No Facebook setting can guarantee that Marketplace is scam-free. You can, however, reduce unwanted exposure by tightening who can find and contact you, checking a seller before replying, keeping conversations on Facebook, blocking abusive accounts, reporting suspicious activity, and securing the account behind your listings and messages.

Start at Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility. Facebook says you can view and adjust privacy settings from this section. Menu names and available controls can differ by device, profile type, and region, so use the labels currently shown in your app.

Choose the right control for the problem

Different actions solve different parts of the scam problem. Blocking limits contact with one account; it does not remove a listing or stop a person from using another profile. Reporting asks Facebook to review content or behavior. Privacy controls reduce discoverability but can make legitimate transactions less convenient.

The qualitative comparisons are practical guidance, not a promise from Facebook that any setting will prevent fraud.

1. Tighten privacy and contact settings

Open the current privacy controls

  1. Open Facebook and select your profile menu.
  2. Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  3. Under Audience and visibility, review the sections for how people find and contact you, public posts and followers, profile and tagging, and Blocking.

Facebook changes labels and placement periodically. If a control is not in the exact location above, use the settings search field and look for the current equivalent.

Reduce public contact routes

Limit the audience for posts that reveal when you are selling, moving, traveling, or away from home. Review who can follow you, send friend requests, look you up using your email address or phone number, and see posts in which you are tagged. The goal is not to make your account invisible; it is to avoid giving a stranger a complete profile of your identity and routines.

Remove phone numbers, personal email addresses, payment handles, and identity documents from listing photos and public profile fields. A privacy setting can reduce discovery, but it cannot retract information that another person has already copied, downloaded, or photographed.

Check blocking before you need it

Open Settings → Audience and visibility → Blocking and learn where blocked profiles appear. Knowing the path makes it easier to confirm that a block was saved after you act from a Marketplace conversation or a profile page.

2. Vet a listing and seller before replying

Inspect the seller profile and ratings

Open the seller’s Marketplace profile and ratings when those features are available on your device. Look for a consistent history rather than relying on one five-star review, a newly created profile, or a single transaction. Ratings can be incomplete, copied, or unavailable in some regions, so they are clues, not proof of identity.

Check the offer itself

  • Compare the price with similar local listings. An unusually low price paired with urgency is a reason to slow down, not a reason to send a deposit.
  • Look for original, coherent photos. Reused images, mismatched backgrounds, or photos that do not show the exact item deserve extra questions.
  • Ask for practical details a genuine owner should be able to answer, such as condition, dimensions, accessories, or a time to inspect the item.
  • Keep questions and answers in Marketplace or Messenger so the conversation remains available for review.

Facebook’s Marketplace safety resources cover seller verification, ratings, scam patterns, reporting, and safer meetings. Use those resources alongside your own judgment; Facebook does not state that any single signal proves a seller is legitimate.

3. Keep messages and payments in safer channels

Recognize stop signals

Pause the transaction when a seller or buyer suddenly asks you to move to an unrelated chat app, sends a login link, requests gift cards, or insists on an irreversible payment method. A request to pay before you can verify the item, identity, or pickup arrangement is especially risky.

Do not enter your Facebook password or payment details through a link sent in a Marketplace message. Instead, open Facebook or your payment provider directly using the app or a bookmark you already trust.

Preserve evidence before ending contact

Save the listing URL, seller profile name, message timestamps, payment instructions, and screenshots before blocking or reporting. Listings can change or disappear, and preserving the original wording helps Facebook evaluate what happened. Keeping evidence does not mean continuing a conversation; stop replying once the behavior is clearly suspicious.

Set a clear transaction boundary

Tell the other person that you will communicate through Marketplace or Messenger and will inspect the item using the agreed safe-meeting plan. If they refuse and create urgency, end the exchange. Staying on Facebook is not a guarantee against fraud, but it keeps more context available for reporting and avoids handing your contact details to an unknown service.

4. Block abusive or clearly fraudulent accounts, knowing the limits

You can block from the Marketplace conversation or from the person’s profile. Afterward, open the Blocking settings list and confirm that the profile appears there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blocking is a boundary, not a complete removal. Facebook states that:

  • Previous message history can remain visible.
  • Messages in a group conversation you both share may still be visible.
  • Blocking one profile does not automatically block additional profiles that the same person creates.
  • Marketplace ratings or reviews may remain visible in some circumstances.

For those reasons, capture evidence before blocking and report the listing, profile, or message when the conduct appears fraudulent or violates policy. If a new profile contacts you, treat it as a separate account and repeat the evidence, block, and report process.

5. Report the listing, seller, or message and monitor the result

Submit the report from the relevant object

  1. Open the suspicious Marketplace listing, seller profile, or message.
  2. Use the available Report control and choose the reason that most closely matches what you observed.
  3. Include concise facts: what was offered, what request seemed deceptive, and any link or payment instruction.
  4. Keep your screenshots and listing details after submitting.

Facebook says it hides or removes content when review finds a Community Standards violation. Reporting does not guarantee removal, and a report is not a substitute for contacting your bank or payment provider if money has already moved.

Check Support Inbox

Open Help & support → Support Inbox to see decisions and available next steps. Facebook says a second review is usually completed within 24 hours when that option is offered. The timing and availability of an appeal can vary by report type and region.

6. Understand why Marketplace may stop you from messaging

An inability to send a message is not proof that the other person blocked you or that the listing is a scam. Facebook lists several possible causes:

J. J. Keller 2024 OSHA Safety Training Handbook, Softbound, English
  • Updated Compliance: While the new rule takes effect on 7/19/2024, training and compliance dates don’t start until 1/19/2026, giving your team ample time to prepare with this thorough guide to OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)).
  • Comprehensive Safety Training Handbook: Prepares your employees for 25 of OSHA’s hottest safety topics, from Confined Space Entry to Workplace Violence, ensuring they are equipped with vital safety knowledge for a safer work environment.
  • In-Depth, Easy-to-Understand Content: Each chapter tackles key workplace hazards like Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, and more, helping to prevent injuries and illnesses while promoting safe practices.
  • Interactive Learning with Quizzes: Engaging chapter review quizzes reinforce safety concepts, making it easier for employees to retain and apply the knowledge, with downloadable answer keys for easy tracking.
  • Specifications: English, Softbound, full-color pages (272 pages) offer clear, visually appealing safety information for a diverse workforce, with home safety details included throughout.
  • You and the other person are in regions where Marketplace access or messaging differs.
  • Your account has sent too many messages in a short period and has hit a messaging limit.
  • Your access to Marketplace has been removed or restricted under Facebook policies.

Check whether you can message other legitimate listings, look for a notice in Marketplace or Support Inbox, and review account security before trying repeatedly. Do not bypass a restriction by creating multiple accounts or moving immediately to an untrusted channel. If the listing is suspicious and the message control is unavailable, use any report option shown on the listing or seller profile.

7. Secure the Facebook account behind Marketplace

Scammers who take over an account can send convincing messages to your contacts or create listings under your name. Protect Marketplace activity with account-level controls:

  • Turn on login alerts so Facebook notifies you about sign-ins from unfamiliar devices or locations.
  • Enable two-factor authentication and keep the recovery method current.
  • Run Facebook’s security review and remove sessions, apps, or devices you no longer recognize.
  • Use a unique password and never reuse it on a site reached through a Marketplace link.
  • Learn Facebook’s phishing guidance. Treat urgent requests for codes, passwords, or identity documents as suspicious, even when the message appears to come from Facebook.

If you suspect takeover, change the password from Facebook’s own app or directly typed website address, sign out unfamiliar sessions, secure the email account used for recovery, and then review Marketplace messages and listings for activity you did not create.

8. Plan a safer handoff or meetup

Use the meeting-safety guidance available through Facebook’s Marketplace safety resources before agreeing to a pickup. Share the plan with someone you trust, choose a location and time that allow you to leave easily, and avoid sending money merely to reserve an item you have not verified. For high-value goods, arrange enough time to inspect the item and confirm that the description matches what you were offered.

Do not post your home address, identity document, or full daily schedule in a public listing. If a seller insists on an isolated location, refuses reasonable inspection, or changes the meeting terms at the last minute, cancel and report the exchange.

9. A practical response sequence

When a listing or message feels wrong, use this order:

  1. Stop clicking links and stop sending money.
  2. Save the listing, profile, messages, and payment instructions.
  3. Check the seller profile, ratings, and listing details for inconsistencies.
  4. Block the account if contact is abusive or clearly fraudulent.
  5. Report the listing, seller, or message through Facebook.
  6. Review Support Inbox for the decision or a second-review option.
  7. Check login alerts, two-factor authentication, and active sessions on your own account.
  8. Contact your bank or payment provider through its official channel if you already paid or disclosed financial information.

Privacy settings reduce how much a stranger can learn about you; careful vetting reduces the number of suspicious conversations you enter; reporting and account security address the damage that settings alone cannot prevent.
