Choose Creations when you want a curated, in-game purchase that Bethesda says is compatible with Fallout 4 and its official add-ons. Choose community mods when breadth, experimentation, and free downloads matter more than uniform support. Since November 10, 2025, Fallout 4 presents both formerly separate Creation Club items and ordinary mods through one Creations menu, but they still differ in price, authorship, maintenance, platform support, and compatibility risk.
What the Creations menu contains
Fallout 4 now uses Creations as the single in-game storefront and library for three kinds of content: formerly branded Creation Club items, newly released Creations, and community mods that Bethesda distributes through Bethesda.net or the in-game menu. The unified menu changes how you find and install content; it does not make every item identical or available on every platform. Bethesda warns that availability can vary by region, title, and platform.

The practical distinction is authorship and commercial model. Creation Club content is selected and packaged by Bethesda and outside development partners. Ordinary mods are made by the community with Bethesda’s Creation Kit and can range from a tiny texture replacement to a total quest, settlement, or gameplay system. Some Creations are free, while paid items require Creation Credits.

How pricing and editions work
Free and paid Creations
Bethesda states that some Creations are free and others are purchasable with Creation Credits directly through the menu. There is no single price that applies to all paid items: cost depends on the item and platform, and the official material available for this comparison does not establish a complete live catalog. Treat any price shown in your own store as the current figure for your account and region rather than relying on an old list.

Community mods are usually the lower-cost route because a large portion can be downloaded without paying. Free does not mean risk-free: a free mod can still require a particular game version, another mod, or a specific load order, and a creator can discontinue support.
Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition
Bethesda’s Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition package includes the base game, all six official add-ons, and more than 150 pieces of Creation Club content. Bethesda lists the edition for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. The figure describes the package contents, not a promise that every future Creation will be added to it.
If you already own the standard edition, Bethesda offers an Anniversary Edition Upgrade. Owners of the Game of the Year edition can instead purchase the Creations Bundle separately. Check your library and edition before buying: purchasing an upgrade or bundle can duplicate content you already own, while an apparently cheaper individual item may not provide the six official add-ons included in Anniversary Edition.

Creation Credits and platform boundaries
Bethesda says Credits can be transferred among Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Starfield when they are used on the same Steam platform or the same Xbox platform. A separate Bethesda support statement says Credits are not transferable between platforms. For example, Credits associated with one platform ecosystem should not be assumed to appear in a game owned on another ecosystem. Make the platform decision before buying a large balance, and do not treat a shared game account as evidence that currencies cross storefronts.
Five free Bethesda-themed items
At the Anniversary Edition launch, Bethesda announced five items free to all Fallout 4 players: Morgan’s Space Suit, Doom Classic Marine Armor, Doom BFG, Quake Thunderbolt, and the Fantasy Hero Set. Their availability is a catalog entitlement tied to the launch announcement; it is separate from the price of paid Creations and does not make every other item free.
What community mods can do that a curated item may not
The Creation Kit is Bethesda’s free PC editor for building Fallout 4 content. Bethesda’s description covers quests, environments, dialogue, toolsets, weapons, armor, and perks, but the practical range is broader because creators can combine records, scripts, assets, and world edits. A mod can adjust one weapon’s damage, add a settlement system, rewrite dialogue, or introduce a multi-hour questline.

That breadth is the main reason to choose community work. You can often find several alternatives for the same goal, inspect changelogs and comments, and install only the pieces you need. The trade-off is uneven documentation and support. One author may publish requirements and compatibility notes; another may provide only a title and a download. Ratings and download counts are useful signals, not guarantees that a mod suits your save.

Compatibility: what the curation claim does and does not cover
Official add-ons
Bethesda’s original Creation Club description says curated content is compatible with the main game and official add-ons. That is a baseline claim about the package as delivered; it is not a guarantee that every combination of Creations and third-party mods will coexist. A curated armor item can be compatible by itself while conflicting with a settlement overhaul that edits the same records.
Game updates can break either category
Bethesda support warns that after a game update, installed Creations or mods may not work until their creator updates them. Curation therefore reduces uncertainty about the original package, but it does not remove version maintenance. Before updating a heavily modded installation, read the item’s status, back up saves, and allow time for script and plugin updates. A previously stable load order can fail when the executable, archives, or shared records change.
Load order and overlapping changes
Fallout 4 resolves many plugin records according to load order. Two files that edit the same weapon, cell, quest, or leveled list can overwrite one another even when each works alone. Script-heavy items can also interact without touching the same visible object. Install a new item in a test save first, follow the author’s load-order instructions, and avoid adding several large system overhauls at once. If a problem appears, remove the newest change before blaming an older file.
Platform and regional availability
The Creations menu is shared in appearance, not in catalog guarantees. Bethesda explicitly notes that availability varies by region, title, and platform. A PC listing may be absent on PlayStation, and a console release may contain fewer assets than its PC counterpart. Verify the platform badge, requirements, and available storage shown in your own menu before spending Credits.

Storage limits and the 2026 archive changes
Bethesda’s May 27, 2026 storage update gives these approximate or maximum Creation-space figures:

These figures are version-sensitive and describe Creation storage, not the free space on your internal drive. Leave additional drive space for the game, patches, temporary downloads, and save files. On consoles, delete unused items from the Creations management screen instead of assuming that uninstalling the game will preserve a clean catalog.
On August 18, 2026, Bethesda reported a patch that raised the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1,024 and updated Creation Kit archive and upload support. That change helps authors package larger releases; it does not enlarge every console’s storage allowance or make an oversized PC mod suitable for console installation.

Choose curated Creations when
- You want installation and purchasing to happen inside Fallout 4’s supported interface.
- You prefer a smaller catalog selected by Bethesda or a partner over searching through many independent releases.
- You need content described as compatible with the base game and official add-ons.
- You value a packaged Anniversary Edition that combines the base game, six add-ons, and more than 150 included Creation Club items.
Choose community mods when
- You want the widest selection of quests, mechanics, cosmetics, and quality-of-life changes.
- You are willing to read requirements, manage load order, and test changes on a separate save.
- You want to experiment without spending Creation Credits, accepting that support varies.
- You play on PC and want to author or customize content with the Creation Kit.
Use both, but separate their roles
A mixed library can work well when you treat curated items as a stable baseline and add a small number of clearly documented community mods. Keep a written load order, record the game version when you install each file, and avoid replacing a working setup immediately before a major update. The unified menu makes discovery easier; it does not remove the need for version and conflict management.
Installation and buying workflow
Before buying Anniversary Edition or a bundle
- Open your platform library and identify whether you own the standard, Game of the Year, or Anniversary Edition.
- List the six official add-ons and any Creation Club items already attached to your account.
- Compare that list with the Anniversary Edition Upgrade or Creations Bundle description.
- Confirm the platform and region, because Credits and catalogs do not transfer universally.
- Check available Creation storage before selecting a large collection.
Before installing a paid or free Creation
- Open the in-game Creations menu and read the item description, requirements, platform availability, and current Credit price if one applies.
- Confirm that the item supports your game edition and current version.
- Back up a save from before installation, especially for quests, settlements, scripts, or world edits.
- Install one substantial item at a time, launch the game, and test a disposable or dedicated save.
- Record the item’s version and position in your load order so you can reproduce or remove the setup.
Before installing a community mod
- Read the author’s requirements, compatibility notes, and load-order instructions on its Bethesda.net or in-game listing.
- Check whether it needs another mod, an official add-on, or a specific Fallout 4 version.
- Estimate its download size against your platform’s remaining Creation storage.
- Disable overlapping overhauls while testing, then add compatible files in small groups.
- Keep a clean test save; do not use a new scripted system on your only long-running character until it has proved stable.
Troubleshooting broken or missing content
A Creation or mod is missing from the menu
First verify that you are signed into the account that owns the item and that the item is offered for your region and platform. Check free storage and allow the download to finish. If the menu or item remains broken, Bethesda’s support guidance is to disable or remove Creations and external mods while troubleshooting a missing menu or failed installation, then add them back in small groups to identify the trigger.
The game crashes or a quest will not start
Disable the newest addition and test the same save. If the issue disappears, consult that creator’s compatibility notes and load-order instructions. For a script-heavy mod, a clean test save is more informative than repeatedly loading a save created after the script ran. Do not assume that a paid or curated item is immune to conflicts with a third-party overhaul.

An update caused a previously working setup to fail
Check whether each affected creator has published an update for the new game version. Bethesda warns that installed Creations and mods may need creator updates after a game patch. Until compatible versions exist, disable the affected files, use a pre-update backup where possible, and avoid saving over your main character while diagnosing the problem.

Storage appears full after deleting items
Review the Creations management screen for residual downloads and large archives, then restart the game so the catalog can refresh. On PlayStation 4, account for the download-size discrepancies and practical limits Bethesda reports; a file that appears to fit by its listed size may still fail within the console’s storage system.
Bottom line for a 2026 purchase
There is no universal winner. Creations are the convenient, curated, paid-or-free catalog, with an Anniversary Edition option for players who want the base game, all six official add-ons, and more than 150 included items in one package. Community mods are the value and variety choice, especially on PC, but they demand more attention to requirements, load order, updates, and backups. Decide first whether your priority is a supported package or maximum choice; then check your edition, platform, Credit balance, and storage before installing anything.
