You can extract audio from an iPhone video in three useful ways, but they do not all produce the same result. A Shortcuts workflow can save a separate audio file, while iMovie’s Audio Only and Detach options put audio into a movie project for editing. If you need a file to share or use elsewhere, start with Shortcuts and check the saved result in Files.
Choose the method that matches what you need

Apple’s iMovie instructions document project editing, not saving a standalone audio file to Files. The separate-file workflow below is described by a third-party tutorial, so its labels and results may vary by iOS version.
Method 1: Save a separate audio file with Shortcuts
A tutorial published by Minivid on October 1, 2026 describes a Shortcut that uses Encode Media with Audio Only, followed by Save File. It can be invoked from a video’s share sheet. This is the option to try when you want an audio output separate from an iMovie project. Minivid’s tutorial provides its walkthrough.

- Open or create the Shortcut described in the tutorial, using Encode Media configured for Audio Only, then Save File.
- Run the workflow for the video, such as by choosing it from the share sheet if that option is available.
- When the save step appears, choose a destination and complete the save.
- Open Files and confirm that the output is present and plays as expected before deleting or changing the source video.
The cited workflow is third-party guidance, not an Apple-documented guarantee. Do not assume a particular file format, audio quality, or identical action labels across iOS versions; check the actual saved file on your device.

Method 2: Add only a video’s audio to an iMovie project
Use this when you are making or editing a movie and want audio from a video clip in the project. Apple documents adding the audio to the timeline; this action is not described as exporting a separate audio file. See Apple’s iMovie instructions for adding audio from a video clip.
- Open your movie project in iMovie and move the playhead to where the audio should begin.
- Tap Add Media, then Video, and browse to the source clip.
- Select the clip. To use only part of it, drag the yellow trim handles to select the desired segment.
- Tap More, then Audio Only. iMovie adds the selected audio to the project timeline.
If the clip is in iCloud Photos and is not stored on the iPhone, iMovie may show a Download button. Download the clip before using it.

Method 3: Detach audio for editing in iMovie
Choose Detach when a video is already in your iMovie timeline and you want to work on its audio separately inside that project. Apple says the detached audio appears as a blue clip below the video and can be moved, deleted, or edited independently. Detaching does not, by itself, create a standalone file in Files. - Open the movie project and tap the video clip in the timeline.
- Tap Actions, then Detach.
- Work with the blue audio clip beneath the video: move, edit, or delete it as needed.
Which result should you expect?
- Need an audio file outside iMovie? Try the Shortcuts workflow, then verify the saved file in Files.
- Need audio placed into a movie you are making? Use iMovie’s Audio Only option.
- Need to change a clip’s audio separately in an existing project? Use iMovie’s Detach action.
