Fake AI advertising portals used a “Connect” button to lure people into signing in, then showed a counterfeit browser window inside the phishing page. Island researchers, as reported by The Hacker News on October 6, 2026, said human operators could steer the sign-in flow and choose which authentication prompt appeared next. The key check is the address in your actual browser—not an address displayed inside a login window drawn on a webpage.
What was the fake AI ads phishing operation?
Island researchers Oleg Zaytsev and Ofek Ronen identified a human-operated phishing platform that posed as advertising products associated with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Meta Muse and Manus. The fake portals promoted services such as campaign optimization, spend audits, business-account connections and advertising briefs. Their “Connect” action led visitors into a counterfeit sign-in experience, according to The Hacker News’s October 6, 2026 report on the researchers’ findings.
The portals were lures, not legitimate ad-management features of those AI products. The reported sign-in flows imitated Google, Meta, TikTok and Okta. Island’s researchers also described the broader platform as supporting Google Ads refund or payment-confirmation lures and recruitment-themed sites impersonating other organizations.

How did the browser-in-the-browser trick work?
After a visitor clicked “Connect,” the page could display a browser-style window as part of the webpage itself. It imitated browser controls and showed a trusted-looking address, such as a Google account sign-in address or an Okta tenant. But that inner address was only page content. The real browser remained on the phishing site.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
That distinction is the core of browser-in-the-browser (BitB) deception: the fake window may look like a separate browser or single sign-on prompt, but it does not establish that the sign-in page is hosted by the service named in its imitation address bar. The phishing page, shown in the outer browser’s actual address bar, is the origin that matters.
In a separate technical analysis published June 24, 2026, Mimecast described BitB pages that imitate browser chrome and may show a loading screen or filter visitors before displaying the counterfeit window. That analysis concerns a different campaign; it is general context for the technique, not a teardown of the AI-ad phishing platform reported by Island.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
What could the human operators control?
Island’s inspection of the platform found that an operator could observe and steer parts of the authentication flow. Reported controls included:
- Requesting another password attempt.
- Choosing whether to present an SMS, authenticator, Google or Okta prompt.
- Rejecting a submitted code and asking for another.
- Keeping a visitor waiting or ending the session.
The platform reportedly fingerprinted devices and passed data and operator commands over Socket.IO. In practice, this kind of live control can make a fake login feel like an ordinary authentication process: an operator can react when a password or one-time code is submitted and move the visitor to another prompt. It does not mean every targeted person entered credentials, completed MFA or lost an account. The report establishes capabilities observed in the platform, not confirmed outcomes for every visitor.

Who was likely being targeted, and why?
Island assessed that likely targets included agency staff, media buyers and administrators of advertising manager accounts. Access to those accounts could have economic value if resold or used in attackers’ campaigns, but the target and motive descriptions are researcher assessments, not confirmation of what happened in every case.
The Hacker News also cited a broader delivery cluster with about 850 paid-ad landings, 26 lookalike ChatGPT destinations and 71 Google Ads campaign IDs during a three-month observation period ending in August 2026. These are cluster figures, not a count of victims of the fake AI-ad phishing platform.

How can you spot a fake browser window?
Do not use an address painted inside a login window to decide which site is asking for your credentials. Check the outer browser’s real address bar before signing in, and stop if it shows an unexpected or unrelated domain. Mimecast’s general BitB guidance also flags purported single sign-on windows that can be moved or have page-like window controls as suspicious.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the relevant service through a known bookmark or by typing its address yourself rather than following an unexpected “Connect” prompt.
- Before entering a password or code, inspect the address in the actual browser chrome, outside the sign-in window. A trusted-looking inner address is not proof of origin.
- Be cautious when an unfamiliar AI tool asks to connect a business, advertising or manager account. Verify the tool and the requested access through a channel independent of the page.
- If you have already submitted a password or MFA code to a page whose real origin you could not verify, use the service’s official account-security process to change the password, revoke unfamiliar sessions or integrations, and contact your organization’s account administrator.
Which defenses help protect advertising accounts?
Use multiple controls: origin checks help catch the visual trick, stronger authentication makes credential phishing harder, and account governance can limit the damage if an account is exposed. Google’s June 2026 advisory discusses phishing-resistant authentication and separately notes threats such as session-cookie theft; a stronger sign-in method does not cover every post-login or account-recovery risk.

| Control | What it helps with | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Check the real browser origin | Helps distinguish the phishing page from a genuine sign-in site when a fake window displays an inner address. | It depends on the person noticing and checking the outer address; it does not prevent every form of account compromise. |
| Password plus SMS, authenticator or push prompts | Can add a second step beyond a password. | The reported operators could steer prompts and request or reject codes, so a real-time phishing flow may try to capture or relay them. |
| Phishing-resistant FIDO2/WebAuthn authentication | Uses credentials scoped to the legitimate service, reducing exposure to lookalike sign-in pages. | Check that the service supports the method. It does not by itself prevent session theft or secure account recovery. |
| Advertising-account governance | Reviewing administrators, access changes and connected integrations can help identify unauthorized access or changes. | It is a monitoring and response measure, not a substitute for secure sign-in. |
A FIDO2 security key is one way to implement phishing-resistant MFA where the service supports it. Confirm service and device compatibility, and set up a backup credential so that losing a key does not lock out the account.
What should an agency or account administrator do?
For accounts that manage advertising for multiple businesses, make access review part of routine security work rather than waiting for a suspected incident. Island’s campaign-specific recommendations include using phishing-resistant authentication where supported and reviewing advertising-account control changes. Practical checks include:
- Review who has administrator or manager access and remove accounts that no longer need it.
- Investigate unexpected changes to administrators, connected tools or account permissions.
- Ask staff to verify new account-connection requests with the account owner or administrator before authorizing them.
- Use the service’s official security and recovery channels if credentials or one-time codes may have been disclosed.
The reported technique is social engineering through a deceptive webpage, not evidence of a browser software vulnerability. Island’s reporting does not establish a specific victim count, confirmed account takeovers or malware infections from this operation.
