Cheating can feel especially damaging in extraction shooters because one encounter may put a whole run, valuable loot, and persistent progress at risk. That helps explain the genre’s reputation as a haven for cheaters—but the available evidence does not show that extraction shooters have a higher cheating rate than other multiplayer genres.
Why cheating feels worse in extraction games
In a conventional match, a cheater can ruin a fight or a round. In an extraction game, the consequences may follow a player out of the match: a lost run can also mean losing gear or loot accumulated over time. Bungie says Marathon is designed to give players a fair chance to exfiltrate with loot and treats acquired gear as an investment worth protecting. That is a concrete example of why cheating can carry unusually high stakes, not evidence that cheaters are more prevalent across the genre.
The damage can also be informational. Wall hacks, ESP, or loot revealers can expose where players or valuable items are, undermining the uncertainty that makes a run fair. Bungie says Marathon uses server-side Fog of War to limit what a client knows about player positions, map regions, and loot.
These concerns vary by game. Hunt: Showdown and Marathon illustrate persistent stakes and developer countermeasures, but they do not establish one universal extraction-shooter ruleset.

Why a single anti-cheat measure is not enough
Developers describe layered defenses because cheats can target different parts of a game: client software, combat and movement, information available to players, or the in-game economy.
Hunt: Showdown’s detection and review layers
Crytek said an upgrade to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) with Hunt: Showdown Update 2.0 led to more than 2,300 bans after the system caught cheaters who had previously gone undetected. Crytek also said it was developing game-specific behavioral analysis to catch suspicious patterns that EAC might miss, while keeping detection details confidential.

In a separate update, Crytek described working with EAC’s automated detection, reviewing player reports through its support team, and using Anybrain input analysis as an additional tool. The studio said it was working on detecting mouse-and-keyboard use in controller environments, while refining a PC rollout to reduce false positives. Crytek also described a formal ban-appeal route. These are the developer’s stated measures; the descriptions do not establish how effective they are relative to other games.
Marathon’s server and information controls
Bungie’s February 23, 2026 security post says Marathon’s dedicated servers are authoritative over movement, shooting, actions, and inventory. It also describes Fog of War to limit information exposed to clients, telemetry analysis for anomalies, and protections against item duplication and other economic cheats. Bungie says players found cheating will be permanently banned and that an appeal system will be provided. These are stated design and policy commitments, not independently verified performance results.

- Ergonomic Comfort & Endurance: Sweat-resistant silicone grip for marathon sessions. 1000mAh rechargeable battery for extended play. Upgraded 8-way D-pad with dome switches delivers precise diagonal control for fighting and retro games
The approach addresses more than whether a cheat program is detected: server authority is intended to prevent invalid combat or inventory actions, while limiting information can reduce the value of location and loot reveals. Bungie acknowledges that no network or security model can guarantee perfection.
Why bans do not tell you how common cheating is
Ban totals are enforcement counts, not estimates of the percentage of players who cheat. They depend on the period counted, detection capabilities, the kinds of behavior being targeted, and the categories used. A new detection method can raise bans without showing that cheating itself has increased.

| Hunt: Showdown report | Reported count | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Update 2.0 anti-cheat post | More than 2,300 bans | Crytek said the upgraded EAC system had generated a surge of automated bans since Update 2.0’s release; this is not a player-prevalence rate. |
| May 2, 2025 Fair Play Task Force update | 4,929 cheater bans | Crytek reported this total since January. It is a Hunt enforcement count for that stated period, not the share of players cheating. |
| Fair Play Task Force roadmap update | 3,515 cheating bans; 428 mouse-and-keyboard-on-console bans; 269 in-game-reason bans | Crytek reported these counts since its preceding update. The opened page did not display a publication year. The categories and interval should not be added to or directly compared with the other figures as rates. |
Crytek has also described a detection-timing problem specific to Hunt: obvious “rage cheaters” may be caught quickly, while selective “togglers” who cheat only at key moments can require more data to confirm. A player who appears legitimate much of the time may be harder to distinguish from a non-cheater based on a short record.

In its roadmap update, Crytek cautioned that more bans do not automatically mean the situation is worse or better. A high total may reflect a widespread, identifiable pattern being detected; a lower one may reflect active exploits being addressed. Without matched periods, categories, and player-population data, the totals cannot show a genre-wide rate.

The evidence supports a clear explanation for the perception: extraction games can make cheating feel especially consequential because loot, gear, information, and progress are bound up in a run, and developers build specific protections around those stakes. It does not establish that extraction shooters have more cheaters than other competitive multiplayer genres. The cited official statements describe individual games’ defenses and enforcement, not a controlled comparison of cheating prevalence across genres.
When judging a game’s response, useful questions include whether servers control combat and inventory, how much player and loot information reaches clients, what safeguards address duplication and economic exploits, how reports are reviewed, and whether ban counts specify their period and categories. These criteria help clarify the stated scope of a developer’s approach; the available descriptions do not support ranking the games’ anti-cheat effectiveness.
