There is no single privacy-preserving replacement for every Facebook feature. The right choice depends on what you actually use Facebook for: public updates, interest-based communities, organized group spaces, or private conversations.

Mastodon is the strongest fit for decentralized public posting, Signal for private messaging, Reddit for pseudonymous topic communities, and Discord for organized group spaces. Bluesky is a public conversation network, not a friends-only service. Every option still processes some account, device, content or metadata information, so “does not sell personal data” should never be read as “collects nothing.”

Start with the use case, not the brand

A privacy decision is clearer when you identify the audience you need before comparing services. Facebook combines several products under one account: a public or semi-public timeline, groups, event coordination, direct messages and identity-based profiles. The alternatives below separate those functions, and their privacy properties differ accordingly.

If you mainly want to… Best starting point Why Important limitation
Publish updates and follow people across a network Mastodon Federated servers, chronological feeds and user-curated timelines Your chosen server operator and rules matter
Join topic-based discussions under a pseudonym Reddit Communities are organized by subject, and a real name or photo is not required It is not a friends-only feed, and anonymity is not guaranteed
Coordinate a club, class, gaming group or project Discord Persistent group spaces with channels and moderation tools Discoverable or large spaces have different data-processing implications from private groups
Send private messages and create private group chats Signal Designed around private conversations A phone number is required to register
Participate in a large public conversation network Bluesky Public posting and discovery without a private-profile mode Posts, likes and blocks are public; it cannot provide a friends-only audience

These are functional starting points rather than claims that any service is a complete Facebook substitute. You may need two services—for example, Mastodon for public updates and Signal for family conversations.

What “privacy” means in this comparison

Privacy has several separate dimensions. Check each one instead of relying on a provider’s marketing summary.

  • Audience visibility: Is a post public, limited to a community, or exchanged only in a conversation?
  • Operator structure: Is one company responsible for the service, or does an independent server operator control your account environment?
  • Governance: Who writes moderation rules, handles reports and decides whether a server or account remains available?
  • Identifiers: Does registration require a phone number, a real-world identity, an email address or only a chosen username?
  • Processing: What account, device, content and usage information is collected, and for which purposes?
  • Retention and deletion: Does deleting a post remove it immediately from the interface, or can copies and storage records persist?
  • Discoverability and migration: Can other people find you easily, and can you move your social graph if the service or operator changes?

A statement such as “we do not sell personal information” addresses only one form of monetization. It does not establish minimal collection, private defaults, limited retention or immunity from legal requests.

Mastodon: decentralized public posting

How the network is organized

Mastodon is a federation of independently operated servers, often called instances. You choose a provider, create an account there and can follow people on other participating servers. Mastodon’s official product description says each server is an independent entity that can interoperate with others to form one global social network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This structure reduces dependence on one central operator, but it does not make every server equivalent. The operator of your selected server controls its local policies, moderation process, technical maintenance and practical access to your account. A server can also change its rules or shut down even while the wider network continues.

Why it may suit a privacy-conscious public feed

  • Feeds are described by Mastodon as chronological and user-curated rather than ad-ranked.
  • The service advertises no ads on its official site.
  • You can follow people across server boundaries, so choosing a smaller or more trusted provider does not necessarily isolate you from the wider network.
  • Mastodon says users can move profiles to another server without losing followers, which provides a migration path when a provider no longer fits.

What to check before joining

  1. Open the official server directory and shortlist servers whose language, location and moderation approach fit your needs.
  2. Read the specific server’s privacy policy, code of conduct, moderation process and suspension rules. The directory is a starting point, not a guarantee that all servers have identical practices.
  3. Check who operates the server, how long it has been running and how users can contact the administrator.
  4. Decide what identity you want to expose. A public profile and public posts can still be copied, indexed or reshared even if the server itself is community-run.
  5. Keep an export or record of important contacts and tell followers where to find you if you later move.

Organizations that want direct operational control can investigate Mastodon’s business-hosting offering. The official site lists hosting support for organizations, but it does not establish a referral program, commission or particular availability.

Bluesky: public conversation, not friends-only sharing

Visibility rules

Bluesky’s support documentation, dated March 27, 2024, states that posts, likes and blocks are public and that private profiles are currently unavailable. That is decisive for the question “where can I share only with friends?” Bluesky should not be presented as a friends-only replacement.

The same help page says a deleted post disappears from the user-facing app immediately, while text may take longer to be fully removed from storage. Deletion therefore changes what ordinary visitors see first; it is not a promise that every underlying copy vanishes at once.

Data and business-model trade-offs

Bluesky’s privacy policy, last updated August 14, 2025, says the company does not sell personal data and does not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. The policy also describes processing account and device data, uploaded content and other information. Where legally required, third-party services may perform age or identity checks. “No sale” is therefore not equivalent to “no data processing.”

How large is it?

In a January 29, 2026 transparency report covering 2025, Bluesky reported 1.41 billion posts created during 2025 and a user range of 25.94 million to 41.41 million during that year. These are company-reported figures, not independent estimates, so treat them as an indication of activity rather than an audited market-size measurement.

Bluesky can be useful when your priority is an open, public conversation network. Choose another service when your requirement is a private profile or a post visible only to approved friends.

Signal: private conversations instead of a public timeline

Where Signal fits

Signal is best understood as a private communication and group-chat tool, not as a replacement for a public timeline, open-ended community discovery or a news feed. It is a strong candidate for family conversations, one-to-one messages and invitation-based groups where the participants already know one another.

The identifier you must accept

Signal’s terms state: “To create an account you must register for our Services using your phone number.” A phone number is therefore part of the account decision even when the desired conversations are private. Consider whether the people you plan to contact already have that number and whether exposing it to the service is acceptable for your threat model.

Encryption is not the whole privacy story

Signal’s terms also state that encrypted information and metadata may be transferred to countries where Signal or its providers operate. Encryption protects message content in transit and storage according to the service’s design, but it does not eliminate account, operational or jurisdictional considerations. Read the current terms and set expectations with group members before treating Signal as a universal Facebook replacement.

Reddit: pseudonymous, interest-based communities

What Reddit replaces

Reddit is closer to Facebook Groups than to a friends-and-family timeline. Communities are organized around subjects, and users can participate under a chosen name. It can work well when your goal is to ask questions, exchange advice or follow a hobby without presenting a real-world identity to every participant.

Identity and browsing claims

Reddit’s privacy page says, “We don’t require your real name or photo to create an account.” It also says shared image and video location and personal metadata are stripped, and that Anonymous Browsing does not associate browsing and searches with an account. These are the company’s stated practices, not an independent audit or a blanket guarantee of anonymity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A pseudonym can still become identifiable through writing style, repeated details, linked accounts, photographs or participation in a small local community. Avoid posting addresses, schedules, workplace details and other combinations that make re-identification easy.

Choose communities carefully

  • Read each community’s rules and moderation history before posting sensitive questions.
  • Assume public comments can be copied or quoted outside Reddit.
  • Separate accounts when mixing professional, local and highly personal interests if that separation matters to you.
  • Use the platform’s privacy controls as described in its current policy, and revisit them after major product changes.

Discord: organized group spaces with platform processing

When it is a practical fit

Discord suits organized groups: clubs, classes, gaming communities, volunteer teams and projects that need channels, roles and ongoing discussion. It can replace the coordination part of a Facebook Group more naturally than a public microblogging network can.

Private spaces are not all the same

A small invitation-only server has a different exposure profile from a discoverable or very large server. Review who can join, who can read historical messages, which bots have access and what moderators can do. “Private” should describe the actual membership and permissions, not merely the fact that a server has a name or an invite link.

Data-use disclosure

Discord says it does not sell personal information and describes subscriptions, paid products and sponsored content as revenue sources. Its privacy policy, effective September 29, 2025, says content shared in larger spaces may be used to develop and improve services, including safety and catch-up features. If you are discussing sensitive material, prefer a space whose membership and access controls match the sensitivity, and read the current policy for the server type you intend to use.

Side-by-side privacy and fit comparison

Service Primary audience Operator structure Account identifier or identity note Visibility and processing caveat
Mastodon Public social posting and following Independent server operators connected by federation Choose a server; requirements vary by server Server policies, moderation and retention are instance-specific; public posts remain broadly shareable
Bluesky Public conversation and discovery Central service with a public network Private profiles are unavailable on the cited help documentation Posts, likes and blocks are public; account, device and content data are processed
Signal Private one-to-one and group messaging Single service operator Phone number required to register Terms address encrypted information and metadata transfers across operating countries
Reddit Pseudonymous, interest-based communities Single service operator with community moderators Real name or photo not required Company describes metadata stripping and anonymous browsing; neither establishes guaranteed anonymity
Discord Organized group spaces and coordination Single service operator with server administrators and moderators Account and device information are processed under the privacy policy Content in larger spaces may be used to improve services; discoverable servers broaden exposure

A practical migration plan from Facebook

1. Inventory the conversations you cannot lose

Write down the people, groups and recurring activities you currently handle on Facebook. Mark each as public publishing, interest discussion, group coordination or private messaging. This prevents you from choosing a public network for a private family chat simply because it looks familiar.

2. Pick the smallest set of services that covers those needs

Many people need a combination rather than a single replacement. For example, use Mastodon for public announcements, Reddit for topic communities and Signal for close contacts. Adding a service only when a use case requires it reduces the number of accounts and policies you must monitor.

3. Read the current policy and visibility controls

Check the exact service and server policy before uploading old photos, contact lists or sensitive messages. Confirm who can see new content, whether search or discovery exposes it, how deletion works and what identifiers are mandatory. Policies and controls change: the dates above identify the versions summarized here, not a permanent guarantee.

4. Set up identity separation deliberately

Decide whether your public name, pseudonym, phone number and profile photograph should be connected. Avoid reusing a distinctive username everywhere if you want meaningful separation. Remember that contacts can connect accounts through shared links, writing patterns or profile details even when the services themselves do not merge databases.

5. Move people before moving archives

Tell friends and group members where you will be reachable, and give them a specific reason to join the new space. Start with a small active group, verify that notifications and moderation work, then migrate additional conversations. A social graph moves through coordination; a service cannot automatically recreate every relationship or group norm.

6. Remove or reduce the old exposure

After the new channels work, review old Facebook posts, group memberships, profile fields and connected applications. Delete material you no longer want public, but do not assume deletion erases copies that others downloaded or reshared. Keep only the account information needed for any remaining purpose.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling a public service private: Bluesky’s cited documentation explicitly says profiles are not private. Do not use it for friends-only updates.
  • Equating federation with identical privacy: Mastodon servers interoperate, but their operators and rules differ. Evaluate the specific instance.
  • Assuming encryption removes metadata: Signal still requires a phone number, and its terms discuss encrypted information and metadata transfers.
  • Treating pseudonyms as anonymity: Reddit does not require a real name or photo, but your posts can still reveal who you are.
  • Ignoring server scale: Discord’s data-use disclosure distinguishes larger spaces. Check discoverability, membership and bot permissions.
  • Moving every feature at once: Replace the highest-risk or most important use case first, then expand after people have adopted the new channel.
  • Relying on an old policy screenshot: Product controls and policies change. Recheck the current page before making a high-stakes decision.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The cited official pages provide service-specific descriptions, not an independent privacy ranking across all alternatives. No single audit here proves that one platform is safest for every person or threat model. Mastodon’s instance details can change, Bluesky’s public-visibility documentation is dated March 27, 2024, its privacy policy was last updated August 14, 2025, and Discord’s linked policy is effective September 29, 2025. Revisit those documents when your decision involves sensitive information, regulated work or a long-term community.

The most defensible conclusion is functional: choose Mastodon when decentralized public posting matters, Reddit when pseudonymous topic discussion matters, Discord when structured group coordination matters, Signal when private messaging matters, and Bluesky only when public visibility is acceptable. Use the service whose audience and data practices match the conversation you are actually trying to have.
