The “Failed to verify username” message means Minecraft could not confirm your account with the authentication service before you joined a server. It usually comes from an expired launcher session, an authentication outage, a connection or security-software problem, or an account that the server cannot verify as a purchased Java Edition profile.
Start with the reversible fixes: close Minecraft and the launcher completely, reopen them, then sign out of the launcher account and sign back in. Check status.mojang.com before changing advanced settings. If you own the server, first determine whether one player or every player is affected; that distinction tells you whether to investigate the client account or the server’s authentication path.

What “failed to verify username” means
A multiplayer server running in online mode asks the account services to validate the identity associated with the joining Minecraft profile. When that validation does not complete, the server refuses the connection and displays the error. The message concerns account verification; it does not, by itself, mean that your username is banned, already taken, or incorrectly spelled.
Most public servers use online-mode=true, the normal setting in a standalone server’s server.properties file. In that mode, the server expects a profile that can be matched to a purchased Java Edition account. A launcher that cannot present a valid session, an unavailable authentication service, or a connection that blocks the session check can all produce the same visible message.

Because several unrelated failures surface as one error, the fastest solution is to test the least disruptive possibilities first. Do not begin by editing server files or disabling account verification.
Choose the right troubleshooting path

Ask another player to try the same server before making changes. That simple comparison prevents you from rebuilding a working server when the problem is limited to one account.
Fixes for players, in the safest order
1. Fully close Minecraft and the launcher
Exit the game, then close the launcher window rather than leaving it minimized. If the launcher has a background process, end it using your operating system’s normal task manager or process viewer. Wait a few seconds and open the launcher again before starting Minecraft.
This refreshes the in-memory session information that can become invalid after the launcher has remained open for a long time, after switching Microsoft accounts, or after changing the account password. A normal restart is reversible and does not alter worlds, server settings, or account data.
2. Sign out, then sign back in
If restarting does not help, use the account or profile menu in the launcher to sign out. Close and reopen the launcher if it asks you to do so, then sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the Java Edition profile you intend to use.
Take care when more than one account is stored on the computer. Confirm the displayed account before launching the game; a successful launcher sign-in to the wrong account will still fail to verify the profile expected by a server. Signing out and in again forces the launcher to obtain a fresh authentication token instead of reusing a stale one.

Open status.mojang.com and look for an incident affecting Minecraft or account authentication. If the service is down or degraded, local changes cannot restore verification. Wait for the service to recover and retry later.

An outage can look exactly like a broken launcher: repeated restarts, password prompts, and server retries will not help while the authentication endpoint is unavailable. Avoid changing server security settings to work around a temporary service problem.
4. Confirm that the account is eligible for the server
Online-mode servers verify accounts that have a purchased Java Edition profile. Unofficial or non-premium launchers cannot provide the account proof that such a server requires, so the server rejects the connection.
Use the official launcher and sign in with the account that owns Java Edition. If you recently changed accounts, do not assume that a username shown in a third-party launcher proves ownership. The relevant test is whether the signed-in Microsoft account has a valid purchased profile that the authentication service can verify.
5. Test the network without a VPN or proxy
Authentication requires the launcher and game to reach the account services. A VPN, proxy, unstable connection, or restrictive network can interrupt that exchange even when ordinary websites load.
- Disconnect the VPN temporarily.
- Remove or bypass a manually configured proxy for the test.
- Restart the router, then wait until the connection is stable.
- Try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, if available.
- Launch Minecraft again and test the same server.
If another connection works, the account and server are probably usable. The original network, VPN endpoint, proxy, or router policy needs investigation. Re-enable privacy and routing tools one at a time later so you can identify which change causes the failure.
6. Update the launcher and Java
Install the current version offered by the Minecraft launcher and update the Java runtime used by your installation. A mismatched or outdated runtime can interfere with the client’s ability to complete a session check, especially after a launcher or game update.
When installing Java, use Oracle’s official download source rather than an untrusted mirror. Keep a record of which runtime the launcher is configured to use; installing a new runtime does not necessarily make the launcher switch to it automatically. After updating, restart the launcher and sign in again before testing.

7. Test firewall or antivirus interference
Security software can block the launcher, Java, or the game’s outbound authentication traffic. To test that possibility, temporarily pause the relevant firewall or antivirus protection for the shortest possible time, launch Minecraft, and attempt one connection.
Restore protection immediately after the test. If verification succeeds only while protection is paused, create a specific allow rule or exception for the Minecraft launcher and the Java process instead of leaving the firewall or antivirus disabled. The exact menu names vary by security product, but the principle is the same: permit the trusted game components while keeping general network protection active.
8. Undo recent account or network changes
Think back to the last change before the error appeared: a password change, account switch, VPN installation, proxy change, launcher update, or security-policy update. Reverse one change at a time and test after each reversal. This produces a useful cause-and-effect result and avoids making several unrelated changes that are difficult to undo.
How to tell whether the player-side fix worked
A successful fix has a clear result: the launcher signs in without repeatedly requesting credentials, Minecraft starts under the intended account, and the server accepts the connection. If the launcher signs in but one particular server still rejects you, ask another player to join and compare results. That separates an account or network issue from a server-specific problem.
If you still fail on every server after a fresh sign-in, an outage check, and a second network test, stop repeating the same steps. Record the time, account used, network tested, and whether the status page reported an incident. Those details help a server administrator or account-support channel investigate without guessing.
Server-owner troubleshooting
1. Establish the scope before editing anything
Ask whether the failure affects one player, a small group, or everyone. If other players can join normally, the server is completing authentication for at least some accounts. Concentrate first on the affected player’s launcher session, account eligibility, and network.
If every player begins seeing the error at once, check the service status and the server’s outbound connectivity. A sudden, universal failure is not normally fixed by asking each player to change their launcher settings.

2. Check the authentication path
A standalone server in online mode must reach the account services while validating a joining profile. Review recent firewall, host, DNS, router, or outbound-network changes on the machine running the server. Confirm that the server process still has permission to make the required external connections.

Compare a failed attempt with a known-good player’s connection, and note whether the failure began after a restart, network change, software update, or hosting move. Do not expose players’ credentials or session tokens while collecting diagnostic information.
3. Review recent configuration changes
Inspect the server configuration for edits made immediately before the error appeared. A typo, an incomplete restore, or a changed authentication-related setting can affect every player. Make a backup of the current configuration before reverting a known recent change so you can recover if the change was unrelated.
Do not change online-mode=true to false on a public standalone server merely to make the message disappear. Disabling online mode removes the verification that proves a player owns the account and allows unpaid or impersonated accounts to connect. It hides the symptom by weakening access control; it does not repair authentication.
4. Check proxy networks separately
In a network using Velocity or BungeeCord, the proxy handles authentication before forwarding a player to a backend server. A proxy change, broken authentication route, or incorrect handoff can therefore make backend servers report a username-verification failure even when an individual backend appears healthy.
Test the proxy as its own component and then test a backend through the proxy. Review changes to the proxy software, its connection to the account services, and the forwarding arrangement between proxy and backend. If direct backend testing is part of your maintenance process, keep it isolated and protected; do not expose an online-mode backend to the public internet as a workaround.
5. Treat hosts-file edits as an advanced last resort
Some community troubleshooting guides suggest editing the operating system’s hosts file to work around name-resolution problems. This is an advanced change with a high chance of creating a new, harder-to-diagnose failure if an incorrect address is entered or a temporary workaround is left in place.

Only consider it after confirming an actual name-resolution problem, record the original file first, make one documented change, and remove the entry when it is no longer needed. Never copy an address from an untrusted post, and do not use hosts-file changes to bypass account verification.

“I left the launcher open overnight.”
Close the launcher and Minecraft completely, reopen them, and sign out and back in if the first restart does not work. A long-lived launcher session can retain an invalid token.

“I changed my Microsoft password today.”
Sign out of the launcher and authenticate again. Password changes can invalidate the session that was issued before the change.
“The server worked yesterday, and nobody can join today.”
Check status.mojang.com first, then inspect the server’s outbound network and any proxy or firewall changes. Do not turn off online mode while the service status is being checked.
“Everyone else can join, but I cannot.”
Use the player sequence: full restart, launcher sign-out and sign-in, account-ownership check, VPN or alternate-network test, then launcher and Java updates. The fact that others can join makes a total server outage less likely.
“A non-premium launcher reaches the server but is rejected.”
An online-mode server is behaving as designed when it rejects an account it cannot match to a purchased profile. Use a legitimate Java Edition account and the official launcher, or join a server whose operator explicitly documents a different authentication model.

That result demonstrates only that account verification was bypassed. It also permits unverified and potentially impersonated accounts, so it is unsafe for a public server and should not be treated as a fix.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly restart the server while an account-service outage is active.
- Do not leave a firewall or antivirus disabled after a test.
- Do not share passwords, session tokens, or launcher credentials while asking for help.
- Do not assume the username is banned or unavailable solely because verification failed.
- Do not install Java or a launcher from an untrusted download site.
- Do not edit the hosts file or proxy settings without recording the original values and a rollback plan.
- Do not disable online mode on a public server to conceal an authentication problem.
Prevention checklist
- Close and relaunch the game after changing accounts or passwords.
- Keep the launcher and Java runtime maintained through trusted sources.
- Document VPN, proxy, firewall, and router changes so they can be reversed quickly.
- For server maintenance, back up configuration files before proxy or authentication changes.
- Monitor the service-status page when multiple players report the same error.
- Keep public servers in online mode unless you fully understand the security consequences of another authentication design.
- When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time and record the outcome.
When to escalate
Escalate to the server operator when the problem occurs only on one server, especially if other servers work. Include your launcher account type, the time of the failed attempt, whether another network changed the result, and whether other players were affected. Escalate a broader account or launcher problem through the appropriate account-support channel after checking the status page and completing the fresh-login test.
For administrators, provide the affected time window, the number of players affected, recent proxy or firewall changes, and whether direct and proxied connections behave differently. This information distinguishes a client token problem from a service outage or a server authentication-path failure.
