Eye mapping can help tailor a laser vision correction plan, but “personalized” does not mean that every eye is suitable or that a custom plan guarantees better vision. Topography-guided LASIK uses measurements of the cornea’s surface; wavefront-guided treatment measures optical aberrations across the eye. The right approach depends on what an examination finds, and candidacy and surgeon experience remain central.
What does eye mapping measure?
“Eye mapping” is an umbrella term, not one test. Different methods measure different features and can guide different treatment plans. In topography-guided LASIK, a map of the cornea’s surface helps plan where treatment is applied. In the specific system described in the FDA’s 2021 patient booklet, an ALLEGRO Topolyzer measures the cornea and sends information to an ALLEGRETTO WAVE EYE-Q excimer laser, which removes small amounts of corneal tissue. That documented workflow is not a universal description of every laser platform. FDA patient booklet
Wavefront-guided ablation uses aberrometry to measure optical imperfections across the eye, including higher-order aberrations that ordinary sphere and cylinder prescriptions do not capture. Wavefront-optimized treatment is different: it adds peripheral laser pulses to address spherical aberration, but does not measure each eye’s higher-order aberrations. These labels describe distinct approaches, not interchangeable versions of the same map. FDA LASIK FAQ AAO EyeWiki preoperative evaluation

A map is useful only insofar as it helps address the source and pattern of an eye’s optical irregularity. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeWiki guidance says topography-guided treatment is preferred when the aberration source is clearly corneal and irregular. Wavefront-guided treatment may be appropriate when aberrations are internal or associated with a prior irregular or decentered ablation. If baseline aberrometry is unremarkable, wavefront-guided LASIK has not been shown to outperform conventional or wavefront-optimized LASIK. AAO EyeWiki preoperative evaluation

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In other words, more data does not automatically make a treatment better. The clinician must interpret measurements alongside the rest of the examination and decide whether the identified irregularity is relevant to the plan.
What do reported vision outcomes show?
Published percentages describe particular studies, devices, patients, and follow-up times. They are not an individual forecast, and results from different studies should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison.

The figures above come from different reports and follow-up periods; they do not establish that one mapping approach is superior to another. The FDA also notes that average higher-order aberrations still increased after wavefront-guided treatment in clinical studies, although less than after conventional LASIK. FDA LASIK FAQ
Does a detailed map mean LASIK is suitable?
No. Topography and tomography are used in screening as well as planning. AAO EyeWiki identifies abnormal topography or tomography indicating keratoconus or another ectatic disease as an absolute contraindication to LASIK. A detailed map cannot make an unsafe cornea suitable or replace an ophthalmologist’s examination. AAO EyeWiki preoperative evaluation

The FDA puts the decision in perspective: “Patient selection (‘When is LASIK not for me?’) and the experience and competence of the surgeon are still the most important considerations.” FDA LASIK FAQ Stable refraction, eye health, clinical measurements, and professional judgment all matter; a technology label alone cannot determine candidacy.

LASIK permanently removes corneal tissue. It does not prevent age-related changes in focusing, such as presbyopia, so a person may still need reading glasses later. FDA patient booklet

What to ask at a consultation
- Which measurements are being used: corneal topography or tomography, whole-eye wavefront aberrometry, or another method?
- What finding in my examination makes that approach relevant to my eyes?
- Are there signs of corneal disease or other factors that make LASIK unsuitable?
- What outcomes and risks apply to the specific device and patient group being discussed, and over what follow-up period?
- How could I still need glasses, or experience dry eye or visual symptoms, after surgery?
