A wallet backup is for restoring a wallet when you choose to recover it—not for responding to an unsolicited warning, support message, search result, or promised airdrop. For Trezor hardware wallets, enter the backup only when the Trezor device itself prompts you. An authentic-looking app or recovery screen is not proof that it is genuine.
What a fake wallet app can look like
“It looks exactly like the real one: same logo, same layout, same screens, often the same name in search results or an app store,” Lucien Bourdon, identified as a Bitcoin Analyst at Trezor, told U.Today in an interview published October 2, 2026. He also described malware that can display a fake page inside an otherwise genuine app. That means branding, familiar screens, and an app-store listing are not enough to establish authenticity.
The interview described several ways scammers try to get people to enter their wallet backup:

- A counterfeit recovery screen asks for the words before the owner has decided to restore a wallet.
- A fake airdrop page offers a reward in exchange for the backup.
- A sponsored search result or app-store listing leads to software imitating a known wallet.
- A printed letter bearing wallet-company branding uses a QR code to send the recipient to a counterfeit recovery page.
Bourdon said AI tools have made convincing copies quicker and cheaper to build, but the interview gave no quantified estimate of that effect. No prevalence rate or independently verified figure for AI’s contribution is established here.

When a wallet backup is legitimately needed
A seed phrase, recovery phrase, and wallet backup refer to the ordered words used to restore access to a wallet. Trezor says it now uses “wallet backup” for this information. A legitimate recovery is tied to an action you chose, such as restoring a wallet after a device is lost, damaged, or wiped; the backup is the information needed to recover it. Bourdon’s rule is direct: “Your seed phrase or wallet backup exists to get your wallet back, and only when you’re the one who went looking for it. Anything else asking for it is a scam, no matter how convincing it looks.” An urgent message does not turn an unsolicited request into a legitimate recovery.

Where to enter it: hardware and software wallets differ

Trezor’s stated guidance is: “Never enter your wallet backup anywhere unless prompted by your Trezor device.” That instruction is specific to Trezor hardware wallets, not a claim that every software wallet uses the same recovery process.

- Stop before entering words. Do not follow an embedded link, scan a QR code, call a number in the message, or use a recovery screen that appeared unexpectedly.
- Navigate independently. If the message claims to be from Trezor, type trezor.io yourself and find support from the official site. The interview advises avoiding links and phone numbers supplied by a suspicious message; Trezor says it will never ask for a wallet backup, including during customer support. This is Trezor’s guidance, not a universal statement about every wallet provider.
- Check the device, not just the screen. For Trezor recovery, proceed only when the Trezor device prompts you and trust the instructions shown on that device.
- Keep the words offline and private. Do not put them in screenshots, photos, email, or cloud storage. Paper or durable physical storage can reduce some loss risks, but cannot make the words safe if someone sees or steals them. See Trezor’s backup-card guidance.
What the reported incidents show—and what they do not
U.Today’s October 2, 2026 interview reported two losses attributed to fake wallet software. These figures are interview-reported and were not independently verified in the sources cited here.

These cases illustrate why a familiar name or polished interface is not a reliable check. They do not establish how common fake wallet apps are or provide a measured trend over time.
If you are checking or have lost a backup
Trezor’s troubleshooting guidance says checking a backup can confirm that the recorded words are correct, and recommends doing so before wiping or resetting a device and before firmware updates. Use the device’s official recovery or backup-check workflow; do not enter the words into an unverified utility or third-party form. See Trezor’s backup-check instructions.

- You can still access the wallet but have lost the backup: Trezor’s guidance is to move funds to a wallet with a known backup. Do so through the wallet’s legitimate workflow, not in response to an unsolicited recovery prompt.
- You cannot access the device and do not have the backup: With self-custody, access may not be recoverable. The cited guidance does not offer a bypass for a missing backup and inaccessible device.
Buying a device does not solve the fake-app problem
A hardware wallet’s device-based recovery process can clarify where its backup should be entered, but buying a device does not verify messages or protect a backup that has been disclosed. If purchasing a Trezor device, the company’s safety guidance recommends its shop, Amazon storefront, or authorized resellers and warns about unauthorized third parties; check current seller status directly through Trezor’s official site.
