Most F-Zero GX unlockables come from three systems: Grand Prix cup victories, Story Mode clears, and purchases in the F-Zero Shop. Win Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire on Standard or Expert to open Diamond; win those three on Expert to open Master Class; then clear all four cups on Master for the AX courses. Story Mode supplies Dark Schneider, Spade, AX pilots and AX custom parts, while Time Attack Staff Ghosts and several small quality-of-life secrets reward specific performance milestones.
This guide separates rewards by mode, explains when an item is merely unlocked versus actually purchased, and documents the original-console AX transfer route. A final section covers button codes reported on October 10, 2026, with the appropriate caveats for that recent, secondary report.
How GX progression is divided
F-Zero GX does not use one universal unlock meter. A cup victory, a Story chapter clear and a fast Time Attack run advance different reward tracks. The practical rule is to check the F-Zero Shop after every major milestone: many conditions make an item available, but the game still expects you to spend tickets before you can use it.

No dependable published total for the number of GX unlockables has been established. The named checklists below are more useful than an invented total.

Grand Prix unlock checklist
Use the following order if your priority is opening every cup and course available entirely on GameCube hardware.

Diamond Cup
Win Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire on either Standard or Expert. The victories must be first-place finishes; simply completing a cup does not satisfy the condition. Once the three results are recorded, select Diamond from Grand Prix.
Master Class
Master is tied to Expert performance in the first three cups. Place first in Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire on Expert. The game’s four-cup Master progression then requires the Diamond Cup as part of the route toward the AX-course unlock, so plan to win all four cups on Master rather than stopping after the first three.

There are two ways to obtain AX courses:
- Console-only route: win Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Diamond on Master.
- Arcade route: use a GameCube memory card containing GX save data in an F-Zero AX arcade machine, then place first in an AX course. The transferred course is made available in GX and must be bought in the Shop.
After every AX course is unlocked, the AX Cup appears. Winning that cup on Novice, Standard, Expert or Master is sufficient to open Mute City: Sonic Oval. Sonic Oval can then be selected in versus and other modes, but not in Grand Prix.
Story Mode: chapters, pilots and parts
Story Mode has a predictable difficulty ladder: clearing a chapter opens that chapter’s Hard setting, and clearing Hard opens Very Hard. The chapter-by-chapter rewards are separate from the cup rewards.

“Finish all nine” means all nine numbered chapters, not merely the opening sequence. If a character or part does not appear immediately after a clear, visit the Shop: the condition commonly changes availability rather than depositing a free item in your garage.
Very Hard mission rewards
The documented mission table pairs each Very Hard chapter with an AX racer and that racer’s machine. Complete the corresponding mission, then check the Shop for the newly available entry.

Unlocking all custom parts
Hard clears are the central Story requirement for AX custom parts. The guide tables also record additional part sets attached to Novice and Standard cup-count rewards and to Expert Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald results. Those entries are availability milestones, not automatic free grants: after meeting a milestone, open the F-Zero Shop and spend the required tickets.

Because the reward tables are organized by chapter and cup milestones, the safest completion routine is:
- Clear every Story chapter on Normal, then replay each on Hard.
- After each Hard clear, check the Shop for newly listed AX parts and buy the sets you want.
- Finish the nine Very Hard chapters to expose the AX pilot and machine entries.
- Recheck the Shop after the Novice, Standard and Expert cup milestones; some part sets are attached to those cup counts rather than to a single Story mission.
F-Zero Shop and ticket rules
GX uses a two-step reward model. A race, chapter or code can unlock an item for purchase without paying for it automatically. Tickets remain necessary for many machines, parts, courses and music entries.
- When a guide says an item is “unlocked,” read that as available in the Shop unless it explicitly says the item is granted immediately.
- If a newly earned machine is missing from the garage, visit the Shop before repeating the mission.
- Transferred AX courses follow the same rule: the memory-card event makes them purchasable, and tickets complete the process.
- The October 10, 2026 button-code report also says tickets are still required for the content its codes expose.
How to verify a milestone
Save after a qualifying cup, chapter or arcade race, return to the main menu and open the Shop. Check both the machine list and the custom-part pages; a pilot, machine and part set can be separate entries even when one event exposed all three. If a ticket balance is too low, the unlock remains pending rather than being lost, so earn tickets and return later.
Difficulty is also tracked separately. A Standard win can satisfy Diamond, but it cannot substitute for the Expert wins needed for Master Class. Likewise, clearing a chapter on Normal opens Hard for that chapter only; it does not make every chapter Hard automatically. Treat each cup and each numbered chapter as its own checkbox.
Staff Ghosts in Time Attack
To earn a Staff Ghost, finish a Time Attack course no more than 10 seconds slower than the displayed Staff Ghost time. The game records the ghost after the qualifying run; it is not necessary to beat the staff time.
- Choose Time Attack and select the course.
- Run within the 10-second window of the Staff Ghost’s time.
- Return to the Course Select screen.
- Load the Staff Ghost from the course’s ghost-selection option.
The threshold is relative to the listed ghost time, so a run 10.00 seconds behind may depend on how the game rounds the displayed result; aim comfortably inside the window rather than targeting the boundary. A qualifying lap and an ordinary fast lap are not interchangeable: use the Course Select screen to confirm that the Staff Ghost is available.
Original-hardware AX transfer route
The F-Zero AX manual describes the capability directly: “If you play with a Memory Card inserted and satisfy certain conditions, you can download special F-ZERO AX data to your Memory Card. You can then use the downloaded data in F-ZERO GX.” The manual is published by Sega and Amusement Vision.
What you need
- An original GameCube setup and a compatible memory card.
- GX save data on that card.
- Access to an F-Zero AX arcade cabinet.
- Enough GX tickets to buy the content after it transfers.
Practical arcade procedure
- Insert the memory card containing GX data into the AX cabinet.
- Play an AX course and place first, or finish an AX race while using the chosen AX machine, depending on the content you are targeting.
- Save when the cabinet prompts you. The downloaded data is written to the memory card.
- Move the card back to the GameCube and start GX.
- Open the F-Zero Shop and purchase the transferred course, machine or related entry with tickets.
Community guide documentation records the exact arcade conditions, while the manual establishes that the memory-card download function exists. Arcade availability, cabinet configuration and regional service can vary, so the all-four-cups-on-Master route remains the dependable console-only alternative.

Small secrets and quality-of-life unlocks
Replay music selection
During a replay, press L or R to cycle through unlocked character theme songs. This changes the replay soundtrack without altering the race recording.
Story subtitles
Press Z during a Story cutscene to turn subtitles on. Press it again to change the setting as offered by the scene.
Extra life from retirements
Retire at least five opponents in one race attempt to gain an extra life once during that attempt. The bonus is especially useful in Master Class, where a single mistake can otherwise end a run.

Remixed music
“Sounds of Big Blue” and “Sounds of Mute City” are Shop unlocks with documented button-input methods. The Mute City remix is also listed as a Diamond Cup Master reward. If the track is not selectable after the relevant cup result, check the Shop and confirm that the purchase has been completed.
Reported button codes dated October 10, 2026
Nintendo Everything reported on October 10, 2026, that newly documented button codes can unlock all AX machines, all AX courses, Dark Schneider and five Gold-Part sets. The report also says that tickets are still needed to purchase unlocked content and that several Gold-Part codes require four controllers connected simultaneously.
These are reported codes, not a Nintendo release-note announcement. Treat them as a recent secondary-source discovery: use the exact button sequences published with that report, keep the four-controller requirement in mind for the affected Gold-Part entries, and verify the resulting Shop availability before assuming an item has been granted for free. The traditional Grand Prix, Story and AX-transfer routes remain valid if you are playing without the codes.
What the reported codes change
The codes are shortcuts to availability, not replacements for the Shop economy. They can expose AX machines, AX courses, Dark Schneider and five Gold-Part sets, but the reported procedure still requires tickets. They also do not change the Staff Ghost rule, the AX Cup requirement for Sonic Oval, or the chapter-by-chapter difficulty ladder. Keep a normal save backup before experimenting with any multi-controller input, and verify each exposed item in the Shop afterward.

- If an AX cabinet is accessible, use a GX memory card to transfer courses or machines; otherwise rely on the Master Grand Prix and Story routes.
Troubleshooting common unlock problems
Diamond is still locked
Check that you placed first in all three prerequisite cups. A partial clear, a lower finishing position or a result recorded on the wrong difficulty does not satisfy the requirement.

Master Class is unavailable
The three prerequisite victories must be on Expert. Standard wins are enough for Diamond but do not open Master.
An AX course or machine is listed but unusable
Open the F-Zero Shop and look for a ticket price. Availability and ownership are separate steps.
The AX transfer did not appear
Confirm that the memory card contained GX save data before the AX race, that the cabinet saved after the qualifying result, and that the card was returned to the same GX system. Then check the Shop rather than only the machine-select screen.
A Staff Ghost will not load
Recheck the time difference and load it from Course Select. A fast lap by itself does not automatically place the ghost in the active replay list until the qualifying condition is met.

How do I get Dark Schneider and Spade?
Finish all nine Story chapters for Dark Schneider. Finish every chapter on Hard for Spade; Hard clears also expose Magic Seagull and AX custom parts.
Are unlocked items free?
Usually not. A condition generally makes a machine, course, part or music entry available in the F-Zero Shop, where tickets are still required.
Can I transfer F-Zero AX content to GX?
On original hardware, insert a memory card containing GX data into an AX cabinet, satisfy the relevant race condition, save, then return the card to GX and purchase the transferred entry in the Shop.
