Fairbuds 2 are worth considering if repairability and lower electronic waste matter as much to you as everyday wireless-earbud features. Fairphone combines seven user-replaceable parts and tool-free battery swaps with LDAC, hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth 6.0 dual multipoint, IP54 resistance and up to 40 hours of playback. Their main uncertainty is not the specification sheet but the lack of broad, independent long-term testing of sound, ANC, call quality, durability and battery ageing.
What makes Fairbuds 2 different?
The defining feature is a modular design intended to keep the earbuds in service when a battery, earbud or charging case fails. Fairphone says seven parts can be replaced by the user. Batteries are replaceable in both earbuds and in the case, and the swap is designed to be tool-free and glue-free. Fairphone sells replacement batteries, a case core and individual earbuds, so a problem with one component does not automatically require replacing the whole set.
That is a practical sustainability advantage, but it is not the same as a measured lifecycle result. No independent statistic establishing Fairbuds 2’s carbon savings or total waste reduction has been published in the available evidence.

Bluetooth 6.0 dual multipoint is useful if you regularly move between two paired devices, while LDAC can provide higher-bitrate audio when both the source device and connection conditions support it. IP54 indicates protection from dust ingress and water splashes; it does not make the earbuds waterproof or suitable for submersion.

Battery life: read the claims by mode
Fairphone’s headline figures are mode-dependent rather than a single guaranteed runtime. The company rates each earbud for up to eight hours with ANC disabled and up to six hours with ANC enabled. With the charging case, total playback is advertised as up to 40 hours. 01net repeats the six- and eight-hour per-earbud figures. These are maximum claims, so codec choice, volume, microphone use, temperature and connection conditions can reduce actual runtime.

How good is the sound?
Fairphone says the new 11 mm bio-cellulose driver is lighter and faster than the original Fairbuds driver and produces “a brighter, crisper treble.” What Hi-Fi reports that manufacturer claim. It indicates the intended tuning and a claimed generational improvement, but the available coverage does not establish independent long-term listening comparisons or published frequency-response measurements. Treat the sound upgrade as promising rather than independently proven.

LDAC support broadens the technical feature set beyond basic Bluetooth audio. To use it, your phone or music player must support LDAC, and the setting may trade connection stability or battery life for higher bitrate. The earbuds will still operate with standard Bluetooth audio when LDAC is unavailable.

Fairbuds 2 use hybrid ANC and six microphones, with capacitive touch controls for playback and calls. Those specifications suggest a complete everyday feature set, but no broad independent test set establishes their noise-reduction level, transparency performance or microphone quality in traffic, wind or busy offices. Buyers who need proven call clarity or class-leading ANC should wait for measured comparisons rather than infer performance from the component count.

Can you replace the battery yourself?
- Obtain the correct Fairbuds 2 replacement battery for the earbud or charging case.
- Follow Fairphone’s replacement instructions for the specific component; the design is intended to require no tools and no glue.
- Install the replacement, close the housing securely and test charging before returning the part to daily use.
- If only one side has failed, consider a single replacement earbud instead of buying a complete set; Fairphone lists individual earbuds among its replacement options.
The modular approach means battery ageing can be handled as a component repair. The available sources do not establish how many replacement cycles the parts will withstand or the long-term availability period for every spare.
Price and availability
Fairphone’s US product page lists Fairbuds 2 at $119.99. Launch coverage reports a €119 price in Europe. Those figures are regional launch or listed prices, not a universal worldwide price; taxes, shipping, retailer stock and later promotions can change the amount. Are Fairbuds 2 more sustainable than conventional earbuds?
They are easier to repair and keep in use than sealed earbuds that require replacement when a battery degrades. Seven replaceable parts, including both earbud batteries and the case battery, directly support that ownership model. However, there is no independent lifecycle-carbon statistic in the available evidence, and no long-term study showing how many years or replacement cycles Fairbuds 2 achieve in practice. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Fairbuds 2 offer an unusually repairable design that can reduce the need for whole-product replacement, while the size of the environmental benefit remains unmeasured.
