For most new buyers, Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition is the simplest choice because it combines the single-player game with all six official add-ons. Choose a PC store based on your installer and mod requirements, and treat Xbox and PlayStation availability as platform- and region-specific rather than automatic. The guide below separates story expansions from item packs, shows how to trigger each DLC, and explains the limits of console modding.
Which Fallout: New Vegas edition should you buy?
There are two practical purchase decisions: the base game or the Ultimate Edition. The base game is Obsidian Entertainment’s single-player role-playing game published by Bethesda Softworks. The Ultimate Edition adds every official expansion and content pack listed by Bethesda and Xbox.

Prices, sales, subscriptions, and cloud entitlements change frequently, so compare the live listing for your country rather than relying on an old price. The edition name alone also does not tell you how DLC is delivered: on Xbox, disc ownership and digital ownership can require different installation steps.

What does Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition include?
Bethesda’s 15th Anniversary Bundle announcement and the Xbox Ultimate Edition listing identify six official add-ons. Four are story expansions; two are content packs.

Dead Money
This survival-focused story expansion introduces the Sierra Madre setting and its associated characters and challenges. Like the other three story expansions, it raises the level cap by five.
Honest Hearts
Honest Hearts sends the Courier into Zion and adds a separate storyline, locations, characters, equipment, and crafting opportunities. Its recipes are available from the beginning when you meet the relevant level and item requirements.
Old World Blues
Old World Blues is a science-fiction expansion set around Big Mountain. It adds its own quests, enemies, discoveries, and equipment, and increases the level cap by five.
Lonesome Road
Lonesome Road is the fourth story expansion and follows the Courier toward the Divide. It also increases the level cap by five.
Courier’s Stash
Courier’s Stash is a compilation of four pre-order bonus packages. It supplies its items at the start of the game rather than opening a separate storyline, and it does not raise the level cap.
Gun Runners’ Arsenal
Gun Runners’ Arsenal adds unique weapons, ammunition, weapon modifications, challenges, and the Mad Bomber perk. It does not have a separate story quest and does not raise the level cap.
Each of the four story expansions increases the cap by five; completing all four raises the maximum to level 50. The two content packs add gear and challenges without those level-cap increases.

If you purchase the Ultimate Edition on a store that includes the advertised package, you do not need separate purchases for the six add-ons. The base-game listing and Ultimate listing can appear as separate products, particularly on PC storefronts, so read the “included” section before checking out.
- Buying the base game first: you may later purchase individual add-ons or an upgrade package if your store offers one, but the exact upgrade path and price depend on the platform.
- Already owning some DLC: compare the cost of the remaining add-ons with the Ultimate Edition. Store licenses do not always combine in the same way across PC and console.
- Physical Xbox ownership: the Ultimate Edition can use a second disc to queue the add-ons on Xbox One, according to Bethesda’s installation guidance.
- Digital Xbox ownership: owned add-ons may need to be installed separately from the Xbox Marketplace instead of being automatically present after the base game downloads.
Do not assume that a subscription or cloud listing includes every add-on. Availability and entitlements can change by region, console generation, and account.

How do I start Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, or Lonesome Road?
The expansions do not require you to find a hidden entrance manually. After the relevant add-on is installed, its radio signal and quest appear in the Pip-Boy once you are in the Mojave. Follow the quest marker to the stated starting location.
Dead Money
- Enter the Mojave after installing the add-on.
- Open the Pip-Boy and look for the Sierra Madre Broadcast.
- Activate the broadcast-related Sierra Madre Grand Opening quest.
- Follow it to the Abandoned Brotherhood of Steel Bunker.
Honest Hearts
- Check the Pip-Boy for the Happy Trails Caravan signal.
- Accept the Happy Trails Expedition quest.
- Travel to the Northern Passage and meet Jed Masterson.
- Use the expansion’s crafting recipes once your level and item requirements are satisfied; the recipes are available from the start rather than unlocked by a later story event.
Old World Blues
- Find the Mysterious Broadcast in the Pip-Boy.
- Accept the Midnight Science Fiction Feature quest.
- Go to the Mojave Drive-In between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.
- Interact with the marked trigger to enter the expansion.
Lonesome Road
- Look for the Radio Signal and the The Reunion quest.
- Follow the objective to Canyon Wreckage.
- Enter the Divide when the quest allows it.
Save before beginning any expansion. The story areas are separate from the normal Mojave route, and a pre-entry save gives you a safe return point if you want to postpone the DLC or change your equipment.

Can I play Fallout: New Vegas on PC?
Steam and GOG both list PC editions. Steam labels the game single-player and moddable. GOG’s product information says Galaxy is optional and provides a fully offline installer, which is useful if you want to keep an installer independent of the Galaxy client.
Steam’s page still shows legacy minimum requirements for the original release. Those figures should not be treated as a guarantee on a modern computer: the game is old, drivers and operating systems have changed, and the Steam client itself supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. Check the current store page and your operating system before buying or troubleshooting.
Choosing a PC storefront

Neither store is automatically “better” for every mod list. The decisive issue is whether the exact executable and tool chain required by your mods are supported.
Is Steam or GOG better for New Vegas mods?
For a lightly modded game, either storefront can work if the mod documentation supports your installed version. GOG has the clearest advantage for offline ownership because its installer does not require Galaxy. Steam may be more convenient if your library, updates, and controller configuration already live there.
Before installing anything, make a clean game installation and read every mod’s requirements. In particular, check whether it requires the New Vegas Script Extender (NVSE, also called xNVSE), a specific game executable, a separate address-library package, or a particular load order.
Using Nexus Mods and Vortex
Nexus Mods hosts a large catalogue covering bug fixes, utilities, graphics, quests, gameplay changes, and total-conversion-style projects. Vortex is Nexus’s optional mod manager. Its Fallout support includes mod installation, profiles, and load-order tools.
- Install the game and launch it once without mods so configuration files are created.
- Choose a dedicated mod profile in Vortex if you plan to maintain more than one setup.
- Read each mod’s requirements, incompatibilities, installation notes, and required load order before enabling it.
- Install foundational utilities first, then visual or gameplay changes, following the author’s order.
- Deploy the profile and start the game through the method required by the tool or script extender.
- Add mods in small groups and keep a backup save. If a crash appears, disable the most recent group rather than removing everything at once.
NVSE storefront limitations
The NVSE project page lists the Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store, and Bethesda.net versions as unsupported. That warning applies to NVSE-dependent mods; it does not prove that every mod is unavailable on those storefronts. If a mod needs NVSE, select a PC edition whose executable and current NVSE documentation explicitly support it.

Do not copy an NVSE setup from one store to another without checking the executable version. A script extender, plugin, or address library built for a different release can cause launch failures, missing menus, or crashes.

Xbox has an Ultimate Edition listing, and Bethesda documents installation for Xbox One owners who have Xbox 360 physical or digital licenses. The specific console generation, account, disc, and store region matter. Newer Xbox consoles may rely on backward compatibility or a current digital listing, so verify the title in your account and marketplace before assuming that a disc or subscription will work.
Installing DLC from a physical Ultimate Edition
- Insert the game disc and install the base game.
- Insert disc 2, which Bethesda’s support instructions use to queue the add-ons.
- Open the console’s installation or manage-content screen and confirm that each owned add-on is queued.
- Launch the game and check the Pip-Boy radio signals to confirm that the content is active.
Installing DLC from a digital license
- Open your Xbox library or the Xbox Marketplace with the account that owns the game.
- Open the game’s manage-content screen.
- Locate each owned add-on and install it separately if it is not already selected.
- Restart the game and check for the expansion radio signals.
If an add-on is missing, confirm that you are signed into the purchasing account, that the console has synchronized the license, and that the DLC is listed as owned rather than merely advertised. Bethesda’s guidance covers Xbox 360 licenses and Xbox One installation; it does not establish every current subscription, cloud, or newer-console arrangement.
Can you mod Fallout: New Vegas on Xbox?
The PC mod ecosystem described above is not documented as an Xbox feature. Nexus Mods, Vortex, and NVSE are PC tools, and Bethesda’s Xbox installation guidance concerns official game content rather than user-created PC plugins. Unless your particular Xbox edition and a current official support page explicitly provide a mod system, plan to play the console release without PC mods.
That limitation is separate from DLC. You can have all six official add-ons installed on Xbox and still lack support for script extenders, external mod managers, or PC texture and gameplay plugins.

A current official PlayStation storefront or support page was not established for this title, so a blanket “yes” or “no” would be unreliable. Check the PlayStation Store in your country and Sony’s backward-compatibility information for your account and console model. Do not buy a PC or Xbox code expecting it to transfer to PlayStation, and do not assume that a subscription catalogue includes the Ultimate Edition or its DLC.
What is the 2026 15th Anniversary Bundle?
Bethesda announced a 15th Anniversary Bundle for PC that includes a PC digital code for the Ultimate Edition plus physical collectibles. It is a collector product, not evidence of a standard physical console edition. Inventory, regional shipping, and fulfillment can change, so verify those details on the current Bethesda announcement or store listing before treating it as an available purchase.
If your goal is simply to play the complete game, compare the ordinary Ultimate Edition listing for your platform. The anniversary bundle makes sense only if you specifically want its physical memorabilia and are comfortable with a PC digital code.
Common problems and fixes
The DLC does not appear in the game
- Confirm that the add-on is installed, not merely owned.
- On Xbox, check whether the physical release requires disc 2 or whether digital ownership requires separate Marketplace installation.
- Restart the game after installation and look for the relevant Pip-Boy signal.
- Verify that you are using the account that owns the license.
An expansion quest is missing
- Travel into the Mojave and allow the game to finish loading the installed content.
- Check the Pip-Boy’s radio and quest tabs rather than searching for an entrance on the map.
- For Old World Blues, visit the Mojave Drive-In between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.
- Disable conflicting mods temporarily if a modded installation suppresses scripts or quest records.
The modded game crashes at launch
- Check whether the mod requires NVSE/xNVSE and whether your storefront is one of the versions listed as unsupported.
- Confirm that every plugin matches your executable and that required libraries are installed.
- Use a clean profile, add mods in small groups, and inspect the author’s load-order instructions.
- Keep an unmodded backup so you can determine whether the problem is the game installation or a plugin.
The game runs poorly on a modern PC
The original minimum requirements are legacy figures, not a modern performance guarantee. Update the operating system and graphics drivers, disable overlays one at a time, and test a clean installation before adding visual mods. If the issue appears only after modding, return to the last known-good profile.
