times even when the GPU has headroom. |
| System memory | 32 GB recommended | Provides room for the game, Remix runtime and large replacement assets. |
| Operating system | Windows 11 recommended | Use a current 64-bit Windows installation with up-to-date chipset and graphics drivers. |
| Storage | 10 GB of NVMe SSD space recommended | This is the stated Remix allowance; a heavily modded installation can require additional space for the game and assets. |
The original New Vegas support page remains useful when checking the unmodified game’s legacy baseline, but that baseline should not be reused as a path-tracing recommendation. RTX Remix guidance is intentionally higher because it describes a different renderer and workload.

What RTX Remix changes in Fallout: New Vegas
RTX Remix is designed primarily for DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 titles that use fixed-function rendering pipelines. A compatible title is intercepted by a bridge and runtime placed alongside the game’s executable. The runtime translates the original draw calls into a modern rendering path, where Remix can add path-traced lighting and other features while the Fallout project preserves the original raster graphics and game logic.
Compatibility is not binary. NVIDIA notes that different rendering techniques can produce crashes or unexpected visual issues even in games that otherwise fit the supported API range. New Vegas mods that replace the renderer, inject post-processing or alter DirectX presentation can therefore change the outcome. Identify the exact Remix project and runtime build you are installing before troubleshooting; behavior can change between releases.
Can an RTX 3060 run New Vegas RTX Remix?
An RTX 3060 belongs to the “Any RTX GPU” class NVIDIA lists as the minimum for Remix, so it is not excluded by the platform requirement. That statement confirms a starting compatibility tier, not a target for a fixed resolution, quality preset or frame rate. No controlled New Vegas RTX Remix test in the available material establishes average FPS or 1% lows for an RTX 3060.
Use the card’s available VRAM and your target output as the practical decision points. The official recommended configuration specifies 12 GB, so a card with less memory has less room for high-resolution replacement textures, path-traced buffers and other assets. If you encounter stutter, texture eviction or sudden frame-time spikes, reduce texture or asset quality and path-tracing features before concluding that the GPU is incompatible. Keep a clean, reproducible configuration while testing; CPU-heavy gameplay mods can be the real limiter.

How much VRAM does the mod use?
There is no single published VRAM number for every Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix build. Usage changes with output resolution, texture replacement packs, geometry density, path-tracing settings, image-quality mode and the number of other mods loaded. NVIDIA’s 12 GB figure is a recommended system specification, not a statement that the runtime always allocates exactly 12 GB.
What consumes VRAM
- Replacement textures and higher-resolution material data.
- Path-traced acceleration structures, lighting data and render targets.
- Buffers required for denoising, ray reconstruction or other neural image features when enabled.
- Higher-resolution output surfaces, especially at 4K.
- Additional mod assets held in memory while the game streams a scene.
How to respond to memory pressure
- Return to a known-good scene and record the resolution and Remix settings you are using.
- Lower replacement-texture or asset quality first if the project exposes those controls.
- Reduce path-tracing quality or disable optional neural features one at a time.
- Retest the same save and location. If stutter disappears, re-enable settings individually until you find the limit.
- Do not treat a lower average FPS alone as proof of VRAM exhaustion; verify whether frame-time spikes, texture pop-in or driver warnings accompany it.
GPU tiers and sensible targets
The table below describes capacity and headroom, not measured FPS. It deliberately avoids invented benchmark numbers because no dated, reproducible New Vegas RTX Remix capture is available for these tiers.
| Hardware position | Resolution and settings approach | What you can conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Any RTX GPU (official minimum) | Begin at 1080p with conservative path-tracing and asset settings. Increase one variable at a time. | Meets the stated Remix GPU class. Smoothness, VRAM behavior and frame-time consistency remain unverified until tested on the exact card and build. |
| RTX hardware below the 4070 recommendation | Prioritize lower output resolution, moderate replacement assets and restrained path tracing. Watch for memory pressure. | May require compromises to maintain consistent frame times; there is no official New Vegas-specific FPS guarantee. |
| GeForce RTX 4070, 12 GB (official recommendation) | Use as the baseline for evaluating the project’s intended feature set, then tune for your monitor’s resolution. | Matches NVIDIA’s named recommended GPU and VRAM tier, but still is not a published Fallout benchmark. |
| Faster RTX hardware with more headroom | Useful for 1440p or 4K, denser replacement assets and higher path-tracing quality, subject to CPU and mod limits. | More headroom does not remove compatibility conflicts or guarantee a particular FPS without a controlled test. |
At 1440p, the GPU renders about 78 percent more pixels than at 1080p; at 4K, it renders four times as many. That workload increase is a reason to expect lower headroom at higher resolutions, but it is not a substitute for measurements from the specific build, driver and settings you use.
Settings that most affect performance
Output resolution
Set the display resolution first because it changes the number of pixels every path-traced effect must process. Establish a stable 1080p or 1440p profile before attempting 4K. If your monitor supports scaling, keep the game’s internal resolution and presentation mode documented so comparisons remain meaningful.

Path-tracing quality
Path tracing is the principal feature that separates the Remix workload from the original raster renderer. Higher quality can increase ray counts, denoising work and memory use. Start with the project’s default quality, then reduce it if frame times are inconsistent. Do not infer that a visual bug is a performance limit; crashes and missing effects can indicate an incompatibility instead.
Neural and image-quality features
Ray reconstruction and other neural options can alter both image quality and frame time. Test them separately from path-tracing changes. A feature that improves perceived detail may still add latency or require additional buffers, while a lower image-quality mode can provide more consistent delivery of frames on a constrained GPU.
Replacement assets
High-density textures and geometry can consume VRAM and increase streaming or CPU submission work. When diagnosing stutter, use the same asset pack and scene while changing only one quality control. Otherwise you cannot tell whether the renderer or an asset is responsible.

The recommended processor specification—Core i7-13700K or Ryzen 7 7700X—reflects more than the base game. Script-heavy gameplay mods, large worldspace changes and other injectors can add CPU work. If lowering resolution barely changes frame time, inspect CPU utilization and mod activity rather than continuing to lower GPU quality.

Installation and first-run checklist
RTX Remix runtime files are installed beside the game’s executable, and setup and performance controls are exposed through the in-game Remix interface. The exact file names and menu labels can vary by project release, so follow that release’s readme while using this sequence to keep the installation diagnosable.
- Start from a backed-up profile. Copy your saves and record the current mod list. A separate profile makes it possible to prove whether a crash is caused by Remix or an existing mod.
- Confirm the game version and API. New Vegas uses DirectX 9, which is within the class of titles Remix targets. Match the Remix project’s supported executable and runtime build.
- Install the bridge and runtime beside the executable. Do not scatter runtime files through unrelated mod directories. The files must be next to the game’s launcher or executable specified by the project.
- Temporarily remove competing renderers. Rename or disable other
d3d9.dllfiles, injectors and post-processing layers for the first launch. Keep a record of each change. - Launch a clean test. Enter the game without adding optional asset packs or gameplay overhauls. Confirm that the Remix interface appears and that a saved scene renders correctly.
- Set a conservative baseline. Choose your target resolution, default path-tracing quality and a moderate image-quality mode. Apply one change at a time and note frame-time behavior.
- Add mods incrementally. Re-enable texture packs, scripts and post-processing separately. The first change that reproduces a crash or visual defect identifies the likely conflict.
ENB, ReShade and other d3d9.dll conflicts
A current community release discussion reports incompatibility with other d3d9.dll renderers and tools, including ENB and ReShade. Treat that as a project-specific observation, not a universal rule for every future build. Verify the exact release notes before combining Remix with an injector.
Symptoms of a renderer conflict
- The game fails before reaching the menu after adding a post-processing tool.
- The Remix interface does not appear, or the game falls back to the original renderer.
- Black screens, missing lighting, corrupted effects or immediate crashes occur only when the extra DLL is present.
- Removing the extra DLL restores the last known-good configuration.
Recovery procedure
- Close the game and restore the backed-up executable directory.
- Leave only the Remix bridge and runtime files in place.
- Launch and verify the clean baseline.
- Check the specific release’s compatibility notes before testing ENB, ReShade or another
d3d9.dlllayer. - If a combination is supported, add it after the baseline works and keep a copy of the working file set.
How to measure your own performance
Because published, reproducible Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix benchmark data is not established, your own test should identify every variable that changes frame time.

- Fix the output resolution, image-quality mode, path-tracing quality, neural features and asset pack before comparing GPUs or settings.
- Capture an average frame rate and frame-time behavior over the same run. Note hitching, shader compilation, texture pop-in and crashes separately from the average.
- Change one setting, repeat the run and keep the result with the previous record. This reveals whether a limit is GPU, VRAM, CPU or compatibility-related.
Do not publish an FPS number as a general fact unless the test includes the build number, resolution, settings, driver, capture method and scene. A result from one heavily modded profile cannot be transferred reliably to another.

Choosing hardware for 1440p and 4K
1440p
1440p is a practical target for the official 4070/12 GB class, provided your replacement assets and path-tracing settings are not unusually dense. Treat that tier as a starting point, not a guarantee. If frame times fluctuate, lower path-tracing or asset quality before abandoning the resolution.
4K
4K multiplies the pixel workload and leaves less headroom for ray-traced effects, neural buffers and high-resolution assets. Faster RTX hardware can help, but CPU-side mods and runtime conflicts remain independent limits. A stable 1440p profile is a useful control case when diagnosing 4K performance.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate crash on launch | Unsupported rendering technique, wrong executable, or competing DLL | Verify the project build, use the supported executable and test with only Remix files beside it. |
| Black or corrupted lighting | Runtime incompatibility or an injector conflict | Disable other d3d9.dll layers, restore the clean baseline and check release-specific notes. |
| Stutter while moving through the world | VRAM pressure, asset streaming or CPU-side mod load | Lower asset quality, reduce path-tracing options, then test with a lighter mod profile. |
| Low GPU utilization with poor frame times | CPU or script bottleneck | Compare a clean profile and inspect whether resolution changes have little effect. |
| Performance collapses at 4K | Higher pixel and ray workload | Use 1440p as a control, then reduce path-tracing or image-quality settings before adding more mods. |
Bottom line for buying or upgrading
Use NVIDIA’s “Any RTX GPU” statement only to determine whether your card is in the supported minimum class. For a new build, the clearest evidence-backed target is the GeForce RTX 4070 with 12 GB of VRAM, paired with the recommended Core i7-13700K or Ryzen 7 7700X, 32 GB of RAM, Windows 11 and NVMe storage. An RTX 3060 can qualify as an RTX GPU, but its New Vegas Remix frame rate is not established by a controlled published test. Resolution, path-tracing quality, replacement assets, neural features, CPU mods and d3d9.dll conflicts determine whether the experience is smooth on your particular installation.
