EZ Baccarat is baccarat with the usual commission on winning Banker bets removed. The trade-off is a special exception: when the Banker wins with a three-card total of 7, the Banker wager pushes instead of winning. An optional Dragon 7 bet is designed for that result, while Panda 8 covers a three-card winning Player total of 8.
Cards are dealt automatically under fixed rules. You do not choose whether either hand draws. Your practical job is to understand the point-value calculation, identify the final Player and Banker totals, and check the posted paytable before placing any optional wager. EZ Baccarat remains a game of chance; no betting pattern can guarantee a profit or make a particular card appear.
What EZ Baccarat is
EZ Baccarat uses the same basic objective as other baccarat variants: the Player hand and Banker hand each receive two or three cards, and the hand closest to 9 wins. The California Bureau of Gambling Control describes the object as assembling two hands with a point value “as close to nine (9) as possible.”

In EZ Baccarat, the commission is removed, but a Banker hand that wins with exactly three cards totaling 7 is not paid as a Banker win. The Banker wager pushes, while Player and Tie wagers lose on that result under the cited California rules. A Dragon 7 side bet can pay when that outcome occurs.

Other details, including side-bet availability, progressive eligibility, minimums, maximums and exact paytables, are set by the casino and jurisdiction. Treat the California rules and the Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati rules below as documented examples, not as a universal table specification.
How baccarat points are calculated
Baccarat uses only the units digit of a hand total. Add the card values, then discard any tens digit.

When the sum reaches 10 or more, keep only the last digit:
- 7 + 8 = 15, so the hand total is 5.
- 9 + 6 = 15, so the hand total is 5.
- 8 + 8 = 16, so the hand total is 6.
- 10 + Queen = 0.
- Ace + 9 = 10, so the hand total is 0.
A two-card total of 8 or 9 is called a natural. A natural stops further drawing for that hand, so no third card is dealt to it.
How an EZ Baccarat hand is dealt
- Place the wager. Choose a base Player, Banker or Tie bet if offered by the table. Optional Dragon 7, Panda 8 or progressive bets are separate wagers and may have their own eligibility rules.
- Deal two cards to each hand. The dealer deals according to the fixed baccarat sequence; players do not select cards or actions.
- Check for naturals. If either hand has a two-card 8 or 9, the drawing procedure stops and the final totals are compared.
- Apply the Player rule. A Player total of 0 through 5 draws one card. A Player total of 6 or 7 stands. A natural 8 or 9 has already stopped the hand.
- Apply the Banker rule. The Banker decision is automatic. It depends on the Banker’s two-card total and, for certain totals, the value of the Player’s third card. The dealer follows the table’s posted Banker chart rather than making a discretionary choice.
- Compare final totals. The higher total wins. A matching total is a tie. The special three-card Banker 7 rule is applied when the Banker would otherwise win.
- Settle every wager separately. Base bets, Tie, Dragon 7, Panda 8 and any progressive bet can have different outcomes on the same hand.
The conventional Banker drawing chart
Many EZ Baccarat tables use the conventional baccarat Banker chart shown below. Because a casino can publish a jurisdiction-specific rule set, compare this summary with the printed or electronic rules at your table.

If the Player stands, there is no Player third-card value to consult, so the Banker follows the stand/draw portion of the posted chart. The dealer, not the bettor, resolves every branch.

The EZ Baccarat Banker 7 exception
The exception applies only when all of these conditions are met:

- The Banker’s final point total is 7.
- The Banker total beats the Player total.
On that result, the Banker wager pushes rather than paying. A push returns the original Banker stake without a profit. Under the cited California rules, the Player wager and Tie wager lose, and the optional Dragon 7 wager wins. A three-card Banker 7 that ties the Player is not a “winning Banker 7,” so use the table’s posted wording for the exact settlement.
Worked Dragon 7 example
Suppose the Banker’s first two cards total 5, the Banker draws a card worth 2, and the final Banker total is 7. If the Player finishes on 6, the Banker has won with three cards. The base Banker bet pushes under the EZ rule; the Player and Tie bets lose; and a correctly placed Dragon 7 side bet is paid according to the table’s paytable.
Dragon 7 and Panda 8 side bets
These are optional wagers, not alternate ways to calculate the base game.
Dragon 7
Dragon 7 targets a Banker win with a three-card total of 7. The California Bureau of Gambling Control rules cite a 40-to-1 payout for Dragon 7. That figure is a paytable example, not the probability of the event or a guaranteed return. The side bet is generally settled independently of the pushed Banker wager, but confirm the exact conditions at the table.

Panda 8
Panda 8 targets a Player hand that wins with three cards and finishes on 8. Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati’s 2021 posted rules cite a 25-to-1 Panda 8 payout. A two-card natural 8 is not a three-card Panda 8; the hand must meet the side bet’s definition of a winning three-card Player 8.

Progressive versions
Nevada’s EZ Baccarat Progressive rules describe an optional progressive wager based on Panda 8 and Dragon 7 and include a sample paytable. Those rules also state that a casino may decide whether players can place the progressive wager without making a base baccarat wager. Therefore, do not assume that every EZ Baccarat table offers the progressive, uses the same amounts, or permits it as a stand-alone bet.

The cited 40-to-1, 25-to-1 and 8-to-1 numbers are payout ratios in named rule documents. They are not occurrence rates, house-edge figures or expected returns. A payout of 40 to 1 means a winning side bet returns the stated profit multiple plus the original stake according to the table’s convention; verify whether the display describes “to 1” profit or total return.
EZ Baccarat versus commission baccarat
The versions look similar because both use the same target total and automatic dealing. The settlement rules are where the practical differences appear.

The removal of commission does not by itself establish that one version is more profitable for a particular bettor. The special Banker 7 push, side-bet prices and local rules all affect the mathematics. The available documents do not support a universal house-edge ranking or a winning strategy, so avoid claims that EZ Baccarat guarantees a better result.
How to read a table before betting
- Identify the jurisdiction and game name. Confirm that the layout says EZ Baccarat and note whether it is a progressive or non-progressive table.
- Read the Banker 7 wording. Look specifically for the three-card total of 7 and whether the Banker wager pushes.
- Check every paytable line. Confirm the Tie, Dragon 7, Panda 8 and progressive payouts. A nearby table can use different amounts.
- Check side-bet eligibility. Nevada’s progressive rules show that some casinos may require a base wager while others may not.
- Check limits and currency. Minimums, maximums and chip denominations are local table conditions, not universal EZ Baccarat specifications.
- Confirm age and responsible-gambling information. Hard Rock Cincinnati’s posted rules, for example, state that players must be 21 or older and display the notice “GAMBLING PROBLEM? CALL 1-800-589-9966.” Age limits and support contacts depend on location.
Practice scoring with playing cards
A standard 52-card deck is useful for rehearsing point values and totals. The California rules specify a standard 52-card deck for the game, while casino dealing uses multiple decks. A home deck can teach arithmetic and the fixed draw sequence, but it cannot reproduce casino shuffling, shoe procedures or outcome frequencies and cannot predict the next result.
Five-minute practice drill
- Shuffle a standard deck and deal two cards to a mock Player hand and two to a mock Banker hand.
- Convert every card to its baccarat value, treating tens and face cards as zero.
- Reduce each sum to its units digit.
- Stop immediately if either hand has a natural 8 or 9.
- Otherwise apply the Player 0–5 draw and 6–7 stand rule.
- Use the posted Banker chart for the Banker decision, then compare final totals.
- Mark whether the result qualifies as a three-card Player 8 or a winning three-card Banker 7.
Practice examples
- Natural: Player 7 plus Ace equals 8. The Player has a natural and does not draw.
- Zero total: Banker 10 plus Queen equals 0. A zero is the lowest baccarat total, so the Banker follows the draw rule for 0.
- Reduced total: Player 8 plus 8 equals 16, which is 6, not 16.
- Panda candidate: Player starts on 5, draws a 3 and finishes on 8. It qualifies as Panda 8 only if the Player beats the Banker and the table defines the side bet that way.
- Dragon candidate: Banker starts on 5, draws a 2 and finishes on 7. It qualifies as Dragon 7 only if the Banker beats the Player and the posted side-bet conditions are met.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Counting face cards as ten
In baccarat, a Jack, Queen, King and 10 are all zero. Counting them as ten can change a total from a draw to a stand or make a false natural.

Adding the tens digit
A hand totaling 15 is worth 5, not 15. Always keep only the units digit.
Choosing to hit or stand
EZ Baccarat is not blackjack. The player does not decide whether to draw, and the dealer cannot accept a request to change the fixed procedure.
Confusing any Banker 7 with Dragon 7
Dragon 7 concerns a three-card Banker total of 7 that wins the hand. A two-card Banker 7 and a three-card Banker 7 that does not beat the Player are different outcomes.
Assuming a natural 8 is Panda 8
Panda 8 requires a winning three-card Player 8. A two-card natural 8 stops the hand but does not satisfy that three-card condition.
Treating a posted payout as an odds statement
“25 to 1” and “40 to 1” describe payout ratios, not how often the event occurs. They also do not account for losing side bets or other table conditions.
Can any strategy make you win more?
No documented rule in the cited materials turns EZ Baccarat into a beatable system. You can improve accuracy by learning the scoring and avoiding wagers whose conditions you do not understand, but correct arithmetic does not control which cards are dealt. Betting progressions, chasing Dragon 7 or Panda 8 results, and increasing stakes after losses do not change the fixed dealing rules.
If you choose to play, decide a spending limit before the session, keep side bets within that limit, and stop when the limit is reached. Do not borrow money or treat gambling as income. Use the current regulator or casino guidance for local age requirements and support services.
A complete hand-resolution checklist
- Is the table actually EZ Baccarat?
- What are the point values of all cards?
- Have totals been reduced to the last digit?
- Does either hand have a natural 8 or 9?
- If not, did the Player draw on 0–5 and stand on 6–7?
- Did the dealer apply the posted Banker chart using the Player’s third card where required?
- Which final total is higher, or is the result a tie?
- If the Banker won with three cards totaling 7, was the Banker wager pushed?
- Did the hand meet the exact Dragon 7 or Panda 8 definition?
- Were all optional wagers settled using the current paytable?
Once those checks are complete, the result is determined. The main skill EZ Baccarat allows is recognizing the rules and reading the settlement correctly, not selecting cards or guaranteeing a winning outcome.
