Short answer: Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is designed for owner repair. Fairphone says 12 parts are user-replaceable, the phone opens with a T5 Torx screwdriver, and its software roadmap starts at Android 16 with at least six Android version upgrades and security support through June 2033. The company also reports app loading and switching up to 24% faster than on the earlier Gen. 6, but that figure is a vendor comparison rather than an independent benchmark.

This guide explains what you can replace, how to source parts, what repair and warranty terms mean in practice, how long updates are promised, and what the available performance evidence can—and cannot—tell you.

What the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is, and how it differs from Gen. 6

The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is the Plus model launched with Android 16 in 2026. It is not the same phone as the 2025 Fairphone (Gen. 6). The Plus version uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of storage, while the earlier Gen. 6 uses Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. Fairphone lists the two models separately in its release notes, so the older model’s update promises should not be applied to the Plus.

The practical reason to consider the Plus is long-term ownership: a replaceable battery and other modules can postpone a complete phone replacement, while the stated software horizon extends into 2033. Those benefits depend on your country’s parts stock, warranty terms, network compatibility and the price you actually pay.

Which parts can you replace yourself?

Fairphone says the Gen. 6+ has 12 user-replaceable parts. Its product material names the following modules. The catalog also shows one additional replaceable module whose name is not stated in the available product description.

These are example European prices from Fairphone’s product page, not a worldwide price list. Shipping, taxes, currency conversion and regional stock can change the amount you pay. Fairphone’s own comparison with other flagship phones was based on estimates from three manufacturers’ official EU repair quotes collected July 28–31, 2025; it is not an independent market-wide survey.

How to source parts and check availability

Use the regional Fairphone catalog

Start with the official Gen. 6+ product page and select your country before choosing a module. A listing proves that Fairphone offers that part, but it does not guarantee live inventory, immediate dispatch or availability in every market. Check the part number and model compatibility immediately before ordering.

Understand the US stock snapshot

When checked on October 12, 2026, Fairphone’s US store listed the handset at $649.99 and marked it out of stock with a notify-me option. The same page showed the case, screen protector, finger loop, card holder and lanyard as out of stock at that time. This is a dated US snapshot, not a statement about worldwide supply. Use the live regional store for current stock and delivery information.

Do you need to buy a screwdriver?

Fairphone says the phone opens with a T5 Torx screwdriver. The US store states that the T5 tool is included with the handset, so it should not be an assumed extra purchase for that listing. Inclusion can vary by region or bundle; if you are replacing a lost tool, buy a correctly sized T5 Torx driver and verify that it fits the phone’s screws.

DIY repair: a safe process

Modularity makes a repair accessible, but it does not remove the need for care. Use this workflow for a battery, display, camera or port replacement:

  1. Confirm the fault. Test software settings, another cable or accessory, and—where practical—an alternative component before ordering. A replacement part will not fix a motherboard, liquid-damage or account problem.
  2. Back up your data. Copy photos and important files, confirm that you know your screen lock and account credentials, and record any two-factor authentication recovery codes.
  3. Power down completely. Disconnect the charger and remove external accessories. Work on a clean, well-lit, static-safe surface.
  4. Use the correct tool. Fairphone identifies a T5 Torx screwdriver for opening the device. Keep screws organized and use gentle, even pressure rather than forcing a cover or connector.
  5. Replace only the intended module. Match the replacement label and connector to the original. Do not bend cables, pry against the battery or pull a connector by its wire.
  6. Reassemble and test before disposal. Check charging, audio, cameras, cellular connection, buttons and biometric functions before closing up permanently or discarding the old part. Recycle the removed battery through an appropriate local program.

For detailed disassembly order, diagrams and model-specific warnings, follow Fairphone’s current repair documentation for the Gen. 6+. The product page’s “12 replaceable parts” claim does not mean every repair is risk-free or that water resistance, fit or warranty status is unchanged after an incorrect installation.

Warranty and third-party repairs

Fairphone advertises a five-year warranty for the Gen. 6 family. Read the warranty terms for your sales region because exclusions, proof-of-purchase rules, shipping arrangements and treatment of accidental damage can differ. Fairphone’s Gen. 6 overview also says that warranty support requires returning the device to stock Android when an alternative operating system is installed. Do not assume that wording is identical in every Gen. 6+ market; confirm it in the current regional terms before unlocking the bootloader or sending a modified phone for service.

A self-replaced module is different from damage caused by forcing a connector, using an incompatible part or allowing liquid into the phone. Photograph the device before opening it, retain invoices and keep the original component until the repair is confirmed. If a fault may be covered, contact support before attempting a DIY repair so you do not complicate a warranty claim.

How long will the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) get updates?

Fairphone’s release-notes roadmap says the Gen. 6+ launched on Android 16 with:

Rank #3
Fairphone Fairbuds True Wireless Earbuds with Active Noise Canceling, Ambient Mode, Titanium-Coated Drivers, 26H Battery, ENC Mics, Multipoint Bluetooth, iOS & Android App, Replaceable Parts, White
  • Titanium-coated dynamic drivers: Enjoy a rich, perfectly balanced sound profile with titanium-coated 11mm dynamic drivers. Powerful highs, warm mids, and deep lows complement each other for pure sound that is natural and true-to-life. Zero distortion, zero crackling. Experience sound the way it was created.
  • Active Noise Canceling: Going for a run, but want to keep an ear out for traffic? Switch on ambient mode. Looking for deep focus time with absolutely zero distractions. Switch to active mode. The Fairbuds unlocks a fully immersive sonic experience on demand. And, when out in the real world, its advanced wind reduction makes sure the listening experience is never compromised.
  • 26 hours of battery runtime: The Fairbuds are geared for an uninterrupted listening experience, be it at work or on the go. Get up to six hours of listening on a single charge. And when it's time, pop them in the charging case for a quick boost. The Fairbuds charges up fast, with 1.5 of listening in just ten minutes. The charging case can fully charge the Fairbuds up to three times more, before it needs to be juiced up. Now that's fair.
  • Crystal-clear calling: The Fairbuds come with Environmental Noise Canceling (ENC). That means all calls and voice recordings on the Fairbuds always sound as clear as day, no matter the surroundings. It gets the job done with the help of six onboard mics that can intelligently pick up vocal patterns while cutting out background noise.
  • Seamless dual point connectivity: Multipoint connectivity is a no-brainer with the Fairbuds. It can connect to two devices at the same time, while switching between them is a just a button tap away. That means staying connected to a laptop and a smartphone at the same time is easy, and moving from one to the other is seamless.
  • At least six Android version upgrades.
  • At least seven years of security updates.
  • Planned support through June 2033.
  • Monthly security updates for roughly the first two years, followed by bi-monthly updates from June 2028 until the end of the stated support period.

This is a company commitment horizon, not proof that a particular future Android release has already shipped. Update timing can also vary by carrier certification, country and unresolved bugs.

Is the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) fast enough for everyday use?

Storage 256GB
Operating system at launch Android 16

That configuration is aimed at normal phone workloads: messaging, web browsing, navigation, photography, streaming, office apps and switching among several open apps. It is not evidence of flagship-level gaming or camera-processing performance by itself; those experiences depend on the application, thermal limits, display settings and future software optimization.

What the 24% figure means

In an August 2026 product story, Fairphone wrote: “App loading and switching speeds are faster by up to 24% while system RAM reservation time is down by up to 20%.” The comparison is against the earlier Gen. 6 and is explicitly a Fairphone-reported result. The cited material does not provide an independent benchmark, test protocol, sample size or hands-on measurement, so treat “up to” as a best-case vendor claim rather than a guaranteed improvement in every app.

The move from Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 in Gen. 6 to Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 in Gen. 6+ establishes a newer processor generation. It does not, on its own, predict frame rates, battery life or loading times for your particular games and applications. If performance is decisive, look for independent tests of the exact retail software version and compare the workloads you actually use.

Battery life, charging and network checks

Fairphone’s product material describes battery life of “up to two days.” That is a manufacturer claim, and no controlled independent battery test is established here. Screen brightness, mobile signal, 5G use, camera recording, gaming and background synchronization can all reduce runtime. The available official material does not state a single guaranteed full-charge time, so do not infer one from the battery-replacement price or processor specification.

Network support is also regional. On the US page, Fairphone says AT&T and T-Mobile are supported, Verizon and carriers using its network are not, and some MVNO support is partial. Check your exact carrier, bands, plan and eSIM or SIM requirements with Fairphone’s live compatibility checker before ordering; a phone that works on one country’s network may not work on another’s.

What ownership may cost over time

The handset price and a spare part’s price answer different questions. A €39.95 battery or €89.95 display can be substantially cheaper than replacing an entire phone, but only if the part is in stock, shipping is reasonable and the repair succeeds. Factor in:

  • The local purchase price and tax, rather than a foreign-region MSRP.
  • Shipping and any customs charges for parts.
  • Whether you already own a T5 Torx driver.
  • Lost time or professional labor if a DIY repair is not suitable.
  • Your carrier’s compatibility and the remaining software-support period.

Fairphone’s five-year warranty and June 2033 security horizon can improve the ownership case, but they do not guarantee that every module will remain continuously stocked or that a repair will be covered.

Common problems and the right next step

The replacement part is listed but unavailable

Confirm that you selected the correct country, then use the store’s notification option or contact regional support. Do not substitute a Gen. 6 component merely because it looks similar; confirm model compatibility first.

The phone will not start after a repair

Power it down, reopen it and inspect connector seating and screw placement. If the original part is available, reinstall it to separate a faulty replacement from damage introduced during the repair. Stop if a battery is swollen, punctured or hot, and use professional service.

An update has not arrived

Check the phone’s current Android version, available storage, date and network connection, then check Fairphone’s release notes and support page. The roadmap promises a support period and cadence, not a specific delivery date for every country or carrier.

You want to install an alternative operating system

Back up first and read the exact instructions for the OS and Gen. 6+. Unlocking or modifying software can affect security features, app compatibility and warranty handling; the regional warranty wording should be your authority.

Bottom line

The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is a strong fit for buyers who value replaceable hardware and a clearly stated long support horizon. Fairphone’s 12-part design, official module catalog and Android 16 roadmap are concrete advantages. Availability, warranty treatment, network compatibility and the real-world size of the performance gain remain country- and workload-dependent, so verify those details before purchase rather than relying on the headline claims alone.
