Short answer: Falcon 9 is a medium-lift, two-stage orbital rocket whose first stage and fairing halves are reused, while its second stage is expendable. It is not meaningful to rank it against every other rocket using one payload number: capacity changes with the destination (LEO, GTO, MEO, HEO or Earth escape), the vehicle configuration and whether hardware is recovered. NASA lists Falcon Heavy at nearly 64 metric tons to orbit and New Glenn at 45 metric tons to LEO and more than 13 metric tons to GTO, but those are different vehicles and mission assumptions. The official sources available for this comparison do not provide a current, apples-to-apples launch price.
What Falcon 9 is—and why a simple payload ranking fails
Falcon 9 is a two-stage orbital launcher in the medium-lift class. SpaceX’s Falcon Payload User’s Guide, published May 9, 2025, describes the Falcon family as serving low Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), highly elliptical orbit (HEO), geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and Earth-escape trajectories. Those destinations require different energy. A payload figure for LEO therefore cannot be compared directly with a figure for GTO or a planetary-escape mission.
The same rocket can also fly with different recovery choices. Returning a first stage requires reserving propellant and performance margin; an expendable flight can devote more of the launch vehicle’s capability to the payload. Any serious comparison must state the destination orbit and whether the quoted capability assumes recovery or disposal of the booster.

Falcon 9 has two stages. The first stage is designed to return for reuse, and the payload fairing halves are also reused. The second stage is described in the cited Falcon documentation as expendable. That combination is different from both a fully expendable launcher and a fully reusable system: the lower stage and fairings can support later missions, but the upper stage is not recovered.

NASA’s Launch Services Program explains the economic logic in plain terms: “Reusability allows SpaceX to refly the most expensive parts of the rocket, which in turn drives down the cost of space access.” The statement appears on NASA’s Launch Services Program Rockets page and is a general explanation of the mechanism, not a published price guarantee.
Side-by-side comparison of the vehicles in the official sources
| Vehicle | Class or configuration | LEO capability stated in the sources | GTO capability stated in the sources | Reuse information | Status qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Falcon 9 | Medium-lift, two stages | Not stated as a single number in the cited sources; depends on trajectory and recovery profile | Not stated as a single number in the cited sources; mission-specific | First stage and fairing halves reused; second stage expendable | Operational vehicle; SpaceX-reported reflight statistics are dated company figures |
| Falcon Heavy | Three Falcon 9 cores | Nearly 64 metric tons to orbit (NASA figure; destination and mission profile should still be checked) | Not stated on the cited NASA page | Three cores are described by NASA as reusable | Operational heavy-lift configuration |
| New Glenn | Heavy-lift, two-stage vehicle | 45 metric tons | More than 13 metric tons | First stage designed for a minimum of 25 flights | “Designed for” is a design target, not a count of completed reflights |
| Electron | Small orbital launcher | Not stated on the cited NASA page | Not applicable as a stated comparison | First stage captured and reflown | Small-payload vehicle, not a direct Falcon 9 payload-class rival |
| Vulcan | Variants with zero, two, four or six solid boosters | No single universal number stated | No single universal number stated | Reuse specification not established on the cited page | Configuration must be specified before comparing capacity |
| Starship/Super Heavy | Two-part transportation system | Designed for Earth orbit and destinations beyond; no mature comparable number stated | No matched figure stated | NASA describes the system as fully reusable by design | Design intent should not be treated as mature operational performance |
The numerical entries come from NASA’s page last updated September 15, 2026. They are agency-presented specifications, not a matched set of missions flown under identical recovery and orbit conditions. Where the official sources do not state a number, “not stated” is more accurate than filling the cell with a figure from a different trajectory or an unverified estimate.
Falcon 9 capacity: read the destination before the number
LEO missions
LEO is the least demanding of the commonly discussed destinations in this comparison, but even “to LEO” is incomplete without altitude, inclination, payload separation requirements and recovery mode. A mission to a low-inclination orbit can have different performance from one to a high-inclination orbit. A rideshare mission may also use a dispenser or orbital-transfer stage that changes what “payload to orbit” means.

The Falcon guide identifies Falcon 9 as a medium-lift vehicle but does not provide one universal payload number that can be safely reused for every LEO mission. A customer evaluating a launch should use the mission-specific performance information for the required orbit and ask whether the quoted capability assumes first-stage recovery or an expendable profile.
GTO and other high-energy trajectories
GTO requires substantially more launch energy than a typical LEO insertion. A payload delivered to GTO may still need its own propulsion to reach geostationary orbit, and the required transfer orbit can vary. MEO, HEO and Earth-escape missions impose their own trajectory requirements. Falcon 9’s ability to serve those trajectories, as listed in the Falcon guide, does not mean its LEO performance can be carried over unchanged.

For a procurement comparison, record the target orbit, inclination, payload mass, separation conditions and recovery plan in one specification sheet. Only then can Falcon 9 be compared fairly with another vehicle’s quoted capability.
Falcon Heavy: more lift, but not “Falcon 9 capacity”
Falcon Heavy is a separate configuration built from three Falcon 9 cores. NASA says it can lift “nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lbs.)” to orbit. That figure belongs to Falcon Heavy, not to a single Falcon 9. The three-core arrangement changes thrust, staging and mission economics, so it should be treated as a heavy-lift option rather than a larger payload setting for Falcon 9.
NASA also describes the three cores as reusable. In practice, the relevant question for a particular mission is which cores are recovered and what trajectory is flown; the headline capability does not by itself describe the recovery profile. Falcon Heavy is therefore most useful when a payload or mission architecture needs heavy-lift performance, while Falcon 9 remains the more appropriate reference for medium-lift missions.
New Glenn: a heavy-lift comparison with explicit LEO and GTO figures
NASA lists New Glenn at 45 metric tons to LEO and more than 13 metric tons to GTO. Those two figures are valuable because they show, in one vehicle description, why destination matters: the GTO value is much lower than the LEO value because the transfer orbit demands more energy.
NASA says New Glenn’s first stage is designed for a minimum of 25 flights. “Designed for” describes an intended service life; it is not evidence that 25 flights have already been completed, nor does it establish the turnaround time, inspection burden or success rate for those flights. When comparing New Glenn with Falcon 9, keep demonstrated flight history separate from a design target.

New Glenn and Falcon 9 also occupy different lift classes. A New Glenn LEO specification should not be placed beside an unqualified Falcon 9 GTO estimate, and a Falcon 9 mission-specific value should not be generalized to every launch profile. The useful comparison is the customer’s required orbit, payload and acceptable recovery assumptions.
Electron: an important reuse example, not a direct payload rival
NASA identifies Electron as a small orbital rocket whose first stage is captured and reflown. The agency says this approach can support a higher launch frequency without expanding production and can lower launch costs. Electron demonstrates that reusability is not limited to large vehicles: a small launcher can reuse a first stage even though it serves a very different payload market.
Because the cited NASA description does not provide a comparable LEO payload number, Electron should not be ranked against Falcon 9 by lifting capacity. Its relevance is architectural and operational. A customer with a small spacecraft may value dedicated scheduling or a small-launch service, while a Falcon 9 customer may value substantially greater lift and rideshare access. Those are different purchasing decisions, not interchangeable performance claims.
Vulcan: configuration changes the answer
NASA lists Vulcan in zero-, two-, four- and six-solid-booster variants. Booster count affects thrust and payload performance, so “Vulcan capacity” without the variant is incomplete. The cited page does not provide one universal LEO or GTO number that applies across all four configurations.
For a fair table, name the exact Vulcan variant, target orbit and recovery or disposal assumptions. If a source supplies a capacity for one booster configuration, do not copy it into rows for the other configurations. This is the same discipline required when distinguishing Falcon 9 from Falcon Heavy.

Starship/Super Heavy: fully reusable by design, not a mature benchmark
NASA describes Starship/Super Heavy as a fully reusable transportation system designed for Earth orbit and destinations beyond, and notes its presence on NASA’s Launch Services II contract. “Designed for” signals the intended architecture. It does not establish a mature operational payload record, routine turnaround rate or a directly comparable price.
That distinction matters in a comparison with Falcon 9. Falcon 9’s reuse discussion can include company-reported reflights, while a design description for a newer system should remain a statement of intent until comparable operational data exist. A vehicle can be highly ambitious on paper and still require different risk, schedule and certification assumptions from an established launcher.
What the reuse record actually shows
SpaceX reports that, as of February 2025, Falcon first stages had been reflown more than 384 times. The company also reports a 100% success rate for those reflights. These are SpaceX’s dated figures, not an independent audit; the date and attribution should travel with the numbers whenever they are quoted.
SpaceX further reports that fairing halves had been reflown on 307 missions by February 2025, again with a company-stated 100% success rate. Fairings protect the payload during ascent and are separate hardware from the first stage. Counting fairing reflights and booster reflights as the same metric would obscure what has actually been reused.

Cost: why there is no responsible one-line winner
The official pages and guide used for this comparison do not publish a current, apples-to-apples price table for Falcon 9 and the other vehicles. A single “cost per launch” ranking would mix unlike figures unless every entry identified its source, date, geography, vehicle configuration, mission, orbit and commercial status.
| Price label | Why it can mislead | What must accompany it |
|---|---|---|
| List price | May exclude mission-specific services, integration, insurance or unusual trajectory requirements | Publisher, date, currency, region, configuration and inclusions |
| Rideshare price | Buys a portion of a shared launch rather than a dedicated mission | Payload mass, slot or dispenser terms, orbit and service scope |
| Government contract value | Can include development, options, infrastructure or multiple missions | Contract date, scope, number of launches and what the award covers |
| Cost per kilogram | Depends on payload size, orbit, recovery mode and whether fixed costs are allocated | Calculation method and the same mission assumptions for every vehicle |
NASA’s statement that reuse “drives down the cost of space access” explains why reuse is expected to matter, but it does not supply a current customer price or prove that one provider is cheapest for every mission. A lower quoted price can be irrelevant if the orbit, schedule, payload interface or reliability requirements do not match.
How to compare launchers for a real mission
- Define the destination. Write down LEO altitude and inclination, GTO requirements, MEO or HEO parameters, or the Earth-escape trajectory. Do not use “to orbit” as the only destination label.
- Specify the payload condition. Record mass, dimensions, center of gravity, separation mechanism, environmental limits and whether an orbital-transfer stage is included.
- Name the exact vehicle configuration. Distinguish Falcon 9 from Falcon Heavy, identify the Vulcan booster count and state the New Glenn or other configuration being quoted.
- State the recovery assumption. Ask whether the payload figure assumes a recovered first stage, an expendable flight or another recovery profile. Recovery can change available performance.
- Separate demonstrated performance from design intent. A flown reflight record, a planned minimum flight life and a fully reusable design description are different kinds of evidence.
- Normalize the price. Label each amount as a list price, rideshare price or contract value, then attach the date, currency, mission scope and included services.
- Check operational fit. Compare launch availability, payload processing, range and regulatory requirements in addition to lift. A larger rocket is not automatically the best choice for a small or schedule-sensitive spacecraft.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
- Mixing LEO and GTO: Put capacities for the same destination in the same column; otherwise mark the entries as not comparable.
- Calling Falcon Heavy a Falcon 9: Identify the three-core heavy-lift vehicle by name.
- Turning a design target into a flight record: Preserve wording such as “designed for a minimum of 25 flights” for New Glenn.
- Treating company statistics as audits: Attribute the Falcon reflight and fairing figures to SpaceX and retain the February 2025 date.
- Assuming every reusable vehicle has the same economics: Reuse hardware, inspection, refurbishment, recovery operations and launch cadence all affect cost; the cited sources do not provide a common numerical model.
- Using one payload number for every variant: Vulcan’s zero-, two-, four- and six-booster versions must be evaluated separately.
- Ranking a small launcher by heavy-lift criteria: Electron’s captured first stage is a reuse comparison, not evidence that it competes with Falcon 9 for the same payload class.
- Presenting a future system as operationally equivalent: Starship/Super Heavy’s fully reusable description is a design objective, not a substitute for mature performance data.
Which rocket is the better fit?
Choose Falcon 9 when
- Your mission fits a medium-lift launcher and you can specify the required orbit and recovery profile.
- You want a vehicle with an established, company-documented pattern of first-stage and fairing reuse.
- You are evaluating a launch service rather than the maximum lift of a heavy-lift system.
Consider Falcon Heavy when
- The mission requires the heavy-lift capability associated with three Falcon 9 cores.
- You need to analyze a payload or trajectory beyond the practical envelope of a single medium-lift core.
Consider New Glenn when
- Your analysis needs the LEO and GTO specifications NASA publishes for that vehicle.
- You are comfortable separating a first-stage flight-life design target from demonstrated reuse history.
Consider a smaller launcher such as Electron when
- The spacecraft is in the small-payload class and dedicated access or launch cadence matters more than maximum lift.
- You want to compare a captured-and-reflown first stage with larger reusable architectures.
Evaluate Vulcan or Starship/Super Heavy only with configuration and maturity stated
For Vulcan, name the solid-booster count. For Starship/Super Heavy, distinguish the fully reusable design objective from mature operational performance. In both cases, a generic vehicle label is not enough for a procurement decision.

Bottom line on capacity, cost and reusability
Falcon 9’s defining advantage is a reusable first stage and reusable fairing hardware within a medium-lift, two-stage architecture; its second stage remains expendable. Falcon Heavy extends that architecture to three cores and nearly 64 metric tons to orbit according to NASA. New Glenn offers NASA-listed figures for both LEO and GTO, with a first stage designed for at least 25 flights. Electron shows that first-stage reuse also works in the small-launch segment, while Vulcan and Starship/Super Heavy require careful separation of configuration and design intent from demonstrated results.
No current, comparable price ranking is established by the official sources cited here. The defensible comparison is mission-specific: match destination orbit, payload, configuration, recovery assumption, operational evidence and price definition before declaring a winner.
