When Factorio’s Set recipe control does nothing, selects the wrong product, or keeps changing recipes, the cause is usually one of five things: the recipe is not researched or cannot run in that machine, the signal is zero or negative, red and green wire inputs are adding an unintended signal, ingredients are stranded in the assembler’s trash inventory, or a requester chest is disabled independently of the assembler. Isolate the circuit to one known-good positive recipe signal, clear the machine, and then reconnect the rest of the system.
The procedure below follows Factorio’s documented signal-filtering and priority rules, so it also explains flickering recipes and recipes that refuse to change after a blueprint or combinator setup.
Start with this five-minute diagnosis
Do these checks in order. Each one removes a different class of failure without changing the rest of your factory permanently.
- Open the assembling machine and verify that its circuit-network Set recipe option is enabled.
- Confirm that the recipe’s technology has been researched and that the recipe is compatible with this machine. A signal cannot unlock a recipe that the force has not researched.
- Disconnect the red wire, then the green wire, and watch the machine after each change. Red and green signals are summed, so either wire can be supplying the winning value.
- Temporarily connect one constant combinator that emits only the intended recipe signal with a positive value, such as 1. This is the clean test input.
- Empty the assembler’s input and trash slots. Leftover ingredients can block a recipe change even when the circuit signal is correct.
If the machine works with the single constant-combinator test, the assembler is functioning; reconnect the original combinators one at a time until the unwanted signal or condition is identified.

How Set recipe selects a recipe
Set recipe is not a simple “highest number wins” switch. Factorio filters the incoming circuit signals, checks what the machine is allowed to craft, and then applies a priority order. The auxiliary documentation for version 2.1.21 describes the following behavior.

Because red and green networks are summed, “I sent one recipe signal” is not proof that the machine sees only one signal. A nearby combinator, inserter, belt, chest, or other connected machine can contribute another signal through either wire color.
Crafting machines can both receive recipe signals and report information about the current recipe, including its ingredients. That makes feedback loops possible: a machine’s output signal can return through a connected wire and compete with the command signal. During diagnosis, remove every feedback path and test with one isolated input.
Step-by-step repair procedure
1. Confirm the machine and control
Open the assembling machine, chemical plant, furnace, or other crafting machine you are controlling. In its circuit-network settings, make sure Set recipe is selected. Do not confuse this with an enable/disable condition: an enabled machine can still have no recipe, and a machine with a recipe can still be disabled by a separate condition.
Check the machine’s allowed recipe category as well. A recipe that belongs in a chemical plant or furnace will not become valid in an assembling machine merely because its icon is transmitted on a wire.
2. Verify research and craftability
Open the technology screen and confirm that the recipe’s technology is researched. Then check that the selected machine can craft it. A recipe copied into a blueprint before research does not bypass the research system; after researching, set or paste the recipe again.

Factorio staff member Rseding91 described this as intended behavior on 28 February 2019: “Thanks for the report however this is working as intended: you can’t set a recipe without having it researched. To set a recipe means to use it and to use any recipe means it should be researched otherwise it bypasses the entire research system.”
3. Test one positive recipe signal
Place a constant combinator beside the machine. Configure exactly one signal: the recipe signal you want, with a value above zero. Connect it with one wire color and observe the machine. If the recipe appears, the machine, research and signal type are valid; the fault is in the original network.
If nothing happens, recheck the signal icon. A virtual signal that resembles a recipe label is not a recipe signal, and a value of zero is ignored. Use the actual item, entity or fluid signal associated with the researched recipe, depending on what the machine accepts.
4. Isolate red and green networks
With the original wiring restored, remove the red wire only and observe the recipe. Reconnect it and remove the green wire only. A change on either test proves that the disconnected color was contributing a signal.

5. Remove signals that cannot select recipes
Temporarily remove virtual, space-location, asteroid-chunk and quality signals. The documented Set recipe filter ignores them, so they can make a display look busy without helping selection. Also remove non-positive values. A decider that outputs zero when false is harmless for selection, but a negative value cannot select a recipe and can obscure what you intended to send while you are debugging.

6. Check for a competing item, entity or fluid signal
If the machine chooses a different recipe rather than remaining empty, inspect all item, entity and fluid signals on both wire colors. A direct researched recipe signal has priority. When no direct match is available, Factorio falls back to item signals, then entity signals, then fluid signals. A belt or chest monitor can therefore make the assembler choose a valid but unintended recipe.
Remove the fallback signals and send only the direct recipe signal. Once that works, restore the fallback logic with mutually exclusive conditions so that only the intended signal is positive at a time.

Stop the machine and remove every leftover ingredient from its input slots and trash inventory. If the machine has requester or logistic slots, clear any items that were left behind by the previous recipe. Then apply the new recipe signal again.
This is an intentional safeguard, not a random circuit failure. Factorio developer boskid explained on 18 December 2024: “That is not a bug. Reason why assembler circuit set recipe works that way is two-fold: first it solves issue of infinite trash storage where amount of trash would accumulate in the trash inventory every time a recipe is changed or cleared, and second is that it forces players to take a look and realize there are items to be taken out that need to be handled.”
8. Reapply blueprints after research
If the setup came from a blueprint placed before the required technology was researched, research the technology first. Then paste the recipe again or send the recipe signal again. Do not assume that a blueprint will retroactively activate a recipe that was unavailable when it was placed.
9. Diagnose the requester chest separately
A requester chest is a separate control point. A correctly selected assembler recipe does not guarantee that the chest will request ingredients.

- Confirm that the chest is inside logistic-network coverage and that the required providers and robots are available.
- Open the chest and verify that its ingredient requests are present.
- Check any circuit condition that enables or disables the chest. A disabled requester chest does not request items.
- If you copied an assembler recipe to the chest, remember that Factorio configures approximately enough ingredients for 30 seconds of continuous crafting; this is a request amount, not a guarantee that items will arrive instantly.
Test the chest with its circuit enable condition removed. If requests appear, restore the condition with a threshold that matches the intended production cycle.
Why the recipe flickers or switches to the wrong item
Two combinators are positive at the same time
A common selector design uses one combinator per product. If two conditions are true, both recipe signals reach the machine. Since red and green values are summed, a signal can change when an inventory count crosses a threshold, causing the displayed recipe to alternate. Make the conditions mutually exclusive, or add a priority stage so only one recipe signal is positive at a time.
A feedback signal is being mistaken for a command
Assemblers and other machines can output the ingredients or status of their current recipe. If that output is wired back to the machine’s Set recipe input, the machine can select a different recipe as soon as its inventory changes. Separate monitoring wires from command wires, or filter the monitoring network before it reaches the recipe input.

The intended value falls to zero
Many decider conditions output a recipe signal only while stock is below a target. When the stock reaches the target, the output becomes zero and is ignored. If another recipe signal remains positive, the machine switches to that recipe; if none remains, it can appear to have lost its recipe. Watch the actual signal values rather than only the icons.
An unsupported signal is being used
Quality, asteroid-chunk, space-location and virtual signals may be useful elsewhere in a circuit, but the Set recipe filter ignores them. Replace the selector output with the actual researched recipe signal or with a supported item, entity or fluid signal used deliberately as a fallback.
Direct recipe signals versus fallback signals

For a factory that must change recipes predictably, direct recipe signals are easier to audit. Fallback signals are useful when a circuit is intentionally driven by inventory or world-state information, but they require stricter filtering.

Assembler-only versus assembler-plus-requester designs

When troubleshooting the combined design, first prove that the assembler changes recipes with a manually supplied ingredient. Only then test requester coverage and circuit enable logic. This separates recipe selection from logistics.

Reliable wiring patterns for recipe switching
Single-recipe test cell
- Place one assembling machine and one constant combinator.
- Enable Set recipe on the machine.
- Send one positive, researched recipe signal on one wire color.
- Leave every other circuit connection disconnected.
- Clear the machine’s input and trash slots, then observe the recipe.
This cell establishes a known-good baseline. Keep it intact while reconnecting the production network so that a failure can be compared against a working signal.
Mutually exclusive selector
For multiple products, arrange the decider conditions so that only one product can output a positive recipe signal at a time. A stock threshold that is true for two products simultaneously is not a priority system; it is two commands. If ties are possible, add an explicit priority stage before the signals reach the machine.
Separated command and monitoring networks
Use one network for recipe commands and another for inventory or production feedback whenever possible. If the networks must meet, filter the feedback to remove item, entity and fluid signals before it reaches Set recipe. This prevents a status signal from becoming an unintended recipe request.
Symptoms and targeted fixes

What not to do
- Do not raise a signal’s value to compensate for a recipe that is unresearched; signal magnitude cannot bypass research.
- Do not assume disconnecting only one wire isolates the network; the other color may still carry the competing signal.
- Do not clear only the visible input slots. The trash inventory can contain the items that block a recipe change.
- Do not troubleshoot requester delivery by changing the assembler’s recipe signal. Logistic enable conditions and network coverage are separate problems.
- Do not use quality, asteroid-chunk, space-location or virtual signals as Set recipe commands; the documented filter ignores them.
Final verification checklist
Before returning the factory to automatic operation, verify each item below:

- The command signal is a supported recipe signal with a positive value.
- Red and green wires have been checked for summed, unintended inputs.
- No item, entity or fluid fallback signal can win unexpectedly.
- Assembler input and trash slots are empty before a recipe switch.
- Blueprint recipes were reapplied after the relevant research was completed.
- Requester chests have valid requests, logistic coverage and an enabled circuit condition.
Once these conditions hold, a Set recipe failure is almost always traceable to one remaining signal source or one inventory item that has not been cleared. The fastest fix is therefore isolation: one machine, one positive signal, empty slots, then gradual reconnection.
