Start with Far Harbor if you want the strongest story-and-exploration fit: it adds an island region, a detective case, faction conflict, settlements, creatures and gear. Choose Nuka-World for an amusement-park setting and raider gameplay, or Automatron for a shorter, focused quest line built around customizable robot companions. The three Workshop add-ons—Wasteland Workshop, Vault-Tec Workshop and Contraptions Workshop—make sense primarily for settlement builders. If you want everything, compare the Season Pass, Game of the Year Edition and Anniversary Edition against your platform, region and DLC you already own rather than assuming one bundle is always cheapest.
The short answer: which Fallout 4 DLC should you buy?
There is no publisher-issued quality ranking, playtime comparison or objective “best value” order for the six official add-ons. The practical choice depends on what you want to do in the Commonwealth and how much content you already own. Bethesda’s descriptions support a clear split between narrative expansions and workshop-focused add-ons.

Far Harbor: the best choice for a new story region
Far Harbor sends you to a large new island landmass off the coast of Maine. The official setup begins with a new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency: you search for a young woman and uncover a secret synth colony. The island’s central conflict involves synths, the Children of Atom and local townspeople, giving the expansion a faction-driven structure rather than a collection of unrelated encounters.

Beyond the investigation, Bethesda lists faction quests, settlements, creatures and new gear. That combination makes Far Harbor the broadest fit for players who want Fallout 4 to feel like a new journey: you get a distinct region to explore, a continuing mystery, choices involving several groups and additional systems to use outside the main quest.
- Buy it when: exploration, environmental storytelling and faction decisions matter more to you than settlement decoration.
- Skip it when: you only want workshop objects or robot construction and do not expect to spend time in a separate story region.
- Evidence-based limitation: official descriptions establish its setting and feature categories, not a guaranteed number of hours or an objective quality score.
Nuka-World: the amusement-park and raider expansion
Nuka-World is built around a raider-controlled amusement park. Its named areas include Safari Adventure, Dry Rock Gulch, Kiddie Kingdom and Galactic Zone, so the expansion’s identity comes from moving through strongly themed park sections rather than another ordinary settlement cluster.
The add-on also lets you lead raider gangs to conquer settlements. That is the key role-playing distinction: Nuka-World is for players who want to engage with raider factions and impose their control on the wider map, not simply collect another set of building pieces. Bethesda’s description includes quests and the large themed region, but it does not publish a comparative playtime figure.

Automatron introduces a Mechanist storyline involving hostile robots. Its signature system is the ability to use scavenged parts to build and modify robot companions, making it the clearest choice for players who enjoy tinkering with followers rather than managing a large new map.
The Epic listing recommends that characters be level 15 or higher. Treat that as the published entry guidance, not a universal technical requirement. The add-on is best understood as a focused quest arc with a companion-customization layer: it is smaller in scope than a new-region expansion, but more mechanically specific than a purely linear story pack.

- Buy it when: robot parts, custom companions and the Mechanist conflict are your main interests.
- Pair it with another DLC when: you want both a focused robot storyline and a substantial exploration region; Automatron does not replace Far Harbor or Nuka-World’s map-focused content.
- Plan around the level guidance: reaching level 15 or above before starting matches the listing’s recommendation and avoids beginning below the stated target.
Wasteland Workshop: capture, tame and stage creatures
Wasteland Workshop is a settlement add-on rather than a new narrative zone. It adds cages that can capture live creatures, along with taming and creature battles. Its construction additions include lighting, letter kits and taxidermy, giving builders more ways to decorate and create displays or controlled encounters.
The expansion’s value is proportional to how often you build. If you mostly follow quests and rarely return to settlements, cages and decorative pieces will not change your core experience as much as Far Harbor, Nuka-World or Automatron. If you treat settlements as a major activity, the capture-and-taming loop is its reason to buy.

- Buy it when: you want live-creature exhibits, taming, battles and extra settlement decoration.
- Do not expect: a new open-world region or a major standalone story campaign; the published feature description centers on workshop systems.
- Best value case: players who already spend substantial time designing and managing multiple settlements.
Vault-Tec Workshop: build and operate an underground Vault
Vault-Tec Workshop lets you construct and operate an underground Vault, attract dwellers and experiment on them. Its theme is narrower than a general settlement expansion: the appeal is creating a Vault-style facility and running it, not exploring a separate island or amusement park.
Choose it when the Vault setting itself is the draw. The add-on provides a purpose-built project for builders who want their settlement work to follow a coherent Vault concept. Players who are not interested in construction or management should prioritize a story expansion instead.
- Buy it when: you want Vault-themed building, a resident population and an operational underground project.
- Choose it over Wasteland Workshop when: a single, themed Vault project appeals more than creature capture and settlement decoration.
- Know its scope: the official description emphasizes construction, dwellers and experiments rather than a new explorable landmass.
Contraptions Workshop: included in the official six, but verify the mechanics
Contraptions Workshop is confirmed as one of Fallout 4’s six official add-ons in Bethesda’s catalog and an Xbox bundle listing. However, the product information available for this comparison does not provide enough detail to responsibly describe its individual systems.

That uncertainty matters when you are buying DLC one piece at a time. Do not rely on an assumed feature list or an old third-party summary; check the current store description for your platform. If you are purchasing a bundle that includes all six, Contraptions Workshop is already part of the package, so the question becomes whether the bundle is cheaper than buying only the content you are missing.

Season Pass
The Season Pass requires the base game and includes all six official add-ons. It is the straightforward comparison when you own Fallout 4 but none of the expansions. If you already own one or more DLC packs, compare the pass price with the cost of only the missing packs; the pass does not become automatically cheaper just because it contains more items.
Game of the Year Edition
Xbox describes the Game of the Year Edition as Fallout 4 plus all six official add-ons. This is aimed at readers who do not yet own the base game. If you already have Fallout 4, look for an upgrade or DLC bundle on your platform rather than buying a second base-game license without checking the price difference.
Anniversary Edition
Bethesda describes the Anniversary Edition as including the base game, all six official expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items in one bundle. Bethesda says this edition became available on November 10, 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, with Nintendo Switch 2 availability planned for 2026. Availability can change by platform and region, so confirm that the edition is offered for your system before relying on those details.
The Creation Club content is the meaningful difference from a bundle that contains only the base game and six add-ons. Decide whether those additional items matter to you, then compare the current Anniversary price with the GOTY or Season Pass path available on your platform.
A step-by-step buying decision
- Identify what you own. Write down whether you have the base game, any individual add-ons, a previous bundle or a platform entitlement. This prevents paying twice for content already attached to your account.
- Choose your activity. Select Far Harbor for a new island case and faction conflict, Nuka-World for the park and raider path, Automatron for robot construction, Wasteland Workshop for cages and creature systems, or Vault-Tec Workshop for an underground Vault project.
- Check the platform store. Use the store for your exact platform and region. Do not transfer a dollar or euro snapshot from another storefront into your own budget.
- Compare only the missing content. If you own the base game and two DLC packs, compare the Season Pass or bundle upgrade with the price of the four missing packs, not with the price of all six.
- Check bundle contents. Confirm whether the listing includes the base game, all six add-ons and, for Anniversary Edition, the Creation Club items. Product names can look similar while containing different entitlements.
- Verify current availability. Platform catalogs, regional pricing, discounts and planned releases can change. This is especially important for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, which Bethesda listed as planned for 2026 rather than as part of the November 10, 2025 launch platforms.

If you are new to Fallout 4
Start by comparing the GOTY Edition and Anniversary Edition with the price of the base game plus a Season Pass. GOTY includes the base game and all six add-ons; Anniversary includes those same core items plus more than 150 Creation Club items. The cheaper choice depends on the current store price and whether you value the extra Creation Club content.

If you own Fallout 4 but no DLC
Use the Season Pass as the baseline because it includes all six add-ons and requires the base game you already own. Then check whether your platform offers a bundle or upgrade at a lower price. If you only want one type of content, buying individually may be more efficient: Far Harbor for story exploration, Nuka-World for raider activity, or Automatron for robots.
If you own some DLC already
List the missing add-ons and compare the marginal cost. A bundle can still be useful, but only if its price is lower than buying the remaining content separately or if you deliberately want duplicate ownership on another account or platform. Store pages should show which entitlements are included before checkout.
If you mainly build settlements
Prioritize Wasteland Workshop for cages, taming, battles and decorative options, or Vault-Tec Workshop for a dedicated underground Vault. Far Harbor is the strongest first purchase because its published feature set combines a new landmass, an investigation, several factions, settlements, creatures and gear. Nuka-World is the alternative when the amusement-park setting and raider-led settlement conquest are more appealing. Automatron adds a focused story, but its defining feature is robot customization rather than a large new region.
Common buying mistakes
- Treating a storefront snapshot as a permanent price. The $34.99 Xbox US Season Pass listing and the €34.99 Epic euro-region listing are region-specific observations.
- Assuming every bundle is interchangeable. Season Pass, GOTY and Anniversary Edition contain different combinations of base-game ownership and Creation Club content.
- Buying a second base game. GOTY and Anniversary include Fallout 4 itself; owners should compare an upgrade or DLC-only route first.
