There is no defensible single winner for privacy. Facebook’s official documentation describes detailed controls for post audiences, profile visibility, tagging, public interactions, friends lists and search-engine links. The Instagram-specific material available for this comparison does not establish a current, like-for-like inventory of its controls, so it would be misleading to declare Instagram more private—or to assume that similarly named settings work the same way.
Use this guide to understand what Facebook’s controls actually do, identify the comparison points that must be checked on Instagram, and audit the settings that can change who sees your content. Treat each platform’s audience setting as a separate decision, especially when content is cross-posted.
What this comparison can—and cannot—prove
Privacy on a social network is not one switch. It is the combined result of account visibility, the audience selected for each item, tagging and mentions, discovery settings, interaction permissions, and the way content is shared to another service. A private choice in one area does not necessarily hide activity in another.

Facebook Help Center documentation provides a detailed description of those areas. The same material does not provide a verified, current inventory of Instagram’s private-account, story, comment, message, tag or mention controls. Instagram labels and availability can also vary by account type, age, region and app version. For that reason, the Instagram column below identifies what still needs confirmation rather than filling gaps with assumptions.

How Facebook’s privacy controls work
Find the central privacy categories
Facebook places the main controls under Settings & privacy and Audience and visibility. The documented categories include profile details; how people find and contact you; posts; stories; pages; reels; followers and public content; profile and tagging; and blocking.
These are categories, not a promise that one change covers everything. A post’s audience, the visibility of your Friends section, and whether a search engine can link to your profile are separate decisions. Facebook also warns that “Some of these settings may change based on your profile type.” If an option is missing or worded differently, check the profile type and the current app or web interface rather than assuming the control has been removed.

Facebook lets you select who can see a post. The important distinction is between a post’s selected audience and the people who may gain access through tagging. A post that starts with a restricted audience is not automatically isolated from every person connected to a tagged profile.

For a privacy audit, review both the default audience for future posts and the audience on older posts that matter. Use the individual post’s audience control when a particular update contains sensitive information; changing a default does not retroactively rewrite every previous post.
Understand how tagging can expand visibility
Tagging connects a post to another profile and can place the post on that person’s profile. Facebook documents an additional audience setting for tagged posts. That setting defaults to Friends; the tagged person can then add their friends to the post’s visibility. The resulting audience can include the original audience selected by the person who posted and the additional friends allowed through the tagged person’s setting.
This is why a post can reach more people than the original poster expected. Before tagging someone, consider that the tag creates another profile connection and may make the post visible to people who were not in the original audience. If you are the person being tagged, review profile-and-tagging controls and use review options where available before a tag appears on your profile.

Check the Friends section separately
The cited Facebook help page says the Friends section is public by default and lets you choose who can see your own list. It also cautions: “Bear in mind that you can only control who can see your friends list on your profile.”

That limitation matters. Hiding your list does not control how another person displays their friendship with you. Mutual friends may remain visible, and another profile’s settings can reveal a connection even when your own Friends section is restricted. Treat this as a limit on control, not a malfunction.
Limit likes and comments on public profile information
Facebook provides audience choices for likes and comments on public profile information. The documented choices are Public, Friends of friends and Friends. These settings affect who can interact with the specified public information; they do not automatically change the audience of every post or hide your entire profile.
Tagging can still affect visibility. Review the audience of the underlying item and any profile or tag connection instead of relying only on the interaction setting.
Do not confuse the activity log with private activity
Facebook says the activity log is visible only to the account holder. That describes the log interface, not every item recorded in it. Posts, comments, reactions or other actions listed in the log may still be visible elsewhere on Facebook according to their own audience and the context in which they were made.

Use the log to find and manage activity, but inspect the privacy setting on the underlying post or action when you need to know who can actually see it.
Understand the search-engine setting’s limit
Facebook offers a setting concerning whether external search engines link to your profile. Turning that option off is not a deletion request to every search engine. Facebook cautions that it cannot control content already indexed or cached, so an existing result may remain for some time after the setting changes.
Use the setting to stop or reduce future linking where Facebook can control it, then treat old search results as a separate cleanup problem. Removing a Facebook link does not guarantee that a cached copy, quoted text or a page discovered elsewhere disappears immediately.

Blocking is its own category under Audience and visibility. It should be checked alongside followers and public content, stories, pages and reels because limiting one content type does not necessarily change every other category. Make a list of the people or audiences you need to exclude, then confirm each relevant category rather than assuming a single privacy preset covers the account.

Why Instagram should not be treated as a Facebook clone
Instagram and Facebook may use familiar terms such as private, public, tag, mention, story and reel, but identical labels do not establish identical behavior. The available official material does not verify how Instagram currently handles each of those controls, nor whether the rules differ by age, region, account type or app version.
When comparing your accounts, record the exact setting name, the content type it governs and whether it changes a default or only one item. Check Instagram’s official Help Center immediately before making a safety decision, and confirm the result with a low-risk test account or harmless post if the setting is important. Do not infer that a private choice on Instagram automatically changes the Facebook audience of a cross-posted item.
Cross-posting from Instagram to Facebook
Facebook documents a specific behavior for reels shared from Instagram. If no Facebook default audience has been selected, a shared reel may receive a Facebook audience of Friends when the Instagram account is private, or Public when the Instagram account is public. This is a Facebook rule for the cross-posted reel, not a complete description of Instagram’s privacy system.

The audiences can still differ because Instagram followers and Facebook friends are different groups. Someone who follows the Instagram account may not be a Facebook friend, and a Facebook friend may not follow the Instagram account. Always inspect the destination platform’s audience before sharing content that was created with a narrower audience in mind.
A practical Facebook privacy audit
- Open the control area. Go to Settings & privacy, then Audience and visibility.
- Review profile details. Check which personal details are visible and whether the selected audience matches what you intend to disclose.
- Set the post audience. Review the default for future posts, then inspect older posts containing personal, financial, location or family information.
- Audit stories, pages and reels. These are separate documented categories. Check each one instead of assuming the post setting applies to all formats.
- Configure profile and tagging. Review who can post on your profile, how tagged posts are handled and whether you want to review tags before they appear.
- Check the Friends section. Choose who can see your list, while remembering that another person’s settings and mutual-friend displays remain outside your control.
- Limit public interactions. For likes and comments on public profile information, choose among Public, Friends of friends and Friends according to the exposure you can accept.
- Inspect the activity log. Use it to locate actions, but open the related item to check that item’s actual audience.
- Review external search linking. Turn off the profile-linking option if you do not want future search-engine links, and allow for already indexed or cached results to persist.
- Check blocking and public-content settings. Confirm that people you need to exclude are covered across the relevant content categories.
Common privacy mistakes
- Assuming a hidden Friends section hides every friendship. Other profiles and mutual-friend displays can still reveal connections.
- Forgetting the tagged person’s audience. A tag can add the tagged person’s friends to the people who can see a post.
- Treating the activity log as a private copy of Facebook. The log is private to the account holder; the recorded content may not be.
- Expecting search results to vanish immediately. Facebook cannot remove indexes or caches controlled by search engines.
- Using one default for every format. Stories, reels, pages, followers and public content have their own documented categories.
- Assuming Instagram and Facebook audiences match. Their follower and friend groups differ, and cross-posted reels can receive a different destination audience.
- Relying on an old screenshot. Profile type, age, region and app version can change which settings appear and how they are labeled.
Which platform is more private?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than a universal ranking. Facebook’s documentation demonstrates granular controls and clearly states several important limitations, including tag-based audience expansion, public-by-default Friends visibility on the cited page, and the persistence of search-engine indexes. That makes Facebook’s privacy model more explicitly documented here—not necessarily more private in every real-world configuration.
Instagram cannot be rated against each Facebook category without verified, current Instagram documentation. The safer decision is therefore need-based: choose the platform whose current controls let you set the audience you require, then verify the setting on the specific content you are about to publish. If content crosses platforms, judge the destination audience independently.
Questions to answer before publishing sensitive content
- Which exact audience should see this item: everyone, connections, a smaller group or nobody?
- Does the item contain a tag, mention, location or link that creates another path to discovery?
- Will it be shared to a second platform with a different friend or follower graph?
- Could an external search engine already have indexed related information?
- Does the account’s age, region, profile type or app version change the available control?
If any answer is uncertain, pause the post and verify the current platform documentation and the destination preview first. Privacy controls are useful only when the audience they produce is understood.
